New MBP vs. Last Gen MBP

I have a reseller who is offering to sell me a Last Gen 13" MacBook Pro (2.53Ghz/4G RAM/250G HD) for $ 1,000.
The Current Gen 13" MacBook Pro base models (2.4Ghz/4G RAM/250G HD) sell for $ 1,199.
Since they are so close in price I would USUALLY just get the new, but it seems to me, based on the Tech Specs I've seen, that the Last Gen MBP is actually better???!!! Almost all sopecs are identical with the exception of the Last Gen has a faster processor (2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo as opposed to 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo)
Is that right, or am I missing something? I appreciate any input.
Thanks!

Hi.
The 13" MBP is definitely not a Core i5/7, it's still a C2D. The previous gen 2.26Ghz has been bumped up to 2.4Ghz and the previous gen 2.53Ghz has been bumped up to 2.66 Ghz. The new gen also have updated GPU, which is supposed to give a good performance gain also. I guess it depends on what you will be using it for and how much you want to spend. I am also planning to get an MBP, pretty sure it will be the standard 2.4Ghz one, however, I think I'm going to wait and see if Apple resolve the freezing issue with these new 2010 MBPs.

  • Last gen MBP superdeal

    Hi there
    I was offered a superdeal on a brand new MBP 15" 2,5GHZ and a MBP 15" 2,5GHZ
    My questions:
    1. I´ve read that some of the nVidia GeForce 8600M GT videocards are faulty. Is that the 256 mb or the 512 mb version, or maybe both versions?
    2. What are the benefits by choosing the MBP 15" 2,5GHZ over the MBP 15" 2,5GHZ (besides a bigger GPU and a bigger HD) ?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. Apple and nVidia are supposed to have taken care of the 8600M issues and if by chance you get a faulty nVidia chip, they will replace the logic board for free. I have one of those 256M VRAM models and I really beat the crap out of it GPU/CPU usage wise and have zero problems. So I would not worry on that front.
    2. The CPU is the 2.53Ghz model has twice the cache of the other model and so if you do CPU intensive task it will turn out a bit faster. Apart from that you already mentioned GPU with more RAM and bigger HD. I think given how low the price of the 2.5 Ghz model is - there is no reason not to choose the better model.

  • New gen vs previous gen MBP?

    Hi all,
Found good price on last gen (gen before the ones that just came out) 2.4GHz/200GB HD/2GB RAM and looking for feedback. Any widespread/general weaknesses, "complaints" about this model?
I see the new 2.4 has the LED display, faster GPU, 250GB HD, faster HD bus, faster system bus, the new unibody, but aside from these things, wondering if there's any reason to spend over $700 more on the new one?
Oh, and new gen has gone to all glossy glass displays (no more matte option); I've always had a matte display and suspect glare is considerably worse on the new displays, but haven't looked at MBP glossy displays yet.
Any thoughts/experiences would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

It comes down to what you can afford right now. The machine that you have quoted will serve you just as well as a new MacBook Pro.
Having written that, I have noted a thread with praises for the new MacBook Pro.

By having a unibody MacBook Pro, you will never have to worry about this issue.

    Good luck with your decision!
    Thank you, TJK!
My own MacBook Pro late 2007 notebook had suffered the same display warping too, and it is only getting worse.
Before Apple, I had been an IBM ThinkPad user, as I had appreciated the strong build of their notebooks. I have found the new MacBook Pros to be built even stronger.
The strength of the unibody had been one of the main reasons that I had purchased two of the new MacBook Pros.

  • Adobe's take on CS6 performance on the next gen MBP

Forgive me if I missed this, but being gutted they still haven't released a new Mac Pro (spec bumps released today don't count), I'm thinking of just getting a Next Gen MBP and work from there.  Does Adobe have an opinion on how it performs with CS6 particulaly related to Cuda acceleration and the Mercury Playback engine?  Will it do well with only 16GB of RAM and the internal 650M card?

I'm not Adobe and don't speak for them.  What I say here is probably worth less than you paid for it.  However...
Doing some thought exercises should pretty much answer your question.  Some things about the new MBP (which I intend to get, eventually) -
1GB of VRAM.  MPE in hardware mode, assuming it works with the GT650M (and no reason to assume it won't) will be somewhat hobbled with only a Gig of VRAM.
16G of RAM is probably enough but a bit on the tight side depending on what you're editing.
Spinning media: using a laptop for your primary editing rig is always a challenge due to storage.  The new MBPs have 2 Thunderbolt ports which is nice, so you'd be encouraged to add external storage via those ports.  But doing so is going to cost you some serious $$.
Can you do it?  I'd assume so.  Will it perform as well as a Mac Pro with a decent video card and a cubic f'load of RAM in it?  Probably not.  IMHO: I think you're foolish to walk away from the Mac Pro for PPro editing if you want to stay in the Mac world.  The new MBP laptops look superb, and after years of having cruddy displays on their 15" laptops, Apple has finally turned a weakness into a strength (2880x1800.. good grief!)  But, unless you start going nuts with Thunderbolt add-ons, the laptop is still going to be I/O-bound to some extent, and limited in what it can do from a video performance perspective.

    Hello
I bought my wife a new MacBook Pro, in setting it up for her, I took her Time Machine external drive to migrate onto the new machine but her old MBP not only was on 10.6, it was my old machine which I was still Administrator for.
i plugged in the external drive to start the migration process after entering her name and username from the old machine which gave me the options on transferring the old data over.
I also unchecked the Administrative end that had my info hoping that ONLY her data, files, etc., would be the ones sent over to her new machine which I wanted her to be the ONLY Administrator for. All went like clockwork until the restart.
Normally the screen should show the username and only need the password but both entries were blank, as in ‘Other’ sign in option available only. I entered her name and password, nothing….used her username and password, nothing. Used my old Administrator name and password, NOTHING!
I tried defaulting to factory settings from the Restore feature but it directs me to notify Apple. I tried in Terminal to change the password, nothing. I tried to boot from MY external drive and it doesn’t recognize it. I tried to even use my external drive which actually has the Mavericks upgrade, nothing!
Basically I can only get the startup screen which isn’t accepting the username/password or the Restore feature which doesn’t offer any options helpful!
Please, how do I start from scratch and start over here? Or simply change the Administrator name and password so I can proceed with everything thats already on there? I wish I could even boot from another drive but no luck on anything!

First, on the old machine, make your wife's account an admin one. Log into it and delete yours. Then, update the TM backup. Finally, use Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, erase the HD, and restore the OS. One first boot, follow the steps outlined in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • Disply Brightness on new 15" 2.5 GHz MBP Seem Low

Hello - I just bought a new 15" 2.5 GHz MBP, I exchanged it for the 2.4 I bought a week ago. The MBP is connected to a 23" Cinema Display, and all seems good. It seems that the brightness settings on the MBP are darker than on the 23". When I have the brightness slider in the same position for the Display and on the MBP - in the middle lets say, the MBP is noticably darker. It seems that the display was brighter (whiter whites) on the 2.4 that I had previously. Also when I slide the brightness slider all the way to the left on the MBP the screen goes completely dark, where as on the 23" Display it gets dark but I can still see my desktop. I wanted to know if this was normal for the 2.5 MBP or is my display not working properly? Thanks.

Insert you Leopard installer disk and reboot while holding down the 'c' key. Select your language and from the Utilities menu select Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and run Repair Disk.

  • Previously installed Aperture3 on an iMac and a MBP. I Bought a new MBA to replace the MBP and I want to install Aperture3 on the new MBA.  The installer says the serial code is invalid? What do I do?

I previously bought Aperture 3 and installed in on an iMac and a MBP.  I just bought a new MBA to replace the MBP, but the MBA doesn't have enough memory for me to do a complete restore of the MBP on the MBA.  So I am trying to find a way to deactivate the serial code or Aperture 3 on the MBP so I can reinstall Aperture 3 on the MBA.  I have been searching forums and google and I have not been any answers.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

How did you buy Aperture? Did you buy it from the App Store? Then you can download it again on your MBA, if you sign into the App Store.
If you bought Aperture buy buying a licence key to unlock the trial, try if this download link for the trial version still works: if yes, you can unlock it with your serial number:
    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Aperture/061-8328 .20101020.AprE3/ApertureTrial3.1.dmg
And if you own the boxed DVD installer , use the DVD to install Aperture on your MBA. If the installer does not work - and you get the message
"check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of Mac OS X"
you may have a problem with an expired developer certificate (they expired mid march).
To fix this, set the Date  in " SystemPreferences -> Date&Time" to a date well before March 2012 and run the Installer again. If that succeeds and Aperture now runs, reset the date to the current date.
You can see your serial number in the "About" panel in the main Aperture menu bar on your MBP:
    Aperture > About Aperture.
For the "invaldid serial number" see these links: You may have read the letters incorrectly - some are look alike, "1" or "I", "0" or "O"; your shift-lock key may be set.

How long does it typically take to update new apple products?  I'm speaking in terms of software/firmware updates.  My new Apple TV and iPad 3 are glitchy, which is extremely frustrating considering I have the last gen of each sitting there working flawlessly.

I appreciate the responses, however my initial post was too vague. I apologize and will explain.  The specific issues are the window closes occasionally when loading something large, that has ceased in the last day or two. My battery life is no where near the second gens, is that the extra hardware at work? I thought that had been accounted for? One of the frustrating, albeit humorous occurrences is when I placed the second and third gen within 1 foot of each other, turned off LTE, and streamed a video.  From every location the second gen out ran the new model on 3G signal, lol.  Not a huge deal since I have wi-fi or LTE pretty much everywhere I am, but disappointing none the less.
The new apple tv is great, except for the same thing everyone is posting about. HD iTunes library streaming taking overly extended load times. I don't expect it will take too long  for apple to address that issue. I'm new to apple, last 6 months, but they seem to have excellent support!  It is definetly highly rated.

  • I recently bought 13" mbp 2012 and I noticed that I only got 2HRS max and the only thing Im doing is watch movies on VLC and surf the net. How long does you mbp battery last?

I recently bought 13" mbp 2012 and I noticed that I only got 2HRS max and the only thing Im doing is watch movies on VLC and surf the net. How long does you mbp battery last?

That listed 7 hours is with very limited use. Low screen brightness, low keyboard backlight, No WiFi or bluetooth.
Most I have ever gotten from my 15" 2011 model is around 5-6 hours and that was with very light use. Just Web, Chrome, and email, thunderbird, and Wifi.

  • Some one is having problems with the timed access in airport last gen?

I have timed access to the airport, but it seems do not work fine... I have the list of the computer that can have acces to my wifi network , but all people how has the password can go in to my wifi network.
Any one with this problem to?

    Airport Extreme 7.7.2 (Last Gen)

Unfortunately I have the same problem... teaches me not to be one of the first few people to upgrade.  I guess I won't be upgrading to the iphone 5s for a while.
In any case, last night I requested to update to see the new iRadio feature.  This morning I came back and saw the dumb light blinking.
This is too bad... love the products until now, but this feels wrong that now I have to get a mini usb connection just for this.
C'mon Apple... get the things right!  At least pull the plug on the upgrade, don't get millions of people upset.

  • Last Gen APE working with AP Utility 5.1

    Hi Guys,
    I have an issue here.
At my house I have a new APEn and at my apartment
I have a last gen APE.
When I got the new APEn I installed the new software
(AP Utility and AP Disk Utility)
I was happy to see new software and proceeded to delete
the old AP Admin Utility 4.2
Now when I open AP Utility 5.2 when I get to my apartment
it doesn't recognize the last gen APE at all.
This confuses me because in the help software that came
with 5.2, in the first screen is a picture of the
admin utility open with all the current and last gen
APE and AP express models fully recognized.
So do I need to reinstall the old software or is there
    something I'm missing.
    Thanks
    -FTIWL

The new AirPort Utility is designed to work with either generation of the AirPort Extreme and the Express base stations. When installed, a separate utility specifically for the older AirPorts: Snow or Graphite is also installed.
Try temporarily connecting your computer directly, using an Ethernet cable, to your older AEBS, and then run the AirPort Utility to configure it. Are you able to access it now?

  • How do I use my iMac(late 2009) as a monitor for my MBP(2012) or my MBP(late 2010) without software?

I currently have a late 2009 iMac, a 2012 MBP, a mid 2010 MBP and a MinDisplay Port (MDP) male to male cable. I am trying to either use the iMac a second monitor for one of the MBPs or mirror the display.
The iMac has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
The MBP 2010 has a MDP port and is running OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion)
The MBP 2012 has a Thunderbolt port and is running OS X 10.9 (Maverics)
When I connect the 2010 MBP to the iMac with the MDP cable the screen of the iMac goes black and the MBP flashes blue. I have been looking for a solution and I have tried:
Rebooting them in the order of: connecting the cable, turing on the MBP, then turing on the iMac
Whilst they are on simply plugging the cable between the two
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the MBP
Connecting them with the cable while they are on, then pressing cmd-f1 on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the iMac, whilst there are connected, only toggles a black screen on the iMac
Pressing cmd-f2 on the MBP doesn't do anything
Every time I connect the MBP 2012 to the iMac with the MDP cable, the MBP screen goes black and the computor screen becomes unresponsive but the screen stays on and I have to reboot the MBP.
I will really appreciate anyone who has any information on this topic.
    Thanks

Tabs only open in a new window. Ctl T opens a new window NOT a new tab help-last update this problem started 2 days ago. How do I set FF back to open tabs in 1 window?
There is no plus sign and going into optins and changing settings has not worked. I have uninstall FF and reinstall-keeping my personalization-and that was no help.
Right clicking on FF Icon to open a new tab, or going up to FF drop down tab and clicking on new tab both do not work.
Help everything opens a new window not a new tab. there seems to be no way to reset this or to chose a different optin. I just downloaded new tabs at end addon and it didn't do a thing.

as a first troubleshooting step - does it work like normally when you open & run firefox in [[Safe Mode|safemode]] by pressing the shift key while you open firefox (all other instances have to be closed before)...
