New MBP- Please Advise

Hi. I was thinking of getting a new MBP with all the upgrades, and than someone gave me a suggestion. The idea was that instead of an MBP, get a MacBook and an iMac. This way, I have a nice desktop to use, and a laptop for portability. I would create a VPN to the iMac, and also use ACTS, since it is faster than VNC (my internet is 12/2, so its a pretty solid connection).
I will be going to college in one and a half years, so that is an important factor. I currently have a PowerBook (specs in my profile info, look at bottom of post), which runs Dreamweaver. Fireworks, and Flash pretty decently for the system. I would need those, plus Photoshop and Illustrator, and the other not so intensive apps, like iWork. I'm not big on video editing, but I do want to learn Cocoa and work in Xcode. The portable system I get now will probably be the system I take to college. Anything I absolutely need that won't run on my MB, I will use through ACTS to my iMac, but that selection should be limited, if it even exists.
As for gaming, I do once in a while (I'm not a huge gamer), and the games I would put on the MB aren't that graphics intensive. I would use the iMac for most of my games anyways.
This setup is only a few hundred dollars more, which seems like a lot, but I am getting 2 systems, one (MB) a little under the MBP and the iMac, which would be equal to or better (spec-wise). I need a system to carry around, but I also like a system I can always have on, but it's not neccesary. Any, and all, systems I get will have a copy of Windows 2008 Server Enterprise Edition installed, only because that is what I have for Windows. Not actually using for a server. I plan on having 4GB of RAM on both systems if I go with that setup, and a VM may be used once in a while for testing (also use Parallels to boot from BootCamp partition when just need Windows for something quick.)
Comments? Suggestions? Thanks, it's much appreciated.

my advice would be to upgrade the ram in your current laptop, keep it and get a mac pro. i only started using my laptop now that I am traveling a lot, but in college, i barely use my laptop, and mainly stick to my desktop. the mac pro is FAST, and that way, you can upgrade if you need it, whereas with the imac and macbook, both will be obsolete in 2 years. mainly youre probably going to use the laptop for note taking, if even that. everything else, you'
ll probably do on the desktop, and car run anything you need remotely. the way i see it is its better to have one really fast computer, instead of 2 "regular" ones, which will be mediocre by the time you get to college. snow leopard will help in taking advantage of multiple cores, and by the time you go to college everything will probably be at least quad core.
if you give us your budget, i can recommend more, but from experience of mine in the past couple of years, once in college, the most i used a laptop for was watching movies when not in my room and maybe looking up homework PSets and notes, nothing really intensive.

  • Another New User, Please Advise, Can I Permanently Use Zen Stone From Power Adap

Can I permanently run my new Zen Stone directly from the Zen USB Power Adapter. Like I have my Zen Stone connected to small speakers and would like it to run off the Zen Power Adapter (wall charger) not the battery, permanently. In other words I would like to keep it plugged into the Power Adapter all the time and run it that way so I don't have to run it off the battery and keep charging it. Is this OK to do Please advise this senior citizen trying to keep up with all this great stuff.

  • I'm shopping for a new ideacentre - please advise

I'm a little confused and a little concerned about what to buy.  Maybe someone can help advise me.  On the lenovo site, the have a model 53132CU which looks like a top rate machine for 800USD. The only comparable model I can find at other webtailers is model # 57076244 for $750. Wondering why it is not a 5313xxx?  The only difference seems to be 1 GB of RAM.  What else is different?? The numbering scheme seems to be designed to keep me from comparing anything to the lenovo direct site. Shady?
I'm also interested why the PDF data sheet shows the top of the line model to be the 53132FU available in October.  But even the lenovo site dos not have them.  When will it be available and where?
I also would like to add a second HDD setup as a raid 1.  Will the controller & Vista allow this? And reading the forum, it looks like an update will remove the C & D partition in December.  Should I hold out for this update?   I figure that buying from a reseller, they may not have the update for months.
Thanks for and good advice from you folks!

You can buy the 8GB configuration and add more ram if there are additional sockets on the mother board.
I bought a refurbished Dell workstation from Dell because it was a refurbished machine I had not choice is the amount of Ram it would come with.
My  machine came with 8GB of ECC RAM speed rating 1600. The machine had 4 empty RAM  I wanted more RAM for more RAM helps when you work on documents with lots of layers.  You can buy RAM from Dell as well as from third party sellers.   Dell prices are somewhat higher the third party sellers and if you buy a large quantity of ram modules you can get even better prices.   I added 32GB of of 1600 ECC RAM for about $300 Dell price was some what higher nearer $400.  If a bought more then 10 RAM modules instead of the four I purchased the per unit price I could would have been lower.
SSD is also very desirable for Photoshop scratch space.

  • Syncing with new mac, please advise

Hi. I currently sync my iphone with a G5, which i'm now selling. What is the procedure for syncing with a brand new mac? What do i need to do to make the switch over?
Obviously i don;t want to lose all my contacts, etc thats all i'm concerned about.
    Thank you

Ideally, you should move your data from your old Mac to your new Mac directly. Since you're moving from a PPC-based Mac to an Intel-based Mac, I'd personally recommend against using Migration Assistant. Instead, you can move your files (including calendars, mail accounts, etc.) by following the detailed instructions in this User Tip:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350
When you connect to the new Mac, your iTunes-managed media content will be replaced - that includes music, videos, ringtones, apps, and pictures. Items on the Info tab (contacts, calendars) will be synced as well - if the corresponding apps on the new Mac (iCal, Address Book) are completely empty, the data on the iPhone will be deleted. Thus, you're best bet is to have those data moved over as described above. Alternatively, if you create one new calendar entry and one new contact (make them up), you'll be prompted to choose to Replace or Merge the data - choose Merge and the contacts/events will be transferred from the iPhone to the new Mac.
Hole this helps, and good luck!

  • N80 backlight and new firmware - please advise

    Hi,
I just got an N80 and I'm really happy with it except for the backlight which seems to come on randomly. I put this down to the light sensor and tried adjusting to maximum as suggested by Nokia FAQ, but that didn't help and I assumed it was normal behaviour.
I took the N80 to a Nokia service centre to upgrade the firmware and they said the backlight should always come on when the slider is opened and when any key is pressed, regardless of the light sensor settings. Can anyone pleese confirm this as mine doesn't do that.
Also, they didn't upgrade my firmware bcos the product code was vodafone and although the phone is genuinely sim-unlocked from Nokia, they can only upgrade with the Vodafone firmware otherwise the upgrade would invalidate my warranty. I don't understand why that should be the case if the phone is not sim-locked. How long before the vodafone firmware will be released?
    Thanks.

Well, they scanned it on the warranty system and it comes up okay for warranty (there's a line with Sim-Lock: N). What they said was it's a batch of phones allocated to vodafone. I still don't see why I can't upgrade the firmware and retain the warranty.Message Edited by dijimon on 25-Aug-2006

there is nothing stopping you getting the phone updated under warranty. As long as the phone is within its warranty period, a Nokia Engineer will be able to update it for you.
However, this will only be done under warranty if there is a problem with your phone.
If you would just like to get it updated just for the sake of having the latest firmware, then the Engineers may charge you for this.
By getting your phone updated you will get the latest firmware available for Vodafone in your country.
    Cheers

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase
Get a nice 1TB USB external HD for $65

    Hi Bander Bunny!
I have a couple of articles that should be able to help you troubleshoot this issue a little further. You may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes first. This has to be done in a specific manner, and this article can help you do that:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Another option is that you may want to try syncing your iPod nano manually. Here's is an article that pertains to manually managing the content of your iPod nano:

It's also possible that this issue resides with your iPod nano. Here is a website that will help you troubleshoot the iPod nano:

    Hi ldyazch,
You will need to set it up as a new phone, not from a backup, first. Then, after setup is complete, go to Settings > General > Software Update. Make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery power. After then update downloads and installs, you can go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
This will let you go through the setup again, and this time you can choose your backup.

When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5? I have a new Mac book Pro 2013 and cannot install. Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.
    Apple please advise.

Apple does not respond in these forums except occasionally an Apple employee will stop by. If you want to contact Apple, use the contact us link at the bottom of this page.
With respect to your question "When will Windows 8.1 be supported on Boot camp 5?" you are asking us to speculate as to when Apple will release their drivers supporting Windows 8.1. We do not know, and we can not speculate as to when. From the terms of use of this forum:
"Unless otherwise noted, do not add Submissions about nontechnical topics, including:
Speculations or rumors about unannounced products."
The planned dates of production or release of Windows 8.1 drivers are speculation about the drivers.
With respect to your other question, "Do I return the Windows version and try to download 8.0, or wait it out until it is supported? New to Mac's.". I answered you.

See this article: iPad: Using the iPad Camera Connection Kit
No, this canot be done, afaik. When your camera or card is connected, you will see the thumbnails in the camera pane, but not full size preview. So to browse your photos on the iPad you will need to import them to your camera roll. But you need not delete them from the camera or card after importing, so you might simply import selected photos to your camera roll from the camera grid and then delete them again from the camera roll after importing and browsing, without removing them from the card/camera.

  • I have Safari 5.1.10 and want to get the newer version.  This may be a dumb question, but do I have to pay to get an upgrade, or is this just a software update.  I am not very technical.  Please advise!

I have a Mac OS X, version 10.6.8, and I am using safari 5.1.10.  I think I need to get a newer version of Safari if this is possible.
How do I go about doing this?  Do I have to purchase a different "safari" product?
I'm obviously not very technical, and don't know how to proceed!  The reason I want to change this is because
I keep getting messages saying that my web brower (isn't that what safari is?) is out of date.  Please advise!

For you it requires an upgrade of OS X. Since you have 10.6.8 installed you can upgrade directly to Yosemite for free provided your hardware meets the requirements:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Now there is an issue on Apple's server that seems to keep users with 10.6.8 from downloading Yosemite. Apple is working on the problem, so be patient and keep trying
