New MacMini + Old FireWire = Sad face

I just bought a new Mac Mini to replace my dying MacBook Pro (both 10.6.3). Once I got a FireWire 800->400 converter pigtail, everything transferred over OK using Target Disk mode from the old Mac, so I know that the FireWire is working. However, the MacMini doesn't see two of my older FireWire peripherals: a LaCie external drive and my Mackie Onyx Satellite audio I/O unit. They don't show up at all, even in System Profiler. Just to verify, I brought the LaCie drive into work and hooked it up to an older Mac I have here, and it's behaving fine.
Anybody got any insight?

OK, half the problem is solved. I did a little sniffing around and discovered that there was no FireWire Audio support installed. For some goofy reason, it apparently isn't included in a 10.6 installation. (The extension is called "AppleFWAudio".) I signed on to the Apple Developer site and downloaded the FireWire developer package, which includes a folder called FireWireAudio inside FireWireComponents inside FireWireSDK26. In there we can find several different AppleFWAudio extensions. Installing the experimental AppleFWAudio-2.4.1fc1 driver appears to have fixed my Onyx audio problem.
Still no answer on the LaCie drive. I've opened a trouble ticket with LaCie.

    ...all in once!!! Can anyone diagnose, or have experienced this problem? Tried all the reset steps, it attempts to boot to but goes back to the "Sad Face"
    TIA,
      Windows XP

    well i have some bad news for you. a sad face is almost always a hard drive failure problem. you say you have tried to reset it and thats a good first step. but have you tried to restore your ipod? if not the go to your ipod updater in the start menu by going to programs and then ipod and then restore and try to restore it. if this doesnt work then that is a bad thing and you are going to have to send it in for service. i hope it is under warrenty if this is the case cuz it will cost you aprox. $250 to fix and you might as well buy a brand new one. let me know how it goes.

  • The documents didnt migrate to my new MacMini from the old one

    My documents didn't migrate to my new MacMini from the old one.  How do I get them back?

    connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy whatever you need to the new Mac.

    I have inherited an ICloud account from one of my employers when transferring from old MacBook Pro (which belonged to them) to new MacMini and need to separate from this, presumably by setting up a new ICloud account.  How do I do this ?  And is there any danger, in doing so, that I might delete any of her ICloud information ?

    Sign out in System Preferences>iCloud. This will remove any synced data such as Calendars, emails and Contacts from your Mac, but will have no effect on the data on the server - so that other devices logged into it will continue to see the data.

    I'll venture that your problem here is that you're using two very different versions of Mac OS X.  The USB adapter has been useful to me when making big downloads or while using other networks, but it might not be your case.
    Here's what I would advise, though it may be less than stellar:  Copy the files you need into folders and move them through a USB flash drive or using that external hard drive of yours. (Could the format be the reason your MBA can't see it?). Some stuff like calendars and contacts can be exported too. At least in Lion, I haven't used Tiger in a while.
    Good luck.

  • How do I transfer music and photos from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. Have an old FireWire but it does not fit the new iMac

    I am trying to transfer photos, music, etc from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. The Power Mac is too old for the migration assistant to help. I have an old Firewire but it does not fit the new iMac. Any suggestions? If a Firewire is the best option which one do I need? Thanks.

    You need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter or cable or a external USB 2/3 drive (self powered) it can default to the old USB the G5 uses 1 or 2.

    After hooking up my old iMac (2 years old) to a brand new one, via firewire, and checking every box to copy, it didn't copy my iTunes or iPhoto libraries to the new computer. Does this have to be done with DVDs, or through an iPod?
    Only applications, Logic, photoshop etc. copied onto the new iMac.

  • Transferring Data from old iMac to new iMac via Firewire

    I am having difficulty transferring data from my old iMac to my new iMac via firewire. Per the instructions contained in migration assistant, when I hold down the letter "T" key during startup of the "old" mac the firewire symbol does not appear. Given that the firewire symbol does not appear I am unable to proceed with the transfer. Of note, my new Mac is the '09 24" iMac and my old iMac is the early 2006 model with the 17" screen. Incidentally, I am using the following cable contained in the attached link along with the adaptor (400) with respect to my old iMac.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi Todd
    Not sure why that wouldn't work, but it could be that cable and adapter setup as the Early Core Duo only supports firewire 400.
    You should try a 9 to 6 Pin Bilingual FireWire Cable:

  • Old Macmini ignores ownership on external HD's, new Macmini does not.

    Hi - my old Mac mini has a couple of external HD's set to "ignore ownership on this volume", as they are just storing personal files, one backing up the other nightly. I transferred them to a new Macmini, only to find my backup software won't update from one external to the other (permissions type error messages), and the "ignore ownership on this volume" checkboxes on each are not checked, and greyed out.
    I've tranferred the HD's back to the old Macmini, and presto the "ignore ownership on this volume" boxes are now checked again. How can I make this behaviour transfer safely to the new comp?

    Thank you! I haven't yet dared try this, but I've found the following info that explains those commands in a fashion even I could understand - I take it this will work for all enclosed folders too? -
    chmod stands for "Change Mode".
    The numbers part is a little more complicated.... "777" is three numbers..to be nerdy and specific.. it is three 3 digit binary (base 2) numbers converted into three 1 digit octal (base 8) numbers.
    The first number stands for "user", the second group stands for "group" and the final number stands for "other". There are three possible things that can be done with a file: read, write, and execute.. Here is a little reference:
    execute = 001 in binary = 1 in octal
    write = 010 in binary = 2 in octal
    read = 100 in binary = 4 in octal
    So where does the 7 come from?
    7 in binary = 111 in decimal = read, write, execute
    So you get:
    read write execute = 111 = 1 + 2 + 4 = 7
    read write no execute = 110 = 4 + 2 = 6
    read no write execute = 101 = 4 + 1 = 5
    read no write no execute = 100 = 4
    no read write execute = 011 = 2 + 1 = 3
    no read write no execute = 010 = 2
    no read no write execute = 001 = 1
    no read no write no execute = 000 = 0
    <http://www.websitebabble.com/uploading-files-ftp/1667-what-chmod-777-a.html>
    I'll have a go in the next few days (will need to switch the HD's back to the new comp first etc) when I'm feeling brave.

  • Moving files from old Mac to new one, via Firewire

    I have an old G4, and recently bought a new iMac. I'm trying to transfer the files from my old computer to the new one via firewire (and I've also tried via ethernet cable). The G4 has two hard drives, one with system files, the other just used for data. When I connect the Macs by Firewire, with the G4 in Target mode, the iMac only recognizes the data hard drive. Is there a reason that anybody can think of why the system drive wouldn't show up?

    FireWire Target Disk mode only connects to the master ATA drive on the ATA 0 bus; if there's nothing at that location, the computer will shut down instead.

    Hello!
    They're still being sold in some places: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywo rds=ilife+09&sprefix=iLife+09%2Caps%2C194&rh=n%3A229534%2Ck%3Ailife+09
    However, do you absolutely NEED iDVD? There are alternatives, like Burn (free): http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
    I suggest you try it out since it's free. Maybe it'll be enough.

  • Charging New iPod with Old FireWire Charger

    Hi, this should be a quick one to solve... I have an old FireWire AC Charger from a 2nd (or 3rd?) Gen iPod I no longer use, and the original FW cable. The dock connector on the old FW cable fits my newer iPods (5.5G iPod Video and a Touch), can the FW AC charger be used to charger these newer USB-only iPods, or will it fry them?
    If so, will it also work with a Nano? I want to get one for a friend who doesn't own a computer, so a wall charger will be their only way to charge (in which case I'll just by a new wall charger if the old FW one is incompatible).
    Thanks!
    (Note: I don't need it to transfer data, just to charge)

    Yes, you can charge new iPod off older Firewire chargers. Just no data transfer.
    Cheers,

  • Old Apple 20" monitor, new MacMini 2010, connectable?

    I have an older 20" Apple Cinema Display. The clear plastic one with the ADC cable. I bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter brick so I could use it on my older MacMini. The new MacMini comes with the HDMI-to-DVI adapter in the box. Will this adapter work properly with my older monitor, as the monitor works great, or would it work better with a Mini Displayport-to-DVI adapter purchased separately?

    You may have to be the guinea pig and tell us if it works. There always has to be someone who is the first to give something a try. Sometimes, based on how complicated the conversions are and whether the Mac can detect the display, two adapters/converters in tandem do not work.
