New MBP Superdrive does not burn DL DVD - I'm taking it to Apple today

My two-week old MBP is wonderful. Except for the inability to burn double layer DVDs. I took the advice of the Apple salespersons and bought DVDs at another store. They said these would work. Out of the first four attempts BURN did make two DVDs of my pictures. Then errored out on the next eight attempts. So I have an appointment at the Apple store later today. I will keep you posted.

I'm at the Apple Store Genius Bar right now. Bottom line seems clear that I purchased a bad batch of Memorex DVDs. Two of mine failed and two of theirs worked. Same brand, etc. Oh well. Guess I'll buy Verbatim next.

  • New MBP i5 does not boot after hard disk swap

    Hi there,
I received my new i5 MBP today. After booting it once with the installed HDD to check if it's ok, I exchanged the hard disk for the one in my Late 2008 Macbook Pro. After doing this, my Late 2008 Macbook Pro boots fine with the (new) hard disk from the new i5 MBP, but the i5 MBP does not boot with my old hard disk.
    To give you some details:
    - I have installed 10.6.3 on the (old) hard disk that's not booting.
    - The i5 MBP boots fine from the installation DVD
    - Disk utility finds and can read my hard disk, no errors
    - PRAM NVRAM reset did not help
    - when booting in safe mode, I can see the system stop booting after or while loading Extensions.mkext
My guess is, it tries to boot and load the wrong Extensions for the new system (CPU? GPU?). I have no idea how to fix this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Focx,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Inserting the drive from an earlier model MBP will probably not work. The version of the system you have on that HD is designed for earlier hardware so when you put in in your new machine it's going to be recognized. What I'd recommend is re-installing the disk that came with the new machine and of course putting the 2008's disk back in the old machine. Then use Migration Assistant on the new machine and migrate your data from the old machine into the new machine.
This will provide a much more stable system and should work just fine.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Superdrive does not burn Cd-"checking media"

In the past couple of weeks, I would burn a CD with iTunes 7.0.1 and then any other blank CD I insert would just keep spinning and iTunes would report "checking media". Sometimes the blank CD would be rejected. Each day I can burn a CD and then after that I can't burn a CD until I restart.
I have been able to burn DVD's without any problems.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This is what I have so far. When I am able to burn
an audio CD with iTunes, the CD text does not show
    up, just Track #s.
That is normal. iTunes does not handle CD Text.
Otherwise, I get the message of
"Checking media" and the drive keeps spinning.
Have you tried different media, such as Verbatim.
I quit iTunes and used Toast to burn a data file. That
was okay. But when I tried to burn 2 songs from the
iTunes library with Toast, the burn went okay, but
    the song titles were incorrect.
Also normal. Song titles are not stored on audio CDs. iTunes get the song titles from an online database of CDs. The CD is identified by the lengths of all the songs on the disc. If you burn only part of a CD, it will not find the correct song titles.
    I also used Disk
Utilities to burn a data file and that went okay.
Data disk are burned with a directory of file names, so do not have the song name problems of audio CDs.
    Should iTunes be re-loaded?
No. I think your only problem is bad media.

  • Optiarc Drive does not burn DL DVDs

Hi, after looking up the post regards the Optiarc drive which came with MacPro computers I found the post about getting the error #6 here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1294824&tstart=0
I don't have this problem but my drive spits out DL discs when I try and burn on them. I checked Sys Profiler and drive info is:
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A:
    Firmware Revision: 1.N8
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RAM, -RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
I noticed that the cache is 0kb and DL disks aren't listed as supported, nor is an +media. Does anyone know if this is the reason my drive spits out DL discs? If so, does anyone have a fix for this? Do I need to reinstall or update the firmware? I'd rather not mess about with unsupported firmware if possible. Anyway, this seems a bit NQR. Can anyone help?

I have been having problems with my Optiarc drives for the last three months. After getting the error 6 and then having the drives not burn anything to fixing the burn issue and now having the problem you're having.
However, I can burn on TDK DVD+R DL 8x. When I insert Verbatim DVD-R DL 4x they just get spat out. I have two of exactly the same drive on the one Mac and they seem to perform independently.. ie. one may read a disk yet the other one wont.
So, to get a temporary fix for the Error#6 so I could use the drive I had to clear permissions. Here's a step by step of what I did:
    1. Go to Users/user/Library/Preferences/ and trash "com.apple.finder.plist"
    2. Restart using the install disk. (Can take a while)
    3. Choose your language
    4. Open "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu
    5. Select main drive and "Repair permissions"
    6. Quit "Disk Utility"
    7. Open "Reset Password" for the "Utilities" menu
    8. Select the target hard drive and select the user account
    9. Click "Reset Button" under "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs"
    10. When button says "Done" in grey, quit and restart.
After doing this I was able to burn. I am about to try the same thing to see if it fixes the disc "spit-out" issue and will post results.

  • MBP superdrive does not accept commercial audio cds

    Hi people,
My superdrive mostly does not accept commercial audio cds when i keep on trying it accepts them sometimes but you cannot say under which circumstances.
I already tried to resolve this with a "reset -all" in the single user mode but this just lead to acceptance of the first inserted audio cd afterwards it was problematic again to load audio cds.
Does anybody know something that helps to make the drive reliably accept all cds of this kind?
    THANKS

Yep, to me this is an issue with your optical drive.
Contact Apple (in the USA call 800-275-2273 for other locations check [this list|http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html]) or carry it in to an Apple retail store for repairs. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first or you may wait a long time to talk to a Mac Genius. Tell them what has been done and get it repaired.
    Best of luck.

  • IDVD says 'supported disk no available,' does not burn too DVD!?

I have an Apple Imac G4 10.4.11, with iDVD 5. I have a 1 hour 20 minute 'AVI file on my computer that I want to burn to a DVD. I clicked 'Open New Project' on iDVD, then clicked 'File' and 'Import Video' and added my 'AVI file. I put in the disk ands started the burn. It took hours and hours then it ended and DVD Player popped up and a message came up on iDVD saying 'Supported Disc Needed,' but it accepted this disc, it is a DVD RW disk. How do I fix this?

    Hi
There are several things to this.
A .avi is a container that can carry several different codecs - most often not working with iDVD - but need's to be converted to something iDVD likes as streamingDV, .H264 or AIC (last two I think)
    • MPEG Streamclip
    • QuickTime with Pro activated
    • Flip4Mac - There is a free demo - to test and see if it works - usually does
    B. Mac and iDVD are picky regarding DVDs used. Memorex and Cheap brands usually gives problems.
DVD-RW so to a Problem maker
I use only DVD-R from Verbatim.
    C. A DVD can be burned into two types. Data-DVD and Video-DVD. To get an Video-DVD one has to wait to insert the DVD until iDVD asks for it (or burn it via Apple Disk Util tool from a DiskImage). If inserted too soon - Mac OS will ask You to Format or Eject it. If formatted You've got a Data-DVD.

  • DVD drive does not burn the DVD but prompts the mysterious 0x8002006D error

I read the earlier threads about the mysterious 0x8002006D error.
Then went to look at the console and the DiskRecording log reads:
Finder: Burn sense: 3/73/03 Medium Error, Power calibration area error
Finder: Burn error: 0x8002006D The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
Can anyone tell what this could mean? Is the drive old and tired? I have the latest possible update for this Powerbook G4 1,25 GHz that I can use. What is meant by the latest firmware - where can I check which is the latest firmware for this particular DVD/CD superdrive ...
I am not trying to use the impossible, the G4 only supports DVD-R and with the speed up to 2x, so it is getting difficult to find suitable DVDs for this. The better MacBook is being serviced, as it has a screen problem, only after 1 year of use!
Please, can anyone help me, my works do not make any progres and I am in trouble!
    I would be grateful for

Actually, I found out that for this particular PowerBook model there is no further firmware upgrade for the SuperDrive, only for the models starting from 1.5 GHz. Obviously all I can do is downgrade my OS to the version, which I suspect was the one that still supported my SuperDrive to see, whether it is the Drive that has died or whether it is the conflict with the upgrades and the hardware.

  • New MBP i7 does not recognize my iphone

Seemed like a successful migration from my 1st year older MBP. Itunes and photos, files all moved to my new machine. The old MBP still sync my iphone. Anyone have any suggestions?

I worked it out. I had to reinstall the latest version of Itunes. Yesterday when I first started the new MPB I made sure it had all the updated software. Somehow I did not have the latest Itunes. If anyone else has this issue, make sure you drag the old itunes application to the trash first. Open applications and type /system/library/extensions the go, then /library/receipts/ then go. Put them in the trash and upload then update the newest. west version of Itunes. This worked after doing all the other suggestions.

  • Dvd studio pro does not burn readable dvds on other platforms

I have DVDSP 4.1.2 and always used it to create DVD with content.
Now after I upgrade to 10.6.4, I can burn DVDs but they are not readable on other platforms (PC or DVD Players).
    Thank you

I have no such issues on my systems, we burn lots of DVDs. Description suggests something wrong with your DVD drive not the software or OS since neither Eric nor I can duplicate your problem.

  • How to activate CS4 on new Mac which does not have CD/DVD drive?

One answer to this elsewhere in the foum was to copy the discs to a thumb drive, then copy them to the new computer, then use those to install CS4 (or any pre-Cloud version) on the new machine. This works for disc-1. But there's no way to "install" disc-2 or to make the half-complete installation process pick up disc-2. How can I install CS4 on my new Mac?

Download the installation files and use those to install.

  • Out of the Box MacBook Pro does not burn DVD DL

    Hi
My new out of the Box MacBook Pro 2,8 Ghz, 500 GB HD does not burn DVD DL.
Its telling me something like "Servo Error" in Toast 10.0.4 and also iTunes with a big playlist in DataDVD burn mode does not get the job of burning a DVD DL done.
    It makes me soooo sad.
I had problems with my DVD Drive on my Power Book G4 12", also on my MacBook 2,16 Ghz even after a repair it would not burn DVD DL.
    So what to do?

    Hi
    Thanks for the tips.
Well since its a absolutely new MacBook Pro it should burn DL as stated on the Box. So I call the store and they will sent me a new one. That worked very nice and smoothly, so here on costumer care apple is on the very big side.
I hope the new one will burn em right away.
You know: Why do they put such bad drives in their so nicely build MacBooks? I don't get it at all. Maybe we are short before Bluray and so they putting inn all the old drives.... Who knows.
Its well know that apple is not using very good drives in their computers.
Na ja so ist es halt.
    Keep the good work up!

  • DVD does not burn

I am trying to burn a disc with iDVD and every time it starts the burn and then after a few moments ejects the disc and hangs on the burning done screen. No burning has actually occurred on the disc at all - it totally blank.
    1) This is a brand new MBP. I was having some similar issues with my old MBP and copied over everything from timemachine, so not sure if some error copied over. Although even when I was having problems single layer discs were burning fine, only DL had a problem.
    2) I have tried trashing the iDVD pref file as well as my Finder pref file.
    3) Machine has been restarted.
    4) I tried to burn footage that had already been burned successfully at other times so I know its not an issue with what I am importing.
    5) Tried a Verbatim disc
    6) I created a new account on the machine and tried burning with that and the same thing occurred.
    7) I AM ABLE to burn a data DVD - even a large 3 gig one, with no problems at 8x speed.
    8) Tried burning the video dvd at 1x speed.
    9) I tried burning a disc with DVD Studio Pro and go the follow error in about the same time frame as the disc stopped burning in iDVD: The recording device reported the media error: unknown device error
    10) I have about 150 gigs free on my drive.
    Any ideas...going insane.
Are there other files I can delete? prefs I am missing?

    1) This is a brand new MBP
You should not be having a problem burning on a new Mac. Call Apple while your computer is still under warranty.
