New MB experience :-)

I saw the new MacBook announcement and called the local Apple store which happened to have some in stock. So I ran down at lunch and picked one up. I am a long time mac user, starting in the 68k days. I have a 15" MB PRO that was one of the W8609 serial numbers. It just got back from Apple after having the logic board replaced to quiet the whine. In the interim I bought a 17" MB PRO but immediately sold it becuase it was both too big and had some display quality issues that concerned me. My daughter has a 12" iBook G4, so I am familiar with it as well.
So now, here I am on a MB, at roughly 1/2 the price. I've been using it for a couple of hours. My observations:
The screen is excellent. It is useless in direct sunlight, but I don't use the computer in direct sunlight so that doesn't concern me. It is much better than the iBook.
The keyboard is very different than both the iBook and MB PRO. I like it, but that is totally subjective. It is a bit noisy, but I am a pounder.
There is no latch, that is very cool, and in my experience is the most frequent think to break on the iBook/Powerbook.
The trackpad is big and works well.
It doesn't make any serious whine, just like the MBP17 and good MBP15. I've been running linux in a Parallels VM for about an hour and the heat isn't bad. It is different than the MBP. First, the surface temperature is better. This is likely because they don't consider the poly a heatsink like the aluminum is. But the bad news is the fan runs more often and makes some more serious fan sounds than the 15 & 17 do. Very subjective, but right now I think I prefer the fan running to the Aluminum sizzle. I am wearing shorts with the MacBook in my lap and I don't find it uncomfortable.
I have a dell 24" LCD and I plugged it into the MB using a miniDVI-DVI adapter and it ran the dell at 1920x1200 with no issues in dual monitor mode. I am not a gamer, so I like the GMA950 graphics because they are cooler and use less power. Hence the longer battery life on the MacBook.
The magsafe adapter is smaller than the PROs.
I immediately added a GB of RAM, removing one of the 256MB dimms and replacing it with a 1GB dimm for a total of 1.25. The memory access is via the battery compartment and was quite easy.
The bottom line: It's a screaming deal. You get a lot of computer for a little money and it runs the world's greatest laptop OS.
If you don't like the occasional whir of a fan, and like a cooking utensil, buy the pro. But seriously, the pro is all about the display and graphics controller, plus the ability to get a 7200RPM drive. If you like the MB form factor, 1280x800 is good enough, and like polycarb, then go for it.
MB PRO 15.4, MB (white 2.0)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You say you have seen the old iBook, have you been
able to see them side by side, my iBook colour is a
bit washed out for me (when next to my 17" and my 20"
CinemaDisplay) would you say the MacBook is a better
quality display than the iBook?
I have not seen them side by side, my daughter is at school. I can tell you without seeing them side by side that the macbook is much better. The color is great. I know what you mean by 'washed out' on the ibook.
In a darker room do you get reflections on the screen
if your in front of it?, I dont mind reflection if
I'm off to one side.
The reflections aren't there straight on. The viewing angle of the display isn't as good as the PROs and the reflections are worse from an angle. You wouldn't want a light behind you in a dark room.
How is that keybaoad, it looks odd to type on?
It's noisy, but I love the way it feels. I am a IBM thinkpad keyboard fanatic, and this is not dissappointing in comparison. That said, keyboards are very subjective.
When just working away and after a full battery
charge, what it the battery remain time saying? Apple
are not saying the run times.
I'm still charging. I'll post something in about 20 minutes on what the display indicates with a full charge. I wouldn't put much in those numbers though.
On the MacBook can you set the CPU speed in energy
saver like on my iBook, or is that just a thing of
the past now?
No CPU speed, just battery saver, normal, and better performance.

  • "New Xbox Experience" (NXE) - Rolling My Own

    Greetings!
I am attempting to create a true 3d corporation friendly graphical user interface.
Microsoft XBOX' 360's '"New Xbox Experience" (NXE)' user interface is very similar to what I am trying to develop..
Can anyone put me in touch with the original developers of the interface?  I am having a dickens of a time trying to duplicate something I thought was pretty basic: drawing a perfect 3d sphere leveraging any known maths...
Here's the problem in a nutshell: On this screen:
The "Avatars' are standing on what at first glance appears to be a flat surface. But on closer inspection, it's actually a rounded surface... Here:
Now this flat rounded surface works out magnificently to seamless transition between selections, as the 3d 'camera' simply shifts position as the entire UI was preloaded.
I have tried duplicating this. And the problem is simple: Jaggies. Here's a relatively simple sphere I created in XNA which has quite a few vertices to it pretty spherical - but even at this angle - you can still see the cross hatching.
And enlarge a section and you can somewhat see the problem:
The problem is: You can see the 'polygon lines' which draw the outside circumference of the circle.
Now I could clearly convert my model to a flat surface, but my goal is to use my 3d code to model spherical planets (in a game) and allow high resolution zoom ins. Polygons would make it appear totally unrealistic.
In any case. First and foremost, I would like to achieve the same effect that Microsoft achieved with the XBOX 360 NXE UI.
And that is, simple rotation on a highly magnified spherical surface without 'bumps' and have it be high performance and at least have a light source. Having it be texture mapped would be a huge bonus.
Does anyone have any idea how to achieve this in XNA, or DirectX9? My target is Windows XP (my OS).
If not. Does anyone know who originally developed this user interface? Maybe they could shed some light on how they achieved this pretty cool effect!

    Hi flyerbri,
Actaully this forum is to dicuss the VS IDE usage, based on your description, this issue is related to the Xbox Game development, am I right?
As far as I know, it has his own supported forum. So it possible, maybe this forum would be better for you here:

  • My new laptop experience

    Hello Everybody,
Every time that I buy a present for myself, I like to share the experience with others.
Since non of my friends understand much about Computers, and my new notebook experiences NEEDED to be shared, i have decided to post it in here:p.
Before Reading: I am not an English native speaker and i am not very into technology, if I had made some mistake please try to understand.
For my birthday I wanted a new computer, since I needed a Windows laptop to work in some projects with my classmates. I had to get the notebook from the USA since it was already sold out in Taiwan. After using it for a couple of weeks it still surprises me. AND GOOD SURPRISES!! Not the usual disappointments that I get with IT products.
    My two Laptops
Coming from a MacBook Pro 13” it took me several days to get used to Windows 8. A bit stressing at first, but now I enjoy the GS70 a bit more everyday:).
    First impression
    Bigger screen:
I was looking for a 17” laptop so it would be more practical to do my reports. And the mate coating allows me to see my photographs without reflections.
    Clean palm rest
The GS70 only comes with 2 stickers on the palm rest, the 2 years warranty sticker, that will be taken out along with the plastic cover, and the Intel Inside Core i7 sticker, that won’t bother you since is small and black (which combines with the laptop design).
If you are concerned, you can find the rest of the sticker at the bottom side of the laptops.
    Speaker test
I have always enjoyed listening to music; beside the two speakers the GS70 also comes with a woofer at the bottom, which delivers a better sound experience than the MacBook.
    SteelSeries Keyboard
I have saw SteelSeries Keyboards in Europe, as my understanding is a very well-known brand for gamers because of its quality. Never had the opportunity to try them, to be sincere it does not disappoint you, feels like an external mechanical keyboard and you can configure the backlight colors easily as your convenience or mood.
It has a wide range of color to select, and three independent areas to setup.
    Thin and Light
The notebook is extremely thin, about the width of two iPhones. And for a notebook of its size, it weighs only 2 Kilograms.
    User Experience:
    NO EYESTRAIN AT ALL!!!!!
I have always suffered from eye strain while using computers for more than one hour, with the mate coating and bigger screen, I can watch videos, even at outdoors for hours without any eye strain symptom.
    Battery life
In my experience, while doing reports and watching movies, the battery lasted for 3.5 hours, although not as much as with the Macbook, but I get to have a bigger screen and better experience in outdoors.
    Headphones
Is also the first computer that I have that can get the best from my headphones without an amplifier.
    High build in quality
To be different with other computers, the GS70 feels solid with aluminum components. The weight is equilibrated, I can put it on some working machines, without fear that it might fell down.
    Configurable internet priority
At home I rely on the 3G for internet, with limited bandwidth; I can set Skype as a priority and get a smooth conversation while surfing on the internet, and THIS SHOULD BE A MUST for all computers!!
    Playing Metro Last Light
One of my classmate has installed Metro on my computer, I don’t usually play computers game, but the experience is quite addictive, good synchronization of sound and video.
    Finally, the LOOK!
Although it is a “Gaming” computer, it can deliver a professional and stylish look, even more than a Macbook.
    The Open box
Although it is not a Hermes bag, my boyfriend wanted to remember the moment. He hand-carried it from Los Angeles to Taipei
Outbox, not really my first choice, but after all I was interested on the notebook.
    Opening it
    Seal sticker and opening
    Protection bag
Inside there is a dust bag, followed by a plastic bag.
    Wait for it!
Finally there is another dust/scratch protection bag for the screen.
    Hocus Pocus!
    All Accesories
    The Backpack
The backpack that it comes in with is not very girly, but it is very practical for carrying books and computers because of its square shape. And it comes with a protection sleeve for the computer in case you don’t want to use the backpack.
    The Headset
Comes with a hidden microphone, is very practical to talk on the phone with it.
    Best Computer Ever!!
Special Thanks to my dearest Andrea Rossi  for the photos!

  • New user experience with product

I just recently purchased this product and would like to share my experience so far.
Seems all products have a few warts, and we seem to always find them first. But, having used this now for about 2 weeks, I can say that this product was worth the money for me. It gives insight into existing apps that I didn't even know about. Makes working with new apps rather simple. If time is money, I'm now in the black with the amount of time saved.
Having said this, there are a few items I would like to see added.
Would be nice to include a bit of database and hibernate support (kinda like myeclipse)
I would like to see better support for struts-layout. This product sure makes layout easier
Might be there, but would be nice to better CSS suuport

Good post. I agree. I'm experiencing a few bumps as well. It's mostly due to my lack of familiarity with NitroX and trying to get RAD to work as well as WSAD 5.1.2 does. But overall I love NitroX and the 40% of the product abilities that I'm using right now are well worth it. NitroX makes our IDE (WSAD and RAD) much more of a complete tool. I can't wait until I've had a few months with this tool.

  • How can I use the new tablet experience in ICS?

I have a Galaxy Tab upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich and installed Firefox, but it shows normal vertical-mode-oriented user interface.
How can I get the new tablet interface based on your promoted one?

    Hi Cyberkagami,
I noticed in your system details that you're testing out Firefox Nightly (currently version 14.0) and you're in-fact running the latest version. There is presently no tablet oriented interface available on the 'native' version of Firefox for Android as all the mobile developers have been directly focusing on making a great phone experience foremost for the new product. There are plans to create a tablet interface within the near future (there are mockups of the user-interfaces on Bugzilla bugs) time-frame; it is simply just not available yet. Stay tuned.

  • New Mini Experience

Today I unpacked my new Mini (Core Duo, 2G Ram, 100 MB). What a wonderful experience. I will use this thing to run a pretty hefty psychotherapy practice; I've been hauling in the old TiBook for years now, hooking it up daily to a 17" Cinema display. Not having to haul in the TiBook will be a joy.
The setup was a breeze. It asked me to bridge the two Macs with a firewire cable, and in about 90 minutes, the deed was done. Everything tansferred perfectly, and I was back in business. The computer feels quite snappy, for every application that I use, it is absolutely quiet, and the graphics looks super thus far. I've had lots of Macs in my time, but this one was the smoothest to bring on line and get functional in just over an hour. Thanks, Apple. This is just great!

  • Does Captivate content work with the new standard, Experience API (xAPI)?

I have developed SCORM conformant courses, but my current customer-base does not use a Learning Management System (LMS).  The eXperience API (xAPI) tracks user experiences using a Learning Record Store (LRS) rather than an LMS.
According to Adobe marketing, Captivate 8.01 (which I have) publishes content for use with xAPI.  The Captivate help does not include any directions or assistance on xAPI.
Has anyone used Captivate products with xAPI and an LRS?  Can you point me in a direction to find out more information on this??
My fear is that this will require far more programming experience (xAPI is open source) than I have.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

You can publish the Captivate project as xAPI output by going to Edit > Preferences > Quiz > Reporting and selecting TinCan from the Standard dropdown list.
However, Captivate can only track the same elements as that of a SCORM output even with TinCan.

  • Thank you for the new KDE Experience!

Well I think splitting up the packages was the best thing you could do. I switched back from Kdemod (Chakra) here to plain archlinux kde packages and they are wonderful! Now I can install only the packages I want and everything is just working. The chakra-team does good work, but there are not many developers and sometimes they need a lot of time to create new packages and this is bad if archlinux is faster and kdemod blocks my updates form archlinux.

stefan1975 wrote:well i think both [extra] and kdemod work just fine after trying them both for kde4.3 .... but you really think [extra] has more kde devs then kdemod? i think not. the problem with the kdemod upgrade to 4.3 was related to the change in packaging in [extra].
The packages in the 4.2.x series KDEMod on x86_64 often took weeks to get out the door after i686 had been available.  Hopefully those days are over for the KDEMod folks tho'.

  • My new user experience with PP5.5 (not so great)

I just wrote up a very long post and I seem to have trouble posting it -- "Cannot post now" error, even though I can post in the testing forum. This is a short post to see if it works...

    11. Once I had my clips laid down and the video synced up, I started  to think about audio. I had 3 tracks of audio: a mono track from the  G12, and Channel 1 and Channel 2 from the JVC, both of which were  different mics. It turned out that we ended up using Channel 1 from the  JVC everywhere, but that was partly because it was easier to do and I  didn't know what I was doing. It appeared that there was no easy way to  tell Premiere to seperate out the Ch1/Ch2 audio in the sequence where  the clip was laid down, possibly because I had Captured clips with the  wrong audio setting (I didn't specify multichannel -- was it an option?)  Instead, I had to go the the Project Window, select the clip, and  choose Clip > Audio Options > Breakout to Mono. Then that  gave me a pair of independnt left/right clips with just a mono track,  and I could lay those down the timeline, and sync them up manually with  the existing video. This sync was easy since the left edges matched up  1:1, since of course the video and audio were recorded together by the  same camera. Then I had to unlink the original ("stereo") tracks and  delete them. Was there a better way?
    12. The  aforementioned Breakout to Mono function is hard to find! If you select a  clip in the Project window, one of the choices in the context menu  (rightclick) is Modify > Audio Channels. It looks like it  might be the right thing but everything is grayed out and there's no way  to convert stereo to mono. It's particularly confusing that there is a  lot of overlap between that context menu and the menubar Clip menu, but not enough. It seems like there should either be complete  overlap or almost no overlap. But the degree of partial overlap makes it  hard to find things, and hard to remember which menu you found them in.
    13.  Having established four sequences, each with two video tracks and 1  audio track, it was time to do the multi-camera editing. I found the  multi-camera documentation and the whole paradigm somewhat confusing.  That is, it seems weird that I have to lay down both of my clips into a  container sequence (as V1 and V2), and then place that container  sequence into an overarching parent sequence in order to do multicamera  editing. Am I missing something? Why the extra level of indirection? In  addition to being a bit nonintuitive, when I have my final sequence, it  means an extra level of double-clicking (except that doesn't always  work, so sometimes going back to the project window to find the  constituent sequence/clip).
    14. In each of my  lowest-level sequences (that contained the clips directly), I had marked  In and Out points. I was surprised to find that that didn't seem to  affect their placement in the container sequence or the multicam clip  that contained that sequence. I figured I must have done something  obviously wrong, so just ended up trimming those sequences in their  parent sequences. This turned out to be error-prone (left some gaps),  but it got the job done.
    15. The process of multi-cam  editing wasn't really smooth. The interface for recording multicam edits  didn't seem very amenable to adjustment, and it seemed like hitting '1'  or '2' on the keyboard obviated the need to press the Record button,  but not always. And restarting playing/recording sometimes meant that a  duplicate multi-cam edit was recorded, though sometimes multicam edits  were lost. It was confusing, but functional.
    16.  Editing existing multicam edits in the timeline was awkard. I see now  that probably I should have used the ripple edit tool or rolling edit  tool to do those edits, instead of the default arrow tool. But messing  with those tools somehow we managed to get some video/audio  misalignments (or at least convinced ourselves that we did!) or loss of  sync, so we paniced and restrited ourselves to the regular pointer/arrow  tool.
    17. The multicam documentation linked to  prp2it_multicam.pdf, but those instructions from 2006 are marked as for  Premiere Pro 2.0. I wasn't sure that they were safe to use in Premiere  Pro CS5.5...
    18. In the multicam monitor window, there  was space for 4 cameras. But I only had two. No way to compress the  window to only show 2 cameras? That seemed a bit wasteful of screen real  estate.
    19. Having done the rough multicamera edits  and then gone back and tweaked them, we were then concerned about audio.  Some of the clips had higher gain audio than others,so I wanted to do  gain corrections, generally to an entire clip. The first approach we  tried was opening an audio clip in the source browser and applying the  Volume Level effects control. But this would only give a 6dB boost. Why?
    20. Next, we discovered that we could select a clip in the Project browser and choose Clip > Audio Options > Audio Gain.  Here it appeared that the clip gain could be arbitrarily changed. It  would be nice to have an interface to see all the places that a clip or a  sequence's audio gain could be adjusted, since having several places to  check was a bit confusing. Also, Audio Gain has both a "Set Gain" and  and "Adjust Gain" and their interaction was not 100% clear.
    21. At this point, we were basically done. First shot at exporting to a DVD was via File > Export...Media MPEG2-DVD. it seemed to work OK, but then right as the progress bar was finishing, we got this gem:
it lasted for more than a few seconds and was definitely not confidence-inspiring.
    22.  At this point it was 3am in the morning and mistakes were starting to  be made. Consultation of the manual appeared to suggest that it was  feasible to export to a DVD without using Encore, especially if one  wanted to forgo menus. That sounded great to me, so I took the resulting  .mpg file and rightclicked in the finder and chose Burn to disc...  Well, that was a coaster. But I think the documentation could have been a  lot clearer. Still, lack of VIDEO_TS and whatnot should have clued me  in, right?
    23. Managed to cons up a menu in Encore and  burned the .mpg file to disc, producing a playable DVD. I gave up trying  to figure out how to do it without a menu.
    24. Having  produced the DVD deliverable, there was then a request for color  correction. Of course this is not surprising, why would a Canon G12  match a JVC HD100U? No way! Back in Premiere Pro, I foudn it very  difficult to figure out how to color-correct camera 1 of the multicamera  against camera 2. If I used the multicam stream, there were 100s of  broken-up clips every time there was an edit. I certainly didn't want to  color-correct every one of them. I really just wanted to apply a  correction to all of Camera 1 and another one to all of Camera 2.
    25.  So I opened up the sequence containing both cameras (that is later  imported into a parent sequence and marked as multicamera). Could not  find a way to get the Reference: window to show one camera while the  color correction window showed another. Ultimately we ended up muting  video channels in the sequence temporarily such that the  sequence/program window showed one clip or the other clip, while the  source window showed another. But it seemed like it should have been  possible to display both clips against each other for purposes of color  correcting one or the other.
So, I think that's about  it. I suspect there's a lot I did wrong, and certainly if I had more  than a few hours I would have taken the time to learn the program  properly (and still will!). But there are still a lot of spots where the  program could be better.
    Anyhow, thanks for listening. Cheers!

  • New Customer Experience with Port Forwarding

OK, so my OpenReach Modem and HomeHub 3 were installed last week and all seemed OK at first.
    A bit of background:
I'm a seasoned IT guy and have a nice network set up at home that caters for my needs (most of the time).
Without going into too much detail, I have my own DHCP/DNS server and I run a Webserver for personal use.
I have Virgin Broadband - which work most of the time.
I've also just had BT Infinity installed so I should always have Internet access no matter which ISP is having issues.
I was hoping to be able to access my webserver externally from either my BT or Virgin. I didn't think this would be an issue.
It still all works fine through my Virgin connection. I use dynamic DNS (no-ip.org)  to get to my server.
On the Virgin Superhub - I have DHCP switched off and all my machines (except one at the moment) get the Virgin router assigned as the Internet gateway (via my own DHCP server).
My test machine gets a the BT HomeHub 3 assigned as the Internet gateway (also from my own DHCP server) and I have switched off DHCP on Home Hub.
Before I move onto my issue, I have to say that the above network setup works flawlessly.
The Virgin Router is on 192.168.0.1, The Home Hub is on 192.168.0.2.  (subnet 255.255.255.0)
They are on the same network but because DHCP it switched off on both routers - everything is happy.
I can access my Server from the Internet via my no-ip.org address and it all works great.
    The issue:
I thought it would be relatively simple to configure the BT Home Hub 3 to access my server from the Internet.
Hmmm. Port Forwarding seems to be the issue. It just doesn't work reliably enough. Sometimes it works, then sometime it stops working. Right now it's not working.
At first I though it was just me, not configuring it correctly. But no.
Then I started reading this forum and found there are reports of issues with port forwarding going back a year.
I don't know if that a good or bad thing - an issue running that long must be on the verge of getting fixed right?
Or any issue running that long without resolution probably has no simple resolution or just isn't a priority (for BT) maybe.
    My Question:
(and I think I already know the answer)
Has anyone got a sure fire way of configuring the HomeHub3 so the port forwarding works?
Or should I just throw in the towel now and buy a Dual Wan Router?
    One last note:
This morning my Infinity Broadband Speed dropped from
38Mb down/6Mb Up (measured several times yesterday)
    to
0.7Mb down/0.3Mb Up (yes those decimal points are in the right place)
    And I haven't got a clue why.
I power cycled the HomeHub and it returned to normal. Does this happen to other people?
    Cheers
    Graeme.

the port on your network is defined by lan ip address and port number eg 192.168.1.10:80
you cannot forward this outbound port twice
There is no "port on my network" A port is associated with a IP address not a network.
My webserver listens an port 80 - requests from the Internet for http are port forwarded by the router (either BT Homehub or Virgin Superhub) to port 80 at address 192.168.0.5 (in my case).
If I am trying to access my webserver from the Internet, I point my browser at the WAN IP address of my router (again it doesn't matter which one - BT or Virgin) and the router port forwards the request to my Webserver.  Each router can do this independently.
"you cannot forward this outbound port twice"
As explained above - It's an inbound port not an outbound port.
I appreciate you are trying to be helpful but just telling me something is not possible without explaining why its not possible doesn't really help me.
As I said before, this was working fine, then it stopped working but only when trying to access my webserver via the BT Router. It still works fine from my Virgin Router. I used WireShark and port mirroring on my switch to prove that the Home Hub as stopped port forwarding inbound traffic to my webserver.
This is a problem with port forwarding on the Homehub, not my network setup. Looking at other posts on this forum - I'd suggest I'm not the only one having problems.
To be honest, it's the least of my problems with the HomeHub right now. I'm far more concerned with the fact that twice today I've had to power cycle it because the throughput has dropped from 38Mbit-down/6Mbit-up to <1Mbit-down/<1Mbit-up. It's a known problem, BT are working on it, yet I still am paying full price for a product that should never had made it out of Beta test.

  • Rvs4000 1.3.1.0 new user experience - part two

thorough documentation - too much to ask for?
besides the lack of explaining what the log levels are, why not fully disclose reference info on the various messages one might see with an explanation of how one might use them to administer one's network?
for example, what are these security warnings telling me?
    Mar 30 23:54:01  - ipt_tcpmss_target: bad length (48 bytes)
    Mar 30 19:57:07  - 23 DPT#0 WINDOWX40 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0
    nrf

Yeah, Neal I understand what you mean as far as having some mechanism to translate the messages to a more readable format. The problem with that would require more code to be included in the firmware and more CPU power to process the information. This would cause the device to be more expensive and also slow down the processing of packet information. The log system is made up of different code modules that are designed to inspect different parts of network traffic which adds more complexity. Just to follow one of your examples given concerning NIC duplex, if the NICs do not negotiate proper speed / duplex there would be no readable traffic passing through because we would have collisions. So it would be impossible to get information from the other NIC. All we would be able to capture is the default negotiation of our own NIC and nothing else.
Some of the message outputs are built into the code and relate directly to the TCP information. So taking these messages and translating them would mean more code and even then it would be extremely difficult to execute. What would be nice is if the log told us in a more readable format what "Threshold"; as you stated, was breached to at least point the administrator in the right direction.
The problems you are mentioning are not specific to our equipment however, this will hold true accross other manufacturers and you will also be able to see similarities with logging on a Linux box with IP Tables.
I know I am not really answering your concerns directly, but I can tell you that Cisco does look at the forums and suggestions posted are taken into account. What you can do, is do a google search or look into the O'Riley books for a more in depth look at the TCP packet structure. I do not mean for this to come accross in a rude or "blowing you off" manner, just as a personal suggestion.

  • 7.0 and your feedback on the new chat UI

Totaly agree that it would also be nice to be able to hide the useless "Home" and "Call phones" buttons on the contact list.It can be a part of a "compact list" mode or as a separate option. I never use them.

    Hi Skype Community,
Since releasing the new chat experience on desktops to users on Windows and Mac we've looked closely into the feedback you've shared with us. Since September we've released multiple updates to Skype for Windows and Skype for Mac to incorporate smaller changes based on your feedback.
Today we are making Skype 7.0 for Windows desktop available for download from Skype.com.
    New in 7.0.0.100:
Compact sidebar: Some of you asked us to see more contacts and conversation in the left hand sidebar. Enable the option "Compact Sidebar View" from the "View" menu for a more compact layout.
Compact Chat View: If you can live without your chat message having some whitespace around them to give them room to breathe you can now increase your "message per inch" ratio drastically by activating "Compact Chat view" in Skype Options - "IM & SMS" - Advanced settings. Also don't miss out on the other available tweaks to the UI we wrote about earlier.
Toggle for large emoticons: Some users prefer not to show emoticons sent in an individual messages in a larger size. You can find an option to toggle this in the Skype Options - "IM & SMS" - "IM appearance"
Toggle for unread messages: You can now quickly switch between your conversations that contain unread messages and all by using the dropdown on top right of your "Recent" list. See the screenshot on the right
Touch scrolling: If you are sporting a device with a touch screen like a tablet you can now use vertical finger swipes to scroll in conversations. Better have a screen wipe at hand all the time though
Disabling chat formatting: Especially role players using Skype have shared that they'd prefer the new text formatting options introduced in 6.22 to not apply to their IMs. This formatting is based on the use of wrapping parts of the message in characters like *, _ or ~. You can disable this permanently for all of your chats, by sending the following chat command to any of your chats:
    /setupkey *Lib/Conversation/EnableWiki 0
To enable the formatting again please use this command:
    /setupkey *Lib/Conversation/EnableWiki 1
This setting doesn't seem to stick reliably in 7.0 over restarts of the app. Skype is looking into this.
Please give the new 7.0 version a spin and customize Skype layout and design closer to your liking. We are looking forward for your feedback.

  • What's new in Process Control 2.5?

    Hi,
I'm looking for information about what is new in Process Control 2.5(compare to the 2.0 version)
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Regards,
    Julien

The key innovation of PC 2.5 is the user experience. The highlights of this innovation are:
A new user experience based on work centers which mimics the way compliance and business users actually work
A combination of top session management and sidebar navigation leads to cleaner, more intuitive design
Broad availability of relevant contextual information as appropriate, in the form of documents and links
Pervasive search functionality, with list filtering and sorting capability to deliver information as the user needs it
    Automated testing
Delivered scripts cover Financials, Procure to Pay, Sales and Distribution, and more...
Rule parameters passed to scripts extract data from the source ERP system and return evaluation results with related issues or exceptions to Process Control
Query-based scripts use SAP Query to provide additional flexibility
Use of standard SAP and customer-created reports can be returned as part of evaluation and marked as requiring review to determine whether the evaluation passed or failed
    ANd much much more

  • IE 10 blank new tab and missing favourites problem only when requiring a proxy for first page visit

We are having a very strange situation with one (only) of our 64bit 2008r2 remote desktop session host servers.  The problem we are having is that when any new tab or window is opened it must first open a page that is in the
internet options -> connections ->LAN settings -> Advanced -> Exception. Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with
    Area.  OR ELSE....
The entire contents of the favourites menu below "Organize favourites" is missing, though the favourites explorer bar, and tool bar display the links, but they cannot be opened in the current tab and will not create a new tab when you click open
in new tab.  HOWEVER, this problem is instantly resolved if you manually type into the address bar and visit a site that is in the proxy exception list.  Then that tab starts to function normally, the favourites menu is populated and works, and so
does the favourites explorer bar, and toolbar, and other websites can be visited.
This is extremely problematic.  Looking at the proxy server logs, when the problem is happening no attempt is made at contacting the proxy server.
    Ways we've encountered this problem
If the user has the option set that a new tab opens the 'new tab page' then any new tab experiences the problem.
If the browser is set to open the user's home page(s) then any of the home pages that are not in the exception list may or may not open successfully. But again any of them that opened a page that was not in the proxy exception list will experience
    the problem
when a user tries to click on a website link from an email or document that is not in the proxy exception list, as this opens a new window or tab and it is just blank.
when a website not in the exception list tries to open a new window/tab
This problem is happening for all users on that RD session host server, including domain admins, except for THE domain/enterprise administrator.  Our other 2008r2 64bit RD session host servers and windows 7 machines with the same version of IE
installed on it does not have this problem.
We have tried deleting all IE data, resetting IE, re-registering the ieproxy.dll with the regserv32 command and the problem continues.
Our proxy settings for each user is coming from the group policy setting of 'computer config -> policies -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Internet Explorer -> Make proxy settings per-machine = enabled'
and THE domain administrator choosing to enable the proxy server and disable automatic proxy detection.

    Hi,
Since you have  tried many methods like deleting all IE data, resetting IE, and it works well on other Windows 7 machines, the problem might be some clients didn’t respond to the group policy.
Try to update the group policy with this command at the clients ”gpupdate /force”.
And check whether the client is infected with virus, some virus might cause this issue too.

  • New MacBook Pro 'sees' WLAN but won't allow to select

    Hi
So I just arrived home with a new MacBook Pro and tried to set up my inbuilt airport to connect to my wireless router and no cigar. So frustrating. My old MacBook and iMac are able to connect to the wireless router via inbuilt airport but not my new MacBook Pro. I have tried using the assistant and diagnostics and have achieved no joy. The weird thing is that WLAN comes up as an option and I select it wherever possible but when it comes to the last screen in network preferences, where you select the Network Name, it allows me to select it and then in less than a second it reverts back to 'no network selected'. Go figure.
So it clearly can see my WLAN. I have tried to see what setting are different on this MacBook Pro (accessing internet via cable as no other choice at the moment) and my old MacBook and can't see anything obvious. But then again there's not a lot of settings.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. I love Macs and have been a user/owner for eons but this new one is really frustrating me. Not the usual warm and fuzzy oh I have a new Apple experience. Disappointing.
Fingers crossed one of you out there can help me discover the joy again :-)
    Thalia
P.S. I am using an older Belkin wireless router that my MacBook and iMac can recognise in a heart beat.

looks like I hit the nail on the head with that one. Fact is I'm back to 10.5.2 and NO more Airport connectivity issues.
I have 2 black macbooks, a 15 Pro and 2 macmini's. I've had to roll back 2 of them for the same reason, 10.5.3 clearly breaks Airport connectivity reliability, no ifs ans or butts about it.
I'd like to use automator, 10.5.3 fixes many of the problems with that I've experienced but I cannot go to it as wireless is the only way I have to connect.
Here is what my system.log looks like AFTER rolling it back with Archive & Install:
    Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: sleep
    Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: System Wake
    Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: Previous Sleep Cause: 5
Jul 16 11:51:07 Macintosh kernel[0]: EIR is not supported.
Jul 16 11:51:11 Macintosh kernel[0]: AirPort: Link Up on en1
    Jul 16 11:51:11 Macintosh configd[34]: AppleTalk startup
there is NO Airport Beacon Lost as before, no connectivity problems. My daughter has a brand new white macbook she bought last week, she has a WRT54G Linksys and doesn't have any problems with connectivity, her boyfriend bought a 15" Pro at the same time, he upgraded to 10.5.3 he immediately started having problems (there IS a reason new ones come with 10.5.2), he rolled his back and it works again.
I've done this several times, apple may know about it but they haven't come out with any fix that I know about. I reported it to them the day 10.5.3 came out. I am not upgrading again until I see a patch that specifically says it addresses Airport reliability.
I don't run parallels, or any other virtual machine, hard enough keeping a vigrin OS up to date. The only 3rd party software I run is Firefox and Office 2004.
