New MBP Issues

It sometimes does not wake up after sleep mode, battery drains and crazy hot when its in the bag.
Plus, the movie players like 'VLC' are intermittent when I switch to full screen mode while playing dvix.

Ditto-
Happened twice in the past week... won't wake up after being put to sleep
Continues to cook when put in briefcase
Haven't seen any viable workarounds or alternatives

  • New MBP issues with certain games

I have a new post Feb 08 MBP. I have bought the Diablo and Starcraft Battle Chests, Fallout, Fallout 2, and Knights and Merchants. I have issues with all of them and these issues cannot be duplicated by owners of pre Feb 08 MBPs.
The Diablo and Starcraft issue has been recognized by Blizzard and they are working with Apple:
    http://www.battle.net/forums/thread.aspx?FN=support&T=535843&P=1
Reports to MacPlay about Knights and Merchants, Fallout and Fallout 2 have gone unanswered.
Can any other new MBP owners confirm the Fallout or K&M issue?
With Fallout I and II I have obvious graphical issues with the palette. K&M loads but I only get sounds, no window at all.
If you have issues with Diablo II and Starcraft please post on the battle.net site above. Thanks!

    Hello all,
This seems to be a problem! I wonder if it will be similar with the new iMacs that are coming out with this new processor!
So yeah, when I load up Fallout 2 on my new Macbook Pro I get the weird graphics palette and on only one half of the screen. Seems a little phishy to me! I don't even know if there is a patch that could help! It SHOULD be solved my Rosetta or something . . . but if the new Pentyn architecture is faulty, it would have to be a recall, not a patch!
Makes me a little nervous to tell you the truth!

  • Transfer Time Machine to new MBP issues.

    Hey,
Quick question, I have a Time Machine backup that has locked the files and I can not transfer them to my MBP through migration assistant. Any advice on how I can easily transfer a time machine backup for an old mac to my new one. Thanks in advance!

Time Capsule only has USB 2.0 if that is what your using to retreive information with time machine.
so if that is what you are using, ethernet would be faster than USB 2.0

  • Should I buy a new MBP?  (Lots of small issues with mine)

    Hi,
There are a number of small but irritating problems with my MBP. Talking with a friend who has had her macbook into apple service 3 times now for replacements a lot more serious than my problems, I'm sure Apple won't replace the computer. A friend who has bought a couple MBPs now (later week version) has had very little problem with his.
Specifically, the issues I'm having are as follows:
    1) CPU whine (I know this can't be fixed)
    2) Fan "moo"/clunk. The computer sounds like a small helicopter at times and at the best of times is always noisy..
    3) Heat issues - using the comp anywhere but on a flat surface (i.e. on my lap) and it heats up intensely. I know this is an issue with all computers, but compared to my powerbook it's night and day.
    4) Lag Issues. Doing ANYTHING takes a "long" time. I need to reformat but from opening firefox to booting up the computer or even sometimes mousing over the icon tray.
    5) Red headphone led. My internal speakers no longer work. I've read the problem has something to do with the headphone jack being stuck. Some fixes I've read include using a match stick, plugging in the headphones again (doesn't work).
    6) My display flickers slightly now also. Seems to synch with the fan "moo"ing.
I'm using macintosh now because I like avoiding hassles. I switched from PC a few years ago after going through lots of issues and the powerbook was AWESOME. I'm assuming the macbookpro is going to eventually stabilize and work well also, is it there yet? Shall I buy a new one and just dump the current or will it be the same thing all over?
    Macbook Pro / 12" Powerbook Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks for all the advice, it's appreciated. Particularly the advice to go down to the mac store and talk to a guru. I'm going to do that tomorrow.
I've been able to tolerate things up until the latest bug, the fan now periodically starts spinning like a helicopter. It's way beyond anything I've dealt with.. I can't listen to music it's so loud and it disturbs anyone else around (clearly needs a fix).
I can't send it in to be repaired as I can't do without a computer for that long. This said I thought to connect the new and old machine and copy the most important files over.
(No I won't dump this lemon on someone else without letting them know about the issues. It may well be worthwhile to someone willing to nurse it through the various mac warranty & update issues. Eventually they may well end up with a new MBP).

  • Any Bootcamp issues with the new MBP? What about right clicking?

Tried out the new MBP at the Apple store... was wondering how Bootcamp would work with it. I use Bootcamp all the time for work so I'm interested to here the pro's and con's for the new models. Seems like the new trackpad clicking would be cause issues with the "two-finger click" in Bootcamp.

    Right clicking issues galore!
(at least in the windows side of things...)
    The 64bit windows worked fine....
The 32bit windows had many issues, even after 2 attempts. (via boot camp)
The main issue: the functions keys are locked on. Normally, I would hold down "fn" and push "f10" to mute but that doesn't work. All I have to do is hit "f10" and its muted. That is all good until I have to right-click using the "shift+f10" method since the bottom-right-of-trackpad and two-finger-clicking doesn't work whatsover. The "shift+f10" method won't work now since the fn keys are locked on. We have NO IDEA what the problem is. Could it be a driver issue...though it works fine with x64bit and OS X side of things.
Oh, and mac doesn't give support if one installs Vista and Microsoft won't give support since it isn't on a 'native' pc, so we are screwed. They have both protected themselves and blamed it on the other and the customer is left out to dry.

  • New MBP = Goofy Display Wake + Keyboard Issues???

I would like to know if anyone has had the time to try a new MBP out to see if the new Intel Chipset helps with any of the issues that the last MBP's have.
Mainly, if the new chipset fixes some of the wake issues that people have been having, or the keyboard issues where the first character is missed when typing.
Has anyone had a chance to test this out yet?
(I realize that I am jumping the gun a little, but I am really curious)

Do the new (Feb 2008) Macbook Pro models have embedded numeric keypads, along with home/end/page (up/down) arrow-key labels? Have the numeric keypads and arrow-labels been removed, as has recently happened to the Macbook line? Apple's "Design" page for the Feb. 2008 Pro doesn't give a clear answer -- it has some photos of Pro keyboards that include an embedded keypad and home/end/page (up,down) labels, but also includes several photos of Pro keyboards without these.
If the embedded keypad is indeed gone: _poor move, Apple_.
PLEASE put this back on the Pro machines, and soon!
Here's why: Actual "pros" (e.g. advanced tech- oriented users) are much more likely to require the numeric keypad for a range of uses, both in much OS X software (from advanced image and video software to Apple's own keypad mouse control) plus in the Boot Camp world of PC software including non-intuitive PC-style 3-digit alt-character entry. Heck, embedded keypad could have even then been pointed to as a newly differentiating feature of the Macbook Pro line.
There can of course be some software remedy -- but hardware change is the only way to really restore to easiest use, getting the symbols on the keyboard caps. Users should not be expected to memorize these; the embedded keypad may go unused by a user for a straight year, but then need to use OS X or PC software for which the numeric keypad is the only way to perform certain functions.
    Apple: can you
    1) Put back numeric keypad and arrow-key labels

  • New MBP wifi connectivity issues

Recently bought a new MBP about 2-3 months ago and I've noticed almost the entire time I've had it I have always had issues with the wifi constantly timing itself out. I know for a fact that this is not related to my router or ISP as I have other computers on the same network that don't run into these issues. This computer has also been tested with the same results on other wifi connections. I am currently using OS X 10.8.2 on a 15in, mid 2012 model. This issue is very frustrating. I notice this issue during everything I do from Online computer games (WoW) where the connection will just drop to basic web page browsing such as navagating to this page which was a task in itself. I constantly have to turn the wifi off and back on again to refresh the connection and to load web pages.

    Same problem, no solution yet!

  • Have any heat issues been fixed in the new MBPs

I'm interseted in buying a new MBP. Does anyone know if any of the heat issues been fixed in the latest MBPs? And are the GPU's still underclocked?

Nicolas, I've got a week 12 MBP and have never considered it to have a heat problem.
Just made another 15 minute run of System Load with both CPUs at 100%. The CPU temp momentarily hit 78 C, then the fans kicked in (quietly) and the temperature stabilized at 73 C.
The current CPU temperature is 51 C, which is normal for routine writing, Web browsing and downloading to my database. When I'm doing database work that frequently but for only brief bursts pegs the CPUs, the temps run in the high 50s to low 60s C. On battery power, the temps drop several degrees C.
The computer remains comfortable to use at all times. Note: I use it on an aluminum tilt stand, whether on my desk or in my lap.
Haven't done the "grease fix" and don't plan to.

  • Can't transfer old mac contents to new MBP C2D- Firewire issue?

I started my shiny new MBP and went through the usual stuff, until it asked me to boot my old Powerbook G4 (800mHz) in target mode. The setup program did not detect anything via the FW400 cable.
I went ahead anyway and tried to open it from target mode in the finder, but it does not detect it either.
In Network preferences;Network Port Configurations, the option "Built-in Firewire" is greyed out. What does that mean?
Is there something I am missing? Anyone else having issues with firewire?
    thanks
    Mikka

I am having a similar problem. The only difference is a Firewire icon shows up on my desk top and I can never open it.

  • My very new MBP 13" freezes. Not a software issue.

    Hey,
My brand new MBP (Lion) has a great time for a while, but then freezes with three alarms sounding.    (see pic - I also have video if people want to see.)
The Apple Care people "have not heard of such a thing", have been very helpful, but believing it to be a software compatibility problem, have given me some assorted solutions to try.  They mean well.
I run Adobe CS5.5, Filemaker Pro 11, Microsoft Office 2011 and Firefox.
I have deleted StartUp items, (same result), in fact, almost every day I have had the computer home, this has happened.
I have backed up with Time Machine and erased the entire HD, downloaded and clean installed Lion.   Three and a bit Gig later, the same thing has happened, with no software installed except the Lion system software.
This is clearly NOT a software issue and I need a solution very soon.  My company purchased this interstate.

That's the strange thing.   Trying to run the Apple Hardware Test after a reboot with 'D' pressed and it ignores the request.
Solution found.    It was bad RAM chips.
Chadstone Apple Store in Melbourne replaced the chips and turned it around for me in under 20 minutes.
Very impressed.   Running like a trooper now.   Thanks Apple.  Confidence restored.

  • Help!  Brand new MBP and Mid '04 23" Cinema Display cable issue!

Just got a new MBP, and I can't figure out which adapter I need to use my trusty 23" display. The mini display port to dual-link DVI adapter doesn't look right, and I already know the mini display port to DVI adapter doesn't work.
Will the dual-link version work? If not, what do I do?
    Thank you kindly in advance!

  • Time machine issues after migrating to a new MBP

I just migrated to a MacBok Pro (new, late 2008) 2.4 GHZ with 4 GB RAM. I backed up my older iMac and then during an erase and install, i chose to use the time machine to migrate my data from the installation process. Everything went well and it all migrated over, but when I turned on TM, it failed. I also noticed that the MBP was now named iMac (2). I guess the name transfered over as well. I am not so concerned about this and can change the name in the Sharing Prefs, but it will not pick up where the last TM back up ended. It wants to create a new back up folder and re-back everything up again.....eats into my storage...
Can this be fixed? Can I just continue on where TM last left off?
    Thanks.
I did go through and repair permissions, ran the daily/weekly scrips, etc....

Yep, I found that out this AM when I called support. I also sent feedback to Apple RE this. It really should be able to merge and pick up where it left off.....
Other than forcing me to really look at all the crap on my mac (a good thing), I am loving the new MBP.

  • New MBP - wireless/internet access networking problem - a summary!

    Greetings!
New MBP here, with all the trimmings (MacOS X 10.4.10 - Safari 3 Beta). New also to the Apple/MAC world
MBP >> wireless networking into a Linksys WRT54G router and >> thru HughesNet DW7000 Satellite Internet connection (not the fastest, but hey, the US and especially rural areas are NOT S. Korea when it comes to speedy internet connections!
Frankly, I bought into it for two reasons: First, hearing about the vaunted Mac a/v/ and doc/photo editing capabilities,... and about MacOS stability, etc... Well, it all needs a little work still: on the part of new users like me, but also probably on the part of the Apple/Mac people as well. 2nd reason I decided to purchase the MBP - i.e. ability to run Windows (I have not yet tried BootCanp, etc...: still resolving preliminary issues!). I still live in a heavy Win environment at my business - no other way of course!
Communications issues seem to still prevail: I am hanging out at several VERY HELPFUL forums (AppleDiscussionForum, MacRumorsForums, etc...) and the same issues keep popping up. Im my case, same as all above reported, with a few additional points, as follows:
    1. Xmission errors: seem to be - at least in my case - a constant factor, regardless on how close/far i am from my wireless router. For example, I would be attempting to dwnload an upgrade (large)QT or MacOS file. i am barely into the dowmoad, and I already have several Read/Send errors. By the end of the download, I will have probably about 15 Rcv and 5 Send errors. Never gets quite that bad in my Win machines, I must mention. Anything to do here (I know, there are such things always affecting wireless com). AND, MOST importantly, how that this affect the effectiveness of the upgrade (I spotted same thing with MacOS 10.4.10 and Safari Beta 3 upgrade downloads!). Would it be likely that applying upgrades in such circumstances would screw up the OS??? Could OTOH such errors be automatically "compensated" by re-xmits from the source, and eventually the download would be OK? Because quite frankly, I do NOT know if my important upgrade download was OK to apply to the system, given those errors!!!
Also same thing with PING errors. Quite frequent when pinging another device on my network.
    2. Quite often, accessing a site will proceed somehow OK, and then things will get stuck twd the end, as if some buffer somewhere gets overloaded??? Of course, as elsewhere reported, same can often happen with com getting stuck right over the "www" part of the URL!
    3. AND, of course, the often reported "NO connection to the Internet", but computer shows good signal level and connection otherwise.
    4. Strangely enough, seems that the Airport Extreme wifi card sort of "warms up the the internet" as one proceeds to start using it. It eventually picks up on a network, and often "improves" its connection over time!
    5. Built in Airport Extreme seems to not exhibit up all immediately surrounding networks. Sensitivity issue?? iStumbler does.
    6. iStumbler permanently posts noise level of 9% regardless of how close to my wireless router/broadband modem I am. Anyone uses iStumbler to monitor network traffic?
This is getting longuish: I just want to get over all those p*ant issues and get into putting my a/v stuff together!!
    - Roger T
Thanks for just reading all this!. I am not sure it is all fixable (back to the Win "features" terminology, really meaning "bugs"??)

Thanks, BDaqua. This support forum is quite well stocked: I have been perusing all its nooks and cranies!
On the www.dslreports.com - All things Mac - forum, I spotted a couple of mentions of the following type of infromation:
    link: »www.hardmac.com/news/2007-07-27/#7039
    - The first TechNote provides information concerning the Airport problem affecting the MBP Santa Rosa (but also other Mac Intel). When used on battery, the wireless connection drops and one can even experience kernel panic. Apple Centers are asked not to exchange affected notebook as this is due to a unidentified bug in the Atheros driver, and should be fixed in the future with a simple Airport system update. So for the moment, unfortunate users are asked to directly power their notebook when using wireless network, or using Ethernet connection when running on battery... in other words, turn your notebook into a desktop

I am wondering if you and folks on this close-to-Apple forum know anything about this. At least, we could just await remedy instead of messing around endlessly looking for solutions and... pondering as to whether it was a wise thing to purchase an expensive machine which happens to have trouble communicating online. After all, seems that the Mac folks are prone to spend MORE time online uploading/downloading music and videos instead of my being normally doing with the rest of my (Win) computers, i.e. work on customer lists, correspondence, inventories, accounting, data bases, etc....
So, seems to me we do have a pb and Apple might just save a few $$$ on silly ads and get to work on com instead. if nothing else to avoid the appearance of further - admittedly rather funny - ad-spoofs!
So back to your further inquiry. I run a wireless network from a HughesNet satellite modem, thru a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, into some nearby office LANed desktops and point of sale equipment, to another neighbouring facility via wireless bridge, and to my Mac laptop. Distance from the laptop to the router: 50 ft max.
It all works surprizingly very well: up to 200kbps up and 1000 kbps down (in prime time, 150 up and 600 down). OK, my set up looks complex and incurring LOTS of activity. Actually, online activity is quite minimal and well scheduled - right now I am the only machine on the network online. Otherwise, our office processes online money wiring for customers among other things.
I'll try your DNS server choice on the Mac settings first. Will report accordingly.
    Thanks for everything!

  • New MBP and memory

It's been 5 yrs since my last laptop, so ready to get the new MBP. One question. 4G memory is quite a hit through Apple, but there are vendors out there ( eg Crucial) that charge about 1/2 that amount. Some time ago, Apple lowered it's price on memory to compete with other vendors. I am wondering if Apple's memory is different ( from the Website of the 3rd party vendors, it does not seem so). Any comments as to why not get 2G, update to 4 and sell memory that comes with Apple? Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to upgrade to the 7200rpm hard drive?
Yes it is although as the drive in the MBP is not listed as a "user replaceable part" you will technically void your warranty by doing so. A better option is seeing if you can find an authorised Apple service centre to do it for you so that warranty is compromised.
Would this newer model make any difference in my life?
Are you referring to the drive or the whole computer? If you mean just the drive I wouldn't think so (when comparing like sizes - 160GB).
As for the computer as a whole, the fact that it supports 4GB (and assuming you go for 4GB) and has a superior GPU are, to me at least, compelling reasons to upgrade if you make money from your MBP. Especially when you consider the requirement of FCS. Having said that, if this is the case the you should be able to just as easily justify the cost of going to a Mac Pro (which is the way I went resulting in allow me to opt for a lower MBP than otherwise) which is substantially better.
What you need to do is decide whether the cost of making the upgrade justifies the incremental gains made by replacing your system.
PS Next time, unless your issues match or very closely match that of the original post it's better to start your own thread. Or better still, find a matching thread that suits your question(s).

  • My new MBP is really messed up and I am wondering what I should do.

(sorry for the mess of a post. I just had the good news of having brain cancer and they put this dressing all over my entire head I can barely see, but I want to post this, so I am going to give it a shot.)
I went to see a genius at the local apple store. After spending 1 hour trying to fix all the software and hardware issues, he went to the back of the store, came back and said we are getting you a new MBP with all the equivalant upgrades you had with the other one (the one that had all the problems). I received the new MBP, the same genius said if I leave my old MBP with him he will transfer all the data over and call me when it is done. I got the new MBP, have had it for about 3 weeks and there are more problems than ever. I have no idea what this would do to a new computer but the genius transfered all my data/files/settings over to my new MBP and he did this before or without fixing all the software problems I was having on the computer he transfered my date from.
Now my software updates... is not working. I read the article, trashed 3 apple.softwareupdates.com preferences wit no help. I find out that he said after I asked about iLife; "yes you will get iLife, all Apple computers come with iLife. There is no iLife 09 just my old iLife 08. When I spotlight iLife 09, no iLife comes up only in emails. It does not even pick up my old 08iLife that is in a folder which was transfered over from my old computer.
The manager at the apple store said to install iLife09 from the gray disk. However, for some reason the new updates my computer needs are not triggering the software updater telling me there are new updates. It looks like the genius did an update before I picked it up and it updated one security issue, but no iTunes 9/1/1 or any other updates I should have received when I look at all the recent MBP update (Apple updates only) list.
When I do go to look at the current updates for this computer it brings me to an Apple website that has all my old updates from the old MBP and in a Finder file it shows all the updates from the old computer and just the one that the genius updated for me.
Does any body have any idea what I should do? It is frustrating. I would like to just start from the beginning with the new computer, wipe everything off and install it all new and get rid of all the stuff from my old MBP that was transfered to my new MBP.
    Thank for any help.

I would wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. The only thing I would save from the old comp are documents, movies and music also make sure you have any passwords or mail that you need to keep. I would avoid Time Machine and just do a normal backup. Boot from the installer and go to disk utilities in the menu and erase the hard drive. When that is done do a custom install and avoid any demos and software you don't use. Install QuickTime 7 from the optional installs.
Then manually download and install the OS updates before installing any third party apps avoiding the combos. Depending on your install OS version you may not need all those below.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1061update.htm l
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062update.htm l
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1018
When you are done run software update and install the security updates only. When you are done with those you can install whatever application updaters there are and then move on to installing your third party apps.
Hope everything works out for you.
