New MBP 17-inch anti-glare display creates a moire pattern when scrolling

This is kind of hard to explain: The color on the display is fine when a page is stationary, but when I scroll vertically, the blues (especially light blues) and reds get a strange tint to them and create an effect that's hard on the eyes. The graphics don't break up or anything but the color vibrates. It's very uncomfortable to watch. I've owned and used many Powerbooks and Macbooks over the years and this is the first one that's had this problem. It's like a moire pattern, or something. Very odd.
Is anyone else noticing this on the anti-glare display? I'd like to know before I go ahead and return this MBP.
Thanks

Sure. No two sets of circumstances are exactly the same, so no one else will have experienced exactly what you've experienced, including the prior replacement of an earlier MBP model for repeated display problems that you haven't specified. AppleCare will weigh all the circumstances of your current issue on their own merits and make a decision about what to do without reference to other people's problems. No one here knows what that decision will be, whether you believe me or not. Call AppleCare.

  • New MBP 15 inch - new SDRAM

Hi everybody! Yesterday I ordered my new MBP 15 inch with standard 2 x 1GB SDRAM.
When my new MBP arrives, can I immediately replace the SDRAM by 2 x 2GB SDRAM or do I first have to load the battery and check if everything works right out of the box?
Are there any tests I should do first, to know nothing is wrong with the MBP?
This is my first Apple laptop. What are the best things to do when my new MBP finally arrives?

Before upgrading the memory, verify the laptop is working out of the box.
Calibrate the battery and fully charge it
    Install your software.
Then once everything appears to be in order, upgrade your ram, the upside of waiting is that you can see if there's any issues with the laptop, and if not and you suddenly start having problems after the upgrade you'll know where to look

  • Is the new 2011 MBP Hi Res Anti Glare screen actually LED

Last time around, my friend bought an antiglare hi res MBP but found that when he received it, it did not have LED tech... it was LCD like the old models. After speaking with Apple they told him that what true and allowed him to exchange for gloss since the site did not say this anywhere.
Is the current MBP the same way or has Apple sorted out how to make the high rez display both anti glare AND LED?

You're absolutely right. I bought a 2010 15" hi-res anti-glare MacBook Pro and found the panel to be significantly darker than that of the regular 1440x900 screens. So what I did was return the laptop and purchased a 13" MBA. After comprehensive testing, I've concluded the 2010 13" and 11" MBAs to be the brightest (led backlight-wise) of all Apple laptops. Unfortunately, not so much contrast as the MBAs have worse viewing angles than the Pros.
It's hard time information like this elsewhere, but for all else looking for a Mac with the brightest screens here's a list:
    2010 MacBook Air > 13" MBP > 15" & 17" MBP > 15" MBP Hi-Res > 15" MBP Hi-Res Anti-Glare > 13" MB
I'm still waiting until Apple unifies all 15" to Hi-Res next year (hopefully) before making the jump.

  • High Res/ Anti-glare display vs. New Retina

I bought (via Apple Hong Kong) my beefed-up 15" MPB with the High Resolution/ Anti Glare display last November and the quailty is outstanding.
Considering the display quality only has anyone compared the two side by side? If so, I would be curious to hear your opinions and thoughts.
    Regards,
P.s I should also mention that I am an American living and working in Sai Gon (aka Ho Chi Minh City) Vietnam and although Apple products do make it here the lag time is several months, hence the inabiltiy to see for myself.

Why don't you instead just use a piece of rounded edge glass in the rare times when your doing that?
Your one of the very few that has to actually draw on their screen, most use a drawing pad Walcom tablet, iPad or import a scan or image into Adobe Illustrator rather than hold their hand up to the screen for hours.
Don't you know you can command shift 3 or 4 to snapshot a image of anything on the screen? SnapZ Pro X will record video?
Seems to me your doing things the wrong way.
The anti-glare MacBook Pro is awesome when you take it to various places and can still see the screen and can't adust the enviroment to suit.

  • Best way to clean the anti-glare display

What's the best way to clean the anti-glare display?

Use a damp lint-free cloth with light pressure.  iKlear has products if you are worried about damaging the screen by using chemicals other than water.  DON'T USE WINDEX!  It contains ammonia which can damage the screen.

  • Brand new MBP 13 inch, "NO AirPort card installed" message

    Hello!
I just bought a new MBP 13 inch and cannot connect to my home wireless network. On the top bar and when I put the mouse cursor on the AirPort icon it says "No AirPort card installed". Shouldn't the card be pre-installed by Apple though? Currently I'm using an ethernet cable to connect to the internet which works fine.
    Thanks very much in advance!

Open Utilities/System Profiler and in the left column click on Airport (in the Network section), does it show any details for the hardware or is it blank ?
Try doing a Parameter RAM reset - hold down command/option/p/r keys at start up and wait for three chimes before releasing the keys.
If still no joy then you need to take it back to Apple for them to check it out.

  • Is there any store that sell MBP with anti-glare display?

I googled, but I can't find any store which sell those version. Is those version sell only at Apple Store?
My location is in Japan now.

  • 17" Unibody Anti-Glare display is STUNNING!!

I received my 17" Unibody Macbook Pro with the Anti-Glare screen today. I was somewhat concerned having purchased it with the Anti-Glare option. I use Photoshop every day as a graphic artist/photographer and color accuracy is very important to me. Today I calibrated my 30", 20" and the new 17" Unibody display. I am very excited to report that this is the first laptop I have ever used that can keep up with the desktop displays. The colors looked very similar on all three displays. The colors on the laptop are much better after I calibrated it. The factory settings were a bit too cool in my opinion. The calibration also proved this to be so. I also turned off the auto dimming. I also noticed the default in battery mode is dimmer than on AC mode. This can also be turned off. I went to the Apple store to view the 17" standard glass display. I am 100% pleased that I went with the anti-glare.

How do you ascertain that the finished hw calibration is set to '70%'? I hardware calibrated my Unibody 15" MBPs andas well as my 2 newly arrived 17" Unibody MBPs (one gloss, one 'anti-glare'), with an Gretag MacBeth Eye-One Pro system, a ColorMunki Photo unit, and the Spyder 3 Elite, usually running the Eye-One Pro profile for most runs. My clients output on everything from Epson 3800s to Heidelbergs, ProPhoto RGB to Hex to 7+ plate runs, spot/lacquer/process, newsprint to 10-point coated... my 15"Unibody MBPs (glossy, natch) can just attain acceptably accurate calibration to IS, period, and I'm wondering if, between the narrow viewing angle and the apparent dithering in some color midtones, whether the 15" MBP displays are hardware 24-bit, but rather 16-bit dithered... my 15 MBPs are barely acceptable for the critical photo retouching and pre-press design work I do every day in Quark, P-shop, Illustrator and various Binuscan, etc. apps... OTOH, both the gloss and anti-glare 17" MBP displays, once calibrated, are of course both warmer and dimmer than the Apple factory LCD profile and the setting of '100%' brightness in System Preferences>Display. NO quality calibration hardware CMS profiler result will NOT dim any display in good condition (this obviously doesn't include 2-3 year old non-LED backlit laptop or desktop LCDs, even IPS ones), and usually warm ANY display, whether LCD or CRT... back in the day, just north of 5K color temperature was more common than the 6.5k now often in use. The mechanical brightness capability of a laptop display is more relevant 'back in the day', when the red guns in particular of the Barco and Sony CRTs 'dimmed' with age; they needed to be MUCH brighter than what was needed for pre-press calibration, to compensate for the CRT's phosphor 'decay'/RGB gun aging...
all that said, (sorry about the lecture), I'd be very interested in how, on the 2009 17" MBP, you were able to ascertain that your display after hardware calibration was at '70%' brightness... I set the display to 100%, turn off the ambient sensor, of course, and then do the calibration... the screen's dimmer when that profile is selected, but in ALL cases, with ALL my hardware profiles, the screen remains, at least in System Preferences, at 100%... is there a place in the s/w of your calibration unit that tells you what it 'dimmed your display to, using the System Preferences' '100%' Brightness as the baseline?
    Thanks in advance! =^D

  • I've plugged my ipod classic into my mbp 13 inch with retina display but I can't sync or charge it ?

I recently purchased a macbook pro 13 inch with retina display, am having a great time coming over from Windows! I went to try and sync my ipod today for the first time but unfortunately I cannot charge or sync my ipod when connected. I'm using the standard connector that came with my ipod classic and tried both usb ports on the macbook but have had no luck. I tried looking for the ipod as well on the computer but I can't see it .
I'm pretty sure I've done everything correctly, but am still trying to get used to using my macbook so have probably overlooked something !

HI Matt542, and welcome to the community.
Did you transfer your iTunes library over to the new mac? If not, you should because once the Mac recognizes your iPod it is going to delete the music on it unless you have transferred the old library.
Your iPod can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time.  If you try to sync it to a new computer/iTunes library the process will erase what is currently on the iPod and replace it with the content that is now in your new iTunes library.  If possible, copy your entire iTunes library from your PC to your Mac first.  Here are a few ways to do it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
One way to do it is to use your iPod Classic as an external hard drive and copy it that way.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329
Otherwise, you'll need to use one of the methods described in this Apple support document to copy content from your iPod back to your Mac.

  • New MBP 13 inch. Question on battery

    Hello!
I got the MBP 13 inch few days ago and notice how fast the battery goes down. However, I'm sure that's normal on MBP?
Anyway, my question is: Any tips on improving the battery life?
    Thank you,

  • Issue with the display on MBP 15" with anti-glare screen

    Hi Everyone,
my MBP 15" is only 7 months old, so I need to dig the warranty info out.
However, I am curious to know whether anyone else has experienced a similar issue with their screen.  Mine has developed a series of small shadows at the bottom of the screen, it almost looks like a theatre stage!!
Has anyone else had this problem?

Many people have. It's a fault in the display backlight. Have it repaired while your machine is still under warranty.

  • New MBP 17 inch Problems with Windows Vista, and BF 2142

    Hello!
So I just have 2 little issues that bug the **** out of me. OSX runs flawless. I love it.. But I use Vista to run Battlefield 2142.
So my first issue is the microphone. If I go to close the lid of the MBP, I get feedback from the speakers, and microphone. Even though I have the microphone on mute for Vista, it doesn't mute the microphone all the way.
If I Hook up a headphone to the output jack I can close the lid since it disables the MBP speakers.. But all my tapping and grunting can be heard via the heaphones.
Does anyone know if there is a fix? Or why the **** Vista isn't muting the device properly?
Now my other issue is Battlefield 2142.
I can get it running only when I have a External monitor plugged into the MBP, and the Lid is closed.
If I try to run Battlefield 2142 without a external monitor, and using the Display of the MBP, it crashes.. I have tried a ton of different Resolutions, and it is always the same story each time.
If anyone else has had these issues, and has found a solution, please share.
    Thank you!
P.S Oh, another thing. I have a Quad G5 that I run Logic Pro on. It came out right before the Intel Mac Pro machines. If I sold the G5, and and used this new Macbook Pro, would the Macbook Pro that I now have perform better than my older G5 in Logic Pro?

found a fix. has to do with the ini file... just had to do more searching on google.

  • Is the color accurate on the new MBP 15" vs a Cinema Display?

I currently have a 2.4GHz MacBook and the screen is very inaccurate as far as color reproduction goes. As such, I've had to get the 24" LED Cinema Display to work on. It's great, but I really enjoy being able to work away from my desk in Aperture, Adobe CS4, etc...
So - I've been considering getting a new MacBook Pro 15" which seems to have a MUCH better screen. I went to the Apple Store today and they had a 15" MBP connected to the LED Cinema Display. I had uploaded a couple JPGs to my iDisk so I could compare Apples to Apples.
Unfortunately I'm a bit more confused now than I was before. The colors on both the LED Cinema Display and the MacBook Pro look equally good and equally correct - but that said, they are very different. The JPGS I looked at had different tones, brightness, etc when viewed at the same time on both screens.
So... which one is correct? I can't spend time designing print materials only to have them go to print and be way off.
Any input regarding which screen is true to color/hue/tone/etc???

    Hi Jeremy,
I'll preface this comment by stating that I'm not a professional photographer or anything of that nature at all. I don't have any professional knowledge of these panels, just anecdotal knowledge and what I've learned from reading over the last few years.
The MBP displays are very good for notebook displays. In fact, you will be hard-pressed to find a better looking screen in a notebook computer, especially for the same price. The displays in the MBP are noticeably superior to those in the MB, as you know. That said, they are still TN panels (though some of the best TN panels), which are considered the "worst" type of display for color accuracy. The reason Apple uses them are they are thinner, lighter, and more efficient than S-IPS panels, which are magnitudes more color accurate.
The Cinema Displays are (and have been for a while) certified S-IPS panels. Properly calibrated, they are some of the best LCD screens (for the money) you can get for proper color reproduction. There are, of course, much better screens, but they'll cost you.
Take a look at the following links I just found, they can explain this better than I can!
    http://www.pchardwarehelp.com/guides/lcd-panel-types.php
    http://www.digitalversus.com/news_id-6441.html
    So... which one is correct?
In short, the Cinema is correct. You'll want to keep your Cinema, even with the MBP, if you need the most accurate color to print.
