New MBP: Opitcal drive mechanical noise when starting up?

Subject says it all. Anyone experienced this?
I own a Powerbook and it never does that, at least not that loudly. Anyone notice?

See this kbase article for some example of normal optical drive noises:

To my knowledge, there's been no news at the WWDC about MBPs.
If Apple haven't made an official announcement, no one on here will know. This is just a user forum, there's no insider information here.

  • Weird noise when starting up Macbook Pro

    Hi there,
When i start up my MBP, I hear a weird noise that wasn't there before. It sounds like a CD changer changing CD's. I checked and there is no CD in the CD drive. I don't know if it is an HD problem or the CD drive problem. I ran a hardware test and there were no problems found. Here is a video of the noise:

Please give any advice you can. It is making me worried so please let me know. I will take it to the Apple store if this is an issue. But it might have always been there, I just never paid attention to it.

The rep said it was normal? Apple support said it wasn't so hopefully they will swap it for a Hitachi. Hitachi drives don't make that noise right?
I will pass that to eliaz for his input as he had a new MBP also, but from history Hitachi is quieter.
Sound issue aside. What is really important to look out for is that all these drives are slot loading and dust will come into the drive opening very easy. Typical case is that you will loose dual layer dvd burning capability and get bad burns. Solution is to invest in a cleaning disc. If that does not work then it's an exchange of the drive that is needed.

  • Buying a new MBP - hard drive repacement questions...

Does replacing the HD in a new MBP void the warranty? I've searched the forums but it seems there's no firm answer. Basically if I buy a new 13" I want to upgrade the HD (I Think) to the 500GB 7200 Drive (probably Seagate momentus), but I'm concerned about heat and noise issues. is there a huge performance boost between the offered 500 GB 5400 Drive? I am planing on buying the $1400 version so I get the 4GB RAM and the faster processor to start with. Is that worth the price? What about battery life - I'm concerned now that it's not replaceable that a 7200 drive would waste that battery too quickly.

Go with 500 GB, the Seagate is fine. The 7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm will give a modest performance boost, and there is really minimal additional heat, noise and power consumption with a faster spinning drive (it might mean 10 minutes shorter run time of the 5-7 hours from a full battery charge).
Be sure to order the drive without the G-force protection. The MBP has it's own internal accelerometer, and the two may conflict, so get the drive that lacks that feature.
Instructions for DIY HDD swap are on p. 37 of the manual:

  • Optical drive making noise when waking from sleep

    Hello everyone.
I recieved my MacBook about three weeks ago, and haven't had any problems with it. Hope I never will have.
One thing that bothers me, however, is that when it wakes from sleep, the DVD-drive makes a noise - as if trying to read a disc that isn't there. The drive is empty.
This is beginning to get annoying, as I often use my Macbook in small classrooms, where being quiet is a virtue.
You have any idea what I can do to stop this madness? Hopefully it can be solved via. software, but what say you?
    Macbook 13" White   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB

It's normal. I believe the reason why it happens is that most drives, by default, when they have power applied to them, they start scanning to see if a disk is inserted. By this time (machine turns on), the OS or the drivers are not loaded to tell the unit NOT to scan, therefore it happens. Now if the OS or the drivers are loaded they could probably prevent it from doing that. Obviously that's only when the OS is already running and thus the machine is already on.
Luckily it's only once, but these kinds of issues have a long history to them... For example, back in the Amiga days, the machine would do automatic detection of floppy disks, and the way it did it was by moving the heads to a negative track, which would cause a click every second or so. Extremely smart of the engineers, because the drive wasn't supposed to support such functionality. At the same time it was extremely annoying to have the click happen! Finally some guys wrote some software to fix that, before too many people went insane from the clicking
Luckily our superdrives don't do something like that every second

  • Optical Drive makes noise when waking from sleep

When I open my MBP it sounds like it is loading a CD.  Just anoying when your trying to be quite in a quite room.

Not sure. I have a late 2011 and I can't say where mine does it or not. But with newer system Apple changed how the EFI sets up the hardware and Sleep mode can go into the Deep Sleep Hibernate mode which is basically shutting the system down and writing the contents of RAM to the hard drive. Then when it is woken it read that data from the HDD back into RAM. With that is also might do a more thorough check of the hardware.

  • MBP Optical Drive / HD Noise

Hello, my MacBook Pro seems to be making a low pitched helicopter/car engine running noise , it comes from the right corner (below the palm rest area)
Im quite sure it is the optical drive because today for the first time since having the computer i burned a DVD.
Now every 10minutes or so the noise will start (for no reason) and this 'helicopter spinning' noise will continue for about another 2minutes and then stop again.
I think have heard the 'moo' sound described before on these forums, and i am sure this is different.
Has anyone had this problem? The noise is very loud and interferes with my work (my MBP whines but it is very quiet, this is much louder)
I am in the process of talking to Apple support, but if anyone on here has any help please do reply.
MacBook Pro 15" 1.83Ghz 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Latest Firmware - Burnt many CD's before, but this issue seems to have come from burning a DVD

I am still having this issue, and i have posted a recording of the noise.
Please go to: http://www.phantomfiles.co.uk/macbookpronoise.mp3 to hear my recording.
(You may need to turn your volume up, as the recording level isnt a good quality, but the actual noise is quite loud)
Your advise on this would be much appreciated

  • How do I import my library from an external disk to my new MBP hard drive?

My old MBP was running out of space so I exported my Aperture library (250GB) to an external drive.  I just replaced my old computer with a new MBP with a 1TB flash drive.  Now that I have the space, I want to put my library back on my computer but I can't figure out how bring it in from my external hard drive.  Any ideas?  Many thanks.

Why do you say " I exported my Aperture library"? Did you actually use "File > Export > Items as new Library" in Aperture to create a new library on your external drive? A simple drag and drop of the library should have sufficed. What is your Aperture version?

Connect your external drive and use the Finder to drag the Aperture library from the external drive back to the Pictures folder.
Then double-click the library to point Aperture to the new location and open the copied library in Aperture.
If your Aperture library uses referenced originals, select the referenced images and use the command File > Consolidate originals"  to move the originals back to your internal disk.
If you should encounter any error messages (like error -36) while moving the library to the internal drive, post back.

  • Cracking noise when starting up MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
Today I noticed a strange problem concerning my MacBook Pro Retina mid 2012. When starting up, a strange crackling noise appears from I think around the left speaker. The noise appears before the white loading screen of OSX. After starting up, the machine works fine. Anyone got an idea where this is coming from and if I should take the machine to the Apple store?
    With kind regards,
    Jesse

    Take it in for testing/diagnosis.

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.

  • My new MacBookPro makes a low grinding noise when starting from shutdown. It interferes with the normal startup music. Is this normal or should I take it back to the store, please? Thank you. Colin.

My MacBookPro makes a low grinding sound when it starts up from shutdown. Is this normal or should I return it to the store. The sound is not unlike the CD drive starting in my old computer. It kind of creeks. Thank you. Colin.

If it is a brief sound, perhaps a half second in duration, it may very well be the OS checking the internal optical drive.  That is part of the OS startup process which is normal.  Start your MBP and put your ear next to the optical drive and see if this is the case.

  • New WD 500gb drive clicking noise

    Hi
I've just installed a new 500gb WD Scorpio Blue drive into my MBP. It sometimes make two large metalic clicking sounds - possibly the heads moving? It mostly happens when I start it up or when I use it after it's been in idle for a few minutes. Maybe when the head is being parked / unparked?
I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the drive or if the cause related to the [this link|http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=1414&p_created=1138984716&p_sid=HcHRsgj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=8&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dy aWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTAsMTAmcF9wcm9kcz0yMjcsMTk0JnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY9Mi4xOTQm cF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9mbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4 dD1jbGlja2luZyBzb3VuZA*&p_li=&ptopview=1
If it is related to the link, how would I go about creating a dos boot disk for the mac to run the utility mentioned?
    Thanks

I am experiencing the clicking problem with a brand new WD Scorpio 2.5 inch 500GB hard drive in my MacBook Pro.
The problem has persisted after turning of the Sudden Motion Sensor and after running disk repair utility.
I have contacted WD tech support.
So far, their responses have been unhelpful in solving the problem.
Perhaps if other users also report the problem (i.e., strength in numbers), WD finally will justify looking into developing a Mac appropriate fix.

  • Optical drive makes noises when waking up

Every time I turn the machine on or wake it up from sleep, the optical drives lets out a little whine, as if checking if there's a CD in the drive. I find that very disturbing. Is there a solution?

    Dushkin,
its normal behavior-basically, as you said, the OS
checking to see if there is a disc in the drive when
it starts or wakes up. What I find more annoying is
accidentally hitting the eject key all the time and
    hearing the same noise.
ugh the mis-hitting the eject button drives me nuts. cuse i do it so often when going to hit delete while typing. sometimes it doesnt even make the eject sound(if ive already hit it a number of times i think it knows there is no disk to eject)
im still looking for a software program that can disable the eject button on the keyboard, but obviously dont want to do irrepairable harm to my computer so it looks like i will just deal with the mis-hits

  • MBP 13": single clicking noise when cooling down

Hello, I noticed that every time when my 2011 MBP cools down, say, after playing a game or other processor/graphics-intensive tasks, a single clicking noise is emitted (roughly) from the area around the left side of the keyboard. Is this a build quality issue? Should I be concerned? Thanks in advance.

Well, I found out the solution to this problem. My 3 month ago MBP had the internal hard drive die on it. I took my MBP to the Mac Genius and he tested it a number of different ways. The HD was bad. I really needed my MBP for a business trip the next week so I bought the ProCare card to ensure that my MBP would be fixed in time. It was ready three days later. No problems since!
