New MBP battery issues

I am new (sort of) to owning a Mac, I bought my macbook pro a couple days ago, so far I havent used it much for other than surfing the net. My question is regarding the Battery time remaining indicator, first of all it changes alot, so i never truly know how much time I have left. Is this normal? It can say anywhere from 3-6 hours left when I am at 90% battery. Usually at 90% battery it says I have about 4.5 - 5 hour left. I thought I was supposed to get up to ten hours of battery? The percent indicator seems to go down fairly fast like 1% every few minutes. Is this Normal? Should I take my macbook over to the apple store to be checked out?
Also I downloaded Coconut battery and have been monitoring the battery condition since I got the laptop tuesday. and the capicity has already dropped.

Your battery life is adjusting itself to determine how long your battery will last under the current conditions it's operating under. If you're running lots of Flash or working in Photoshop or Premiere, you're power will drain much faster. Once you quit these applications and go to simple web browsing, your battery meter recalculates.
That small a drop isn't anything alarming, yet. Try calibrating the battery.

This should be done once each 1-2 months.

  • Hi everyone! New MBP Battery issues!

i just bought a mbp 15" 8GB recently online from apple  ( 4/13/2011)  BTW-  i just switched from being a pc user to mac and am in looove with macs now! My issue is that my mac has been plugged in all day. i unplugged it to watch a 2 1/2 hr net flix movie. I started with 98% battery but after watching the movie and replying to a few emails I ended up on reserve battery? Apple advertises the 2011 MBP to have 10 hrs of battery life. Did I get a lemon? Is anyone else having this kind of an issue? Oh am I'm not running a bunch of programs at once I double checked that.
Thanks in advance for any help !!
    Kristin

    Hi Kristin,
I've attached a screen shot (taken directly from Apple's website) regarding the 15" MBP's battery life. A couple of differences from what your machine is capable of and what your expectations are:
1.) You'll notice that it's up to 7 hours of wireless web surfing.
    2.) It's up to
    3.) It's 7 hours, not 10 hours
Earlier generations of this machine did advertise more, I suspect Apple realized that only their test lab machines under less than typical conditions were routinely getting that. Streaming Netflix, especially over WiFi is going to give you significantly reduced battery life, definitely better than 120-150 minutes but you won't see near 7 hours either.
I'd be curious to have you recharge the machine and see how much run time you get on battery using the machine normally (not streaming Netflix).

  • New MBP battery won't charge unless closed

I've had my 17' MBP for 3 months and I'm having more issues with it than my last 2 macbooks combined. My problem now is that the battery won't charge unless the laptop is closed, and yes, I use only Apple authentic chargers. I first thought it was a bad charger, so I ordered a new one from Apple and it still won't charge while I"m using it. Any ideas on what to do? Or why this would happen. I'm also having problems with trying to restart it after software updates, it tells me that Mail won't close so I can't restart, even when I quit mail prior to initiating the restart.
I have a feeling I'll get my money's worth out of Apple care this time around and I like the removable/replaceable battery on the older laptops, I wish they wouldn't have changed that.
    Thanks!
    Kara

Went over my laptop with an Apple Genius today and did two things, one or both of which contributed to resolving this issue.  The first thing was actually shutting the computer down and restarting it.  I typically don't do that for weeks or months at a time and this can help some of the internal power settings establish a baseline.
The 2nd thing, which I think had the most impact, was to take the 980+ items on my desktop and move them into a single folder on my desktop.  Each file icon on your desktop in OS X gets drawn using the same procedure as the one that renders an open Finder window. So each desktop icon is a separate object that gets managed, rendered and displayed by your graphics card and that means my graphics card was doing the work it would take to display over 1000 different Finder windows. That work is shouldered largely by the GPU, so it does not show up as CPU core activity in the Activity Monitor graphical plots, but it does seem to show up as part of the percentage of Finder CPU time that is reported in the list of running processes in Activity Monitor. That Finder CPU percentage was spiking a lot, as different events triggered a refresh of my desktop. I think it was this extreme overtasking of the GPU that was driving my laptop's power needs beyond what the adapter could supply.  This would explain the correlation some people see with this problem and watching video, as well as a strange 25 second hang that I would see in the Finder after using Quick Look.  This would also explain why people report having this problem recur after having their entire laptop or power adapter replaced. This is an easy fix to try, at least. YMMV.

  • New KitKat battery issues

Upgraded to the new KitKat 4 days ago.  Ever since the new update, my battery has been draining quicker than before the update.  When looking at what is using the battery, every day it is something different.  One day, google play services, the next was the phone, the next day was media.  None of those apps were even used those days, so there is no reason for them to be using battery.  This new update is terrible!!!

Battery drain after the Kitkat update has been a problem for some folks across a range of devices.
I'm a Moto X user, and this has been discussed at length in forums for that phone, though I have not seen it myself.  Android OS  seems to be one source of activity often cited as using battery power.  I don't know how well any of these would translate to your case with the S4 because of the different UIs, but some questions might be useful to know:
    1) do you routinely have weak mobile signal and/or wifi?  This is a big source of battery usage, and kitkat may be more sensitive to it.
    2) are all location reporting services on, all the time?  Have you analyzed how often your phone 'wakes up,' or syncs data?  Does it happen even overnight when it is not being used (if still powered on)?    Anything (apps, services) that tends to wake your phone even when not in use will drain.  You may have to force stop/deactivate apps one at a time to see if that makes a difference, or use a battery monitoring/analysis app to help with determining the culprits.
    3) Do you charge while powered on or off?  Unlike the battery pull method, some folks have noticed that powering down the phone, charging it, then disconnecting before rebooting has made a difference.  Something about a bad kernel in the charging software within kitkat causing the issue is what I recall.
In any case, you aren't alone, and lots of folks are hoping the next update to kitkat will address this problem.

  • New X230 battery issue

I got my new X230 back in June with Windows 8 Pro 64 and a 9-cell battery. About a month ago, I noticed that when the battery reaches ~ 40%, its power immediately drops down to 6%. The condition is registered as 'good'. I was wondering if anybody else has experienced a similar problem. As the power manager doesn't work on Win 8, I don't have a way to reset the battery. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This means there is few damaged battery cells in the battery pack, and would require warranty replacement.

  • 13" 2010 MBP battery issues

Yesterday I spilled some water on my MacBook Pro. It worked fine afterwards but I shut it off just in case. This morning it wouldn't start up. The battery LEDs said the battery was fully charged and my charger's light was green. I unplugged the power cord and took the bottom cover off (my warranty is up). Then I unplugged the battery and plugged it back in. My computer then automatically started up. However, the battery icon has an "x" over it and the computer shuts down as soon as I try to log on. Since I did that the charger no longer lights up and the battery LEDs also refuse to light.
WIll replacing the battery solve this problem, or is my MBP done for?

Take the MBP to an Apple store genius bat for a FREE evaluation.  They should be able to diagnose it properly and then your question will be answered.  Anything said here would only be speculative.
    Ciao.

  • 2011 13" MBP Battery issue?

I went on camp over the weekend to find my MacBook Pro in its usual spot on top of my bed, exactly wher I left it. As I attempted to boot it, I realized it was futile as I ran my battery out just before I left. I stuck my 60W MagSafe in their and left it for a while whilst I hooked up my Xbox to foxtel. The light on my MagSafe adapter was green and I pushed the power button. That system resume loading bar appeared. The laptop was extremely slow and the battery icon had an x in the middle. I consulted google immediately, in which I found a way to reset the SMC. I tried it and it Only made my troubles worse, the fan runs at full blast when I turn it on. Adding that my battery indicator no longer works as well as the battery icon with an x in it, I'm puzzled as to what I should do. There is an apple store 45 mins away but I find it hard to get over there. Please help :/

Shut the system down completely by either Pressing the power button and then select Shut Down or if that does not work then hold the power button down until the unit turns off. Leave it off for 1/2-1 hour with the AC adapter connected.
Since you ran your battery completely empty it take time for it to recharge to a state that will allow the MBP to see that is OK again. mAll MBPs use both battery and AC power when the AC adapter is connected. Withotu some charge in the battery the unit thinks the battery is no good.
    Good Luck.

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.

  • Have any heat issues been fixed in the new MBPs

I'm interseted in buying a new MBP. Does anyone know if any of the heat issues been fixed in the latest MBPs? And are the GPU's still underclocked?

Nicolas, I've got a week 12 MBP and have never considered it to have a heat problem.
Just made another 15 minute run of System Load with both CPUs at 100%. The CPU temp momentarily hit 78 C, then the fans kicked in (quietly) and the temperature stabilized at 73 C.
The current CPU temperature is 51 C, which is normal for routine writing, Web browsing and downloading to my database. When I'm doing database work that frequently but for only brief bursts pegs the CPUs, the temps run in the high 50s to low 60s C. On battery power, the temps drop several degrees C.
The computer remains comfortable to use at all times. Note: I use it on an aluminum tilt stand, whether on my desk or in my lap.
Haven't done the "grease fix" and don't plan to.

  • Should I buy a new MBP?  (Lots of small issues with mine)

    Hi,
There are a number of small but irritating problems with my MBP. Talking with a friend who has had her macbook into apple service 3 times now for replacements a lot more serious than my problems, I'm sure Apple won't replace the computer. A friend who has bought a couple MBPs now (later week version) has had very little problem with his.
Specifically, the issues I'm having are as follows:
    1) CPU whine (I know this can't be fixed)
    2) Fan "moo"/clunk. The computer sounds like a small helicopter at times and at the best of times is always noisy..
    3) Heat issues - using the comp anywhere but on a flat surface (i.e. on my lap) and it heats up intensely. I know this is an issue with all computers, but compared to my powerbook it's night and day.
    4) Lag Issues. Doing ANYTHING takes a "long" time. I need to reformat but from opening firefox to booting up the computer or even sometimes mousing over the icon tray.
    5) Red headphone led. My internal speakers no longer work. I've read the problem has something to do with the headphone jack being stuck. Some fixes I've read include using a match stick, plugging in the headphones again (doesn't work).
    6) My display flickers slightly now also. Seems to synch with the fan "moo"ing.
I'm using macintosh now because I like avoiding hassles. I switched from PC a few years ago after going through lots of issues and the powerbook was AWESOME. I'm assuming the macbookpro is going to eventually stabilize and work well also, is it there yet? Shall I buy a new one and just dump the current or will it be the same thing all over?
    Macbook Pro / 12" Powerbook Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for all the advice, it's appreciated. Particularly the advice to go down to the mac store and talk to a guru. I'm going to do that tomorrow.
I've been able to tolerate things up until the latest bug, the fan now periodically starts spinning like a helicopter. It's way beyond anything I've dealt with.. I can't listen to music it's so loud and it disturbs anyone else around (clearly needs a fix).
I can't send it in to be repaired as I can't do without a computer for that long. This said I thought to connect the new and old machine and copy the most important files over.
(No I won't dump this lemon on someone else without letting them know about the issues. It may well be worthwhile to someone willing to nurse it through the various mac warranty & update issues. Eventually they may well end up with a new MBP).

  • Any Bootcamp issues with the new MBP? What about right clicking?

Tried out the new MBP at the Apple store... was wondering how Bootcamp would work with it. I use Bootcamp all the time for work so I'm interested to here the pro's and con's for the new models. Seems like the new trackpad clicking would be cause issues with the "two-finger click" in Bootcamp.

    Right clicking issues galore!
(at least in the windows side of things...)
    The 64bit windows worked fine....
The 32bit windows had many issues, even after 2 attempts. (via boot camp)
The main issue: the functions keys are locked on. Normally, I would hold down "fn" and push "f10" to mute but that doesn't work. All I have to do is hit "f10" and its muted. That is all good until I have to right-click using the "shift+f10" method since the bottom-right-of-trackpad and two-finger-clicking doesn't work whatsover. The "shift+f10" method won't work now since the fn keys are locked on. We have NO IDEA what the problem is. Could it be a driver issue...though it works fine with x64bit and OS X side of things.
Oh, and mac doesn't give support if one installs Vista and Microsoft won't give support since it isn't on a 'native' pc, so we are screwed. They have both protected themselves and blamed it on the other and the customer is left out to dry.

  • Will leaving the charger in hurt the battery on the New MBP 17"

I rarely need to unplug my new MBP 17", but with all the talk about battery problems, I wonder if I should unplug it from time to time and not just leave it plugged in.
Right now its been plugged in for a 1.5 weeks... While I don't think this could hurt the battery, I thought I would ask...

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
"For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. *Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time.* An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month."
    http://batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
" A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges."
"Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate."

This last link is the best summary of good advice on maintaining lithium-bsed batteries that I have ever seen.

  • New MBP - Best way to care for battery?

Not sure if this is necessary anymore, but I am receiving my new MBP in the mail later today. What is the best way to care for the battery? Should I plug the MBP into the wall for an amount of time before turning it on, or at least wait until it is fully charged before turning it on for the first time? Is anything like that even necessary anymore?
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Here's what Apple recommends:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Best use is frequently and lightly. Be sure to calibrate your battery every two months or so:

  • New MBP = Goofy Display Wake + Keyboard Issues???

I would like to know if anyone has had the time to try a new MBP out to see if the new Intel Chipset helps with any of the issues that the last MBP's have.
Mainly, if the new chipset fixes some of the wake issues that people have been having, or the keyboard issues where the first character is missed when typing.
Has anyone had a chance to test this out yet?
(I realize that I am jumping the gun a little, but I am really curious)

Do the new (Feb 2008) Macbook Pro models have embedded numeric keypads, along with home/end/page (up/down) arrow-key labels? Have the numeric keypads and arrow-labels been removed, as has recently happened to the Macbook line? Apple's "Design" page for the Feb. 2008 Pro doesn't give a clear answer -- it has some photos of Pro keyboards that include an embedded keypad and home/end/page (up,down) labels, but also includes several photos of Pro keyboards without these.
If the embedded keypad is indeed gone: _poor move, Apple_.
PLEASE put this back on the Pro machines, and soon!
Here's why: Actual "pros" (e.g. advanced tech- oriented users) are much more likely to require the numeric keypad for a range of uses, both in much OS X software (from advanced image and video software to Apple's own keypad mouse control) plus in the Boot Camp world of PC software including non-intuitive PC-style 3-digit alt-character entry. Heck, embedded keypad could have even then been pointed to as a newly differentiating feature of the Macbook Pro line.
There can of course be some software remedy -- but hardware change is the only way to really restore to easiest use, getting the symbols on the keyboard caps. Users should not be expected to memorize these; the embedded keypad may go unused by a user for a straight year, but then need to use OS X or PC software for which the numeric keypad is the only way to perform certain functions.
    Apple: can you
    1) Put back numeric keypad and arrow-key labels

  • New MBP issues with certain games

I have a new post Feb 08 MBP. I have bought the Diablo and Starcraft Battle Chests, Fallout, Fallout 2, and Knights and Merchants. I have issues with all of them and these issues cannot be duplicated by owners of pre Feb 08 MBPs.
The Diablo and Starcraft issue has been recognized by Blizzard and they are working with Apple:
    http://www.battle.net/forums/thread.aspx?FN=support&T=535843&P=1
Reports to MacPlay about Knights and Merchants, Fallout and Fallout 2 have gone unanswered.
Can any other new MBP owners confirm the Fallout or K&M issue?
With Fallout I and II I have obvious graphical issues with the palette. K&M loads but I only get sounds, no window at all.
If you have issues with Diablo II and Starcraft please post on the battle.net site above. Thanks!

    Hello all,
This seems to be a problem! I wonder if it will be similar with the new iMacs that are coming out with this new processor!
So yeah, when I load up Fallout 2 on my new Macbook Pro I get the weird graphics palette and on only one half of the screen. Seems a little phishy to me! I don't even know if there is a patch that could help! It SHOULD be solved my Rosetta or something . . . but if the new Pentyn architecture is faulty, it would have to be a recall, not a patch!
Makes me a little nervous to tell you the truth!
