New MBP w/lion; upgraded to iLife11 but iPhoto won't open old library?

I bought a new macbook pro in september. After completing a vacation iMovie, I noticed the new MBP didn't have iDVD on it to burn to send discs to family. I purchased iLife11 for this program but it also updated iPhoto. Pretty cool until I tried to open iPhoto11 and it won't open the old version's library... why? More importantly, how do I get around it? I have a Time Capsule so a backup or two exist if necessary... just want to get this project done without killing the hole weekend! Thanks!

As usual... found the answer after I posted this. I updated the upgrade when I installed iLife11 yesterday. It worked but I still had the problem. I thought I would try it again today to see if there were any additional updates... and KAPOW... there was, and problem FIXED! Thanks!

Did you run the iPhoto Library Upgrader on your library? Just downloading it isn't enough.  Go to your Applications/Utilities folder and launch iPhoto Library Upgrader V1.1 and run it on your library.
Did you upgrade iPhoto to 9.6.1 via the App Store?  If so launch iPhoto 9.6.1 and open the library.

  • Latest upgrade - downloaded and now iPhoto won't open

Downloaded the latest upgrade. Then tried to open iPhoto, but it won't open, nor can I close iPhoto, it is just hanging there. Any suggestions please? Thanks.

    What version are you using?

  • IPhoto won't open my library, it says I made changes with a newer version?

I D/L'ed iPhoto library manager so that I could split my library because my startup disk is overfilling everytime I try to import photos. I tried using iPhoto lib manager to split my library into two. I created a new library. I also created a new album I dumped my pictures from '03-'07 into. After I did this IpHOTO started saying my original library was made by a newer version of iPhoto and couldn't be opened. I opened the library package to make sure I didn't lose 8000 pictures, luckily all of my pictures were still in the library and organized like usual (folders by year, month, and day). I was able to re-import all of my pictures but as you can imagine the dates were messed up, multiple events with only one picture yet there are 10 separate events for the same day and it also imported a bunch of low res thumbnails (AARRRGH!).
The library manager still lets me choose to open my old library in iPhoto but when IpHOTO launches it gives me the error of being made by a newer version. I even bought iLife '09 *$$* to upgrade to the newest version of iPhoto available. I can still see my old albums in the library manager when my old library is selected but when I try to drag them into my new library I get this error message.
"The library "iPhoto Library" needs to be upgraded to work with iPhoto version 8.0.3 before you can copy photos from it. Please open the library and let iPhoto upgrade it, then try the copy again."
However I can't open this library with the newest version of iPhoto because when I do it says ..
"You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."!?
What the? I'm using the newest version of iPhoto!! It couldn't have been changed by a newer version of iPhoto because there ISN'T ONE!
This is soooo frustrating. I've dealt with corrupt iTunes folders all mixed up, with unknown errors occurring when I've tried to update to 10.5.6 and I've figured them both out but this is my bane at the current time!
Any help would be greatly appreciated to keep my photos and vids organized. thanks much,
    Tim

Unless you opened the Library with a later version, then this is sometimes a symptom of database corruption.
And one cause of library corruption is operating without adequate free disk space
You must have a minimum of 10GB of free disk space to safely operate your Mac. Since you are having notices of inadequate space you almost certainly have much less than that - and the problem is exactly that - nothing to do with any program including iPhoto or IPLM
You must free up space now before you can do anything to recover your photos - adding an external drive is the quickest and easiest

  • Cloned HD running Snow Leopard won't boot in new MBP running Lion., cloned HD running Snow Leopard won't boot in new MBP running Lion.

Hi, I've seen a lot of discussion on this topic but nothing specific to my situation.  I have two macs, a personal mac (macbook running Snow Leopard vers. 10.6) and a newer work macbook pro (late 2011 running Lion vers. 10.7.5).  I want to use some of the applications at work (that is on the Macbook Pro) that are on my home macbook with Snow Leopard.  I cloned the entire HD of my Macbook onto an external drive.  The clone seems to have worked as I can use it as a boot disk for the macbook (from which it was cloned).  However, if I try to boot the MacBook Pro running Lion, with this same clone on the external drive it won't work.  I get a bit of text in the background and an overlay in dark grey saying (in several languages) restart the Mac by holding down the start key etc.  I don't know if this has to do with the kernel panic problem or the Lion restore disk business.  I don't see the point in trying to do an internal partition of the MacBook Pro hard drive and then add the cloned Snow Leopard, if I can't get the thing to boot externally as it is.
Does anyone have any fixes for what really should be a simple proceedure but is not?

Make sure the mac you are cloning from has the combo 10.6.8 update applied to it. The late 2011 models need at least 10.6.7 and better with 10.6.8. So if your older mac is running anything lower than 10.6.7 it will not boot on the 2011 model.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite my iPhoto won't open, update not allowed

Recently updated to Yosemite and now my iPhoto can't be opened, I tried to update the app from the App Store but it tells me that I am not the original purchaser (I am, I've never had another Apple account).

Recently updated to Yosemite and now my iPhoto can't be opened, I tried to update the app from the App Store but it tells me that I am not the original purchaser (I am, I've never had another Apple account).
The error message is not very appropriate. It essentially means, that the iPhoto that is currently installed on your Mac is not associated with your AppleID.  It may suffice to accept iphoto and other iLife applications to your AppleID.
Sign into the App Store with your AppleID (from the Store menu), open the "Purchases" tab and check, if there are any preinstalled apps that need accepting. Then press the "Accept" button.
Now try again to update or reinstall.
If iPhoto does not show on the Purchases tab at all, delete iPhoto from the applications folder (don't empty the Trash), then go to the main tab of the Apple Store (the Featured tab), enter iPhoto in the search field, and install.

  • My Backup Failed! files are there but iPhoto won't open!

had all my media (photos, music) on an external since the libraries wouldn't fit on my internal hardrive of my MacBook Pro.  it totally failed, so my brother was able to get all the files and file folders onto a different external.  However, iPhoto keeps telling me to rebuild/restore/etc.  the actual photos are all in a folder labled "masters" so i know they're there, but how can I get iPhoto to see those files again? I suppose i could just import the "masters" folder, but would I then lose all the days/events?

    1.  Unless you have two copies of your iPhoto library on two different drives you do not have a backup
    2. Try rebuilding. Depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild the library
If that does not solve it post back

  • Upgraded to photos now itunes won't open photo library.

Had to restore photo library from Time Machine backup due to kids deleting it. Restored OK, opened Photos app and migrated library, works fine in photos app.
However in iTunes under the sync photos tab with iPhone, photo library is greyed out and I cannot select it.
    Any ideas?

    Hello, bas.harbers.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that iTunes will not allow you to select and library to sync with after upgrading to Photos.  It sounds like you may just need to set Photos as the system library preference.  Here is the article that will walk you through this process.

  • IPhoto won't open since Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi,
Since upgrading to snow leopard iPhoto won't open, it just crashes instantly. I ahve tried reinstalling with no luck.
    Can anybody help with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan.

i just bought a new MBP 13'' 2.53 Ghz 4Gb Ram 250GB HD... i tried moving my iPhoto library from my powerbook g4 1.67 machine that was running 10.4.11 (via a Lacie external)
once i moved this and opened iPhoto (on my new MBp running 10.6.1 - SNOW LEOPARD) it instantly asks me to upgrade the library (saying that the old library needs upgrading for this version), so i click upgrade, and then 2 seconds later it says that the library is corrupt and damaged and i must install from a back up...
I deleted iPhoto then emptied trash after clearing up some space on the external, meaning i lost iPhoto applicaton - IDIOT I KNOW - so i download iPhoto 8.1 and the library upgrade and error / damaged library message appeared again...
I have now, (as i type this right now) re-installed snow leopard from the snow leopard disk that came in the MBP box (i have had it like 2 weeks, thats it, it shipped with leopard and i am having to install SNOW LEOPARD, for the 2nd time) to get iPhoto back)... will this give me iPhoto back, or do i have to re-install from the LEOPARD OS disks that were sent in the MBP box, the OS that it shipped with?
i am very annoyed that it seems that my iPhoto library from a 3.75year old machine cant be on my new machine unless i re-add each PBG4Tiger10.4.11 individual library folder thru the interface of iPhoto on my new machine... (if indeed it will ever open)...
    PLEASE HELP !

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • I just upgraded to lion but mainstage won't open

just upgraded from snow leopard 10.6.8 to lion 10.7.3 yesterday.  logic 9.1.6 works fine but mainstage won't open.  it stops at the "initializing graphics" stage and goes no further.  i also note that the icon idicates it is version 2.0.0 which i thought was an earlier version but i'm not sure.  could lion have transformed mainstage back to an earlier version and not done the same to logic?  how weird!!
    any recommendations?

Contact this address below and request a new download, and that the one you have does not open or it crash whe doing so.
They open up my account and allowed me to reinstall.
My redowndloaded Mainstage is now working on my MacB Pro, and four [4] externals, with out any problems.
Hope this will help others, who are having a problem with Mainstage v 2.2.1

How did you "move everything" over?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help?

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • Hey i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge

i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge. I tried using a friends MBP charger of the same year as my computer but it still says not charging at the top right corner of the computer screen where the charging symbol is. I tired doing all of the suggested techniques to fix it but not luck.
This is the battery report is when my MBP is either connected to my charger or my friends charger which works perfectly on her computer.
