New MBP 15 can't work 8-9 hours

Just bought a 15' MBP 2.4GHz online. Everything is excellent, except for the battery. It seems to only work for 4-5 hours without AC, not 8-9 hours like said on the website. The full charge capacity is 6899. I have no idea about these numbers, so asking the experts here: is this right?

Welcome to Apple Discussion.
As RetiredEngineer says the running time on battery depends on the tasks & settings for the computer. You would have to replicate the particular test conditions used by Apple to achieve their claimed performance. Even then batteries vary somewhat when new.
User experience suggests that it is reasonable to expect around 5hrs or better when new - a big improvement on the previous removable batteries. If however you use usb/firewire powered drives, play/burn cd's/dvd's, play processor-intensive games, download lots of material, & the list goes on, you will find the battery needing recharge much sooner.
I use mains power as much as possible but run off the battery sufficiently to maintain it in good condition. For some people, eg tertiary students, mains power is not available much of the time so extended battery performance is important.
Your full charge capacity seems about right.

How do I save an image after I have zoomed in on it?  I can't work out why I can't save a zoom-in the same way
I can save a cropped image or an adjusted image. Thanks, Lily A.

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply.  Have realised that Zoom in Iphoto is just  a viewing tool and not an editing tool.
Was creating beautiful abstractions by zooming in and wanted to create a new image of the result.   Have since discovered that cropping after zooming takes me a little way to where I want to go but it isn't the same effect.  Will perhaps have to try to create it when actually shooting.  Am doing a photoshop course in February and maybe will learn a bit more then, too.  Am pretty much an amateur just finding my way.
    Thanks again,

  • New MBP retina  notification not working

    Greetings
I bought yesterday my first mac and i am pretty excited. I got my self a mac book pro retina 13 which comes with the latest mac OSX Mavericks.
I must say that i used to hear that mac books are pretty solid and everything works as a charm but unfortunatelly i did found some bugs within the first 2 hours of usage (scroling with trackpad occassionally not working on certain apps) but one of my main concairns is that my notification area is not working.
I have set a twitter account and a linkedin account on the "interney accounts" setting. They indeed appear as small tags on the notification area but appart from that it is empty. I also noticed that on the notification area there should be my calendar e.t.c which are still not there.
Any help would be mouch appriciated.
    Thanks

The problem still persists even after reboot... the notification are is sill blank despite the fact that i have configured the apps as it is recommended...no banners no notifications ... nothing :-(

  • If I buy a new MBP today, can I install Tiger on it?

I am not ready to use Leopard yet, and have a retail Tiger box. Will it let me install it? Anyone tried it?

At the risk of getting involved in a fight, Intel Macs weren't available before Tiger (10.4.4 was the first Intel version) so no-one who bought an Intel Mac would really need to buy Tiger and as a result there was presumably little or no use for a Universal retail version; I suppose there's a chance that retail copies of Tiger released after 10.4.4 were Universal, but even if that were true it's definitely not true that all were.
As far as I can tell updated retail disks were released for 10.4.3 and 10.4.6, but 10.4.6 seems to only include build 8I127 (a PPC build) and not 8I1119 (the equivalent Intel build) -- if you do have a retail version that's Universal I'd be interested to know the build number.
Anyway, to address the OP's question: As mentioned by Sig below you may also run in to problems installing older revisions on newer hardware -- lack of drivers for the updated components, requirements for different EFI revisions, etc., may at best mean it refuses to install, and at worst could leave you with a non-booting Mac, leaving you to install Leopard again. You can try it, but be prepared for varying levels of disappointment.
As an early Leopard adopter, though, I'd say you're pretty safe unless you have any apps that have specific issues. Certainly the only problems I've had have been minor, and most reported issues have been on upgrade installs -- clean installs and fresh-out-of-the-box machines are a lot less problematic.

  • Pulled a 450GB folder over to new MBP and can't import to iTunes now (running out of space)

I have moved to MBP and moved 450GB of music over, but can't load into iTunes now because it copies the files again and I run out of space.  How can I just migrate the existing folder over without iTunes trying to copy the files again?

When you File > Add to library, iTunes will copy the files into the iTunes media folder.
Just put the files in /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will move the files, not copy them.
I simply keep an alias of this folder on the desktop.

  • I want to make a iMovie using FaceTime camera on new MBP 13" It will be about 5 hours long. Can/should I make it one long file (no dvd  needed) or break it up for whatever reason?

It is a foreign language dictionary and will be about 5 hours long. Should I or must I break it up into files of say 1 hour long or does it matter? I will NOT be putting it on a DVD

AppleMan's suggestion is CERTAINLY the way to go.
Even if you have enough available hard drive space for 5 hours, the people you are recording (or making the recording) will need breaks during the 5 hours.
Moreover, unless you have paid for a secure recording studio, you may experience noises, light changes, or other interruptions during a 5 hour session.
PLAN to stop whenever necessary.  Expecting to take breaks will make the work far less tense than fearing you will need to "start over" if you must stop.

  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming Bug on the new MBP with Retina Display?

    Hi,
today i got my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I am using Monsters Clarity HD Model One as speakers for my computer and have the new Bluetooth-Module called "Streamcast". This Module is APT-X and AAC compatible and has a really great quality. Normally...
But with the new MBP i can only stream the Audio via SBT (AD2P) what is a much worse quality. On my old MacBook Pro 13" AAC and APT-X was working very well.
Is that already a known issue? What can i do in this case?
    Thanks a lot,
    Rene

so return it for another one if its within the 14 day return policy.  If not, bring it in for repair.

  • New MBP 15 inch - new SDRAM

Hi everybody! Yesterday I ordered my new MBP 15 inch with standard 2 x 1GB SDRAM.
When my new MBP arrives, can I immediately replace the SDRAM by 2 x 2GB SDRAM or do I first have to load the battery and check if everything works right out of the box?
Are there any tests I should do first, to know nothing is wrong with the MBP?
This is my first Apple laptop. What are the best things to do when my new MBP finally arrives?

Before upgrading the memory, verify the laptop is working out of the box.
Calibrate the battery and fully charge it
    Install your software.
Then once everything appears to be in order, upgrade your ram, the upside of waiting is that you can see if there's any issues with the laptop, and if not and you suddenly start having problems after the upgrade you'll know where to look

  • Configuration question(s) and when to buy the new MBP

1)If I was going to get a new mbp today, what i had in mind was to get the 15 inch mbp(2.53 ghz) and upgrade the processor to 2.8 for an extra 300 bucks. Then since I have an external hard drive and space isnt really an issue for me, I was going to downgrade the hardrive on the mbp from 320 gigs ATA at 5400 to the 250 gig ATA at 7200 to save a few bucks. Now this is actually an upgrade in quality/speed..correct? because the speed is now 7200 as compared to 5400? So it will preform better than the orriginal 320 at 5400?
    2) As far as buying the actual computer I want to try to get it around or just after christmas.....if not then, I would get it at the beginning of summer around May. Now it is probable that apple will work out any bugs that owners report in that time. So do you guys think it is better to wait til May so that everyone who has their brand-spanking new mbp's can report any issues and then apple will iron these out? Generally I like to try and wait a little while to buy a brand new model of anything computer related so that anything apple missed can be fixed. What do you guys think about this?

The 250 will perform faster then the 320 because of the rotational speeds

There will always be a faster computer coming out in a few months. If you need/want one in December buy it then. Intel is only going to provide an update (speed bump) to its penryn line next year sometime and will be releasing the Nahelem i7 mobile chipset until Q4 2009 or Q1 2010 which means in all likelihood apple will not be using the next generation chips until 2010. Buy now (or December) because the product line was just updated and the next update is quite a bit down the road

  • Transfer iTunes Library from old PC to a new MBP

My daughter purchased a new MBP recently. What is the easiest way to transfer her iTunes library from her old PC to the new MBP? Can she do this simply by syncing her iphone with the new computer?

The easiest way is to have the Apple Store do it.
You can also call Apple support and they will wlak you through it.
You can also type "move itunes library from pc to mac" into the google search bar.
"Can she do this simply by syncing her iphone with the new computer?"
No.  It will erase the iphone if you sync it to a blank computer.  The iphone is not a storage/backup device.

  • ? Sync iPhone to new MBP

On the first sync to a new MBP, I can't find the "Apply / Sync" buttons, How do I Sync old iPhone to new MBP?

The Sync button in iTunes is at the bottom right corner of the iTunes window.
Make sure the iPhone is selected under Devices left side of the iTunes window in the source list.

  • Can't get iCloud to work properly from new MBP.

I recently bought a new MBP and gave my old one to my wife. I deleted the calendar and contact info from my old MBP since she didn't need it. Only I didn't realize that it would also delete all the information from my new MBP that I had initialized from a Time Machine back-up.
But now, I can't get thinks back to normal. I had recently upgraded my old MBP to Mavericks, so I posted my questions there on the assumption that the problem was with Mavericks. I now think the problem is with iCloud, so I'm posting here as well.
Here's my tale of woe ...
First, I tried restoring my back-ups, but the restored info would literally disappear with 2-3 seconds of being reloaded. I sat there and watched my contacts appear, then disappear. Three times. The Mavericks folks made some suggestions about deleting files from the Application Support Folder. No help. Same results. Watched my contacts load and then disappear 3 more times.
So I decided to start more-or-less from scratch. I deleted my iCloud account from both my MBP and my iPad. I then reloaded my calendar and my contacts from the back-ups on my MBP. Everything fine so far. All calendar items are there. All contacts are there.
I re-added the iCloud account on my MBP. Still okay. Contacts and calendar info still there. However, System Preferences would not allow me to check the box next to "calendar." It said "setting up" then stopped and unchecked the Calendar box. I am also unable to enable the iCloud account within Calendar preferences.
I re-added my account on my iPad. No calendar info, but that didn't surprise me because the calendar wouldn't connect from my Mac.
But the Contacts on the iPad included ONLY those contacts that I had added from the previous recipients window after my last back-up. None of the contacts that had come from my previous back-up were there even though they were on my MBP. So I tried unchecking the box in System Preferences. All of my contacts disappeared from my MBP. None disappeared from my iPad.
So at this point, my iPad becomes a games machine. I can't get my contacts to it. I can't my calendar to it. Email is no good without my contacts.

The iCloud Calendar  and Time Machine don't play nice together. If you accidentally delete your calendars,  they are deleted on iCloud: you restore the cached versions from TM, and iCloud promptly brings them up to date by deleting them again.
However it is possible to restore from Time Machine (or another backup system if it's included your calendars) by following the following steps:
Turn off your internet connection. Make sure that it really is completely off.
Restore from Time Machine or your backup. This should restore your calendars to list under your iCloud username.
Now carry out this process with each calendar:
Select a calendar listed under your iCloud login name.
From the File menu choose Export...>Export. An .ics file will be saved at your designated destination.
Create a new calendar with the same name as the one you've just exported from, choosing 'On My Mac'.
From the File menu choose Import... Select the .ics file and choose to import it into the calendar you just created (make sure you don't import it into the iCloud version).
Now your calendars are listed under 'On My Mac' as well as under your iCloud login name.
Reconnect to the internet. Your iCloud calendars will disappear as before. Now carry out the following process with each of the 'On My Mac' calendars:
Select your 'On My Mac' calendar. From the File menu choose 'Export...' then 'Export...'; from the sub-menu. This will create an .ics file at the location chosen in the Export dialog.
From the File menu choose 'New Calendar' then your iCloud login name in the sub menu.
A new calendar called 'Untitled' will appear in your sidebar under your iCloud login name. Change its name to that of the calendar you exported.
From the File menu choose 'Import...' then 'Import...' from the sub-menu. A navigation pane will open: navigate to and choose your exported .ics file.
iCal will ask you where to import this to. Click the drop-down menu and select the iCloud version of your calendar (make sure not to choose the 'On My Mac' version). Import.
Your calendar contents will appear in the iCloud version of the calendar but this may take some time. You need to leave iCal running until the rotating icon at the top of the sidebar disappears.
You can now delete the 'On My Mac' version of the calendar (control-click it in the sidebar list and choose 'Delete').
You should back up your calendars periodically by exporting the .ics files as in step 1 above and keeping them safely.

  • New MBP mini Display Port out to TV (HDMI) not working

Sorry, I just realized I put this in the Original Folder not the Late 2008 folder.
I bought a new MBP 2.4 GHz, 4 GBs RAM machine in January of this year, 2009. Model Identifier 5,1. I wanted to connect it to my TV's HDMI port. Only interested in getting video to TV since I run sound through a sound system. I have been using my MacBook Air's DVI adapter to a DVi - HDMI cable. I have a Sony Bravia 40 HD tv. Video works just fine from my MBAir, can change resolutions to anything and video works perfectly (audio has a little problem though - high frequency hum out of the MBAir's audio port). That's why I want to change to my MB Pro - audio from the New MBP is good.
With my new MBP, using it's Mini out- DVi connector and using the Same Video (HDMI) cable that I used with my MBAir - it doesn't work. The Display Preference does not detect the TV ever. I just get a black screen on the TV. Not even a flash on the TV like it's trying to connect - nothing.
I can pull the cable out of my MBP 2.4 and swap the DVi connector to the MBAir's cable and put it in the MBAir and it works just fine. Swap it back to the new MBP and nothing.
I have tried two different MBP Mini DVI out connectors, thinking one was bad. I even took the connector I use with the MBAir with me to the Apple Store to have them match the connectors, so I would be assured that I got the correct one. Oh by the way, my MBAir is the original one, not the newest one.
I have read a lot of links on the website where people are having trouble with Monitors using the new MBP Mini DVI video out but could not find any thread that matched my TV problem.
Any suggestions or explanations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi Jim,
Just to clarify, you state that you have a MacBookPro5,1, which is the late 2008 model. The video output on that model is a mini-DisplayPort, not a mini-DVI (like the pre-unibody MacBooks) or a micro-DVI (like your 1st gen MBA). DisplayPort is a different type of port. (Note - I requested an edit of the title of your post to clarify that).
When you connect the TV, in what sequence are you connecting? The 'proper' sequence is to connect the DVI-HDMI cable to the mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, have the HDMI end connected to the TV, have the TV set to Line-In, looking for a signal, then connect to the MBP last.
What happens when you connect it like that? Have you tried System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays?
