New major release, JE 5.0, is available

Hi all,
We're pleased to announce a new major release, JE 5.0.34. The release contains a significant number of new features and performance enhancements. Complete information can be found in the JE documentation, specifically in the change log. The release is available via the download site or Maven.
Below is a copy of the major enhancements listed in the release notes. See the change log for a complete list.
<li> The new DiskOrderedCursor class can be used to iterate over all records in a database, for increased performance when transactional guarantees are not required. [#15260]
<li> A new Environment.preload method can be used to preload multiple databases at a time, for increased performance compared to preloading each database individually. [#18153]
<li> The JE environment can now be spread across multiple subdirectories to take advantage of multiple disks or file systems. [#19125]
<li> The new AppStateMonitor class lets the HA application add more application specific information to the notion of node state in a replication group. [#18046]
<li> New options have been added for changing the host of a JE replication node, and for moving a JE replication group. See the Utilities section of the change log.
<li> Replicated nodes can now be opened in UNKNOWN state, to support read only operations in a replicated system when a master is not available. [#19338]
<li> New Cursor methods were added to allow quickly skipping over a specified number of key/value pairs. [#19165]
<li> A per-Environment ClassLoader may now be configured and will be used by JE for loading all user-supplied classes. [#18368]
<li> The java.io.Closeable interface is now implemented by all JE classes and interfaces with a public void close() method. This allows using these objects with the Java 1.7 try-with-resources statement. [#20559]
<li> The Environment.flushLog method has been added. It can be used to make durable, by writing to the log, all preceding non-transactional write operations, without performing a checkpoint. [#19111]
<li> Performance of record update and deletion operations has been significantly improved when the record is not in the JE cache and the application does not need to read the record prior to performing the update or deletion. [#18633]
<li> An internal format change was made for databases with duplicate keys that improves operation performance, reduces memory and disk overhead, and increases concurrency. [#19165]
<li> An improvement has been made that requires significantly less writing per checkpoint, less writing during eviction, and less metadata overhead in the JE on-disk log files. [#19671]
<li> Improved DbCacheSize utility to take into account memory management enhancements and improve accuracy. Added support for key prefixing, databases configured for sorted duplicates, and replicated environments. [#20145]
<li> EnvironmentConfig.TREE_COMPACT_MAX_KEY_LENGTH was added for user configuration of the in-memory compaction of keys in the Btree. [#20120]
-- The JE Team

The format change is for BDB Java Edition 5.0 only, and does not apply to other BDB products. It's forward compatible, which means that a BDB JE application using JE 5.0 can use environments written with older versions of JE. However, it's not backwards compatible; once your environment has been opened by JE 5.0, it's been converted to the new format, and can no longer be readable by older versions of JE.
Just for the benefit of others who may not have read the changelog, here's the full text:
JE 5.0.34 has moved to on-disk file format 8.
The change is forward compatible in that JE files created with release 4.1 and earlier can be read when opened with JE 5.0.34. The change is not backward compatible in that files created with JE 5.0 cannot be read by earlier releases. Note that if an existing environment is opened read/write, a new log file is written by JE 5.0 and the environment can no longer be read by earlier releases.
There are two important notes about the file format change.
The file format change enabled significant improvements in the operation performance, memory and disk footprint, and concurrency of databases with duplicate keys. Environments which contain databases with duplicate keys must run an upgrade utility before opening an environment with this release. See the Performance section for more information.
An application which uses JE replication may not upgrade directly from JE 4.0 to JE 5.0. Instead, the upgrade must be done from JE 4.0 to JE 4.1 and then to JE 5.0. Applications already at JE 4.1 are not affected. Upgrade guidance can be found in the new chapter, "Upgrading a JE Replication Group", in the "Getting Started with BDB JE High Availability" guide.I may not have fully understood your question, so let us know if that doesn't answer it.

  • NEW iTUNES RELEASE 7.5.0.20 AVAILABLE

    I was somewhat surprised with the RonAnnArbor semi-formal OP announcement in this thread that there was a new version of iTunes.
    Of course had I been looking at the Download section of Apple.Com I may have picked it up. Unfortunately, I do not spend a great deal of time looking for the latest download from Apple.
    Had it not been for Ron's subsequent posting in the exact same thread that there was a download, I would not have picked it up through the initial statement that 7.5 was faster.
    This is not the way to formally announce an update, regardless of what the update may contain.
    There isn't even a posting on the first page by Apple or the Apple Moderators/Facilitators.
    This is not the way to run the railroad.

    I for one must have seen 7 announcements by 1pm Mountain Time in my RSS feeds for Apple and PC related technologies. The word does tend to get around quick. My Software Updates would have found it tonight if I hadn't "told my Mac myself".
    The railroad is running pretty fine me thinks. Also, this is not an earthshakingly critical update for us Americanos.

    Are Panini & Burrito going to be a major dot release for the current Catalyst and Flash Builder, or are these going to be a new major release?
    Or does anyone know?

    Flash Catalyst 1.5 and Flash Builder 4.5 are the public names as of now. Release Dates are still not publicly known. Although they are going from .0 to .5, I would consider them both major updates (especially Catalyst)

  • ANN: New XDK release for 9.0.2B and 9.0.1.1.0A available

    New XDK Releases for 9.0.2B Beta Version and 9.0.1.1.0A Procudtion Version are online at:
    http://technet.oracle.com/tech/xml/xdkhome.html
    What's new:
    - Oracle9i XDK for C and C++ released on Linux
    - Oracle TransX Utility Aids loading data and text.These release is part of the XDK for Java 9.0.2 Beta.
    - Oracle SOAP APIs added to the XDK for Java
    Support for the SOAP services have been added to the XDK for Java 9.0.1.1.0A Production.
    - XML Schema Processor for Java supports both LAX Mode and STRICT Mode Validation
    The XML Schema Processor for Java now supports both LAX Mode and STRICT
    Mode Validation. Compared with STRICT Mode where every element from the root on down is required to be defined and validated, LAX Mode Schema validation provides developers the ability to limit the XML Schema
    validation to the subsections of the XML document.
    This will simplify XML Schema definitions and the validation process by skipping the ignorable content. Furthermore, with LAX mode, developers can divide their XML documents into small fragments and carry out the XML Schema validation in a parallel or progressive way. This results, in a much more flexible and productive schema validation process.
    - SAX2 Extension support in the Java XML Parser
    The XML Parser for Java now supports two new handlers - LexicalHandler and DeclHandler.
    XML documents now can be parsed through Oracle XML Parser SAX APIs with full access
    to the DTD declarations and the lexical items like comments and CDATA sections.
    This ensures that the complete content model is preserved.
    - JAXP 1.1 supports is now added to the XDK for Java
    - New Differ Bean in the XDK for JavaBeans
    A new bean has been added the the JavaBean XDK which analyses the differences between to XML documents and outputs the XSL sytlesheet that will convert one into the
    other. This is extremely useful when converting an XML document retrieved from a SQL query into an xHTML page on the web.
    Stylesheets can now be automaticly created for use in XSQL pages.
    - XML Compression now supported in the Java XML Parser
    Now developers can take advantage of a compressed XML stream when serializing their DOM and SAX outputs. This new functionality significantly reduces the size without losing any information. Both DOM and SAX compressed streams are fully compatible and the SAX stream can be used to generate a
    corresponding DOM tree. These compressed streams can also be stored in Oracle as a CLOB for efficient storage and retrieval.

    bump up for east cost.

  • Migration of Open Tasks when BPM Processes Change during major releases

    Hi
    This is the most often scenario faced by many project teams during Go-Lives of BPM Processes.
    We would like to migrate BPM tasks from older BPM processes to newer BPM process. And there is substantial changes done between two releases.
    Though I am aware that older BPM tasks created get suspended, is there way to do the following:
    1. Use any migration tools to migrate old BPM tasks to newer BPM task
    2. Simultaneously have both Older and Newer BPM Processes run in Environment, let them co-exist till the old BPM tasks get completed
    What is the recommended approach for these kind of situations, when its not possible to either of the above activities.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Srikant

    Hi Srikant,
    we were facing the same issues.  We have a solution for this, but it has some prerequisites to make it work.  I actually talked about it at the DSAG (German SAP User Group) conference (see blog) and promised the audience to blog about it in more detail, but haven’t yet found the time to do so.
    First very important is to understand how the life cycle works.  There are two very important documents to read:
    SAP Note 1865683
    SCN Artikel Understanding Business Process Lifecycle Management Features of SAP NetWeaver BPM
    With complex processes and major changes, it is very complex to maintain multiple versions.  If you read through the above mentioned documents that becomes very clear.  Also there are other complexities, for example code reuse, data, support desk issues or user training.  There are also some restrictions running multiple versions of the same process (SAP Note 1865683)
    So here is in short what we did.
    We keep all our process data outside the process context in a database including the state, i.e. the current process step.  When we deploy a new major version, we cancel all running process instances and then restart them with the new process model.  To restart processes we use the SAP scheduler which starts a process if a specific status value is found.
    If you don’t have your process data easily available you could use the process export function in the NWA.  The export is an XML file that you could possible parse, but I haven't actually tried this method.
    In the process model we have an exclusive choice gateway where can import a process to specific process step.  This happens right at start of the process.  The gateway evaluates the status value mentioned above to decide where to go.
    I hope to find the time to write the blog soon.  Here I could give you a complete example how we do the reimport of processes.
    I’m also very interested in other ways to achieve this, so this should be an interesting discussion.
    Regards
    Detlev

  • I like the new rapid release, but I don't like how it's done.

    Hello Firefox users.
    I have a suggestion for your rapid release program. Ever since Firefox 2, I have been a loyal fan. Each update had a meaning and a purpose.
    Ever since Firefox 5, each update makes slight improvements to technologies that aren't even used by the majority of the web. I'm not criticizing the updates you give, but instead how they are delivered.
    Since Firefox 5, every 6~ weeks, a new firefox is released with a new version number. They offer little new.
    My suggestion is to stop increasing the main version number.
    When you go to your Firefox version, it says Firefox 7.0.1. At the this rate, the second digit of the firefox version will likely NEVER be used. How can they give a decent update in less than 6 weeks? That wont happen, they will include it in the next release.
    Instead I propose a slightly revised plan. Instead of increasing the main version number, increase the second version number.
    For example;
    Firefox 8 is coming out very soon, instead of releasing it as Firefox 8, instead release it as 7.1. Firefox 9 can be released as 7.2. Firefox 10 can be released as 7.3, and etc.
    Based on the old plan (before rapid release) a MAJOR update would be released very rarely. Example:
    Firefox 2.0 released October 24th, 2006
    Firefox 3.0 released June 17, 2008
    That's about '''1 3/4 years later'''! In that same time span, Firefox will have increased 15 version numbers! That means '''we will be at version 22 in 1 3/4 years'''!
    I am in no way suggesting reverting. The new rapid release helps get new technologies out there.
    Here is my plan:
    * Firefox 7.1 (8) Week #6
    * Firefox 7.2 (9) Week #12
    * Firefox 7.3 (10) Week #18
    * Firefox 7.4 (11) Week #24
    * Firefox 7.5 (12) Week #30
    * Firefox 7.6 (13) Week #36
    * Firefox 7.7 (14) Week #42
    * Firefox 7.8 (15) Week #48
    * '''Firefox 8.0 (16) Week #54'''
    The six week plan with incremental updates will give us Version 8 on Week 54, almost one year after Version 7. This will allow for technologies to be released without undermining the huge progress that was made from version Firefox 1.0 - 4.0.
    This will stop the large amount of complaints that Firefox has been receiving.
    The rapid release that Chrome uses works well because they started with it, and they are used to it.
    I hope Firefox will consider this plan instead of the old one. I cannot see any flaws in it, but if you can, '''please''' point them out, as I would like to either rebuttal them, or agree with them.

    They do, just may not seem to be as obvious or as big as the the Firefox 4.0 release was in abundance of features.

  • What are the major release version numbers and what versions are not considered major releases?

    I manage a QA team that tests websites in all major browsers. I need to know what versions of Firefox are considered major releases and which versions are just incremental or minor updates. With new versions being released almost every month, I can't afford to test on the latest 6 versions for my projects, so I need to make an educated decision as to what the major releases are and determine this on a regular basis.

    The ESR is a Extended Support Release channel (meant more for Enterprise users in mind) where it is currently 17.0.3esr (released when 19.0 was) and will only get allowed security and stability updates until oh some twelve weeks after 24.0 release where a new ESR version will be based on 24.0 release as 24.0esr.
    X.0.*
    X is the Major release while the * are the chemspill updates if it was deemed important (Usually for security or a crash/regression issue for example) and cannot wait for the next release. These Major versions are released without intending to have updates as for example the Firefox 11.0 and 12.0 releases never had updates.
    Firefox 10.0 was released on [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/10.0/releasenotes/ January 31, 2012] and Firefox 19.0 was released on [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/19.0/releasenotes/ February 19, 2013]. The releases are about six weeks except for the short delay of 18.0 due to holidays.

  • N80 new firmware release date and wishlist

    It has been no update on firmware since the latest release V.5.0719.0.2 for N80 since 24 May 2007. With so many models rolling out and firmware revision released for other new and old models, one might wonder if N80 is being forgotten and the firmware revision is put on-hold forever in cold storage?!
    There has been so much discussion on the expectation for last firmware release but what we get is only product stability without signficant boost of functionality and performance. I believe this has made many proud owner of N80 phone waiting with a long neck.
    After reading through the forum, I have summarised some of the common expectation on the next release (hopefully) in a wishlist below. All is welcome to provide input on the improvement they expect in next firmware release. It is also hope that any status of firmware upgrade for N80 news to be shared here.
    The N80 new firmware wishlist
    i) AD2P bluetooth profile support
    ii) Nokia Maps application support (currently, N80 is not support model for Nokia Maps application)
    iii)Enhanced digital music player (similar with N73 ME with album art browsing)
    iv) Music file IDD tag editing (change artist, song title, genre information)
    v) Video ringtone
    vi) Skype VOIP support
    vii)Mymobilesite.net intergration for seamless moblogging interface
    viii)Auto birthday reminder storing from Contact entry
    Thats all I can think of for now.

    Hi Jacob,
    Thanks for your quick response but if you go to the download section of Nokia Maps, N80 is not listed for selection on Nokia Maps setup file download. It is obvious that the compability page does show N80 is supported but which setup version to choose? I myself have Nokia Maps installed previously. But I believe there are new feature and interface in the latest version of Nokia Maps.
    Yes, mymobilesite.net is available for N80, but perhaps the new firmware can include it in the new firmware release to save other the hassle to install
    something to add:
    ix) HSDPA mobile internet surfing speed (3.5G?)

  • New patch releases: JE 5.0.48 and 4.1.20

    All,
    Please note that new patch releases for JE 5.0 and 4.1 are now available.
    The JE 5.0.48 update contains a number of critical bug fixes that can cause corruption (data loss) under certain circumstances. We strongly recommend that anyone using JE 5 upgrade immediately to 5.0.48. This update also contains fixes for issues that prevent upgrading to JE 5 from an earlier release, or cause problems after upgrading.
    Note that running the pre-upgrade utility is mandatory before upgrading to JE 5 from an earlier release, and the pre-upgrade utility must be run using JE 4.0.20. The JE 4.0.20 update contains fixes to the pre-upgrade utility as well as one critical bug fix. See the first section in the JE 5.0.48 change log for detailed information on upgrading and running the pre-upgrade utility.
    We'd like to thank all the users who reported problems and especially those who worked with us over email, in some cases for long periods of time, to diagnose problems and test fixes. Some, but not all, of those who helped are mentioned in the change log. Thank you for contributing to the reliability of the product!
    Complete information can be found in the JE documentation. The release is available via the download site or Maven.

    Hi,
    the biggest problem is that we are using bought application not made in our company. I have tried out this java application with JRE 1.4 and 1.5 and it just doesn't work. So the only solution is using JRE 1.3 on all intranet computers. This application uses digital certificate so why doesn't Sun allow digital signet java programs to run on older versions of JRE?
    There could also be one more solution. I exactly know md5sum (or sha1sum) of 3 JAR files used by applet needing JRE 1.3. So if this sum would be enabled manualy (or I could send batch file to make this in registry or any other storage this would be good).

    Guys,
    The version of SGD available for download from the Sun download site has been refreshed to 4.20.959.
    http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=43321db9
    This is a bug fix release.

    I just uninstalled/reinstalled sgd on a secondary solaris x86 server and tried to add it again to the array, but the primary complains that the secondary's software is newer and won't add it. My array is already configured and I don't want to lose these configs. Any suggestions on how to apply this new bugfix release without blowing away my array?

    Love the app, the UI is very nice; however, I'm a dropbox user and while I can browse all the files in dropbox, I cannot open any of them which makes the app unusable for me.  Is there a fix planned for this?
    Also, are there any plans to add view options in future (I.e. List View, icon, filmstrip, etc)?
    Thanks for your consideration.
