New MBP i5 coming, what kind of improvement to expect from old MBP?

i got a 15" MBP in very late '07, 2.33 ghz core2duo, 2gb memory, 4m l2 cache, was a solid machine when i got it, now passing on to my sons to replace a nearly dead macbook...
i've ordered a 2010 mbp 15" 2.53ghz i5 with the high res antiglare, kept the drive at 5400rpm and not the fancy solid state (too expensive, would rather have the high res screen, and going from 5400 to 7200 on platters didn't seem dramatic enough)
in terms of using massive photo archives in iphoto, dvd creation in idvd, imovie along with all of the usual (lots of mail.app, tons of word/excel from msft), what kind of performance leap do you really think i can expect? will it be as dramatic as that 50-100 percent people imagine? or just "a lot better" - i know that it will look better because of the high res, i'm thinking more about app launch times, online video viewing (many tabs at once etc) and using photo/video intensive apps more...
also running windows 7 in a parallels vm so hoping for even more speed...
all thoughts welcome...

    Hi everyone. I both a Mac Pro 15" in March 2009. Five month ago I  was forced to buy by one new hard drive and extent the memory, because I had to make the upgrade (and pay) to install the new Lion operation system. Four days ago the Mother-board fails. To change it will cost a fortune. What should I do or expect from Apple to solve this problem? I am very disappointed because my trust on Apple was destroyed.

    I am not sure why you are upset with Apple. Electronics equipment does fail. If the product is out of warranty or you do not have AppleCare there's not much you can do with Apple. Apple will charge you for the repair. Suggest you look for a third party repair store since they are usually less expensive than Apple. Alternatively you can buy one for about $850US and install it yourself. Sorry, but there aren't many choices in this situation.

    i have a new iMac but having problems installing final cut express 4 from old macbook pro ?

    FCE was discontinued nearly 3 years ago and is no longer supported.
    I don't know whether it's possible to install it on Mavericks and if you do it may not perform properly.
    Final Cut pro X and iMovie are the only Apple apps that are supported.

  • What Performance increase should I expect from 3000+ to 3400+

    My sister is talking about upgrading her Machine, a PIII 1Ghz Machine. I told her All she would need is a new mobo/CPU an mem. I am thinking of perhaps buying a 3400+ and keeping it and setting her machine with my 3000+. What kind of percenteage increase should I see going to the 3400+? how about the 3700+? The 3700+ is a little pricey but if I can squeeze it by good, but most likely will be a 3400+

  • HP Laserjet 6MP: what do I need to save from old system?

    I recently moved from a G3 iMac running 10.2 to a G5 running 10.4. I have a great old HP Laserjet 6MP. Right now, my system is successfully printing (through an AsanteTalk box that goes from the printer to the Appletalk slot). It was able to find my printer, showing the name "Buster," a name which I had chosen a long time ago when I was on System 9. The only place where the name "Buster" appears in my files is on two ppd files on my external nonbootable backup disk, in the old "System Folder." One is in the Printer Preferences and the other in the Extensions in this old System Folder. I have several questions:
    1. Are these two files named Buster essential to my system being able to find my printer? I'm surprised that the system would have found the printer in the backup disk rather than through a newer driver on the current system.
    2. If the Buster files are essential, where should I put them on my current system? (I'd like to be able to remove the old system files from the external backup drive eventually.) Or do I just need to keep them where they are, on the backup disk?
    3. I've noticed there is an HP Laserjet 6MP driver on the new system. Would my system be able to find my printer with just this driver?
    4. Is there any danger of my system not being able to find the printer if I move these "Buster" ppds to a different folder on the backup disk?
    Thanks,
    Donna

    You should be able to use the printer independent of old system
    folders created in another computer at a different time. Perhaps
    the AppleTalk connection is why this old information comes up;
    presumably you are still using the printer via AppleTalk, and so
    that configuration must be running under Classic in OS X 10.4.
    The OS X 10.4.x Tiger system probably has excellent drivers;
    but you could use Gimp prints, too.
    Did you use the Migration Assistant to move from the old Mac
    to the newer one? If so, it copied over stuff; and any old alias
    or links to sources no longer available to the computer would
    be null and void, unless or until some other drive with old info
    relative to this were available.
    I'd change all that; and re-think the need to use AppleTalk,
    unless you have other hardware or needs only fulfilled with it.
    You should be able to get a good driver for the printer as a
    download, something newer than the printer's old one. The
    Gimp Print or gutenprint open source page has free drivers.
    There probably is something there to update the old printer.
    You may be able to move the printer driver from one system
    into another; but not sure how compatible that bit of old data
    would be in a newer OS X 10.4 system.
    Gutenprint - Gimp print:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
    Gutenprint supported printers lists your model:
    http://gutenprint.sourceforge.net/pSupportedPrinters.php3
    I'm not sure about the rest of this question; in that the need
    for the configuration as it was has not been established as
    a single and valid way to go. You should be able to get newer
    drivers and consider other means to use the printer outside
    of AppleTalk, if necessary. There should be no need for the
    old system parts, if you can get a newer, better driver; etc.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Livecycle: Is there a way to add a new page by choosing what kind of page from a drop down menu

    I am creating a form to be used for patient care,
    I have multiple pages, the first is an information page, second is an evaluation page, the third is a treatment page.
    I am hoping to add a drop down menu (Add New Page) with the following in it:
    1. Treatment Note
    2. Discharge Summary
    3. Treatment Order
    4. Progress Note
    Each of the selections corresponds to a specific page layout.
         ie:  1.  Vitals, signature, etc.
               2. Previous information compared to current status
              3.  Ordering equipment etc.
              4. Updating referral source.
    I am new to this so any help is appreciated, assume I know very little to begin with so specifics on how to create your recommendations are greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    The attached contains a drop-down that sets focus on a text field on the applicable page. The effect is to navigate to the page. The exit event looks like this...
    //form1.page1.subform1.pageSelection::exit - (JavaScript, client)
    switch (this.rawValue) {
    case "Treatment Note":
       xfa.host.setFocus(form1.page2.subform1.someField);
       break;
    case "Discharge Summary":
       xfa.host.setFocus(form1.page3.subform1.someField);
       break;
    case "Treatment Order":
       xfa.host.setFocus(form1.page4.subform1.someField);
       break;
    case "Progress Note":
       xfa.host.setFocus(form1.page5.subform1.someField);
       break;
    default:
       break;
    There are a variety of ways this could be accomplished.

  • What kind of problems are expected with an I Mac?

    what are the major problems associated with the hardware of I Mac? I am planning to buy an I Mac. please give advice.

    One of the biggest problems is that Apple, compared to Microsoft, discontinues support for an OS very quickly. E.g., Lion is supported right now, but once Mountain Lion is out quite soon, plus one more version a year after that -- Apple has gone to yearly upgrades -- no more security patches. That means, security-wise, you will be on your own and left to the wolves if you choose not to or can't upgrade. You may be quite content with your current OS and not want the "improvements" included in a succeeding one.
    In addition, Apple appears intent on locking up the Mac ecosystem/third party applications in a walled garden, the walls of which are growing higher all the time. The App Store, with most "apps," not Applications, at $10 a pop will discourage developers investing any serious time or money in developing programs. Serious support for the Desktop computer, which is being turned into an iOS like environment, is on the way out. It's a race to the bottom.
    Gatekeeper, which will appear with the release of Mountain Lion, will not assure any more safety, since Apple will never fully vet the code in all programs it give its seal of safety to. It will only create the illusion of safety. It will just raise the walls of that walled in garden so much higher, with no real benefit to users and it will discourage many serious developers.

  • New mac pro has not enough disk space to install from old mac pro

    So, I bought the new shiny black cylinder Mac pro, but it comes with just 250gb flash memory, not enough to install the 600gb+ I have on my older MacPro hard drive.  I backed up with time machine to my G-RAID, but during install it could not find the backup.  (At least I think it couldn't. It said it found one on the G-Raid but that it was last backed up in 2010!)  So I attached my older MacPro in terminal mode and tried to install from there.  Not enough space to install my User folder.  So now I am installing Applications only.  This is going to be a major pain in the neck, I fear.  Why did Apple do this to us?  Don't they realize there have been folks like me who have bought just about every machine since the Apple II+ and have accumulated a ton of data?  Sure, a 250gb flash memory drive is going to be faster and easier for Apple to manage, but why not give us a way to downsize without having to manually figure out what to do with our iphoto and macmail libraries?  Has anyone else gone through this and come up with a good solution?

  • Installing PSE 11 on new computer.  How do I bring PSE 10 organizer from old computer?

    I purchased a new laptop.  Yay me!  I want to install PSE 11 on the new computer.  I have PSE 10 on my old computer.  How do I bring the organizer for PSE 10 to the new computer without installing PSE 10 on the new computer?
    Thanks for any help!

    What you need to transfer is the catalog, not the program.
    The correct way to transfer it is to create a backup from your old computer on an external media (external USB drive for instance). That will save your catalog and the catalogued picture files in a format that PSE11 can read to restore both pictures and catalog on the new PC.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
    You have to run the backup from the old computer and the restore from the new one. In a first stage, all your pictures will be recovered on your new PC, then the PSE10 catalog will be converted to the PSE11 format automatically.

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

    Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

    Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
    Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
    You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
    I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
    Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • Got a new i Pod Touch and want to transfer all music from old Touch.

    Bought my son a new iPod Touch for Chistmas (8 g version) and we want to get all his music off his old Touch onto the new one. How do we do that?

    OK here's how.
    Sync the older iPod to iTunes using his computer with his account logged in(if he has one)
    After that, sync the new iPod into that iTunes account. After doing the set up of the iPod in iTunes, you select set up from the backup of xxx-your sons iPod name.  Then its done!
    Or, you can set up the device directly on the iPod itself and enter his Apple ID.
