New MBP comes with Mavericks - Upgrade vs Clean Install of Yosemite at this point?

Bought a New 13" MBP today from my local Apple Store.  It came with Mavericks instead of Yosemite.  I realize there is probably a lot of advantages to doing a clean install of any OS, especially when you have a lot of usage on it which creates files all over.  However, I'm wondering if that advantage is minimized by doing an upgrade with a pristine OS.   If very few, if any, files are left behind from Mavericks that are no longer needed does it matter?
Obviously upgrading saves me from having to go through the hassle of creating a bootable USB (wherever that thing is in one of the many junk drawers).

If it were I, I would just di a clean install if you have not configured it already...it's good to have a bootable USB hanging around just in case. It's easy to make one in Terminal if you have at least an eight (8) GB available with this (I just finished one):
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointeraction

  • Does iMovie comes with mavericks upgrade?

My hard drive was damage and I wasn't able to upgrade or restore my Mac, the good thing is that I made a backup before the hard drive got damage. I had to purchase a solid state drive (I know they last less than the hard drives), I installed ran the new OS Mavericks, but I find out that it does not come with imovie or iphoto. How can recover these apps without having to purchase the through the Mac AppStore.

If your computer shipped with a disk or you have an iLife 11 DVD, install it from there.
If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID used to register the computer and download them from the Purchases tab.

  • Does a new MBP come with iLife?

Does a new Macbook pro come with iLife? I'm specifically looking for iPhoto and Garage Band. I just ordered it today. Do I have to add it on or does it come with it? I got iWorks preinstalled.

Yes, the full iLife '09 suite (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, and Garage Band) is preloaded, and also on Install DVD 2 that will come with the MBP.

  • Failed TM backup after Mavericks upgrade via clean install. Nothing works incl. "tmutil" command. The time points appear but not clickable.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion via clean install. Restoring my data via migration assistant failed. Then I tried Time Machine. Altough I can see all backup time points no one is active. Then I tried to inherent and to associate the backups to the "new" disk, but it didn´t work.
    Thanks in advance

Hit the nail on the head Eric, I have quite a lot in there due to system age, so turned them all off and had a nice fast system returned with no hanging.
so definately something in the startup group and i will try each at a time and see where the problem comes from..
Looking at more logs my guess is the problem will be with one of -
    sabnzbd
    sickbeard
both of which starting on login, both using databases and im seeing sql errors on startup...
more info when i have enabled/disabled some more apps.

  • Why did my MacBook Air (purchased 4/6/14 at Apple store) have no charge left on battery and did not come with Mavericks (I had to install)?

Could I have been sold an older model? (And yes, it was in its original packaging.) At the time, I was told that it was because I bought a maxxed-out unit, and that those tend to "sit on the shelf" longer than the less expensive units. I'd appreciate any advice.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To check if you have got the most recent MacBook Air model, open  > About this Mac > More Info. If you see you have got a Mid 2013 one, you have got the most recent MacBook Air.
Note that you may have purchased a Mac which was manufactured before the Mavericks launch (in October 2013). You can check which OS X version your Mac has got in  > About this Mac; 10.9 is the most recent version, and the latest update for OS X Mavericks is 10.9.2.

  • New macbook air didn't come with Mavericks?

I ordered a MBA last week from the apple store and received it today -ordered it with additional RAM.  I am surprised it didn't come with Mavericks installed since the version of the OS was released last month.  Anyone know a reason for this?

There are a few people getting such machines, they can do it for you at the Apple store if you need help, its free regardless.
As for "new old stock" , we are talking about something thats only a few weeks old as "old stock without mavericks".

  • Hello apple guys, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

hello apple guys, after installing OS X Mavericks, i can't open app store, reminders, contacts, mail(crash), maps, Image Capture, and other apps that comes with Mavericks OS, how i can solve this problem?

So is this the way Apple works now? Not solving customers problems? I'm sure so many users have had this problem. I've had, and I reinstalled Mavericks 3 times. Works fine for some days and then several Apple Apps stop working. Is that a way to force us ti update to Yosemite? (I don't want to) and then pay to update some third party programs (i.e. Pro Tools). Also, there are so many 15" MacBooks Pro with graphic problems and of course the guys at the Apple Service Centers always say: "It's the logic board, you can have it replaced, but it's so expensive I would recommend a new Mac".  I really, really miss Steve Jobs!

  • I am setting up my new MBP Pro with Retina with Time MACHINE

Brand new MBP Pro with Retina   I have an existing wireless network do not have an ethernet connection to plug the time machine into.  Its int the attic
    Having issues with this.
Would love some simple step by step directions
When I tried to set it up it wanted to create a new network.  Don't want that.  I want to be in the existing network.
    Thanks in advance

If you want to back up a computer running Yosemite just at this point in time.. I would buy a USB drive and plug it into the laptop and use that as the backup target..
It is simple and is likely to work just fine.. you can leave the USB unplugged and just do the backup once  every few days.. when you plug the drive in.. a small 2.5" 2TB will self power from the USB on the Mac and is fast and very convenient.
I suggest that only because it is so much harder to get Yosemite to work on the TC.. and if you have it plugged in remotely.. it can be most unreliable.
A tech cannot really help.. this is an OS problem.. he can set it up to run perfectly and it will fail the next day. Apple need to come out with some fixes.
For now.. if you want to have a go.. please just go and plug the TC into your router. Use ethernet.. plug it WAN port of the TC to the LAN port of the router.
    WAN on TC..
    Read the apple setup info.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA428/en_US/TimeCapsule_SetupGuide.pdf
Run the setup wizard in the airport utility.. on iOS device like ipad is often better than computer running Yosemite..
It should pretty well set itself up.. you can then setup Time Machine.. on the computer which again should be able to find and use the TC without issues..
Tell us if you run into trouble and we can give specific help.

  • When will mbp comes with mtlion natively?

when will mbp comes with mtlion natively?
is there a way to check or makesure before i order them online ?
    please advise

No one knows - shouldn't be a problem, though, as you'll be able to get a free upgrade to ML using Apple's up-to-date program.
It was released last week - assume that machines made after that will ship with ML. I doubt that any of the Apple folks would know, save for those on the manufacturing floor.

  • After the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan and save the file to desktop or documents.  You can only see the image in the print preview area. Does anyone know how to fix this or when a fix will be out?

After Aple support downloaded the new 10.9.2 Maverick upgrade on my MacBook Air, my Photosmart C4480 3 in 1 printer can not scan a document and load the file on to my desktop or document file. (You can see the doc image in the preview but it doesn't save it.) Does anyone know an Apple fix for this or when the fix will be out?  After hours of trying reloading, and the usual fixes, etc. Apple told me to call HP, and HP told me they don't support Mac.  It does not seem honorable of Apple to put out an upgrade and not tell people it will destroy their scanning ability, and that the only thing to do is to buy another printer/scanner.

Have you tried using Applications/Image Capture to scan.
    Vuescan often works.

  • My new mac mini with Maverick does not go to deep sleep even if i press power button or Apple-Sleep mode.

    Hi.
I have my new mac mini with Maverick that does not go to deep sleep even if i press power button or menu Apple-Sleep mode. He goes only to something like stand-by  (power lid is on; after i turn off and then turn on the power he does not wake up just starting). I tried "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X", tried mode 0,1,3, and even 25. nothing helps. he goes to deep sleep (when all data on HDD) only first time after i change hibernatemode couple times and force it to sleep. Today i even tried to force it to sleep (menu Apple-Sleep mode) and NOT turn off the power for whole night, in the morning he is in this "stand-by" mode anyway.
Could anyone help me please? i need it sleep but don't want to keep my power on for whole night.
