New MBP - should I stay with Snow Leopard or jump to Lion?

Running Final Cut Studio 3 I have just upgraded our older MBP15 Core Duo to a nearly new MBP15 Quad-core i7. I will install FCS3 on it and wonder if Lion is stable with FCS now? Any thoughts?

I agree with Robert .. You really need to ask yourself why you would need Lion. I have a total of 7 various MACs from MBP to Air's and MAC Pro all stillrunning Snow Lep ..all because it does all I need and I can use FCS3 in a very stable and workflow way that suits me. I know the foibles and have no need for FXPX either. I see Robert runs both and have read on many occasions other doing the same. I have also read others having issues .. it seems to be dependant on how you upgrade .. I have no need so do not change .. I also drive a four year old car for the same reason ..

  • Lion - I have to say I should have stayed with Snow Leopard

I am not a huge of Lion at all.  In Snow Leopard and using Parallels I could print, email and work flawlessly.  But I made the stupid decision to upgrade to Lion and now I cannot for the life of me print From Parallels at all now.  THIS *****!!!  In a company where printing large sheets in a MUST - it dissappoints me that I cannot use my machine as I need it to be used.  I think Apple needs to reconsider their operatig system....
    I miss Snow Leopard...

PS That is Lion, Parallels 7, Windows 7 and HP Designjet 500 42-inch.  I can print just fine from Mac but not Parallels (this set up worked great on Snow Leopard/Parallels 7)

I have not had any problems setting up any printer, so far, from Lion with Vmware Fusion and Win XP. Or from Win 7 on PC. And I use a Designjet 500 also
You are not doing something right. If you upgraded to Lion over Snow Leopard you may have to Re-install Parallels, latest version, Load your Win 7 Virtual Machine (in Fusion I can save the complete Win OS anywhere on my system or network and then copy it back and run it) and then re-Install the print drivers for your printer.

  • Upgraded to Lion, wish I'd stayed with Snow Leopard

    Just venting here....
I bought my first Mac in 1985, and I have been using them ever since. I have always eagerly anticipated the release of a new OS, and I have never been disappointed--until now. I upgraded to Lion on the first day it came out, and I wish I had just stayed with Snow Leopard. Some of the changes baffle me, as well as the absence of useful features I'd come to rely on in Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Oh, well. I'm hoping I will grow to like Lion as time goes on.

Well, one reason for this is that you know FCP very well...
All the more reason to stay with it, though it does appear that Apple has turned their collective backs on users, such as you.
Now, one answer would be for Adobe to throw away PrPro, then license the code from Apple, and create FCP8, which many previous users want. Oh wait, they have done almost that, just to get the FCP users to jump ship, regardless of what the loyal PrPro users were accustomed to.
Maybe all you have to do is wait a bit, and soon PrPro will actually become FCP8?
    Good luck,

  • Staying With Snow Leopard

    Hi.
I'm seriously thinking about forgetting the whole Lion/Mountain Lion idea, and just staying with Snow Leopard as my main OS over the next couple of years. My computers seem to like it, and it's clean and stable.
I'm wondering, though, whether SL will be supported enough to be okay to use, once Mountain Lion comes out. Does anyone have any idea how well the older OS'es hold up after the newer ones are released?

Does anyone have any idea how well the older OS'es hold up after the newer ones are released?
Very well in fact. Many people still use Tiger as it was arguably the best for older G4s. Apple even released a version of Safari for it in November 2010, years after Tiger was discontinued.
Your biggest concern will be lack of support from third party software developers, but considering everything written for Snow Leopard requires Intel code it is unlikely anything developed for Snow will become obsolete any time soon. All software will be distributed through the App Store but Snow Leopard already has that.
Right now I don't know of anything that requires Lion, other than certain Apple features like AirDrop.
Lion and its eventual descendants will only improve but that's no reason you have to jump in right now. Lion is a major release, arguably the biggest change in OS X since its inception. Waiting is OK.

  • Lion successfully installed. now unable to get on vpn using cisco, error 51 constantly appears. should have stayed on snow leopard!

ion successfully installed. now unable to get on vpn using cisco, error 51 constantly appears. should have stayed on snow leopard!

Try opening a terminal window (Applications >> Utilities). At the prompt, enter:
    >sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN
This will ask you for the admin password and it will restart the Cisco client service. That should fix it. This seems to be a known issue that will eventually be solved with some updates.

  • New macbook pro should it come with snow leopard

i bought a macbook pro 2 days ago from a well known store called comet when i got it home though i noticed it never came with snow leopard should i get this free with the macbook or do i have to pay £7.50 and if so is it worth it

    Hi
I bought my MacBook Pro on the release date for Snow leopard at an Apple Store (Brighton, UK). This came with a Snow Leopard drop in Disc.
It looks like the one you picked up from Comet was old stock (not that old of course just shipped by Apple before the Snow Leopard release date), and it may well be that you will have to claim under the up to date programme.
I doubt very much that Apple will have supplied update discs for Comet to include at point of sale for Macs shipped prior to the release date of Snow Leopard. As far as I am aware Comet do not stock Snow Leopard as a separate product, so they are unlikely to be able to let you have a copy.
It is probably worth giving Apple customer services a call and see what they say, or go to an Apple store and ask, if you are close enough to one to make it viable. Take your receipt from Comet and explain nicely, you may get lucky and they will give you a copy.
If you do have to pay via the up to date scheme then I would say yes it is worth it. You won't see much difference, but you will be bang up to date for under £10.
    Good luck
    Paul

  • My mbp came with Snow Leopard, I upgraded to Lion, but its not in my purchases now.

I have an early 2011 MBP, it came with Snow Leopard preinstalled. I later upgraded to Lion when it was released. I did a clean wipe on the hard drive and a fresh reinstall of Snow Leopard with the intention of re loading Lion also. It's not showing in my purchases now though, its as if I never bought it. I also upgraded my iMac when Lion came out and am running Lion on it also, but it's not even showing up in purchases on it either. I am logged in to my iTunes account on both.
I figured it out. I went into my account information and under purchases it said I had 1 hidden purchase. Lion was the hidden purchase. No idea why it was like that. It's downloading now though.

Contact the Mac App Store support to get Lion if you need it for compatibility purposes.

  • Is it possible to order an iMac specifically with Snow Leopard, in preference to Lion, say, by the end of this year (as a Christmas gift)?

I want to buy an iMac as a Christmas gift this year and wondered if it may be possible to specifically order one with Snow Leopard? By then I imagine all machines available for sale are likely to have Lion pre-loaded, hence my question.
If I could buy one now, I would, as there are many around still with Snow Leopard - but sadly I can't manage it just at the moment.
    Thanks
    Ross

Thanks folks, I realise this is just a user forum of course, I was just wondering if anyone had previous experience with buying a Mac with an older system on it at a time of changeover like this. A friend has just bought a new one from an Apple store this week with Snow Leopard on it - not surprising given the newness of Lion, but I was curious to know if anyone had experience with being given a choice during a system upgrade.
And who knows...maybe Apple do look in at the forums to see what people are asking????
    Thanks

  • Opinions please on Lion or stay with snow leopard.

I have a 24in imac with a 2.8intel core 2 duo w/ 2 g of ram. Everything works perfectly now and after weeks of browsing the discussions and the web I am really afraid to upgrade to lion. The only reason I might have to is because of all my .mac /.me mail accounts. After years of use most of my mail accounts are with mobile me and I would be lost trying to change everyone of them. I moved all my galleries to Picassa and I never used idisk. Does anyone with this computer and processor have anything encouraging to say about lion? Many have said it slowed their computers down considerably. Thank you for any advice.

Lion will not slow down your computer unless you do not have adequate RAM. 2 GBs is the required minimum, but practically you need at least 4 GBs. That said unless you have some specific need to use Lion there's no need to upgrade. Eventually you will have to if you want to use iCloud.
How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
    Follow instructions for installation.

Yes. You should be fine with Snow Leopard, but Lion requires a minimum of 2 GBs of RAM. If you upgrade to Lion I would first upgrade your RAM to at least 4 GBs if your model supports it. Also, see:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.

    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • How far should I upgrade from snow leopard

how far should I upgrade from snow leopard.  I just installed more RAM for a total of 4 GB.
    Thanks

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.  You can make a bootable USB stick to install using this free program.
Bootable USB Flash Drive – Diskmaker X
If your computer isn’t compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion. Personal opinion, I'd stay with Snow Leopard rather than Lion.

  • Ichat no longer works with snow leopard

i recently installed Snow Leopard on my macbook pro and ever since, when I try to open iChat, a window opens and says "You can't use this version of the application iChat with this version of Mac OS X. You have iChat 4.0.8. I thought that the new version would have installed with Snow Leopard. What do I need to do?

    Hi,
    Go to the Applications folder.
Do you have two versions of iChat in there ?
If so, Click on to Highlight it.
Use the Apple Key (CMD) and I key together (Get Info)
In the panel that pops up what version number is it ?
What is the version number of the other one ?
If one is iChat 5 and one is iChat 4, drag the current iCon for iChat Off the DOCK and let go. (Puff of Smoke animation)
Drag the iChat 5 icon to the DOCK (It does not move the App just links to it.)
If you only have iChat 4 then post back and let us know as there will be more steps.
Please note the time of my post as I may not reply for some time.

  • FireWire ports on display not working with Snow Leopard Mac Pro

I just bought a new quad core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and I have connected it to my three year- old Apple 23 inch cinema display and everything works fine....except for the Firewire 400 ports on the display. They no longer recognize my external iSight camera or external hard drives. And of course the devices will not connect to the computer's 800 ports. Anyone come across this, or have any solutions? I've tried connecting and reconnecting and have repaired permissions. Thanks.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.
