New MacMini's Dual Layer Drive

Most people know that new MacMini currently on the market is register at 1.5GHz not 1.42. Also Vidoe RAM is 64MB not 32MB as well as the superdrive is matsushita UJ-845. UJ-845 is listed as DL drive and from the google it is DL drive.
On my other post, I have been asked if I was able to write Dual Layer Media. I have tried last evening and write 7.9GB of information on Fujifilm 2.4X DVD+R DL medial using the Mac native writer program. I have old toast 5.2.3 so didn't even try but it was success.
It does took some time but Its sweet deal.
Still think PowerPC is a still sweet processor over Intel but have to see when it comes out..

Maybe it's my training that states to focus on what we can do, but I'd suggest changing the double negatives to positives. Let me know as that does leave out the "if and only if" implication of the "can't" statements which you may want to keep.

17" G4 Powerbook no "Dual Layer" drive...

A friend asked a question this morning that I did not have the answer to;
"Can a G4 Powerbook's non dual-layer DVD drive read a dual layer install disc?"
We discussed it for a bit and then I decided to turn to the minds on the forum here. I viewed the post by - "a brody" from Dec. 23, 2009 - but no specific answer jumped out at me concerning this particular question.

The drive in question is a Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E. This Powerbook was manufactured in 2005. (Forgive me if this has been answered some place else on this forum).

Thanks for your response. I was speaking to a qualified person about this before I returned to the forum and saw your answer. We all agree apparently, concerning reading "DL" discs on this type of "SL" drive.
The additional info I got, (concerning any "Apple OS upgrades") was that the "Leopard" OS program series was written as an "interim" OS during the transition period from the older G4 Powerbooks to the newer "re-chipped" Mac computers; thus the Leopard OS disc's ability to be read by the older optical drives found in many of the G4 Powerbooks.

URGENT Dual Layer Drive question - PLEASE HELP

I have just completed a 28 hour compression of a 720p feature movie for a public screening tonight, and the file size is a little too big for a standard DVD.
The solution seem to me to be to purchase an external dual-layer burner.
1) Can someone recommend a burner that is compatible with my system, which is a G5, Dual 2Ghz with Final Cut Studio, Ver 1?
2) Since I have never needed to work with dual- layer discs before, is my thinking flawed here? These dual-layer discs WILL play back on a standard DVD player, right?
Although I have been an editor for 23 years, I have never had the need for a larger DVD format than the standard 4.7gb DVD-5 disc, so I am feeling like a real rookie right now.
I hope I am on the right track here, and that someone can guide me into the light! As always, I appreciate any and all help.

I've used only internal Dual layer, Opticarc AD-7170A that shipped with new Mac, and Pioneer DVR-108 that I put in my old G4.
The pioneer 108 has been a wonderful burner (reg and DL) over all other burners for me, but is a old model.
I have used the Pioneer 108 with a firewire external HD case with no problem (as a option)
Roxio's Toast is a must (by all accounts) to regulate the burn speed. Never a problem for me... I have read the slower the burn the better the disc reading by the player, I usually burn at 2x for DL then check on a very old Sony.. if it plays there it plays everywhere...
Verbatim DVD+R DL media has worked also with no problem.

DVD Dual-Layer Drives Recommendations

I am looking to get a Dual Layer DVD drive.
Does anybody have a good recommendation? Internal? or External?
Oh by the way, I am still using DVD SP2, do I need to upgrade?

I am under the impression that even Toast 7 will not read the dual layer break point set by DVDSP in either a VIDEO_TS or a disc image. Believe me, I would love to find out that I'm wrong on this. This ability alone would be worth the price of the upgrade for me (I'm still using Toast 6).
Someone asked a question specifically about this either late last week or early this week in this forum, and I believe it went unanswered.

I have not used Discribe, so I can't speak for its abilities. Its website isn't very helpful in this regard.

Hey everybody. I am wandering if my dvd/cd burner is a Dual Layer Burner or not? I can't find any info on it so I have no idea. I was talking to somebody and they said that if it's not, then sometimes, you can update them to where they are DL.
If incase it isn't a Dual Layer Burner, then how do I update it? and if it's not, or not updateable, then I guess I'm stuck buying an external one. My DVD/CD-ROM drive is hpCDDVDW SN-208BB SATA CdRom Device That's what it says in my device manager anyway. Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Did you take a look into the user manual?
Usually you should find the list of compatible drives in this document.
In my user manual I have found a compatible drives for my notebook.
I found the info that these drives could works on this notebook. But dont know what drive could handle the DL medias:

LaCie Dual Layer Drive Sense key error

I've been getting this error while burning dual layers:
Sense Key = Medium Error
Sense Code = 0x0C
WRITE ERROR
Then after clicking "OK", I get this:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x72, 0x03
Session Fixation Error
INCOMPLETE TRACK IN SESSION
Anyone have any idea what's up? I've been using the same Dual Layer disks (Ridata), and the problem occurred rarely, but now it's half the time.
I'm using LaCie DL DVD-RW on iMac G4 OS 10.4.5

Are you using DVD-R DL media or DVD+R DL media?
Just as an experiment I would try a different manufacturer. It's possible you got a bad batch.
Is the LaCie new or old? Could the lens be dirty? I think that dirty lenses usually give people the "power calibration" error, but it might be worth a try to purchase and run a lens cleaning disc through it.

Can't burn Dual Layer DVD-R on new Mac Pro?
I have a new Mac Pro with Pioneer DVD burner built in. I've since found out that it only burns Dual Layer +R type, and not the -R type.
My replication company need a Dual Layer -R type DVD as they can't get a glass-master off the +R type Dual Layer discs.
Can anyone recommend/suggest a cheap way of being able to either master off a DVD to Dual Layer -R disc, or perhaps copy my Dual Layer +R to a Dual Layer -R ?

Everything I have ever read about the DVD-R DL discs says the layer break can't be chosen by the author. It is not a DVDSP issue; it is an issue with the media.
This is actually listed in the DVDSP 4.1 Late Breaking News on page 15:
"Using DVD-R Dual-Layer Media
If your system contains a DVD drive that can write to the new DVD-R dual-layer media, you can burn your DVD project to it with DVD Studio Pro. However, there are several issues:
Since there is no current way for DVD Studio Pro to identify DVD-R dual-layer media as having two layers, burning a dual-layer project to it results in a warning appearing telling you that the DVD media may have insufficient room to hold the project. This message is based on the assumption that the disc is single layer. Both layers of the disc will be written to as needed, however, when you click Continue.
If you are burning a dual-layer project, the break point you set will not affect where the layer break actually occurs. Instead, the first layer is written to until filled, at which point the drive switches to writing to the second layer.
The switch between layers is a seamless layer change not supported by some DVD players, which may stop playing the disc when the switch point is reached.
Important: Do not use DVD-R dual-layer media unless these issues do not impact your project.

Can you tell us what drive you have and what firmware (revision) it is?

Dual Purpose Dual Layer DVD drive recommendations...

I work in both a Mac and PC environment( favoring the former) but I have a need to update my Win XP production machine with a DVD drive (read more than read/write) to do some testing for a project.
The Plextor offerings fit the XP bill but the LaCie with LightScribe would be nicer.
Is there a third or 4th choice among the discussion lists as only the above two were returned on a search of the archives. I'd really like to have the option of using the unit in either environment.

The Dell only has USB. I'm not motivated to put any $ into this area so I'll put the dual layer drive aside and just get something to have a PC with DVD for the project.

Dual Layer no longer shows up

After wiping my hard drive and reinstalling all software, the dual layer option in iDVD 5.01 no longer shows in the settings. Why not? It was working before.
Two years ago I purchased a newer Pioneer 109 Dual Layer bruner for my iMac, I installed the French patch back then, and the Dual Layer option showed up, and I burned doual layer just fine. After my reninstall of softwares I again installed the French patch, but this time, ...no Dual Layer option. Dang.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Does my iMac have a dual layer burner?

I'm trying to burn a 155 minute dvd. I only have 120 minute blank dvds.
I'm told I need to buy dual layer dvds but this will only work if I have a dual layer burner.
I have a PIONEER DVD-RW DVRTS09.
Am I good to go?

The best way to find out if you have a Dual Layer DVD Burner, is to click  then "About This Mac" then Click on More Info, then in the new System Profiler window, on the left hand side select "Disc Burning". Youll be presented with something that looks like this (This is from my 24-inch Late 2006 iMac):
OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A:

Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache:          2048 KB
Reads DVD:          Yes

Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
What you'll be looking for here, in the DVD-Write section which I've bolded and underlined for quick spotting, if you have -R DL and/or +R DL, those are Dual Layer DVDs that you can write to.
***Be careful as some Macs shipped with Dual Layer Drives (MATSHITA Brand) that only burned +R DL Dual Layer DVDs, meaning you CANNOT burn -R DL Dual Layer DVDs. So make sure you verify that your drive supports the dual layer DVDs that youll be purchasing before you go to the store.

Dual Layer Break Point problem

Hi,
I just found out after I updated DSP 4 to version 4.0.3 my Layer 1 on every project since updating gets corrupted!
I thought it was the Dual Layer discs I used that caused the problem, but after I re-installed DVD Studio to the original version 4.0.0 the same project worked perfect.
Anyone else have issues with Dual Layer Break Point after updating to 4.0.3?
I have tried different chapters as layerbreak points on my project, and even a test project, with the same result. The finished discs is barely playable on some DVD players, showing wierd interference and noise, and DVD Player on mac crashes when reaching the dual layer break point, and the plant i send the master have a software to check DVDs and they said that it couldnt find/was corrupt Layer 1 on one of my discs. Hope someone can fix this, DSP is the best software otherwise!

Dual Layer DVD-R are freezing

I got Lacie dual layer recorder (*** according consumer report)
I made 5 copies 2 hours DVD from Mpeg2, which exported from FCP5. Each copy either freezes or skips in a half way. My media is 4X RiData. I wonder if the DVD was burned to fast. I have to use 1X. If DVD players are playing fine the commercial DVD, which are dual layers, why they would not play well my burned copies? Is there a setting to tell the DVD burner to use a slow, 1X speed?
