NEW MACMINI LEFT IN SLEEP MODE HAS TO BE RESTARTED 3 0R 4 TIMES A DAY
Help. I have a new macmini 2ghz intel with 2gb memory. Quite often when I return to it after an hour or so of sleep mode, I get a message on the screen advising I must shut down by turning off and restarting. There are no non apple items connected and no additional software. The problem is becoming more and more frequent. Also where on earth is the web page to be able to contact Apple re this?
The different languages does indeed mean these are, as suspected, Kernel Panics. A not uncommon cause is incompatible or incorrect printer drivers, so if you are interested in troubleshooting rather than simply have Apple, or your vendor if not Apple directly, deal with the problem (which would be my choice given your rights), I would remove all traces of the HP driver(s) and software and disconnect that device, then test the system out. Additionally, if the system came from a vendor other than Apple directly, it is likely they added the RAM themselves, in which case that could remain the problem since not all RAM is equal.
If this were my system (I don't have an Apple store anywhere near my location to provide that means to have a faulty system checked out) I would be curious to find the cause of the problem rather than simply return the system. To that end, I'd reformat and reinstall MacOS using the supplied install disc, then test the system out at that stage to see if it was stable or not with nothing but MacOS and the supplied bundle of software. If the system ran without panics at that point, it would tell me the system is basically sound, and that the problem is in something I'd added afterwards. On the other hand, if at that point the panics continue, it would demonstrate a problem with the system as supplied, warranting it's return. Here that return would be directly to Apple by calling them. There, your rights are with the vendor who sold the system to you - if Apple, then call them to initiate return. If not Apple, then contact the vendor and tell them the system is faulty and you wish to return it. Your right under the law of England and Wales is to a replacement, a repair, or a refund - it being your choice, not the vendor's.

Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
Many thanks
AndreHave you tried SMC and PRAM resets?

"Deep" sleep mode has been happening lately
My PB has been waking up from sleep in the state that happens when your battery drains completely, however, I have it plugged in to the AC, and when it comes back to life, the battery charge is close to full. What I am calling "deep sleep", is the condition where the display is just barely visible in black and white when you wake the PB up, and there is a dotted progress bar at the bottom, which advances as the PB reloads it's last awake state of operation. I am assuming this is a function of the internal battery that retains vital data when the PB sleeps automatically due to an exhausted battery. But...the battery isn't exhausted, and, the AC is plugged in.
Any ideas on what might be going on?Well, the "Safe Sleep" mode is if your battery ever runs down to zero, so you'll be safe (no pun intended) as long as you never let your battery run down to that.
Since the safe sleep mode kicks in when the AC is plugged in and/or when your power battery (not PRAM one) is not anywhere near empty, it's not really serving a purpose in that point in time--at least, I don't think it is--since you will always have your settings saved so as long as you shut down the computer while it is plugged in and/or the battery is in.
If you're having trouble with a faulty AC adapter, or your battery (not PRAM) is faulty then you would definitely want the "Safe Sleep" settings set to default and in place. But since that's not the case, you'd be safe turning it off if it was annoying you or a problem. -
Safe to leave NEW macbook pro in sleep mode all day?
This is my first Macbook Pro and wonder if it's safe to leave this thing in sleep mode plugged in all day while at work? I did this w/my ibook but read some stories of the Macbook Pro catching fire??
What's going on with this rumor?
Thanks!I did this w/my ibook but read some stories of the Macbook Pro catching fire??
You're probably referring to PowerBooks equipped with the faulty Lithium-ion batteries from Sony ? I haven't been around lately but I've never heard of Macbook Pros catching fire. The MBPs use Lithium polymer batteries that don't contain the flammable organic solvents found in Lithium-ion batteries.

I occasionally have issues waking my macbook pro up from sleep mode resulting in my need to restart the computer. I dislike all of my programs opening at once when I do get the computer started becasue it slows the cpu down. The apple store replaced the sleep part but the problem is still there. Note: i never had this problem with snow leopard
I'm not certain but my new MBA 13...when in sleep mode comes back on from a black screen when I simply click on the left mouse button. Also, one time I did a SECURE EMPTY TRASH on files that totalled more than 1GB and it took so long that the fan kept increasing in speed so I pressed on the POWER button and the MBA shut...I was able to boot up with no problem. As a rule, I now only do secured erases for trash bin data totalling 500mb or less...anything above that gets a regular erase (dump).

Imac shuts down when it goes to sleep and has to be restarted
if my computer falls into sleep mode it automatically shuts down and i have to hold power to start up. When it restarts it says it was a kernel panic. I have tested all the hardware with the tools disk and all systems passed. I am running Lion.

Black Screen after sleep mode, and even after restarting
I've had problems with black screen before, usually after sleep mode. I usually then restart the computer, the sound of turning the computer on is heard and then it is working perfectly...however since last night I tried to restart it, the sound of turning the computer on was heard at a lower level of volume, but the black screen is still there...I have disconnected the computer, taken the battery of the MBP reinsert it, plugged it and turned it on. It worked once, but it is no longer working...PLEASE HELP!!!!!! SOON!!!! I have projects to turn in in a couple of hours.
By the way I have the Snow Leopard OS system

Why did my new iMac wake from sleep mode 3 times last night, by itself
.. after the third time within the 3am hour, I had to shut it down.
Probably your mouse detected some movement. Try placing it on an opaque white surface, like a notepad.

No audio at new MacBookPro retina after sleep mode
Once my MacBookPro Retina late 2013 all audio is dead, either in iTunes or on websites in Safari or anywhere else, even system sounds.
Have to restart it to have sound back. Already cleared PRAM but nothing changed. Any idea?Hi Matthias,
If you are having intermittent audio issues on your MacBook Pro, but restarting temporarily resolves it, you may want to try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC):

Ipod touch crashes when in sleep mode... needs to be reset every time
When my ipod goes into sleep ("slide to unlock") mode and has been left for more than five minutes, it won't come back to life without holding down both buttons to reset it. It also seems to kill the battery when it goes into the crash state.
This only happens with the application upgrades (maps etc) applied.
I have tried reset, restore etc. The only fix is to revert back to pre upgrade verions.
This is frustrating and makes it difficult to use the ipod. Does anyone have any similar experiences or suggestions...?That is the first thing I tried when I got my iPod back from AppleCare and they said the technicians couldn't find anything wrong with it. I restored it in iTunes, only this time I set it up as NEW and did not restore from back-up , thinking that could have been the problem. Only mine still froze up once that night after I set it up as a new pod. So it froze up once on Thursday , no times yesterday and not at all so far today?? So maybe seting it up as a new pod and then resetting it once cleared out whatever was causing the error? I guess we will see.
Pardon my ignorance but what manner of communication did you use to speak with iPod tech support?

I am having an issue in making power nap work on Mountain Lion on my mid 2011 Mac Book Air. It is enabled in system preferences but with time machine and sleeping overnight it did not seem to do hourly back up as stated or any other functions of power nap that I know of. it has been enabeled on both battery and plug in dc and I did leave it on plug in overnight.

"Exact same problem" seldom proves to be the issue here. Example: kerbmac has installed some Symantec product--they are poison to Macs.
Each of you please start a new thread. It is terribly difficult to help more than one person per thread when complex issues are involved. It dilutes the help due the orignal poster, and "tag-ons" are often ignored by helpers here. Be sure to post your details in the new threads.
This also is often better than posting crash logs, at least early in the process: Please download and install this free utility:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.
Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.
Starting your own thread is the best way to get the targeted help you need. Thank you. -
Never carry your MBP in sleep mode
Little story to tell you.
Yesterday I went to my brothers and decided to take my 2.8Ghz 15" MBP with me.
Its in a speck case with a Moshi keypad cover. I slipped it into my Targa laptop case and off I went. What I didnt realise was I had left it in sleep mode.
After being over my brothers for about 3 hours I grabbed the Targa case to get the MBP out... Wow it was really hot. I quickly unzipped it and the MBP in side was extremely hot with the fans running flat out. I reckon I could of fried an egg on it no joking. I mean the whole thing was very very hot and no response from it. The poor old Moshi cover was like melted plastic.
Any way I popped it out the Speck case and put it on a cool surface. The flashing sleep light was off and all seemed dead apart from the fans howling.
After about 2 mins I pressed the power button and up it came. It cooled very quickly and the fans soon stabilised back to normal. The battery was at 5% and was fully charged when I left home.
All seems well now.
My advise is to never travel with your MBP in sleep mode and also remember that a Moshi Keyboard skin stops the heat dissipating as does the Speck case.
So you guys who are worried about a 100 degrees temperature, thats peanuts against how hot mine was.
CarloI don't agree with this advice. I routinely carry various Apple laptops in sleep mode, only shutting down/restarting every couple weeks. I go on long-distance trips this way, never shutting down during the trip itself.
I'll tell you what the advice should really be: When you close the lid, wait until the sleep light begins to pulse. If it does not, you know that it has not successfully entered sleep and you need to find out why.
Yes, there can be a problem with the pre-unibody MacBook Pros (I'm typing on a 2008 model right now) where the mechanical latch releases while the laptop is inside a case and it turns on and heats up in the enclosed space. To minimize the possibility of this happening, I have turned off the "lidwake" feature, which you can easily do as described here. If you do this, after opening the lid the Mac won't wake up until a key is pressed.
The new unibody MacBook Pros are unlikely to pop open in a bag, because their spring loading works the other way, to keep the lid closed. You really have to yank them open. -
Etch A Sketch Problem - failure to wake from sleep mode
My iMac fails to recover from sleep mode. I have only noticed the problem when it has been left in sleep mode overnight. When I try to wake it, the last screen viewed appears. The mouse moves the cursor, but a trail of dark grey is made as you move the cursor. It operates much like an Etch A Sketch. When the power button is pressed, the log-in screen appears. After logging in, the iMac seems to operate properly. This just started last week. I haven't loaded any new programs. Has anyone else experienced this problem? What is the cause and a possible solution?
Here's the article, review the bottom of the article.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4135?viewlocale=en_US
It's most often caused by automatic logoff -
My macbook is two and half year old, going to sleep mode randomly
Having used this Macbook for almost two and half years, my machine has suddenly generated the problem of going to random sleep. It started as an infrequent thing, then it started happening on a regular basis, to the point that it became almost impossible to work with it. When the computer goes to sleep mode, it doesn't wake up with any key, it has to be woken up by pressing the power button lightly.
Here are the steps I took:
1. The normal thing I did was search Apple Forum and then reset SMC, PRam, then changed energy saving options, everything. Nothing worked.
2. Ran the hardware test and no problems found.
3. Ran the Macbook with all options: with just the battery, without the Magsafe connected, with Battery and Magsafe connected together, with battery removed and the computer running on Magsafe only. Random Sleep continues
4. Thought must be a connection issue and ran to Apple Store in Kolkata, India, thinking that it could be a connection issue with the sleep-mode cable. Apple Store kept the Macbook for seven days, saying that they needed to check the machine, returned it on the seventh day saying that the machine was fine and charged me Indian Rupee 1,500/- (about $ 34). I came back home and the problem persists.
(Here I would like to add that Apple Service in Kolkata *****, probably ***** all over India, simply because Apple is not a major player in this country. The service engineer at Apple Store was at a loss with my problem and after seven days could only say, "We have done our internal tests and found no problem with your Macbook." When I asked about the Sleep Mode sensor connection, he said, "That is working fine, we have checked that.")
5. After coming back home, I faced the same problem, this time with lesser time gap. It would go off to sleep every one minute or so. I decided to set my computer on "never to sleep mode" in the enery saving option. Alas, that didn't help either.
6. I redid the hardware check, only to find that my computer hasn't detected any hardware problem.
7. Now, as a previous Windows user, I thought that the problem must have been with the OS. So, at the risk of losing all my files, I decided to reload the OS. (My original OS DVD was Leopard, but it was later upgraded to Snow Leopard by the vendor free of cost). I took backup in Time Machine, and backed up the documents in another Disk and reloaded the OS. All seemed fine so far, for about 10 minutes. I was now confident that finally I could solve the problem and was then planning to migrate my previous files to my newly loaded OS-X. Alas, I was wrong. Before I could connect the external HDD to my computer, my Macbook went back to its previous trick of falling asleep.
I'll definitely take back my Macbook to Apple Care tomorrow, but with my experience here in Kolkata, don't know whether they would be able to solve anything. Last time I had to show them the posts in Apple Forum to prove that Random Sleep is a problem that happens to Macbook.
PS: My Macbook is with aluminium body bought in January 2009. Out of warranty. My optical drive conked off long ago (after about 15 months or so after I bought the Macbook) and I live with an external drive. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
