New machine + transfer account

Hello
i just bought the new g5 tower, middle size one.
i read apples info on transferring my account from my old machine to my new one, seems simple enough, but....
a fellow subscriber said i should do the following before i migrate the account to the new machine from the old one.
Make sure G4 has 10.4.3 on it and clone drive to the new PM G5 using Carbon Copy Cloner via Firewire Target Disk mode. The Migration Assistant may not copy all files -- like important invisible ones -- in some instances.
I have other questions:
my question is will this apple automated set of migration tasks also automatically deauthorize my purchased i-tunes account on old machine and reauthorize new machine?
we have 2 external hard drives. ive read tons on people losing data or not being able to connect to their drives after migration or upgrade. Should I just unplug them during transfer from old machine or leave them plugged in? or does it not mtter?
the old machine is a powermac g4 mdd.
im scared.
when i read the lower level (more in depth) details on migration it strated talking on a level that intimidated me. things like firmware & firewire upgrades, how do i know if im supposed to upgrade firmware or not and on which machine?
basically, i am in an overall quandry. maybe i should stop worrying about all the in depth stuff and just do it and save myself anightmare.
thanks
wayne

Well, there is no evidence at all that there are specific installs. In fact, in conversations with many developers, they have told me there is no such thing. If there are problems from clones, then the original was bad. It is not about risk, at all. This forum is replete with problems from Tiger installs. Is that evidence that Tiger is bad? Of course not. I have done at least 100 clones for clients, in this fashion, and have not seen one instance of a bad insatll, or problems, from cloning. I do all the work, and I know how. It does not matter from which machine, to what machine the clone is going, either.
Now, let's discuss licensing. because someone buys a new machine, and wants to clone his old Tiger to it, this is not a violation, at all. If both machines have Tiger (not the case here, of course). But, let me say this. It is getting downright obnoxious for people with no idea, nor any standing in the issue, to keep mentioning licensing. It is irrelevant to the question, in almost all instances, and makes the writer seem pretentious and a little sanctimonious.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • How do I transfer all the information in my iTunes on my old mac book to my new mac book pro so I can sync my devices to the new machine with erasing all the data my iPhone and iPad?

I have just bought a new mac book pro and want to use this machine as the main computer to which I will sync my iPhone and iPad.
How do I transfer the information within iTunes on my old mac book so when I connect the devices the new machine will not erase all my data?
    Thank you

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

  • I just bought a new Macbook Pro and transferred my iTunes archive of music to it. How do I transfer the playlists from my other computer(s)? iTunes on the new machine wants to start from scratch.

How do I transfer playlists from my other Apple computer(s) to my new Macbook Pro? I think I have successfully moved the music (archive) but the new machine wants to start from scratch on the playlists.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751
Essentially you need to copy over the itunes folder
    username/Music/itunes
Over to your macbookpro I suggest using an ethernet cable as it is way quicker. Put it in the same spot on the new Macbook Pro
    username/music/
This should bring over the playlists etc. Then just put the music back in from the archive

  • How do i transfer money from my account to my new Apple ID account?

Hey guys, I recently made a new Apple ID account for my new MacBook Pro. However, I have over $97 on my old account that I got on a gift card. I was wondering if there is any way that I can transfer that money from that account into my new one? Thanks for the help in advance!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Unfortunately you cannot transfer credits from one account to another. Nor can you purchase gift vouchers to send to your new account with a credit balance. I believe the only way you can utilise your credit balance is to use it up.

  • I cannot transfer music from my external hard drive to my new machine. Help!

I backed up all of my iTunes from my old computer to my external hard drive. When I went to transfer them to my new computer, they did not show up. They can only be accessed if the hard drive is connected.  I downloaded the iTunes version for Windows 7- the 64 bit version- on my new machine. Any ideas? Thanks! Also, anything new I have purchased and downloaded onto the new machine is fine. Just all the old stuff doesn't "stick." It's only about 3,000 songs. I'm sure it is something silly and simple, yeah?

Copying the files directly from a Time Machine backup may be possible but I don't recommend it. Your new hard disk is essentially a new computer to Time Machine, and it will have problems understanding where to put the individual files. What you're trying to do is just not the right way to go about it.
To restore from a Time Machine backup, boot Lion Recovery and select "Restore from Time Machine backup".

  • Transfer account from old MBP to new one and now my account password does not work.

I trasferred my account from one MPB to a new one using targeted disk method.  I left my desk while it finished and came back to a registration page.  I registered and the system rebooted.  Now I see my login details but the password form my old Mac fails.  The hint it gives me also seems to be bogus becaues I've tried many variations of the hint and they also do not work.
I'm submitting this from my original MBP and had not problem using my old password logging in to it.  Why didn't my password transfer properly and now how do I fix my new MBP?
I made sure duing the transfer process to select everything for transfer -- accounts, applications, etc.  All check boxes were checked.

  • Material transfer - older to newer machine

    -
I just got a new “iMac”. — A 27 in. “duo”. Still in the box, still at the store.
And, I’m trying to gather as much information as I can, before shifting both my main focus, along with transfering, some portion of my main work at this point—(i.e. apps, files - general, plus larger catalogging of images)—from my older machine, to it.
I’m currently running OS 10.4.11, on an “eMac”. / - (w/ a full gig of RAM, plus a 300 gig HD.)
I’ve been told, that with using a fire-wire cable, I can transfer data from one machine to the other, with being guided where presented with the option/ opportunity to do so, where and when initially setting up my newer machine.
But, before I unpack my new machine, I’d like to find out - as much as can, more specifically, what’s possible - exactly, where considering this operation; .. if I elect to follow this line. — (Essentially, ... whether I can isolate all, of the material that I move over, and then, file it subsequently; .. which I would prefer. This, as opposed to its perhaps being routed to different areas - potentially, and “plugged in” to different things, more automatically - with my opting to follow this path; .. which I don’t, want.)
With this idea, I’m basically looking for some material online, which describes this process; .. i.e. the various options, more specific, it presents in fact.
This, or either perhaps, some simpler general guidance - relative to this idea, provided by someone here at this forum.
Of more incidental note - relative to this all above: I’ve got a 500 gig external HD - USB, set aside - also usable potentially, for whatever transfer of material.

Hi, when I get a new Mac this is what I do (5 family Macs)
Some of your 3rd party & other Apps will not run on the new 27"
I set up my Macs without Mig Asst. First set it up Out of Box, basic settings, I then Repair Permissions, then hopefully you use MobileMe -> you can Sync most of your Contacts, Bookmarks etc. etc..I then use the external HD to store my major files from the older Mac (sorting as required) & then you can dragNdrop onto your New Mac. 3rd party Apps will need Re-installing (CD-Rom or Internet)
You can also use your home network (if you have one) to accomplish some of the transfers..
I usually use the new Mac without to much on it for a few days, personalizing it to my requirements.
After that after each big transfer I run Repair Permissions...L
