New macpro fan knocking

Hi guys,
I have a new mac pro and am ultra happy with it.
One tiny problem is the front fan is making a knocking noise like it's tapping on something, not incredibly loud but something i would like to fix.
It is defiantly the fan as i stop it with my finger and the knocking stopped and it does appear to be touching anything.
It this something that will wear off in time or something I should try and do something out?
I have had a look from opening the side and all appears to be ok, i really need to see it from the front is there anyway I can do that?
Many thanks

When we had our replaced, they sent out a tech to do it. I am not sure how they would handle yours. I am not sure if Apple does in-home repairs anymore. According to the manual, you would have to remove the hard drives in bays 1 and 2, any 12" PCI-express cards (video cards), and the processor heatsink cover. Not too hard, but kinda detail oriented, not for the faint of heart. Being it is so new, I would try and get the to send a tech to do in in-home.....good-will and all. Never hurts to ask.

  • Do the new MacPro fans stop in sleep mode?

The fans on my previous generation 8 core MacPro never stop, even when you try to put the system to sleep. So it basically never goes to sleep. Do the new MacPros actually go to sleep?

  • Can an early 2008 MacPro be reconfigured as an effective video server for 2 27" 2013 iMacs plus a New MACPRO (to be released) and how would be the best way to do it.

We are a small eiting studio with an early 2008 MacPro (maxed out on ram) with a 4 Port SATA card, 2 27" 2013 iMac's, and we will be purchasing a new MACPRO once they're released.  We work with Final Cut X primarily and would like to create a server solution to share media assets between the computers as well as insure our media assets are protected.  Ultimately we see us moving toward an LTO tape backup solution for projects and we currently use the Acera 8 slot 32tb Raid for media storage.  We use .DMG's to organize projects and we've had success networking the MacPro to one of the 27" iMac's and we can effectively mount projects off of the RAID on to both computers as long as the .DMG for that project isn't mounted on both computers.  However we can really only run background processing (like rendering or inputing video) we can't really edit as it appears even with a CAT6 capabled connecting the two still isn't enough to be able to edit.
Ideally when the new macpro comes out we would like to explore the ability of turning the 2008 MacPro into our server and buy an attached storage solution but I'm unsure if this will work, what we would need to do to make it work efficiently (read fast), and what my limitations might be.  Is it as easy as installing a new PCI 4port 1gigE card in the back and connecting our 2 27" Imacs and the to be purchased new MACPRO to that and insalling OS X Server?
Most of our projects are recurring and ongoing and require us to share our extensive library of live performances as well as insure its availibilty all the time without having to install the RAID set associated with those projects.  We have about 80tb's of video we'd like to keep accessible.
Any help is appreciated and I would be glad to fill in any blanks if I left any.
Lastly, I might add that I'm not a fan of onebox solutions from the vendors, I believe that Apple has the products I need to do what I'm talking about and most 3rd party one-box solutions end up out-moded with in years of purchase.

Gigabit Ethernet can be limiting for large file transfers, which usually segues into either 10 GbE NICs and/or (less desirably) link aggregation and/or an Xsan configuration with Fibre Channel SAN storage, if you really needed the I/O speed and scale.
If you're serving large volumes of data and it's the the server-to-host Gigabit Ethernet link that is the limit (as differentiated from the RAID array or related I/O link as the bottleneck), then you're left to either or both 10 GbE NICs and FC HBAs, whether via Thunderbolt HBA adapter or via FC HBA in a PCIe slot.  (Thunderbolt is not an option on any current Mac Pro or Mac Pro Server I'm aware of.  That'd be PCIe.  Conversely, recent iMac systems have Thunderbolt and no PCIe.  And there's no Thunderbolt to 10 GbE NIC listed by Apple.)
Discussions of the new Mac Pro are premature, beyond the information Apple has posted.  (But I'd probably also wait a month or three after release of any new hardware and software, in any event.)

  • No eSATA, no USB 3.0, no Blu-ray drive in new MacPro's??

Did I miss something, I was going thru the specs and about to hit the Buy Now button, but I don't see any support for USB 3.0 and no option to add a Blu-ray drive?? Does anyone who plans to use a new MacPro work in something less than HD video? I can't remember the last time I burned a DVD.
For a base price of $5000 for 12 core, I kinda expected BD and USB 3.0 and eSATA. I know Intel server class motherboards (which is what Apple use) have USB 3.0. So I'm assuming the lack of BD drive and USB 3.0 is because of OS X limitation and not the hardware? But why no eSATA?
Is this the same deal as with my 2007 MacPro where the eSATA exist but I have to get a cable and backing plate to use them? As it stands right now my 2007 MacPro using eSATA BD drive is more capable than a New MacPro??
Please tell me I'm wrong? Can anyone clarify?
    Thanks, Rob.

    Tom,
Interesting -- I can see why BD was left out in OS (no secret Mr. Jobs hates Sony royalties), but not necessarily why it was left out as an optional drive (we have other software that can deal with BD authoring/burning). Like it or not, BD is here to stay and can't be ignored forever, it's a matter of fullfilling a consumer choice (regardless of Mr Job's feelings towards it).
Makes sense now that you've said the motherboard didn't get updated ... in motherboard terms staying with a 1+ year older motherboard in a new 2010 MacPro is definitely not ideal. Motherboard changes come out almost every 3 months to accomodate new onboard components.
I'm a fan of onboard hard wired components vs. plug-in card connections when it comes to data transfer specifications (like eSATA, USB 3.0, etc.) just because hard wire provides a better electrical connection.
May have to sit this update out until the motherboard gets updated. True, I could get USB 3.0, and eSATA with expansion cards ... but I've got plans for those slots and can't really spare them just for data transfer use ... onboard solution would have been much better for me.
Maybe all the Apple engineers were working on the iPhone 4 --- doooh!! Lets hope NOT!
Glad they offer ATI 5870, I have two of these in a Windows PC and they are very nice cards -- but noisey when pushed hard. Lets see how they work with Cinema 4D and Motion 4.
Apple's memory out to lunch but their SSD 512GB are actually pretty close to industry prices -- I always start with stripped base unit and get components from NewEgg for 1/3 of the price (in most cases).

  • New MacPro..I'm getting crazy because of errors

    hey people,
i bought mid last year the new macpro, the lowspec config but with 16GBRam and the D700's instead of the d300's. running 10.9.5
i'm a freelance director and editor, and the decision why i bought the macpro, was the power, portability and the promised stability.
mostly when i do heavier grading in blackmagics davinci resolve (which is handled as a reference on the official macpro website!) i get faulty corrupt lines on the export.
    see here:
    http://i.imgur.com/qDtQqBc.jpg
you see the corrupt line in the picture?
but now i'm getting these lines also when exporting from premiere pro CC - ProRes 720p. just the editing - no grading, effects. etc. this just cant be possible..and its driving me crazy.
    you can see here examples:
    http://i.imgur.com/0WL0fOJ.png
    http://i.imgur.com/2t0hpGq.png
    http://i.imgur.com/CZxIQXN.png
it mostly appeared in davinci when i did heavy grading and the machine became hot. but with premiere now is ridicoulus..as you know as a director/editor i have to deliver on point..but with export results like these it is now always possible...
so i  researched the internet for that problem, and many others where facing that too. they said it is especially a problem with the d700's. and only a complete hardware swap (only the gpu's of course) had solve their problems. i went to the apple store, told the guy my problem and also the internet research that only hardware swap will help. so he ordered the ne d700's that the technician can put them in. next day the technician told me this problem cannot be the gpu's as they did their special-hyper-super-hardware tests and there was no problem with the gpu's..so i got my MacPro back without any changes etc.
he told me i should update davinci resolve..but now the problem appears in premiereCC too..
maybe some of you guys know what to do? this machine costs a **** of money, and it should guarantee to run stable...
    best

    Discussing the bigger issues:
So far, all we know for sure is that some users seem to have a problem with these specific packages on certain Mac Pro late 2013s (but not on Apple Final Cut Pro-X). Maybe its is just my diagnostics background, but I think this problem smacks of a Hardware problem or a design problem (possibly a graphics chip to display RAM problem) that is particularly vicious at higher temperature operation, such as after graphics-computing for hours.
I also find it very telling that the original design by AMD featured Error-correcting RAM, and that the final design for Apple did not include that. [Did AMD see problems in developing this chip that caused them to use Error-correcting RAM initially? It makes me wonder if the chip-to-RAM margins are cut too close, and that some parts of some chips are not quite fast enough for some RAMs under high-heat conditions.]
It appears from this anecdote, "we won't change your graphics cards because our diagnostic says they're fine"  that Apple has produced a better diagnostic, and essentially turned it back to the software Vendors saying "our Hardware works, now what is your problem?"
It is shameful that neither the software vendors nor Apple have SOLVED this problem, but it seems to me that the onus should now be on the software vendors to provide resources and work with Apple and press for a definitive diagnosis and solution on this problem. I think there really is a problem in some of these Macs.
    Practical considerations:
I suggest you use something like SMC fan control to boost the base fan speed before setting out on a complex graphics job and see if it does any better.

  • I just purchased a new MacPro to replace my existing 2006 MacPro which cannot be undated with the new operating system.  My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro or 2)

I just purchased a new MacPro 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor to replace my existing 2006 MacPro 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon because it cannot be undated with the new Lion operating system.
My question is what is the safest way to transfer all my files to the new computer.  1) simply install my existing 2TB HD into the new Mac Pro, set it as the startup drive, and update its10.7  operating system or 2) or use the migration program.
I'm concerned that simply installing the existing 2TB HD, I may have issues with it not recognising some infromation written for the old 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon.

your new system runs 10.6.8 just fine as has been said and stated many times.
    I would clone it first.
I would even clone the original system it has.
And if you have or want to use Lion and then Mountain Lion, fine - I would still keep backups of every OS.
I am not a fan of putting the OS and Apps plus all the data all on one drive. I like to keep them separate.
Whatever OS, rerun the last combo update is all and any other updates.
And by "new Lion" I assume you don't mean 10.7 but "Moutain" 10.8.  Part of me says keep Lion and SL around, and test and try out ML with your apps and other hardware you may have. After too many years, waiting for 10.8.1 - and give everyone time to update their apps and retest.

  • Mail rules not copied to new MacPro via iCloud

    Hi All,
I have a new MacPro that is replacing an older MacPro that was running Mavericks 10.9.5.  I also have a Macbook Air running Mavericks 10.9.5.
For a host of reasons, I decided not to simply use Migration Assistant on this new MacPro, but to copy individual plist files for apps such as Mail.  The two plists that I was interested in recreating on this new setup were the MessageRules plist and the SmartFolders plist.  Interestingly these two kinds of preferences seem to be shared across MacOS devices via iCloud.
However, in both instances (iCloud syncing or manually copying over the old plist file), I cannot get my install of Apple Mail to read the plists.  Nor are the shared preferences shared with this computer.  Apple tech support was not much help saying their hands are tied because of Apple Engineering.  Never heard that one before.
Thanks in advance to whomever can spare me from having to manually recreate a hundred or so rules and 20 or so smart mailboxes.

The messages coming to mail app. on my iMac & macbook pro were not showing up on my 5 devices if the sender had a "move to" a folder command on the 'rules' in Mail 'Preferences'.
After trying every suggestion I could find on this forum in addition to some of my own, I realized the only thing that worked was my changing the "move to" command  to "copy to" command. This work around resulted in duplicating all the emails, one in the "inbox" and the "copied" one to it's proper folder ! When I proceeded to delete the emails from the "inbox" as I had set up the "copy to" rule and they were all in their proper folders. I came across another change to the mail system after iOS 8.1 ; if one deletes the emails in the "inbox" on the mac they get deleted across the board from all your devices and vice versa !! I was on telephone with Apple "Senior" techs for 2 frustrating days and eventually they said there is nothing they can do, it had been changed by the "Engineers", something to do with changing "pop" to "imap" protocol. Now I have to put up with all my email being in the inbox  with no option to organize them or delete them if I want them to appear on my devices. This is outrageous !!

  • My iPhone 4s iOS 7.0.4 will not update music or apps from iTunes 11.1.3.  this was true of my pc and the new MacPro.

My iphone 4s ios 7/0/4 will not update music or apps from itunes 11.1.3.  this was true with my pc since ios 7.0.3 even with update 7.0.4 and now continues with my new MacPro also runing itunes 11.1.3.   as most state in previous threads, syncs all non itunes related data with no issue and appears to work correctly on itunes data but then hangs on the last step of updating until it times out.  i have tried marking specific music to transfer, setting up new playlist, deleting some old playlist on phone but stopped short of restoring my phone back to new due to the amount of non itunes data that i will lose.  The itunes setup on the macpro was completely with the download of all music from a previous external backup and the creation of new playlist - on the first sync with existing phone it did ask to overwrite all phone itunes data with macpro itunes data which i did accept - no different result - no changes on phone.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • Has anyone in this Forum had problems with installing and running Adobe apps on the new MacPro?

Has anyone in this Forum had problems with installing and running Adobe apps on the new MacPro?
I have been trying to install Photoshop CS6 & CC and Acrobat Pro XI on my Mac Pro (late 2013). I keep getting a 'configuration' error message and wondered if the problem was wide spread.

Good to hear someone has had success. The lack of it here is frustrating and depressing.

  • Acrylic 20" Cinema Display with new MacPro

As I read the posts here, to use the old cinema display with an ADC connector I will need to buy Apple DVI to ADC adapter to connect my 20" cinema display with ADC to the new MacPro?
This new DVI to ADC adapter provides power for the cinema display as I understand which is why it's so expensive whereas when cinema display was connected to my Powermac G5 the power came thru the ADC connection?
    Is this correct?

I am trying to install my downloaded flash player on my new MacPro hard drive.  I get the continual message that my I.D. and password are wrong.  I know they are not wrong and have tried a lot of combinations from old Macs and old passwords too.  Nothing works.  How can I get the job done?

    Hi,
On Mac, this password prompt is presented by your operating system, and is intended to keep you from accidentally installing software which can harm your system. Flash Player does not throw this prompt, Apple does that.
Please provide machine credentials of currently logged in User to continue with the installation.

  • Existing Windows network and a new MacPro?

I am currently running a home network as follows:
2 ea. Dell PCs running XP Pro, ethernet wire connected to a LinkSys cable modem/router, connected to Comcast for internet access. I also have an HP color laserjet 3500 printer hardwire connected to the LinkSys as part of the network. I have external hard drives on each PC connected to USB ports on the PCs but made available for accessing to either PC for storage and/or retrieval. I run MS Office 2003 on each PC and use Outlook for my email on each PC.
I am contemplating replacing the older PC with a new MacPro and have the following questions:
    1. Will I simply remove the old PC from the network and connect (ethernet cable) the new MacPro to the LinkSys cable modem/router? Will I have internet access at this point oon my new MacPro or will I have to do something else (configure the MacPro or whatever) to gain this internet access?
    2. Will the new MacPro see the networked HP printer and will I be able to print to that printer thru the network from my MacPro? Any special software needed on my MacPro to print to that printer?
    3. I assume that it is possible to physically connect my current external hard drives to the new MacPro thru a USB connection, but will the MacPro see the files on these ext drives and can I access them?
    4. I plan on installing MS Office on the MacPro. If I create a file (Word, Xcel or PowerPoint document) and email it to a non-believer (PC-user) will they be able to open and use the file, assuming they are running MS Office 2003 on their PC?
    5. I understand that I can install up to four hard drives on the MacPro, all internal. Is there any advantage to using two internal hard drives to provide back up capability as opposed to using one internal hard drive and then buying a separate external MacPro compatible hard drive for my backup? That is - should I go with two internal hard drives or one internal and one external - thinking that if something bad powerwise should happen to the MacPro maybe the ext hard drive would have been spared. (I do have surge protectors on all of my equipment.) I assume that I would NOT be able to access files from the Mac ext hard drive from my other PC. Is that a good assumption?
    6. I understand that I can download BootCamp and run Windows programs on my MacPro. Can I run BootCamp and MacOS concurrently? Can I run BootCamp and MS Office for Windows on my MacPro, prepare a PowerPoint presentation, store it on my MacPro hard drive, then run Mac OS X, PowerPoint (MS Office for the Mac) and open the recently created PowerPoint file that I had created under BootCamp, MS Office for Windows? Can I go back and forth between the two operating systems creating files, opening and storing them? Or is this all a moot point in that any MS Office for Mac file creeated on the MacPro will be fully compatible with any PC system should I email them the file and I don't even have to worry about BootCamp?
    7. I understand that Apple will release their new operating system, Leopard, next spring 2007. Should I wait to buy a MacPro until that new OS is on the market? If I did buy the MacPro now, is it a big deal to upgrade the MacPro to new OS?
Thanx in advance for any advice you can give me.
    Harry
    PC   Windows XP Pro

    1. Should work as soon as you plug in the network cable.
2 Just install the drivers and setup the printer
    3. Yes. Macs can connect to Windows file shares.
    4. Yes. Office files are Office files, no matter the platform.
    5. "I assume that I would NOT be able to access files from the Mac ext hard drive from my other PC."
Use SharePoints fro hornware.com to share the drives to your PC.
"That is - should I go with two internal hard drives or one internal and one external"
How you want to configure your backup scheme is up to you, as your computing needs are different than ours. Internal drives are cheaper, while external drives are portable.
    6. "Can I run BootCamp and MacOS concurrently? "
No. If you want to run Windows and OS X at the same time, use Parallels.
"Or is this all a moot point in that any MS Office for Mac file creeated on the MacPro will be fully compatible with any PC system"
    Yes.
    7. "Should I wait to buy a MacPro until that new OS is on the market?"
Your call. We can't make that decision for you.
"is it a big deal to upgrade the MacPro to new OS?"
    No.

  • Can anyone help?? Another new MacPro thread....

    Hi all.
Another person here having big issues with PP CC 2014 on the new MacPro..
    A little background;
I've been having issues with PP for years. Previously I was a photographer, and Lightroom was my software of choice. That was a great Adobe experience, pretty faultless software really...
Then when I moved to video it was a different story... obviously it's a whole different ballgame dealing with video files, I've not had much luck with my editing workflow!
I was working off an underpowered PC first, then was on a few Macbook Pros. Eventually, I got the go ahead to get a new MacPro from my employer, I thought that would solve all my problems! How wrong I was!
Even after the apparent "fix" for the GPU issues, I'm still having problems...
I'm no Adobe basher....No one wants PP to work well more than me (Al Mooney got highly offended on Twitter after I suggested PP might be slightly less than perfect!)
I'm hoping I might get some tips to improve performance or even a fix for the issues I'm having.
    Here's the gist of my specs, can give more if needed;
    Yosemite 10.10.2 (14C109)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
    3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1866 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    My main drive is a G RAID 8GB TB2
    So,
My main issue is that when a sequence gets more complex, the performance dips massively, to the point where it's unusable and crashes constantly.
The timeline freezes, the playhead is laggy, the system gets really slow to respond in general..... Maybe 15 seconds for the keyboard to respond to keypresses. (or else I need to tap spacebar twice instead of once to get it to respond). If I try to make any change on the timeline that anything more than a simple delete etc, the system can freeze and I need to force quit.
Another symptom is that when quitting the program, often it doesn't quit properly and I need to force quit.
The sequences I'm working on don't seem that demanding (especially give the machine I have) so it's really confusing as to what the issue is.
We're talking videos usually in the 2 -5 minutes range. Maybe 4 video layers. Footage wise; generally 1080p XAVC from a Sony F5, some Canon 4K from a 1DC. Can PP really handle native footage, should I be transcoding??? One of the big benefits of PP is the apparent ability to handle native formats, so it's really disappointing if that's the issue....
I do use a reasonable amount of plugins, like Izotope for denoising dialogue, the dreaded Red Giant plugins, and occasionally Red Giant Denoiser (is this the root of my problems??!). My current project has two layers keyed interviews (2 angles) and I'm using Ultrakey for that. (I bought Red Giant Primatte Keyer, but my system isn't powerful enough to run it without major issues....ridiculous!!)
If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. I've read other threads but my issue seems different. I can't rule out that I'm making some obvious mistake in my workflow either... so any general workflow best practise tips in that regard would be good too.
Sorry for the long thread and thanks for reading.

    Hi healyb2,
    Sorry you're experiencing this issue.
I think I've identified one of the issues, Izotope 4 Dialogue Denoiser.....
I've disabled it on an existing sequence and the crashes have stopped (for now).
Let us know if these issues crop up again. You can let us know directly here: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug
So, possibly (like Red Giant) Izotope plugins may not work usably in Premiere Pro....... which really grinds my gears......
Actually, we work hand in hand with plug-ins developers in the realm of compatibility. Some of these plug-ins companies are quite small so you have to pay close attention to precisely what is supported for the host application. In some cases, it takes some time to catch up to the latest versions.
why are Adobe not calling out the plugins as not usable? What about the plugin manufacturers themselves? I can't see this being a performance issue on my end...frustrating!
That's actually up to the plug-ins manufacturers. Please communicate with them accordingly regarding compatibility. Sorry for any confusion this may have brought about.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Bye,

You dont have to do anything. I gave you a potential suggestion to one solution.
Contact MSI technical and ask them. If the card is under guarantee, they may ask you to send it in and you will probably get a refurbished card.
Your choice to weigh up the costs of sending the card in for repair, buying a new card or considering an aftermarket cooler.
