New MBP 17 - When playing DVDs/CDs rattles/vibrates every 10 seconds

Hi everyone. Love the new machine but wondering if this is really normal. While playing DVDs, about every 7-10 seconds there is a ridiculous rattling/vibrating sound, sort of like the noise a 12-year-old air conditioner makes when it's on and the glass and window frame are shaking every few seconds. This can't be right. I assume I need to take this back to the Apple store -- or should I mail it back myself via Apple repair?
Or are all the drives like this? I just can't imagine anyone being okay with a DVD soundling like a tire going over the warning treads every few seconds...
Thanks
John

Hey guys,
I notice there's a few topics going on for the 17 inch MBP now, so I thought I might help out. There is a topic here where some of us have been posting about the same problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2162948&tstart=45
I previously had this problem with my unibody under Mac OS X (with 5400rmp Hitachi HDD), and I found a post on the big 100 page thread with someone suggesting a utility called HDAPM which might help. I have found that this utility did indeed help on my 17 inch unibody, I haven't seen a single freeze since running it, the machine is smooth as could be. Others in this topic appear to have had similar success.
I posted some instructions here on how you can install HDAPM and set the necessary setting via terminal:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10283888#10283888
Maybe some of you guys should try it. One thing, this apparently may reduce your battery life slightly, but I haven't noticed anything too drastic.
For anyone who does try, let me know if it works for you.

  • Burned Playlist to cd, but when played in car songs pause every 8 seconds.

Recently I burned my playlist to cd.
The burning process went fine, it spanned 3 cd's.
When I put them into my car stereo to play them, the songs
will start playing then there will be a pause for about 2 seconds then start playing again, then pause after about 8 seconds, then start playing again etc. etc.
So, I tried burning the cd's again, this time with different
brand of media cd's, put them in my car to play, but again the same problem.
I burned several cd's a week ago that play fine in my car.
Anyone have any idea what's wrong?

I know this is pretty basic, but you might want to try lowering your burning speed.
Go to "Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Burning".
Switch your burning speed to something like 12x, or maybe 8x.
Then, try the burning process again, and see if it's sucessful or not.
(It might be a good idea to not have very many other programs running when you burn the playlist).

  • Satellite 1100-Z14: I get the only picture but no sound when playing DVD's

I know mine is a fairly old notebook, but despite updating with latest firmware, I have an intermittent problem when playing DVD's (Reg 2) in that I get the picture but no sound, particularly with some older DVD's.
    CD's are ok.
Toshiba repair agent says it is a software problem and they only deal with hardware problems.
Can anyone tell me how I can deal with this problem please ? ( apart from getting a later model ! )

I think I may have stumbled on the problem, I use IntervideoDVD7 and under audio effects there is an option
'Sydney Theatre' etc, I changed it to 'off' and the sound cames back. maybe I should study their manual a bit more !

    buckmacie,
has the video been completely downloaded onto your MacBook Pro when you start to play it? Or are you playing it while it downloads, AKA streaming it?

  • I dropped my iphone, it cracked (it alredy had some cracks in it) and the screen is black but sometimes has a background light.. When i plug it in to charge or to the computer it vibrates every 10 seconds and itunes does not recognize it. What can I do?

I dropped my iphone 4 pretty hard, it cracked (although it already had a few cracks in it) and now the screen is black but sometimes has a background light turn on and then off. Holding the home button and off button at the same time do not work. When I plug it in to charge or to the computer it vibrates every 10 seconds and itunes does not seem to recognize it. It gets really really hot when plugged in (which I don't think is normal).  icloud does not recognize it under "find my iphone" either. What could the problem be? I am wondering if dropping it dislodged something inside. if so, what did I dislodge and is it possible to fix this myself?
    Thanks

Sounds like that drop was a critical one, my friend. I would make an appointment at your nearest Apple Retail Store, because you're going to need a replacement. Also as a side note: the reason that the charger is making the phone vibrate over and over is because there is a disconnect somewhere in the charge port of the phone, causing it to plug in and out over and over.

  • Pavilion 23 hot when playing dvd

I do ot play DVDs very often on my new Pavilion 23, but I just put one in and noticed that the screen is very warm where the DVD player would be and the other side feels normal.
Is this common and should I be worried?  As I said before, I've had this computer for about 6 weeks, but I don't play DVDs often.
Any help you could provide would be great!

  • Ghosting when playing DVDs

Hi, using RX2600XT diamond and connecting to my LCD TV via vga. When I play some DVDs, especially dark scenes and fast movement, I see trails and ghosting. I see the previous scene for about few seconds on the screen and if there is arm movenet, you see the arm trail as a shadow.
These DVDs play fine on my regular DVD player and using the same DVD.
Any idea what is going on or what I need to fix this?
    Thanks

What DVD software/codec are you using to play DVDs?

  • No sound w/ WMP when playing DVDs

The picture looks fine and I have sound when playing music, video & Flash files. Also I have two drives and no sound on either of them and i have tried several different DVDs

    Hi rbfeik,
Did you by chance upgrade from Vista to Win 7?
If so, did the DVD player work prior to upgrading?
Did you upgrade using the HP Upgrade Assistant?
I'm thinking you need to install a Win 7 version of your DVD software.
Here is the Win 7 64bit software and drivers page for your PC:

Look for DVD related software and drivers.

  • A small logo of Dolby Digital or DVD-Audio missing when play DVD-A or DVD software with SPDIF

I can see these logo before when I play DVD-A or play DVD movies with SPDIF enabled on DVD software such as PowerDVD. And now it's gone, when play SPDIF, it does not show these logos at all.
    I appreciate any advises.
    Thanks

for the logos, someone asked how to know what kind of signal his card was decoding. I provided 2 examples:
    http://shingoyab.free.fr/creative/dolby.jpg
    http://shingoyab.free.fr/creative/dts.jpg
if you don't see them but hear correct surround sound, don't bother. On some situation (not determined which one though) the logo disapears. I lost them some rare times. Last times was when listening to some DD music when programming small homeworks in OpenGL.

  • Quality loss when playing DVD authored in Encore on a HD flat screen

    Hi,
I authored a DVD in Encore and i noticed that when i played it on my pc it looked fine but when played using a DVD player on a HD flat screen and projector there is a significant quality loss- the image became pixelated and glittery. I tried playing 3 other professional videos and they were all fine. Something must be wrong in the way i am authoring my video. The encore file is set to 720x576 at 25fps. I created a .psd menu page to match these dimension and besides the movies, both the menu page i created and the menu templates that are already there in the library when you buy the software, look glittery when played with a projector or HD flat screen and projector. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Lack of control over users players/TVs is a problem. And you can try to provide some instruction.
You are right to test your product to see if you have a reasonable chance of your DVDs looking good.
First, test them on a DVD player and a standard definition TV. Your test on the PC is not sufficient. If they do not look good here, you have  problems somewhere in your workflow. (I suspect this is the case. In my tests below, I see no flashing or issues like what you describe.)
If okay there, you need an upscaling DVD player to test on your HD TV. You should also explore the options on that TV for setting size.
For example, I just put a DVD in my Bluray player (hooked via HDMI to an HD 1080p TV). I can set the player and the TV separately to various resolution settings. Forcing the player to 480 and the TV to Normal gives a picture that looks like the original version, using a regular DVD player set to a 4:3 TV. But when I set the Bluray player back to "HDMI auto" (for the resolution), and the TV to normal, I see a pretty respectible picture.
I did the same sort of test using a regular DVD player via regular AV cable. Discovered I had it set to the wrong TV type! I could not see a lot of difference in the picture, even if I stretched it. (It was distorted, of course, but not pixelated, just not the crisp look of HD.)

  • No sound when playing DVD video

    Hi,
I have a K8T NEO2-FIR, Win XP pro. Basic system runs just fine. I have installed an LG DVD-ROM drive model GDR-8163B.  When I play a DVD video there is no sound at all.  On the other hand, there is sound when playing a music CD.  I am using the on-board sound (no additional sound card installed).
I must be missing something pretty basic.  Any guidance would be appreciated.

...sounds like you need to configure the DVD playing software (PowerDVD, WinDVD, WMP, etc.)...

  • IMac 9.1 has stopped playing DVDs, ejects them after about ten seconds without reading them

This morning my iMac has stopped playing DVDs altogether. It had been struggling to play them before, but now it won't even read them.
I'm running a 9.1, so the warranty is well past due. Not sure if there's anything I can do at this point to fix it, tried to manually eject the SuperDrive in Applications (as per a troubleshooting method) but that doesn't work either. Anyone know a way to fix this?

I would start first with some basic resets, do a SMC AND PRAM reset first, do each 2-3 times and then test. If you don't know how please click  Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets. If those don't work then I suspect your SuperDrive is either dirty or worn out. You can go to your local office supply store and get a CD/DVD cleaning kit. If that fails then take the machine in for service.
