New MBP 2.93 tried to fry itself in sleep mode

Just bought a new MBP on Friday.
Put it in a case.
Hour later, opened the case.
Noticed a burnt electrical smell.
Picked it up and about dropped it, it was so hot.
Fans were wide open.
Took about twenty minuets to cool off and start back up.
Lucky for me, I interrupted it before it burst into flames and burned my house down.
I now look at it with a wary eye.
I took it back to the store and "maybe" they will replace it.
We will see.
I am a switcher.
This was my first real Mac.
I loved it for the first 24 hrs.

Even if you are in the middle of a program and you close the lid...... it does not go to sleep?
Yes, when you close the lid, it goes to sleep. But, to anthropomorphize a bit, when you lay down and close your eyes, do you fall asleep immediately after closing your eyes? Your MBP does not sleep immediately when you close the lid. The Safe Sleep process first writes the contents of the RAM to the HDD. The more RAM you have, the longer that takes (up to a minute). During this time, the light on the front is solid; after the write is completed, the light starts to 'pulsate'. If you close the lid, then grab your MBP and take off, you may activate the Sudden Motion Sensor, which parks the HDD heads. That interrupts the Safe Sleep process, with unpredictable results (but usually along the lines of the MBP waking itself up later with the lid still closed).
So, are you waiting until you see the pulsing light before moving your MBP? Apple advises doing so. If you are already doing that, there is some other cause, Bluetooth, etc.
Personally, I never shut down my MBP - I just close the lid, wait for sleep, then take it and go. Been doing that several times a day for over 3 years, and it's never woken up 'on its own'.

Well, that part's certainly true. It works better. In particular, I have often wondered why, while my Apple and work-issued Windows laptops all go to sleep when the lid is closed, on those Windows laptops I have to press a button to wake the thing up. If I open the computer, it's because I'm ready to compute, I don't want open the lid then press a button - I want to open the lid and start working. Why is that so hard for Windows to understand? Sigh. Just one more 'wall' to climb over...

  • Imac keeps putting itself into Sleep Mode.

This morning my Imac has put itself into sleep mode twice within an hour - losing everything I was working on. It just goes black and then loads the log in screen.
I've never had this issue before, it's not over heating (not sure if that could be a problem) it's not full up, it's not lagging it's just this problem.
I really cannot afford the time to take my Imac into the store for repair unless ofcourse it's really needed. Can someone help please?
    Thank you,

    Hi Tori,
Unfortunately I'm unable to help, but I want to add that I had exactly the same problem this morning (Jan 13, 2013)! It was putting itself into sleep mode twice within 5 minutes.
In contrast to TorkiClarkson, the fan of my iMac was blowing hard, but that happened a lot the last months without falling into sleep mode. Actually I'm a bit afraid I've got a heating problem since my warranty of 1 year has experienced..
Hope someone has valuable information for TorkiClarkson and me.
    Thanks.

  • IMac G5 starts up by itself from sleep mode

    Hi Guys,
My iMAC G5 suddenly decided to start up by itself from sleep mode. I put it back to sleep and about 1-2 hrs it starts up again. I bought in 10/04. My local Apple dealer wants $75.00 just to look at it and being a 72 yr old senior, it's a bit stiff.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    chris

OK, if you are sure it is not actually shutting down and restarting (it will do this if you have a defective power supply and "restart automatically after a power failure" enabled in the Energy saver system preferences options), and the problem still occurs with all non Apple USB devices disconnected, then it is probably either a network or a software issue.
Again in the "Energy Saver" Options make sure that "wake for ethernet network administrator access' is turned off.
Now think about any software that may undertake any form of time scheduled activity. Elgato's EyeTV is one example that has sometimes been implicated in this behaviour, but many other things like virus checkers and drive utilities can also be involved. THese sorts of things usually involve components which run in the background even when the primary application itself has been shut down.
You can often get an idea by seeing what is running in the background using "Activity Monitor". Checking your "startup items" is a good idea too in case a software installation has put something there without telling you.
Sometimes these sorts of issues can also involve a computer which is not actually going fully to sleep for some reason. In such cases the screen sleeps but the power light on the computer doesn't start "pulsing" as it should if the computer is snoozing properly .
    Cheers

  • MBP 10.6.4 wont wake up from sleep mode

My MBP is connected to an external monitor and i keep the lid slightly open to keep it running cool (last MB I had overheated and caused battery issues, so was advised to keep lid slightly open). It works fine until it goes to sleep mode, after which it wont wake up. This is annoying as I lose data on documents Im working on as I have to force it to restart.
Is there a solution to this ridiculous issue?

I came across these two useful links. The problem is not gone but is less frequent now.
    http://www.wintellect.com/CS/blogs/jrobbins/archive/2009/11/16/fixing-a-nasty-wi ndows-7-mac-pro-sleep-and-hibernation-problem.aspx
    http://www.troublefixers.com/macbook-does-not-hibernate-sleep-in-windows-7-insta lled-in-dual-boot-with-bootcamp/
John Robbin's solution of resetting PRAM/NVRAM addressed the problem but only temporarily in my case. The problem would recur in an hour.
Abhishek's blog address the opposite problem, but his solution of not having any programs in windows start up helps. I removed skype from the startup.
I also started using Parallels to bring up the bootcamp windows and that too provided a workaround.
    Looking for a cleaner solution.

  • Connect MBP to external monitor without putting it to sleep mode closed

    Hi,
You must be wondering what I mean.
I want to connect my MBP mid 2010 to a external monitor. (Already done that)
    My problem is:
I`m now using my MBP on my external monitor. But, the laptop is open beside the monitor (which is kinda annoying for me) . every time I close the MBP, the laptop automatically puts to sleep, which is normal right? what I want is, using my macbook on external monitor while the macbook is closed and not in sleep mode. Is that possible? Dont know if you understand what I mean, I`m not that good in english.
    :P

Hey! Everyone! If you don`t understand what I mean, (I know that I`M ***** at english) feel free to say "I Don`t understand what you mean! you F*cking IDiot!"...
    just need some help.

  • Western Digital USB3 external hard drive (attached to new MBP Retina) seems to randomly "eject" itself when I'm trying to back it up via time machine. When this happens, I can't even shut my machine down properly. Ideas?

The backup process will run for sometimes 30 minutes or more. But, it's as if, at some point, the drive just can't be found. I get the message "this drive was ejected improperly". When this happens: my machine won't shut down, disk utility won't run. I have to press and hold the power button to force a shut down. Any ideas what's going on here? A MBP Retina issue? A USB3 issue? A western digital issue (although this drive has been functioning fine on old MBP)?
    Thanks!

When you say that you've applied the latest 'patch,' I'm assuming that you mean the latest (July 18) software update for mid-2012 models? It was supposed to address some of the problems with the USB 3.0 ports. I don't think that, in most cases, it's a problem with the drives themselves (USB 2 or 3), rather it seems to be a port problem.
If it wasn't fixed for you using the July 18 Software Update the only thing I can recommend at this point is to see if Mountain Lion - soon to be released - will be able to fix the problems. If not, I would take your unit back to the Apple Store and let them know that you are continuing to have problems with the USB 3.0 ports. They may offer to switch out your logic board, etc.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Using new MBP i7 and trying to install XP with SP3.

When I click on the button to start install, after creating partition, the windows screen comes up and says "Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration..."
At this point the system stays and nothing happens.
Tried a number of times and even tried to reboot with option key pressed.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Apple removed the Windows XP and Vista support for the new 2011 MBPs.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410
XP seems to be too old to handle the latest hardware (Sandy Bridge chipset and processors, Solid Stat Disks, etc.).
    Sorry

  • OS 10.8 just installed. "Hot Corner" to put new iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5  to sleep mode doesn't work. Have tried cordless and corded mouse with same result. Momentary sleep, immediate wake. Any idea how to fix?

Set "hot corner" to put iMac to sleep.  Doesn't work.  Selecting the corner will momentarily put to sleep, but immediately rewakes.  Have tried all four corners with same result.  Have tried with wireless mouse and with corded mouse with same result.  Any ideas as to how to fix?

You've been so great, I want to thank you for all the help over a very frustrating day.  Last evening, I redownloaded and installed the fresh copy of Mountain Lion.  The problem remained.  After installing the new OS 10.8, any clicks on a web page (Firefox browser) didn't open the page, but instead made a copy of the page on the desktop. Felt it must be hardware  degrading, so I set up a case with Apple support for today.  Early in the diagnostics, I had swapped out for a corded mouse and the problem remained.   As a last try, I changed out my wireless mouse for a different wireless mouse. That seems to have done the trick. My Logitech mouse is incompatible with OS 10.8.
    Thank you again, so much!

  • T61p putting itself in sleep mode while gaming

I got my T61p since January and I'm pretty tired of this issue. I've read on the net that it is an issue with some laptop that has a defective motherboard when using two stick of memory (which is my case). Is there any mean to get this fix?
Everytime I start to game for a little while, I have to use a lapcool or else it shut itself off. The heavier the game, the faster it happen.  So please....

I've written my first post a day after I had that shut down I described. Since then, it's running real hot and I'm having trouble with my wireless connexion. I'm having trouble connecting to networks and my download speed is playing yo-yo. HWMonitorPro is currently showing 87 Celcius degree for the CPU (max 95) and my GPU is 71 Celcius degree while in Vista (I haven't gamed with my laptop since I turned it on). The TMH1 sensor is giving 86 Celcius degree right now and has hit 91. I'm pretty sure this is not normal. What should I do?

  • When trying to log back from sleep mode, the screen behaves as a rotating cube, with the mouse pointer in the top left corner. Hangs.

    iMac OS X Ver 10.7.3
    21.5 Inch, Mid 2011
    2.5 FHz intel Core 5
    12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
When the computer in woken from sleep mode we see two login options (bineg used by two users).
But when we try to login, the screen just behaves as a sluggish rotating cube.
Nothing works, we just have to hard boot at this time.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Computer Goes Into Sleep Mode By Itself

Experiencing a weird phenomenon this morning... my PowerBook is sending itself into sleep mode. The battery is charged and it's not overheated. It does it when plugged in and when unplugged.
When I hit the 'power' button to wake it up, it always comes back on, but then shuts off 10-30 seconds later. It's now been on without sleeping for ten minutes or so, but would still like to know what's causing this very un-Mac-like behavior and how to fix it.
    Thanks,
    Matthew

Back to the beginning, then. Are you certain the Powerbook is actually sleeping? Is the sleep light pulsing? If not, the problem is that your backlight is going off, not that the PB is going to sleep. That would most likely indicate a bad inverter board. When the backlight goes off, shine a bright light on the screen, or shine a bright light through the Apple logo from the back side of the display. Can you see the screen image that way? If so, replacing your inverter will probably solve the problem — and if the inverter is failing, nothing else will.
EDIT: BTW, I meant to mention this earlier but forgot. In your original post you implied that you habitually hit the Power button to wake the computer from sleep. That's probably not a great idea, since there's a small risk that you'll accidentally shut it down that way if you aren't really paying attention. I always wake mine using a Shift key, which carries no risk at all of causing anything odd to happen — not even of typing a stray character into an open document, or moving the cursor from where I left it.

  • UPS lost my new MBP

Yesterday, I finally received my new 17" HiDef 4G 250G HD Mac Book Pro after UPS lost it for 24 hours. They delivered it to another address and then insisted that they delivered it to my home! The next day it showed up with no explanation of where it had been.
I've run the machine for the past 24 hours with absolutely no problems. The transition is the easiest I've ever had, going all the way back to the Apple IIE. I opened it up and it immediately logged on to my wireless system.
    Observations:
I got it from MacMall this time to save state sales tax. Also MacMall offered an installation package of bootcamp and XP Pro for less than I could buy the XP Pro by itself. Additionally, they sell a warranty extention for about the same price as Apple Care that does everything Apple Care does AND includes damage protection. In the past, I've had Apple Care and almost never had to use it. The one time I tried to use it when paint boiled off the bezel on my Titanium Power Book from heat, they refused to do anything because it was "cosmetic".
The Hi Def non-glare display is absolutely stunning. It is so bright that it makes the display on my aluminum G4 Powerbook look dirty grey. The large format does do some funky things to some web sites, such as the opening pages here on Apple's discussion page. Even though the window is wide, the displayed page is narrow and forces some of the text to be displayed in columns.
The battery is HUGE, but the mag safe connection is brilliant.
The lighted key board is just right as opposed to the Powerbook where it was useless.
I bought a Targus back pack this time around instead of the brief case I have been using for ten years.
Despite the many compaints here of the new MBP running hot, it had been cooler than my Powerbook. I am going to install a fan utility on the Powerbook to make sure they are working right.
Using the migration utility, I was up and running within 15 minutes. The included software is very extensive. The only thing I added was an upgrade to the newest Photoshop from my existing one. I already had MS Office and removed the demo. iWorks is impressive and I will probably buy it. The only thing that took time after that was figuring out how to transfer bookmarks, my address book, and songs from iTunes.
After closely monitoring some of the problems people have had with the MBP, I have had a tremendous feeling of relief and elation at such a flawless transition.

Nice to hear that you’re happy with your new MacBook Pro. BTW: Unless you really need it, you may want to hold off on iWorks since it’s been awhile since the last upgrade. As you may know, Apple doesn’t offer any discounts on iWorks upgrades and based on history, I would expect to see another revision in the not so distant future.
...Boy, can you imagine what UPS would have to pay if they had truly lost it?!

  • Problem Installing SSD in new MBP

Hi, I thought this was gonna be easy: installing a new Samsung 128GB SSD in the optical CD/DVD drive of my new 13" MBP. How wrong I was. I thought the H/W bit would be tough, but the S/W got me instead. What I did:
I left the original HDD (500GB) in the bay & put the Hardwrk's Adapter (& SSD) in the CD/DVD slot - tricky but no real problem.
Rebooted & installed CCC, used DU to format the SSD as a Single GUID partition with MAC OS (Journaled) format - seemed OK.
Used CCC to clone Everything on the old drive to the new one, again said OK. Checked the SSD in DU, repaired permissions, etc.
Reboot, Option key, boot from SSD - here's where things start going wrong. Takes 30s to boot, so cannot be an SSD :-(
In DU the original HDD is still root "/" mount point, so the reboot failed and it reverted back to the SSD.
Tried taking out the HDD & boot only from SSD - Mac fails to properly boot. Reset.
Considered that it might be a CCC problem, or maybe a DU error in formatting, so today:
Booted from MAC OS X ML Recovery USB stick, redid the partition step, but did not reformat the drive.
Reinstall ML fresh, was taking too long (c.90m) so I left it running, will check at lunch time...
Have checked here & on the net, and I do not seem to be doing anything wrong, this usually works for most people - any ideas?
I could try putting the SSD in the HDD bay, but it should work from the 6MB optical bay in a new MBP?
Any thoughts on what went wrong or what I could do to fix this would be most appreciated...

Yes, I thought of that (I was prepared). :-) So I put the new Samsung SSD in my PC to check the firmware version first (as you can't do this on a Mac), which was up-to-date, so nothing to do there. I hope this did not cause a problem with the disc (which I am beginning to suspect - ironic because I chose this disc for Mac compatability), as I set it to GUID partition on the PC ready for speed testing (which I then could not do).
Update: the OS re-install from the USB key failed, did not even look like a working drive this time (single folder red warning icon on it), and didn't come up properly on the Option Reboot list. Based on the above I went into the Recovery Partition from the HDD & did another reinstall from there. This time I changed the partition type to something else (Mac), then back to GUID single & reformatted it, Mac OS (J). It is busy doing the OS install, c.90m again, so will check tonight, but do not hold out much hope...
Only option I can see now is a H/W problem with the CD/DVD drive adapter, so will try one last time by removing this & swapping the SSD for the HDD then reinstall OS direct from USB key.
Should this fail I am all out of options, as the SSD is useless as a 2nd disk or external from the MBP. Only option would be to try to clone the OCZ Vertex III 120GB SSD in the PC onto the Samsung, use this in W7, and swap the OCZ into the Mac? Or just give up & sell it on ebay. :-(
PS: On reading other posts on (Smasung) SSD replacement for MBP HDD, I should note that I did NOT copy the Recovery partiton from the old HDD to the new drive, figuring the old disc would still be in the machine (as a data volume), so I could save a little space on the SSD itself, I was told this would not be a problem, any thoughts?

  • I am setting up my new MBP Pro with Retina with Time MACHINE

Brand new MBP Pro with Retina   I have an existing wireless network do not have an ethernet connection to plug the time machine into.  Its int the attic
    Having issues with this.
Would love some simple step by step directions
When I tried to set it up it wanted to create a new network.  Don't want that.  I want to be in the existing network.
    Thanks in advance

If you want to back up a computer running Yosemite just at this point in time.. I would buy a USB drive and plug it into the laptop and use that as the backup target..
It is simple and is likely to work just fine.. you can leave the USB unplugged and just do the backup once  every few days.. when you plug the drive in.. a small 2.5" 2TB will self power from the USB on the Mac and is fast and very convenient.
I suggest that only because it is so much harder to get Yosemite to work on the TC.. and if you have it plugged in remotely.. it can be most unreliable.
A tech cannot really help.. this is an OS problem.. he can set it up to run perfectly and it will fail the next day. Apple need to come out with some fixes.
For now.. if you want to have a go.. please just go and plug the TC into your router. Use ethernet.. plug it WAN port of the TC to the LAN port of the router.
    WAN on TC..
    Read the apple setup info.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA428/en_US/TimeCapsule_SetupGuide.pdf
Run the setup wizard in the airport utility.. on iOS device like ipad is often better than computer running Yosemite..
It should pretty well set itself up.. you can then setup Time Machine.. on the computer which again should be able to find and use the TC without issues..
Tell us if you run into trouble and we can give specific help.
