New MBP--options for more HD space

Hello,
I am the new (and happy) owner of a 17" MBP. I successfully transferred all of my files to the MBP, which has left my MBP HD with 33 gb. I would like to store my photos and music on another HD to free up space. I have a 800mHz g4 QS with 60 and 120gb ata HDs. Should I set up the G4 a server and store my photos and music on the 120gb HD or is it better to remove the HD and use it as an external drive (in a firewire enclosure)? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
PS. How would I set up the g4 as a server? Would this set up work?
powermac g4 800mHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Considering the reliability of external drives for anything other than backups and temporary storage, I'd increase your internal hard drive size (which can be done up to 160 GB with a good Western Digital or Seagate 2.5" SATA drive), and use external hard drives for backup as my FAQ explains:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
While the G4 can be setup as a server, it would not be an easy to recover solution as a clone, and does not have the same hard drive formatting to act as a clone. You could put your tunes and photos on the G4, and back that up separately, and simply setup your G4 to share the tunes and photos over the network. If you have airport or a local area network with a router this can be done if both machines are running the same iPhoto and iTunes.

  • Best option for more HD space?

Greetings everyone. My Macbook Pro's 120 GB drive just isn't cutting it anymore, especially when it's split between OSX and XP. My XP side isn't enough for even a fraction of my games to be installed, and OSX is feeling the pain of less and less memory, greatly affecting my performance. I need to upgrade, but I don't know the best way to go about it- should I upgrade the internal, or should I buy an external and hook it up with firewire?
    I'm concerned about:
-Running games off of an external drive. Will firewire be fast enough to play my high end games like Crysis and Spore? Will Valve's Steam program run properly?
-Voiding my warranty. I read that upgrading the internal drive will void my warrenty. Will it void my Applecare as well? Voiding my warranty is out of the question for me, as my MBP already died on me once in my first year and a half with it.
-Saving money. I'm an art student. You get the idea.
So, what's the best way to go about this upgrade? External, or internal? I'm pretty much in the dark here. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Will firewire be fast enough to play my high end games like Crysis and Spore? Will Valve's Steam program run properly?
Probably not. Although that would depend on the display settings you set for the game.
Will it void my Applecare as well?
    Yes...AppleCare is your warranty.
what's the best way to go about this upgrade?
Have an Apple Authorized Service Provider isntall an internal drive so as to not void the warranty.

  • I should know, but I don't. If I upload all of my photos to iCloud and then delete them off of my iPhone (for more storage space), will they all remain in iCloud or am I missing the point of iCloud?

I should know, but I don't. If I upload all of my photos to iCloud and then delete them off of my iPhone (for more storage space), will they all remain in iCloud or am I missing the point of iCloud?

Right now, there is no way to upload and access photos in iCloud. You need to import them to a computer if you want to be able to retrieve them later:

  • How to remove 'Create new employee' option for a scenario in org modelling?

    Hi Luke,
We want to remove 'create new employee' option that appears under 'actions' in details panel for a position in scenario (for org chart).
I checked in linkconfiguration folder for position, but it doesn't show this option to be disabled. I also checked detailspresentationconfiguration folder but no luck. I am assuming, it must be pretty different to achieve this for a scenario object.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Prashant

    Hi Prashant,
I'm not entirely sure this can be changed. It doesn't appear to be controlled through configuration or XSL. My guess is it is hard-coded.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
    Best regards,
    Luke

  • How to adjust Boot Camp partition for more Mac space?

    Hello,
    TLDR Version:
When I setup Boot Camp, I intended to stay in Windows. I’ve now migrated to Mac and want more disc space allocated to it. How can I adjust this in Boot Camp without deleting and reinstalling Windows?
    Extended Version:
I have had a 21.5” iMac for right at a year now, and have been running Windows 95% of the time prior to last week. I decided that I was spending more time on the Mac partition and deciding that it was better in my eyes than Windows, and decided to install all of my productivity software (Microsoft Office/Adobe Creative Suite) on it in an effort to wean myself off of Windows.
Unfortunately, when I set the computer up, I did a 90/10 partition install of Windows on Boot Camp, with 90% of the disc space being allocated to Windows. Obviously, this will no longer work for me, and working from my files in the Boot Camp partition is both limited, and irritating. I would like to adjust the partition the other way; probably an 85/15 partition with the 85% being Mac OSX and the remainder being Windows. Because Mac OSX is the boot disc, it appears as though it can be made smaller, but not larger in Boot Camp.
    1. Is there a way to adjust the partition size without having to delete the Windows partition and reinstall?
    2. Is the Airport Time Capsule a suitable device to temporarily dump my data on while I adjust the partition? I’ve got 99% of my data on a separate external HDD from a data backup a month ago, but would rather not have to make another backup.
    I appreciate any information.
    Best regards,
    Ryan

You may want to look at Winclone or Camptune. There is Gparted/Live CD for the adventurous souls.

Time Machine cannot backup Windows. It will only back up OS  - Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

  • Add new select option for VT04 variants

    Hi Experts,
Want to know the process of how we add a new select option (say sold-to/KUNAG) to the existing set of selection criteria in the variants in VT04 apart from implicit enhancements.
Even if we create a new implicit enhancement in LV56LSCR, the new field (sold-to/KUNAG) has to be further added to the select statements also. The select statement in the subroutine INDEX_SELEKTIEREN in LV56LF01 has to be enhanced for the same.
Also should this new field has to be added to the EXPORT TO and IMPORT FROM MEMORY ID MEMORY_LFSL statements in the other includes of SAPLV56L ?
Is there a better/recommended way to do this? Any pointers are much appreciated. Thank You.
    Regards,
    Narendra.

    Hi Ravi,
This is infact the program for the txn VT04, would you be able to shed any other info? Thanks.
    Regards,
    Narendra.

  • New stroke options for the layer style "Stroke"

    Hi,
The new stroke options are fantastic where you can edit gaps, align and corners. And I love the ability to add layer styles to groups which makes it much easier to work with separate parts in a group that should be treated as a common object.
BUT! Why haven't you updated the stroke (layer style) options to include these new awesome stroke features? I would love to be able to make dashed strokes as a layer style that can be applied to groups, and I don't see why this should be excluded as an option.
Thanks for an otherwise great application!
    On twitter: @uxhannes

We are happy that you like the new features in CS6.   You can request new features from your ideas here: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family  and people can vote on them.
Note: A shape layer stroke is a vector-based stroke and is applied only to shape layers. This is very different from the layer syle stroke.
You can control the settings for this stroke in the options bar for the vector tools (Shape, Pen, Path Selection, Direct Selection). This stroke is an attribute of the shape layer and will not cause the fx icon to display on the layer in the Layers panel.
A layer style stroke is a pixel-based stroke and can be applied to any layer that accepts layer styles (including shape layers). The settings for this stroke are controlled via the Layer Styles dialog.

  • Why is my purchase for more storage space show I purchased it

you need to talk to Apple Support - not us.  This is a user-to-user forum.

  • Have been trying to download films on my i pad but receive message saying insuficient storage space so upgraded and paíd for moré storage space but still get same message insuficient space, despite settings saying is have 23  gb available. Any answers

I have been trying to download films on my I Pad  but receive a message saying insuficient storage space, update.  I updated a d paíd for extra space but still receive same message and cannot download the films.  Any suggestionx

The message is referring to not having enough space on your iPad, not to not having enough space in your iCloud account.  Purchasing additional storage in your iCloud account does not give you more available space on your iPad.
You can check how much space you have available on your iPad by going to Settings>General>Usage.  If you don't have enough, you'll have to delete or sync some data off your iPad to free up additional space.

  • Can't import iphoto to new Photos, asking for 1TB additional space?? common

Basiclay yestarday i decided to upgrade to new ISO, a big mistake, photos that i use for work are on my external harddrive iPhotos to which i can get access after upgrade.
I googled the problem and basiclay all i had to do is import iphoto to new Photos, sounds easy, except it takins so slow, im mean realy slow, anyway, leave computer over night on, to comback this monring it stuck on 8% and asking for addition 1 TB of space.
My questions is how to i downgrade it  to old versión cos i need photos now.
where do i suspose to find extra 1 TB of space which i dont have, or i have to buy new hdd?? also how it come up with 1TB since my photos take half of that maybe more....
Its so silly to me, besucase seems like wasnt though throrowly for people who have big iphoto librarys
i would like to know if any solution here or i need new hdd? i use my passport ultra 2TB
    best reagds
ps - i use macbook pro retina, os x yosemite 10.10.3

googled the problem and basiclay all i had to do is import iphoto to new Photos, sounds easy, except it takins so slow, im mean realy slow, anyway,
How have you tried to do that?
You don't have to import iPhoto to Photos, you have to open she iPhoto Libray in Photos.
Either drag the iPhoto Library (not the application) onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
Or launch Photos while holding down the alt/options key to select your iPhoto Library for migration.
Where i your iPhoto library stored? On an external drive or your system drive?

  • My autofill button/option for filling available space with music is missing

Hey, all. I'm using the new iTunes 11. I back up to the cloud and I'm also using iMatch. At some point in the past I used the Autofill option to max out my storage space with music. Today I backed up my phone(a 4S) and restored it, then did a sync. Now I have no music and there is no autofill button at the bottom of the device screen. When I go to the Music tab, it says iMatch is on and songs can be downloaded and played via wifi. I tried shutting off iMatch, but that didn't seem to bring the option back to use Autofill. Any hints? Thanks.

I am in exactly the same boat with iPhoto. The historical music selection in the export/quicktime; inability to choose a song (vs. an album) although I've tried making a song album with just the one song I want. I've tried every suggestion other than converting my songs to MP3 and nothing works.
We should all sue Apple under UCC since the fitness for use clause is not met. Makes me really angry as it was fine in prior versions and now something that use to take a minutes has taken several hours with no solution in sight.
I am not upgrading to iPhoto 6. We're supposed to pay more on the hopes that maybe it'll be fixed? What a waste of money as the big feature in iPhoto was the make a reasonable sized QT movie to send some photos to friends. The computer isn't my life; I have no urge to spend hours reformatting songs, using iMovie, etc. I want to do the electronic equivalent of showing a stack of paper prints to a friend... you know, make my life easier, not harder

  • What's the perfect new-MBP configuration for Logic?

I hope this isn't a troll.  I've been waiting, waiting WAITING for the "refresh" of the MacBook Pro (MBP) to come out so I can solve a few performance problems (including my use of Logic which really requires it to be on one of those laptop fan-stands to keep it cool).  The good news?  The "refresh" is out.  The bad news, there is a huge choice -- old-style MBP or retina-display MBP?
I think I've concluded that "old style" is the way to go -- I like to repair/upgrade my machines too much to give that option up.  So now I'm working on what to put in it.  Hence this post.  Given your experiences, what would you stick in the "perfect" old-style MBP if you were in my shoes?  Here's what I'm leaning towards.
-- Max out the non-upgradeable stuff when I buy the machine -- so...
       -- 2.7 GHz processor
       -- Hi-Res Anti-glare screen
-- Minimize the "upgradeable" bits (since I'm going to replace them with aftermarket stuff)
       -- 750GB 5400 rpm disk drive
       -- Minimum memory
    -- Aftermarket upgrades
       -- Memory
       -- Disk drive
-- Replace optical drive with a flash drive
    Questions:
    1) Memory upgrade -- any recommendations on memory that runs cooler than other types?  My current setup started running a bit hotter when I swapped in aftermarket memory.  I'd cheerfully buy Apple memory to avoid this problem, but maybe there's an aftermarket flavor that is equally good?
    2) Disk drive -- same thing, although I'm not cheerful about buying the Apple versions unless I absolutely have to.  Throughput is key, right?  Anything else I should be keeping an eye on?  Again, heat is something I'm trying to avoid.
    3) Optical drive -- I am massively confused on this one.  I understand the benefits to throughput (and perhaps heat).  But which things should go where?  OS and other "static" stuff (like application programs) on the flash drive (to avoid the finite-writes problem)?  So put Logic Pro and the sound files on the flash drive (I'm thinking that's what I'm going to do)?  Put project files there too?  Recommendations on brands?  Recommendations on optical-drive replacement kits?
    4) Anything else that *you're* doing to build your 2012 MBP for Logic?
Sorry if this is a troll -- I tried to find this post on the list.  If there is one, just link me into the thread.  Thanks!

The RME I use is so intuitive it knows knows my moods and often refuses to record as it knows I'm going to $uck so why bother.
It also decides on which takes to keep.

  • New security option for Lenovo Vintage. X220 user's suggestion.

    Hi everybody,
Almost every model of Lenovo laptops has accelerometer, it used in Airbag protection and Reading optimization prog.
I suggest to Vintage programmers to make another new app that uses the data from accelerometer and will be responsible for security in the way like this:
    1. Somebody try to move a laptop
    2. The app receives the data from accelerometer and immediately block (turn off/ hibernate/ - user decide which option is suitable)
    3. Profit
Of cause the option to choose sensitivity is also necessary
Thanks and sorry for my English

Stedman1, Thanks I have just submitted it there too. It would be handy for others to also send them this feedback as we know that they must get thousands of suggestions a day and I guess who shouts louder gets heard. If everyone contacts them with the same suggestion we may be able to get this into development. :-)

    Hi homerhotspur,
Word of warning.  Make sure you get your deal confirmed in writing or by email.  I did a deal with the options team.  My bill was correct for the first month so I threw my call log away.  The second bill was wrong and BT deied any knowledge of the agreed deal.  It tokk quite some time and effort to get things sorted.  I am just hoping and praying that my May bill is correct otherwise it will be a bigger pain still sorting that out as BT will owe me money.  Is there such a thing as a reverse Direct Debit ?

  • Looking for more storage space?

Do you need some more storage room and you find HP Storageworks a bit pricey, have a look here:
    http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/external_raid/7900_storage_system/index.html
It offers room for 60 3.5" disks or Stec SSD's, giving a storage capacity of 480 TB magnetic or 201 TB SSD in a single 4U unit.

An external drive is cheaper than a SAN or NAS. And we don't need to share the storage space between multiple machines.
USB 2.0 or Firewire seem fast enough. Maybe this approach will be conventional in the future?
