New MBP early 2011 Dynamic Graphics Card Switching Bug

Fresh out of the box 2.3GHz quad core i7 MBP 15" with HiRes Screen.
A sudden white or blue "Flash" of the entire screen repeats every 1 or 2 seconds. This occurs without any foreground applications running. Also, noted sudden flash during Screen Saver... where it would appear to awaken for 1/2 a second, then back to screen saver, every 10 - 20 seconds.
Bottom line.... Disabling the Automatic Graphics Switching in the Energy Saver System Preferences fixes it. No more screen flash.
I installed gfxCardStatus app (http://codykrieger.com/gfsCardStatus). With this you can set the laptop to use either the "integrated" or "discrete" graphics cards specifically or you can set it to "Dynamic Switching".
Each card used works fine. No flash with either card. Only with the "Dynamic Switching" option does my screen "flash" repeatedly. This is most pronounced when on battery power. The gfsCardStatus shows the laptop repeatedly attempting to switch graphics cards for no reason I can see. The only "login Item" I have is "HP Scheduler".
In Activity Monitor Utility the CPU process at the time of the screen "flash" is "WindowServer".
Anyone else with new quad core i7s seeing this?
Any fix? The Automatic Graphics switching is a nice idea... too bad I can't use it.

I think I solved my problem.
I found two, seemingly unrelated, processes running in the background using the "Console". I removed all "HP" related "Login Items" from my User Account. I also deleted all old, unnecessary items from the /Library/LaunchAgents/ folder, including "com.seagate.notificationexec.plist". For some reason now, without these background processes, my computer no longer tries to frequently switch graphics cards.... I have no idea why, but it seems to work. For the last 24hrs... no blinky! See below.
The "Console App" indicated a couple background processes happening that seemed unrelated to graphics. Below is the log:

  • Since the new MBP has a discrete graphics card...

would you be able to upgrade to a better card now!?

Unfortunately, the MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air all have their GPUs mounted directly onto the logic board. So even though the MacBook Pro has the discrete card, unlike the MacBook and MacBook Air, it's not a card from the perspective of a desktop... AGP/PCI. It's not removable, upgradeable or individually serviceable.

  • SD card reader is not working in my MBP early 2011. Is there any solution?

SD card reader is not working in my MBP early 2011. Is there any solution?

on my macbook iphoto didn't recognise my camera or card reader after upgrading to iphoto '11,
Evenutally I went to an application called Image Capture which I seem to have already.  This read the camera contents.  I selected the images I wanted and then imported them into iphoto which was one of the options given.  It worked.  God knows why one has to go through two steps.  But I'm feeling pretty triumphant. This may help you if you haven't already sorted it.

Well, I ran the progran anyway, TechTool that is and looked for updates within the program and it said I was running the latest version 3.1.3. I ran the program and it crashed. I was the crash test dummy.

  • How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?

Had since May/June last year i5 13" and only since I applied all updates few weeks ago it seems to be louder than it was before?
It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

How much noise should the hard drive make on a MBP early 2011?
    None.
The machine should only make noise if the Superdrive is being used or the CPU's heavily used, going by my Early 2011 17".

It's possible it wasn't installed correctly and/or the case is slightly off so it's resonating the hard drive vibrations.
Make sure you have a internet connection (don't move) and reboot the machine holding the d key down like forever and Hardware Test will run.
Backup your data off the machine, if the hard drive dies under 1 year or three years with Applecare, then go get a new one. else you can replace it yourself with a better one and not void your warranty if you don't break anything doing so. Add more RAM while your at it.

As you know Mac's are made by hand by young Chinese women working 12 hour shifts performing the same function every 7 seconds for only $1.20 a hour. They live 7 to a box room and have to pay 70¢ a meal.
All in all I would say they are very tired, and it's possilbe a few defects made it to your machine.

  • After EFI Firmware update 2.3, MBP Early 2011 will not boot. During restart it all went wrong please help!

    Hello,
I've done an ample amount of Internet research to find an answer to this problem however nothing yet found is quite like this. I will start from the beginning.
I am traveling through Europe, and I normally live in California. When I arrived in Ireland my MBP early 2011 15 inch, began crashing constantly when I had several tabs open on Chrome and maybe one or two low CPU/Memory using applications, nothing the 8gb RAM &750gb hard drive can't normally handle. Thus I began trouble shooting.  I ran disk utility once started up and repaired both disk and permissions. Still crashing. It didn't seem like it had anything to do with a kernel panic shut down, I never would receive the usual message indicating so. After that I did an SMC reset. It was still crashing. I then upgraded the OSX from 10.8 to 10.8.4 believing it could help. It did momentarily, but then crash again. (When it crashes screen goes black suddenly and upon pressing power button does a regular boot on my single partition). I decided attempting to repair using the Internet recovery option but it appeared my MBP had not yet have it installed, so I downloaded from Apple and began installing. Here I made a mistake, I unplugged the power source as it was restarting. When the gray screen and apple appeared, the loading bar shows up as it says it will when installing the update, but when the bar fully loads it crashes every time. I've tried starting in safe mode, which then loads but never goes further (I let it stand for two hours such as that and nothing). Then I decided to allow the MBP to fully charge overnight to give it time and charge. This morning the problem has stayed the same, even with power source plugged in. Please help I need this to work.
Thank you and please ask any questions!

Your constant crashing problem is probably some type of hardware fault which no update can fix. Doing the 10.8.4 update and then the firmware update just caused further problems. you need to take thr system to a apple store to be diagnosed and fixed if cost effective.

after making the photo slide show, i clicked share>export movie.  after which i burned using toast. the file became a .mov.  i tried playing it in my mac and it worked. my fear now is will it also play in a regular dvd?... i read from google that mov files won't run in dvd players.  what format should i convert it to so it'll play in a dvd player.  can you suggest a faster way i can burn my projects for it takes me almost an hour to export.  im going to make 28 slideshows for my kids in school. *=( if i need to do this process 28 times, i may not be able to finish it on time.  please suggest a software or an alternative as to how i should do this... m more comfortable using imovie than iphoto.  thanks and i hope to hear from someone soon *=j

Thank you QuickTimeKirk...used toast to burn project... my project was in .mov, i tried to play it a dvd player, it did play... will try again tomorrow using another dvd player just to be sure it'll will really work with dvd players.  thank you again for your reply *=)

downloading ML over 80 min's......how long will this go on???  MBP early 2011 running 10.7.3

I have a late 2009 MBP and I have noticed that just surfing the internet has caused the machine to run 20-30 degrees hotter. It used to hover around 40C (according to iStat...obviously it would climb under a load) when I was bumming around the net (no videos) and now it is anywhere between 60-70C doing the same stuff. I didn't really notice it till the other day when all I was doing was working on some bash scripts so at that point it was under very little load and it just seemed quite warm.

Your issue downloading Mountain Lion appears to have been answered HERE. I'm betting you are both running Antivirus.

  • Distorted graphics on MBP Early 2011 in 10.9.2

Today, all of a sudden, the graphics inside my Finder window are distorted.  I've never had this problem before today.
To my knowledge, I didn't install any new apps or updates.
This problem ONLY exists INSIDE of Finder windows and no where else.
So far I've tried these solutions...
1-I turned off automatic graphics switching and restarted.
2-I have installed the gfxCardStatus app and am running on my discrete graphics card only.
3-I ran this command in terminal - sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1" and restarted.  When I do this, I get about 5 min. with Finder working and then it starts the graphics corruption again.
Does anyone know another solution?  This bug in os x 10.9.2 is driving me nuts!
    Thanks!

    Kiraly,
Yes, the graphics corruption appears in the screenshot...it really weird because it's ONLY in the left bottom side of the Finder window, no where else.  If I reboot, everything works fine for about 3-4 min. and then the corruption returns.  And the other weird part-Finder interfaces work fine in any other app too.
Any ideas you may have would be greatly appreciated!  This is really slowing down my workflow.

  • MBP Cycles Through the Graphic Cards when MS Office Apps Load Templates

I am preparing my MacBook Pro mid-2010, running Mavericks, for my girlfriend. I created an admin account for her and deleted mine, as well as my old user files. But now, when opening MS 2011 apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), while loading the the template gallery, the computer starts cycling between the integrated and Nvidia graphic cards many times, making the screen flicker and the process takes a long time. I have gfxCardStatus and it sends tens of notifications to OS X, which keep popping up on the screen. The video card cycling also happens while selecting 'File -> New from Template...'. If I disable the Automatic Graphics Switching, so only the Nvidia card is active, loading the templates is very fast (but this is not a solution, really).
I reinstalled Office 2011, updated it to version 14.3.9, but it did not help.
This was not happening before, when I was using the computer from my account (and neither happens on my late-2013 RMBP). This phenomenon is very frustrating when opening and using the MS Office apps and I will really appreciate your help to fix this.
    Thank you.

    Anyone, please?
I noticed that the switching back-and-forth happens only in MS Word and MS Excel, as MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook are supposed to permanently use the the discrete card anyway. To reiterate, the switching between the graphic cards happens only while loading the templates in MS Word and MS Excel (when the program starts) and is very annoying, and it sometimes even crashes my gfxCardStatus, too.
I hope someone could please suggest some ideas. Thank you.

  • New IMac GeForce 8800 GS Graphics card is really GeForce 8800M GTS

After calling NVIDIA I've finally discovered what this graphics card REALLY is.
This card is NOT the GeForce GS that was recently renamed to 9600 GSO. That card has 384 MB GDDR3 Memory with 550 Core Speed.
The new IMac GeForce is 8800M GTS.
Heres some specs on the new card:
    Pipelines 64 - unified
    Core Speed 500 MHz
    Memory Speed 800 MHz
    Memory Bus Width 256 Bit
    Memory Type GDDR3
    Max.Memory 512 MB
    Shared Memory No
    DirectX DirectX 10, Shader 4.0
    Power Consump 35 Watt
    Transistors Million
Features 1250 MHz Shader clock, Pure Video technology (H.264, VC-1, MPEG2, WMV9 decoder acceleration), HDCP-capable, PowerMizer 7.0 energy management (dynamic switching between performance and energy saving), HDR (high dynamic-range lighting), designed for Windows Vista, Dual-Link DVI-D exits for resolutions from TFT up to 2560x1600, PCI-E 16x, OpenGL 2.1, Gigathread technology.
Anyway, hope this clears up some confusion for people. I know it baffled me for a good few.

  • MBP - To get NVIDIA graphics card or not?

Hi all - my basic question is this: **What real world benefit do i get from the NVIDIA card?**
i know it's a quick and simple question but I'm having a surprisingly hard time getting an answer on this on the Net.
The background is this: I'm a part time web developer who just bought a refurb late 2013 MBP 15" 2.6Ghz 1TB with the NVIDIA 750 card (running Mavericks) and am pretty appalled at the battery life I'm getting.
While doing 'normal' tasks, like browsing the web, listening to itunes, watching a movie in VLC etc etc i get about *3 hours* or less and that's without any coding or development work! this increases to around 5 hours if i 'switch off' the NVIDIA card and force it to run on the IRIS chipset (using gfxCardStatus).
so i decided to try running Aperture, Photoshop and other graphics intensive apps in IRIS only mode and didn't see any real difference in performance from when i have them running with the NVIDIA card active (various filters and layer effects etc seemed just as fast)
Now - i can return this machine and buy a NEW MBP from Adorama without the NVIDIA card for the same price that comes with 3 years of Applecare AND an Apple TV!
So - what would i be losing? which apps would see a significant drop in performance? I'm sure Cinema 4D and Maya and the like would be much happier with the card, but i dont really do any 3D modeling and only very occasionally some light CAD stuff.
i do use Photoshop and Aperture quite a bit, however - but like i said, i haven't seen any noticeable difference between using them with the NVIDIA card vs the integrated chipset.
Truly the only difference i notice is the battery drain!!
Am i missing something important here?
I'd love to hear from some of you professional web devs out there (or anyone else with knowledge on the matter).
Soon as possible would be great!
Cheers all - and Happy Holidays
    - Bennett

    Hi Col,
Had already several questions, about crawling CP. Mostly it was linked with big files on systems with too little dedicated memory for graphics and/or to little RAM-memory.  The minimum requirements specified for Captivate will perhaps work if you have only that application open and with small files. Of course, since you'll remain with 32-bit only 2GB can be used by programs, so that leaves memory for graphics if you have 8GB. Personally I always have preferred a dedicated graphics card, my laptop has 1GB card (NVidia) and my new desktop a 2GB card. But I'm also using a lot of Adobe applications (not only Photoshop but also Premiere Pro, After Effects). I know that when I added 8GB RAM to my laptop (it had a NVidia card) to the available 4GB, Captivate got a boost.... My desktop has 32GB of memory but I'm a real multitasker. I was told that the buitl in Graphics now work much better than a while ago, and honestly never tried with a system without a graphics card.
    Lieve
