New MBP 15 running 10.10.2 constantly hangs

Hi All,
I am new to Mac, 2 weeks and would like your assistance. I just purchased a new 15 MBP which is running 10.10.2.
15 Retina MBP Mid 2014
2.2 GHz Intel i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Firevault is disabled.
The issues:
Cant Log in (After power cycle, After sleep, After wake, etc)
Scenario 1: After turning on the device, i am prompted with login screen. I put in my credentials and hit enter. The login screen is still there and it just spins and spins and never goes anywhere.
Scenario 2: The login screen disappears after i hit enter, and it comes to a black screen. Then the wheel just spins and spins.
I Can Log in but...
Scenario 1: I can log in, but as soon as i try to open an application, it just hangs. Any application. I then get the spinning wheel of death which never goes away. It is not only due to opening applications, but even simple things like opening "About this Mac".
Scenario 2: I can log in, i am able to open applications which work, but over time the system becomes unresponsive. Example: Chrome. My first tab i open up gchat and everything works. I open up a new tab and enter URL, nothing happens when i hit enter. I can open up more tabs, but they are unresponsive. The first tab (gchat) still works, but nothing else does. If i then attempt to open anything else (new app, system settings, etc), the system would hang. Spinning wheel of death. I would let it sit there, but nothing... eventually I need to power cycle.
Troubleshooting:
Reset PRAM and SMC. Still have issues after boot up.
Recovery Utility. Verify/Repair permissions. Verify/Repair disk. Reinstall OS. Still no luck
Turn Off All Automatic Updates. OS X, Chrome, Skype, etc. I thought it might be related to hotel internet speed. (slow)
Ideas:
I seem to only have issues while at the hotel.
Can it be related to the hotel's internet speed? Maybe a background process is trying to use the internet which is slow and is hosing my system?
Can it be related to the hotel's WIFI authentication? It is an open wifi which requires authentication afterwards. I noticed apple.captive.portal is used.
HDD Issue? A thought, but seeing that i've only experienced this issues at the hotel makes me doubt this... However when I tried to repair my HDD using DiskUtility i got an error: "Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" Unable to unmount volume for repair."
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I tried editing to add that Safemode doesnt make a difference... I still have issues logging in, and when i can it still hangs after awhile.
Edit:
Are there any logs i can look at that might help?
I found these Software logs. Is there any relevant information regarding processes.
The below shows when i closed my monitor and went to sleep. Woke up later, entered my credentials, and the system just kept spinning.

  • Will the new MBP's run Leopard (10.5)?

I was trying to boot my i5 MacBook Pro with an external HD that has Leopard. I was able to select that HD for start-up. However, after the chime, it gets stuck at the apple logo and the computer gets very hot.
I'm thinking that the new MBP's don't like Leopard.

Will the new MBP's run Leopard (10.5)?
    No.

  • Will the new MBP still run Snow Leopard?

I am considering buying a new MBP, but I need to know if it will run SL?  Does anybody know?

The Early 2011 MacBook Pro being sold can still run Snow Leopard, I have such a machine here.
There is no hardware/driver difference as yet, perhaps not for long. Apple is keeping it's downgrade options open for now.
Just c boot off the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard install disk, use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the whole drive (deletes the Lion Recovery Partition) and install.
Make sure to make bootable copies of the Snow Leopard install disk
    http://www.walterjessen.com/make-a-bootable-backup-snow-leopard-install-disc/
As you know, the Retail Disks of OS X don't contain the free iLife that comes with new Mac's (in the past on the grey disks or now on MAS)
I don't care much for Lion, less than stellar GUI's can be had for a lot less in hardware costs.

  • Do the new MBPs still run hot?

I have a first generation MBP. It runs really, really hot. Are the new ones just announced any better?

Well so far, I haven't heard nothing about running hot I actually heard from a friend that they run cooler than previous versions, I'm waiting for mine to be shipped from apple, but your best bet would be to do a search around the boards, and see what you come up with.

  • Will my new MBP 17" run okay on a 1080 tv ?

I'd been advised to get a 1920x1200 monitor (LG) but I'd prefer one with a TV tuner, and they are all 1080. Assuming I get the correct cables, would this display run okay - ie, I would get get full screen HD and no black edging ?
    Thanks in advance

yes, just set the resolution to 1920 x 1080 and your good to go.

  • New MBP and heat

I just got the new 2.5GHz MacBook Pro and so far I love it.
I was an owner of the original MacBook Pros (Core Duo) when they first came out and like many people I wasn`t very happy with the heat it generated. So I traded that in for an iMac which I was using ever since and after a couple of years of waiting I decided to give the new MacBook pros a chance.
The difference in heat is quite astonishing . My old macbook pro used to be around 70+ C when using photoshop and around 60 + C when just browsing. The new MBP is only around 50C when using photoshop and around 40C when browsing. Quite the difference I think.
The only down side I find is that the screen isn`t quite as vibrant in color as on my iMac and I also noticed that when viewing Front Row movie trailers they seem a bit low res. Sometimes I can see some large pixels on the screen.
Does anyone else think that the trailers aren`t as sharp as on older macs or is it just me.

The new MBPs do run noticeably cooler than the Santa Rosa (and and earlier) models. It's the quietest Apple laptop that I have ever owned.
As for the display, it looks just as good as my parents' 24" aluminum iMac's.

  • After transferring all songs to new MBP, songs stop short in iTunes

I have a strange situation here. I bought my wife a new MBP 13" recently and started having a problem with song playback in iTunes. I copied all the songs in her iTunes library from her old MacBook to the new MBP. (The new MBP is running Lion 10.7.2, btw). All the artists and songs show up in iTunes on the new Mac. That's good.
However, on the new MBP in iTunes (v10.5.2), many songs will play and then the audio will stop short of the end of the track. For example, using one song as a test, I picked a track that is 4:19 long. iTunes will play about 4 minutes, then the audio will end abrubtly with about :30 left. This doesn't happen on her old MacBook, running the same version of iTunes, and playing the same track.
Both versions of iTunes indicate the track duration is 4:19. I've tested the same song on both Macs to confirm this ONLY happens on her new MBP. And when she transferred the test song to her iPod Touch, the song also ends abruptly before its 4:19 length.
I've now copied her library from her old Mac to the new one a 2nd time, and still get the same issue. Any ideas peeps?

I'm having this issue also, it's really annoying. I delete and download from "purchases" in the store but then another will pop up.. does it on my phone and shuffles as well as in Itunes. I talked to apple and they gave me a 5 song credit but no way to fix the problem.  Going to have to hit them again.
I thought I migh have had a virus or a hacker somewhere so I erased my drive(s) and my phone and started from scratch, not even from a back up and re installed everything fresh.. still happening so it's definitly Itunes.

  • New MBP Core2Duo - just my observation

I just switched over from my MB. I loved the size of the MB, but the features and bigger screen combined with the faster processor and 128mb video card made up my mind. I just wanted to say my new MBP is runs much cooler that my old MB and my first older MBP. Have a great day!

Thanks for posting, good to know!

  • New mbp iTunes 10 - no upgrade available

    Hi,
Brand new mbp 15 running 10.8.2 migrated from a mbp 17 on SL 10.6.8 using the Setup/Migration Assistant.
This new mac is running iTunes 10.7 (21) so obviously there are updates available. Using the menu iTunes->Check for updates... tells me there are updates and the choice to download it. Clicking download runs the App Store which promptly tells me there are no updates available.
When I first ran iTunes it wouldn't run saying there was a version issue with iTunes.itl
Renaming that file allowed me to run iTunes but now as I said, it won't update.
Anyone have an idea? Not impressed that my brand spanking new machine has issues already.
    thanks
    sicr

    sicr wrote:

I think it's actually probably symptomatic of Apple not keeping Software Update up-to-date - it wouldn't be the first time.

  • New MBP set up - restore from time machine

My old MacBook (mid 2007) running Snow Leopard has died. I just got a new MBP Retina running Yosemite.
Now, I have a few question that I googled for answers, but I am confused. I would appreciate any help, guide, orientation.
    (1) Will I have problems restoring from Time Machine, created on a Snow Leopard, to a new MBP running Yosemite?
    (2) Should I say yes when the set up assistant ask me to "restore from a back up"?
My goal is to have all the files, apps, and configuration from my old Mac into the new one keeping the new OS.
    Is that possible?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Vero.

    I got "stuck" here:
"For details and instructions, see the appropriate page:
Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion
Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard
Using Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant on Panther or Tiger"
I have Yosemite, should I follow the instruction for Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion?
I apologize if my question is "dumb" I just don't wanna mess up anything. I also realize my time machine has been created in Lion not Snow Leopard.
    Thanks again!

  • New mbp - finder crashes constantly??

My new MBP arrived today. I transferred everything with the Migration Tool and for the most part, I'm ready to go.
BUT.... Finder crashes constantly and isn't really even useable. At first I thought it was the trackpad, but now I see it is any activity in finder crashes it.
Is this a known problem? Is there a fix?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Running Vista on new MBP.  How can I gt drivers so i can ge vista online?

Hey guys, i just received my new MBP. This is my first mac so to say I am lost is an understatement =).
I am running parallels and vista utimate. I cannot get my vista online its lacking drivers. How can I get this puppy onilne?
    Thanks ahead!

There was a Drivers CD you should have burned with Boot camp. All of you drivers for video internet and sound etc are included in that driver grouping on that disk. If you need to make a new copy go into boot camp under Utilities and create another driver disk. You pop that baby in and BOOM drivers are there. BTW I recomend booting up in bootcamp to install the drivers.

  • Does the new MBP run hot?

I'm looking to buy the new MBP 15". Does anyone know if it runs hot? My current white polycarbonate first generation Intel Macbook always runs ridiculously hot.
    Thanks!

Picked up a new 15" very recently. Subjective heat evaluation:
9400M: Very cool during general use (web browsing/email/etc...) Warm during gaming (WoW).
9600M GT: Warm during general use. Hot during gaming. VERY hot in Windows, gaming or not.
Of note, Windows only sees the 9600M GT, and gets uncomfortably hot (to the point I'm not only uncomfortable using it on my lap, but feel like I ought to be pointing a fan at the bottom-left (where the GPU is located).
The laptop was never uncomfortable on the 9400M, even while running WoW with the laptop directly on my lap. Just pleasantly warm. Same circumstances with the 9600M GT enabled I needed to throw a lapdesk under it, but it didn't get nearly as hot as under Windows.

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.

  • CS4 not running on new MBP, licensing error?!

My 2008 MBP finally bit it and I just got a new MBP with Mavericks. I transferred my old drive over to the new computer but I can't get CS4 to work. It keeps saying there's a licensing error (150:30). Help!!

The CS4 apps should work fine in Mavericks - it sounds as if you're having a problem stemming from Adobe.
If I were you, I would contact Adobe support and see if they have a solution for your problem. It would also be good to know exactly how you transferred the files - you may have to completely reinstall CS4 again to get all of the support files in place.
    Good luck,
