New MBP, FCP won't open

I just changed over from a first-gen MBP to a new one, used Migration Assistant to bring everything over, which seems to have worked well. Except for FCP, which will not open. I was on 10.5.whatever and FCP 7, now of course I am on OS 10.6. Having browsed here I see that I really need to do an un-install and re-install from the disks because MA doesn't transfer everything needed for Pro apps. Right?
Last year I upgraded Studio Pro; can I use the upgrade disk to do the install? After all what it uses from the previous version is the serial number, as I understand it. And do I need to un-install everything (the other studio apps, though I don't really use them), and will that upgrade disk install everything I need?

The upgrade disks with serial number, and the serial number from the previous full version you purchased is all you need.

.itl file is locked error after installing new build - iTunes won't open

After upgrading to the new build itunes won't open. I receive an error message "The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file." When I check permissions I have full control. I tried uninstalling all apple components - iTunes, Quicktime, apple updater - rebooting and then reinstalling but the same error message comes up when I try to start itunes.

Even after uninstalling the .itl file remained in my itunes music folder. I deleted this file after uninstalling again and then reinstalled and the issue was resolved.

Then you have two version of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.x is in your Applications folder.
Pages '08/'09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

FCP won't open certain projects

When I attempt to open certain projects FCP won't open. It starts up then before it opens it shuts down. I'm able to open and work in other projects and sequences.
When I was able to open and work on this particular sequence it seems to shut down when I edited, moved or rendered a still image (jpeg and pdf). I'm wondering if these are corrupt and if so how do I "uncorrupt" them.
I've already trashed preferences a number of times.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well thank you all for your help - but as many of you guessed, it was a PEBKAC issue - namely me!
I was so sure that the versions of FCP were the same, I neglected to look at the 2 relevant "about" pages. Although both FCP's came from the same disk, the one on the lap-top had up-graded itself. Once I upgraded the desk-top to match, everything was rosy.

Help! FCP won't open...

HELP!!!
I was editing using external fw800 drives for my scratch disks. Then a power hickup (I live in Italy) caused my battery backup to flick on and off causing an unintended eject of those drives. I linked the drives back up and shut down and restarted the computer. Now FCP won't open, other programs will. It loads the FCP intro screen, then no interface, back to finder. I've tried opening through my projects, then the program but to no avail....please help!!! My last resort will be reinstalling FCP, but I don't want to do that and lose my settings for my jog shuttle and magic bullet filters....thanks!

Use it to backup your Preferences (so you can restore them if this doesn’t work) then trash your Preferences.

Try:
Reset the iOS device (no data will be lost). Press and hold the Home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears. See if the problem persists after the device reboots (it might take a while).
Download any free app, and then see if any of the other apps, after being re-downloaded, will open.

New install and FCP won't open

Hello,
I am new to FCP. I come from a PC based Editor. After installation FFCP opened once. I closed it and now it won't open. When I attach my AG DV2500 deck it wants to start then just quits. Without the deck attached it says it can't locate the "Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480). Try again or click continue to set external device to none" Then Pof it's gone. How do I set my external device to none?
I have downloaded updates. No help

you might have corrupted your preferences ... how I don't know.
trashing them is always a good place to start when things go awry
also, backing up a good set, that you can revert to, is well worthwhile
there are a couple of utilities that make this quick and painless:
FCP Rescue
and FCP Attic

FCP won't open one of its own files.

Hi, everyone.
I have an fcp project that I need to update and modify. I tried opening it, and I got "File Error: Wrong Type". I read this previous post...

...and followed its suggestions. I quit fcp, and tried to open the file again (without the application already being opened). No luck.
Also as suggested, I saved the project file as a txt document, then change it back to an fcp document and open that. No luck again. I get "Unable to open project file".
These remedies worked for the original poster in the discussion, but they haven't worked for me. Anyone have any other ideas?
By the way, this project was created in 2006 on this computer that I'm still using, and with this version of FCP that I'm using -- so I can't fathom why it won't open.

FCP won't open - no error message

When I try to open FCP from the Dock the little light below the icon lights up for about a second and then nothing happens. When I try to open it from the Applications folder the icon will do it's "zoom" animation but still nothing happens. If I do cmdoptesc it doesn't show up but do cmd+i on the icon it says it was just opened.
I read I should delete my preferences, but I can't find any relating to FCP:
I downloaded Preference Manager and used it to delete FCP preferences but it still won't open.
Here are the basics of my computer:
osx 10.5.5
FCP 6.0.5
Caldigit HDPro 1.6
I realize I have old versions of everything but up until now it all worked.

Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on the system drive.
Restart, try FCP again, post your results.

Brand new macbook air won't open or save pdf's

FIles display pdf icon but it says it won't open "because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged and may be corrupted" etc. I then installed adobe reader and still get same issue, I've downloaded several pdf's from different sources (old macbook and web, stored files I know are not damaged)
I'm running mac osx 10.7.3
my java is SE 6 64/32 version 1.6.0._31-b04-415 if that makes any difference (read java could be a factor)
pdf's will open from the web in safari but won't save like normal "save as" menu would, it says
"The document “Test_File.pdf” could not be exported as “Test_File.pdf”."
very annoying issue as I use pdf's daily, any help greatly appreciated

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Downloaded new version now won't open!!

I downloaded the new version of Itunes tonight having just got hooked back up to broadband. However it now won't open at all saying there is a problem with audio configuration. It doesn't actually tell me what that problem is however and reinstalling does nothing. I don't want to have to remove and reinstall completely as I'd lose all the songs in my library!!
Is this my only option or does anyone have any ideas?

The previous version, is not deleted when Pages 5 is installed, just moved to Applications/iWork folder.
The icons on the dock remain.
Have you actually looked in your Applications folder for the new version?
Any documents created by Pages 5 need to be opened by Pages 5.

New post - GB won't open files

My original question asked about re-installing GB 11. I was able to do that, but the original problem still persists: GB 11 won't open any existing files, even if they were just created, saved, and closed. The error message is unhelpful: 'The document “My Song 3” could not be opened.' Nothing more, no error code, nothing. I've reinstalled GB 11, and updated it to 6.0.1. After that didn't work, I deleted the plist for it, so it would create a new one the next time I started up GB. That didn't work either.
So, I can create and save a project / file. But I can't open old or newly-saved files. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm having what sounds like a similar problem. Last night I was putting together a video and needed to modify an audio track to put with it. I opened garageband '11 and imported the song from iTunes, modified the track and then exported it to iTunes. I did this a couple times and then the third time when I exported it my speakers stopped working, all I'd get was a crackle. They wouldn't work with anything (iTunes, Internet, garageband...) so I shut down the projects restarted the computer and after the restart the speakers worked fine. Now when I open garageband I can choose a file type and create it but then it comes up with "The file couldn't be opened" message and that's all. The file shows up in the folder but it can't be opened. I did the repair permissions and I deleted the .plist and .cs file. After trying to open a new file again I checked and there was a new .plist file bit I couldn't find a .cs file, don't know if that important or not. I also tried garageband with a different user account and it worked fine there, but I would really like to get it working on my main user account again. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 7 - Downloaded new itunes and won't open

Just upgraded to the new itunes and every time I click on it, nothing happens. No errors, no issues, just won't open or anything. Even tried uninstalling old versions and now none of them will work?!

Hello and thanks so much for your quick reply. I am at a standstill, because I have done those things already and it has not worked. The repair install procedure seemed to take place quickly, but the same thing happened again when I tried to uninstall it the program after that.... It seems to proceed, then the progress bar goes backward, and there it still is!
When I downloaded the Microsoft Fixit program and asked it to uninstall the Apple Mobile device Support, it started but then got stuck and I had to shut my computer off, as it froze everything up!
I'm hoping you can help..... This seems to be a problem with the new version, and it's frustrating, because I can't use Itunes on my computer at all till we find a solution.
Perhaps if I try to restore my computer to before the Itunes 11.1.4 uodate?

Have you tried closing that app via the multitasking bar and seeing if it works when you re-open it ? Double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag that app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then you could try a soft-reset and see if it works when your phone has rebooted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.
A third option is to delete the app from your phone and redownload it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app.
If it still doesn't work then try contacting the developer.

FCP won't open after I tried to install trial software

I downloaded a trial copy of master perfection suite and another Bias product just to check it out. Now Final Cut Pro won't open - it brings up a box that gives me the option to authorize, continue etc, but when i do anything, the box just appears again. I have to Force Quit FCP since everything's grayed out. I've trashed prefs, repaired permissions, restarted but it hasn't helped.

Come on, you've been on the board long enough, You should know better. When you have a stable OS/Application combo, clone your startup drive. This way you can quickly restore your system to it's previous state.<<<</div>
Actually, I didn't know this. I'll have to look into how to do this.
I called Bias tech support - they were great. The suggestion to remove the files from the plugin folder was close - there was a 'components' folder in there as well that needed to go. Once that was removed, I restarted and FCP opened without a problem.
