New MacMini - Can't Repartition

Hey guys, I have a problem that I hope you can help with.
I have a new MacMini without the optical drive. Someone here took it and tried to install Linux on it and now I need to undo that and get MacOS back on there as the only OS. The problem is I can't get the Linux partition off of the drive.
I boot from the Recovery Partition and then run disk utility. When I try to set the disk back to one large pertition I get the error that says 'Failed to unmount the disk' and the re-partitioning fails.
Is there a way to undo this partition?

You probably can't repartition the entire HD because that would require unmounting the entire HD, which it can't do since you're booting from one of the partitions on it -- the recovery partition.
Got another Mac? Maybe if you put the Mini in Firewire Target Disk mode and hook it up to another Mac, you could then erase and repartition the entire drive.

  • New MacMini here...  Can't help posting...

Can't help but posting.  Got the new MacMini i7 and upgraded to the 8GB.  SSD + 750GB HD... POW!  Nice mini-screamer.  HP AirPrint printer... hook up and running with now problems with Mac, iPad2, and iPhone 4.  Lion... all aboard.  Sometimes life is good...

Keep looking for that serial number. These things are very valuable and need to be looked after.

So, did you upgrade the OS latlely?
Do you have a backup of the old OS in that case?
    It is supported by Vuescan...

You get to use VueScan for as long as you want before you buy it, so we recommend you test it before you buy it to make sure it meets your needs.

Isn't this a bit harsh? Naah I actually prefer to solve problems, and if I offer refunds, people give up too easily. If I can't solve your problem after you send a few Problem Reports (see above), I'm happy to give a refund.

  • I can't use iPhoto on my new MacMini. Why?

I can't use iPhoto on my new MacMini. I transferred my photo library from my old Mac tower's iPhoto library. The photos are in there - I can find them in the photo library - but I can't get them into iPhoto - or even open iPhoto. What happens is a message: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." Then, when I choose "Upgrade", I get : "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable." It goes on to tell me to Quit iPhoto, Reopen while keeping Option & Comand keys pressed." Did that over and over. Nothing changes. It also says: "Try restoring our photo library from back up" but I don't know what that means.  Help.
Note: My transferred photos are in there via: Finder / Judy / Library / iPhoto Library. But I can't work with them, e.g. edit,  in iPhoto or access them any other way than one at a time in that library... not exactly what I want or need.

I did everything you suggested and it seemed to be a repeat of everything I did yesterday. Going through "Macintosh HD" just got me to the same place I was in yesterday, going through Finder to 'Judy' to 'Library' to 'iPhoto Library'. There just isn't anything there that looks like what you describe: 'Permissions' or 'Rights & Priveges'. From everything I see when I monkey around in my 'User' folder, there are no restrictions on anything.
BDAqua is indicating one of the standard paths/locations for the iPhoto Library:
Macintosh HD -> Users -> Judy -> Pictures -> iPhoto Library
At least that's where mine was on Snow Leopard and is on Lion. The location you've indicated, isn't standard:
Macintosh HD -> Judy -> Library -> iPhoto Library
When you get to "iPhoto Library",
    - select/hightlight it
    - Then click cmd-I (or under the "File" menu, select "Get Info")
    - At the very bottom of the "Info" window you should "Sharing and Permissions" -- that's what BDAqua is asking about.

    Hello!
They're still being sold in some places: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywo rds=ilife+09&sprefix=iLife+09%2Caps%2C194&rh=n%3A229534%2Ck%3Ailife+09
However, do you absolutely NEED iDVD? There are alternatives, like Burn (free): http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
I suggest you try it out since it's free. Maybe it'll be enough.

  • Can't do a fresh install on my new MacMini!

Hello... After trying out my new MacMini and installing software and all I decided to make a fresh new installation of the OS. Unfortunately when i put the dvd in and boot from there or run the installer and the computer restarts it always gets stuck at the "Stars" or "space" screen and does not continue with the installation. Waited for about 30 minutes but nothing... Have tried this many many many frustrating times. Some info about the configuration of the computer.
-The MacOS dvd's are the ones that came with the computer.
-The computer is set up with a logitech cordless desktop keayboard and mouse but tried it also with a normal USB mouse and keyboard and the same thing happened.
    - Got an external disk connected with firewire cable but also i disconnected it when trying to do the clean install
    - Also i had the network cable removed as well in case it affected the fresh installation..
    - Checked the hard drive permissions etc as well...
Could someone help as it really bugs me and somehow i expected these things to be easier on a MAC...

Also the other DVD with the bundled software gives me the same result when i try to do the hardware check from it (stops in the "space" screen).
I do not understand what you mean by this. The Apple Hardware Test does not start up with the "Aurora" space desktop background but instead displays a very minimal all-blue background & a window that is essentially all text except for a few tabs & a progress bar. You do not seem to be running the AHT but something else, probably just the regular startup disk's copy of Leopard.
If so, (& your other comments suggest this) it seems likely that your difficulties involve some incompatibility with your keyboard that prevent it from sending the startup key combinations to the Mac at startup time. Your best bet is to try using an Apple branded, wired keyboard to test for this. If your friend does not have one, you may be able to take the Mac to the store you purchased it from & use one of their keyboards for the test.

  • New MacMini won't boot USB

    Good day!
I am posting again about the same computer to see if there is an answer for me out there.
I have a new MacMini without the optiocal drive. This is a computer that someone tried to put Linux on and left it was a 100gb partition for the MacOS and the rest for the Linux installation. I want to get it back to one large partition.
I know that I need to get the computer to boot from something else because the Recovery partition is on the HDD. To that end I have tried to boot this from an external USB DVD-RW drive and when it starts to boot from the disk it reads the DVD and then goes to the 'circle/slash' screen. I then made a USB drive bootable and restored the dmg file for my Lion disk to it and tried to boot from that. It shows in the options and then immediately goes to the 'circle/slash' screen.
I tried to flash the PRAM and got the same result.
I tested both items on another MacMini and they work. The test computer was a previous model with the optical drive.
If you have anything that could help I would appreciate that.

Get a Firewire cable... assuming they haven't removed FW from the Minis now too.
Put the Install DVD in the the other Mac, shut both down, connect with a Firewire cable, boot the other Mac holding the t key down, once the floating FW symbol shows up, boot the this Mac holding the Option/alt key down, eventually the Install Disk will show as a Boot Option on this one.
If you can get use of that other Mac, use FireWire target disk mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Yes the 2011 still have Firewire.
BigRobOk, wow someone really did a number on that MacMini -- I remember your other thread about repartitioning.
I suggest then you follow BDAqua's advice since you have an old Mini hand. That is, you want to put the new 2011 Mini in Firewire Target Disk mode, so it appears as an external drive to the old Mini. Boot the old Mini from the Install DVD that you made, which the old Mini is ok with. (BDAqua said this already.)
Since you've had issues before with the 2011 new Mini's HD, in particular the partition scheme, I suggest that you launch Disk Utility and erase/repartition the drive. Remember to check and verify that you're using the GUID partition type on the HD. I tend to see that in "Partition" tab, "Options" button.

  • IOS 4.2.1 sync calendar to new MacMini

I have a second gen iPod Touch that I just upgraded to iOS 4.2.1.  I'm connected to a new Mac Mini with OS 10.9.1.
Until now, I was syncing the calender on the iPod with iOS 3.1.3 and a Mac Mini running 10.4.
Now I cannot get the calendar to sync.  I do not see anything about syncing calendars in iTunes on the new MacMini.
Did the calendar sync move somewhere elese?
I can't find an online manual for iOS 4.2.1.  Is there one?

    See:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Sync contacts, calendars, and other info with iPod, iPhone, or iPad
    It includes:
If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud. For more information, see iCloud Help at icloud.com.
However yoo need iOS 5 for iCloud and a 2G only go to iOS 4.2.1

  • HI .. I have a new macmini 2.5 Ghz 10.7.3 Lion, had a problem today ,it froze so I could not shut down using mouse or tablet. used the power switch, when I tried to restart I got audible 'beeps' from it.

HI ....I have a new macmini 2.5 Ghz 10.7.3 Lion, had a problem today ,it froze so I could not shut down using mouse or tablet pen. used the power switch, when I tried to restart I got audible 'beeps' from it. I managed to restart it but kept getting a message come up on one ot the dual screens ' restart using the power swich to turn it off , then press it again to restart.'
This worked okay , but now it just keeps freezing whenever I start it up. I thought the issue could be my old Epson Expression 1680 scanner not being compatible , so I have unplugged it. I also had a look at the new memory I installed when I got it, but this seems not be the problem.
It is connected up to an Eizo Flexscan S2231W using a cable straight into the HDMI input , the other monitor is a small Acer using the VGA into Thunderbolt port.
When I turn the Eizo screen on first and then press the power button on the mac-mini, I hear the chime then the screen flahes the 'Digital no signal' message on and off for about 30 seconds , then the monitor comes on as normal. But it is still freezing up on me after using it for a while and I am having to use the power switch button to turn it off again.
    Can anyone help please.

I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen.

  • Mavericks update on brand new MacMini, HDMI went blurry!

I just bought a Mac Mini.  I wanted to upgrade it.  I plugged it into my Samsung HDMI/DVI/VGA 23" monitor.
On Mountain Lion, picture was awesome.  After the 9 hour upgrade process yesterday, the picture went crappy.
I'd like someone to explain to me how my brand new MacMini worked flawlessly before the upgrade to Mavericks?
I now have to drag the underscan slider half way across, and the text is blurry! It's like I stepped back in time 10 years.  How is that possible?  Can someone explain why?

  • I've downloaded pages 4.1 onto my new macmini (10.7.2) but the File menu does not include the save as function .  Any suggestions?

I've just downloaded Pages 4.1 onto my new macmini (OS X 10.7.2 Lion) but the "Save as ..." function does not appear in the File menu (although "Save ..." does appear).  I'm wasting lots of time saving copies and then changing the names via the desktop.  Any suggestions?  I've already checked updates and can't see any that look suitable.
Whoops!  No sooner had I posted this as a question when a whole host of queries popped up asking the same Q.  So now I know there is NO Save as in Pages 4.1, but a similar route using Duplicate.  I'm off to experiment.

  • Old Apple 20" monitor, new MacMini 2010, connectable?

I have an older 20" Apple Cinema Display. The clear plastic one with the ADC cable. I bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter brick so I could use it on my older MacMini. The new MacMini comes with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter in the box. Will this adapter work properly with my older monitor, as the monitor works great, or would it work better with a Mini Displayport-to-DVI adapter purchased separately?

You may have to be the guinea pig and tell us if it works. There always has to be someone who is the first to give something a try. Sometimes, based on how complicated the conversions are and whether the Mac can detect the display, two adapters/converters in tandem do not work.

  • New MacMini and small touchscreen compatibility...

    Greetings,
I'm trying to find either the correct (updated?) driver for a Lilliput 889GL-80NP/C/T touchscreen monitor (to be used with a new MacMini (2.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 / 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM running OS 10.7.3)...
...or a comparable small touchscreen monitor that will work with this new MacMini.  I'm looking at the Lilliput 869GL-80NP/C, but have so far been unable to determine if the touchscreen capabilities are functional with this computer.  Any ideas?  Anyone using a small touchscreen monitor with a newer MacMini?
The Lilliput 889GL-80NP/C/T works fine with my older MacMini (1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo / 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS 10.4.11), but with the same driver, I can't seem to get it to work properly with the new one (x/y axis weirdness) and the "TouchKit" app I use with the older MacMini doesn't seem to function with the new Mini either.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,
    ~tt
PS~ I've read all the existing posts related to this topic (dating back further than would ever be currently helpful -- some new info on this would be great (if there is any?)

    Thanks Viking,
Yes, I've actually been in contact with Lilliput (UK) and hope to hear back from them soon -- I was just wondering if anyone else had similar issues, and had found a solution.  Traditionally, Lilliput has provided products (and support) intended primarily for Windows based systems... however, I've been using their touchscreen monitors with my MacMini for years, and as I understand it, their Mac compatibility is increasing... that said, I wonder how easy (or difficult) Apple will make it for other vendors' touchscreens to play nice with their stuff.  I can almost hear the, "I'm sorry, you'll need to buy an iPad" mantras being practiced at Apple.  Anyhow, we shall see...

  • New MacMini and Linux

I'm trying to get Linux to install on my new MacMini but the monitor driver doesn't not appear to be correct. I've tried Edubuntu and Mint so far. Each time the installation will proceed until the monitor stops and goes into sleep mode because the Mini isn't sending a signal. I've tried both the analog and digital (HDMI) monitor outputs.
I know the new Mini is very new and is significantly upgraded. Has Linux not caught up yet?
The graphics card is a NVidia GeForce 320M
Does anyone have this kind of setup working?

Thanks for the suggestion. The issue is that I can't get Ubuntu or Mint installed (the screen goes dark long before the install is completed) so updating the nvidia driver for Linux isn't possible. nVidia doesn't post Mac drivers so that's not an option either.
I'm trying to set this up as a triple-boot (Mac, Windows 7, and Linux). I've done this many times on other Macs but am stuck on this Mac Mini. This is a training lab and I need all of these operating systems in their native environment (not through Parallels or similar).
    Thanks for your help!
