New MBP won't back up, disc full

I've searched around here and although I found similar question, never really found an answer:
I have a new MacBookPro and want to use Time Machine to back it up. I get a message that there is insufficient space on my 1Gb TC. I thought it would automatically delete old b/u's to make room for new.
There are b/u's of my old MBP on the drive. I would like to retain at least the latest one as my son is using the old MBP, but remove most of them to make room for the new guy.
I open the Time Machine, I get the window with the stacked b/u's showing, arrows up and down, and a time bar on the right side of the screen but I cannot navigate through the pages. It is stuck on today.
Is there a way to remove older b/u's manually to make room. I do not need 500Gb of old b/u's sitting there. I've already got 5 externals,(photographer) I'd like to NOT get another.
Thanks for any guidance.

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

  • New MBP won't turn on unless it's on AC power

So, my new MBP won't power on unless it's plugged in. It had 80% charge left. The sleep/wake light was on, but the keyboard was unresponsive and the screen remained off. This happened out of the box, so I charged it, and thought that was it. This morning it did the same thing again. But NOW it seems to be working again. I'd hate for this to happen again, after I can return it. I've tried to replicate the problem but to no avail. Any ideas?
The wake on AC power is not an issue here.

I've had my Macbook for 2 months now. Yesterday VLC was whining that my CPU wasn't fast enough to run a video. Then about 1-2 houras after when I was opening a video in VLC it just froze. After wondering what happened a screen appeared telling me to restart computer and how to do it in 5 languages, the screen also had some color lines in it. OK so I shut it down and turned it back on.
Then it flashed blue screen for less than second and then the screen was all black. Fan was running and the led in front panel was on. Also it doesn't keep the umm..starting sound and doesn't respond when I press the keys (or at least num/capslock won't turn on). Now it just keeps doing that all the time I try turning it on.
I tried resetting PMU but didn't help. I don't have Tiger CD's here so I can't try starting it with them. I wonder what broke up, guess I'll have to take it to Apple authorized care.

  • New MBP won't let me access backups from MyPassport drive

I have a WD MyPassport external drive with an extensive amount of backup data on it. I recently bought a new MBP and while I can access general files on my disk I am not allowed to access my backups. There is a red icon that says I do not have permission, even though when I look at the drive info it says I have read/write permission. Can someone please advise how I might be able to regain access to my backups?
    Thank you!

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the "sparsebundle" file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • New MBP won't see Panasonic HVX

    Hello,
I have a new MBP and a Panasonic HVX 200. When I try to connect the camera to the computer (with an adapter cable) the computer won't see the camera. It still comes up on my old iMac (via 400). Any thoughts on what the fix is?
    Thanks.
    Wolf

Wolfwill23: Sounds like a bad cable or adapter. If you're using the same 400->400 cable to connect the camera to the iMac, and adding a 400->800 adapter when connecting to the MBP, then the adapter is probably bad. If you're using a 400->400 cable with the iMac and a 400->800 cable with the MBP, then the latter cable is suspect.

  • My new ipad won't back up from iCloud

I just got a new iPad wi-fi/4G LTE and for some reason it won't back up from my iCloud account. When I'm setting up my new iPad it says no back ups available even though I have my old iPad set to receive back ups from iCloud.

Go to Settings>General>Reset and tap Erase All Content and Settings.  This will erase your device.  Then you will go through the setup screens again as you did when your device was new, and when given the option, select Restore from iCloud Backup.

  • New MBP won't print with Wifi HP All-in-one that it cam with from Apple

Hey, all just got a new MBP and the free HP all in one wireless printer.
After installing all the software and drivers I managed to bonjour it through our router or direct through USB.
    Same on my iMAc
However, Wifi will hang for a few minutes , then start to print and then finish on the print queue but the page will be half printer etc.. With USB it prints straight away and complete pages.
Is this a bug in the drivers or what?
    Thanks all,

iTunes, iPhoto, and Safari all use the same protocol for wireless device finding for shared items as the printer. Bonjour may be holding things up, if other items are attempting to share data over the network.

Hi Carolyn thanks for your help, is 10.7.3 the latest software.
It is the latest point release of the Lion operating system. This does not contain any other softeware updates.
Check that the clock is set correctly. Check that your region (country) is set correctly. Reboot and try Software Update again.
I will disagree here, use the combo updater, in fact, always use the combo updater.
So the Combo updater updates all software also? itunes, iphoto Garage band and all other included software?
Funny I can't find that info anywhere on the Apple release notes for Combo updaters.

  • New MBP won't start up

I have a brand new 13" Macbook Pro, just a few days old, which I have barely used or had time to set up yet. Last night I shut the lid and it went into sleep mode. The battery was almost full. This morning I opened the lid and it came on instantly as expected, but before I could do anything the screen dimmed and a message box appeared in the middle of the screen with the message that I needed to power down the laptop and then reboot it! This was in about five languages (I think - I never really took much notice before I switched off) When I tried to turn it back on, it simply won't start. When you push the power button, the 'power/sleep' light on the front lights up briefly then goes off again. The battery charge is still the same as last night i.e. almost full (all bar the last two LED's come on) I tried the SMC reset but it makes no difference. It simply won't power up. Obviously I will be taking it back to the Apple store, but I wondered if anyone else has had the message appear and why? And then fail to boot!

As I'm new to this forum, I'm not sure how it is supposed to work, but it is certainly not like others I have used! What is happening here? I edited my post and it shows at the bottom that it was edited, yet the edited post does not appear - it is still the same as the original! None of the added text appears.
I tried to add that there were no programs running and it was on battery when closed at night and when opened this morning. I've also tried it on mains power, but it makes no difference. It still appears to charge correctly judging by the power lead and laptop LEDs. It just won't turn on.

  • New MBP won't connnect to network PowerMac G5!

I'm getting just ever so slightly frustrated. Ordered a MBP in February and it showed up defective. Back to Apple for repairs for 3 and 1/2 WEEKS! Finally, came back but password wasn't reset and I didn't give them my admin (they didn't start up the Mac to see if the trackpad was working after replacement). Bad install of new part--back to Apple for ANOTHER week! Used the MBP for about 5 months and decided to sell. Sold it in 12 hours for same price as I paid for it!!! Immediately ordered new model MBP with LED backlight and 4gig RAM max. Took a month to come in (glossy screen is made to order online and stock item at Apple Store!). The screen would only go back to 90 degrees and the DVD player stopped working. Apple declare THIS one a DOA and authorized an exchange. Waited 2 weeks for it to come in and Apple said that it wouldn't be shipped as promised but would be shipped after the 24th of October! As a tech, can't be without it that long, so refund (still not in account after 10 business days) and went to Apple Store to buy one off shelf.
Okay, brought that home and all was okay (so far). Tried to wirelessly connect to my wired to router PowerMac G5--no problem. Did some updates and tried again the next day. No go. Unauthorized, wrong password, etc. message and lots of spinning beach balls of death (BBOD). Restarted both machines, still same problem. Checked and rechecked the connections and Sharing preferences and all seems fine. Can connect to internet and mail, but not my local PowerMac. Just installed REmot Desktop on the MBP and that wouldn't work from afar either.
Any ideas would be very appreciated!!!
    Sincerely,
    Jeff

  • Why does the new version not have back-up disc in the library file? And how do I fix it?

Why does the new version of i-tunes not have back-up to disc in the library file? And how do I fix it?

Fast backup for iTunes library  (Windows)
Grab SyncToy  2.1, a free tool from MS. This can be used to copy your entire iTunes library (& other important data folders) onto another hard drive or network share. You can then use SyncToy periodically to synchronise or echo your library to the backup. A preview will show which files need to be updated giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the new or updated files will be copied saving lots of time.
If your media is all organised below the main iTunes folder then you should also be able to open the backup library on any system running the same version of iTunes, regardless of the drive letter or path it appears on.

  • New MBP won't mount some CD/DVDs; why?

When i insert certain CD/DVDs the optical drive clicks and buzzes three times before spitting the disk out again. Even the Leopard install disk that came in the box won't mount.
Strangely every type of blank media that i have tried works without any problems, as well as a select number of DVDs and CDs (the Remote Desktop install DVD and some music CDs work perfectly). I had no problems burning disks either.
Could this strange behavior be caused by minute differences in the size of the hole in the middle of the CD/DVD?
I don't live close to an Apple Store so i would like to try to solve this myself, as i am reasonably technically competent. Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice

Got the same problem on y brand new 17". The optical drive doesn't mount most DVDs, including the System Installer DVDs included with the Mac. The disc gets pulled into the slot, but then the drive seems to have difficulties holding on to it. There is a constant rhythmic "seeking" sound (or sometimes a disturbig noise like a broken washing machine) and after about a minute, the disc gets ejected. Strangely, about 10% of the roughly 30 commercial DVDs I've tried are always accepted and being played without a problem. Those that won't mount reliably don't, but play perfectly fine in two other computers. Something's a bit loose here, it seems...

  • New MBP won't play my DVD's

Just bought a new 13" MBP.
I want to watch my DVDs when I am on the road.
I live in England now, but recently lived in the US and have several hundred DVDs I purchased there.
I have also bought a bunch of DVDs here in the UK, the Tesco £3 made them attractive.
But the MBP says it will only let me change the Region Code 5 times and I have hundreds of DVDs and changing it depending on where I purchased it seems a little off.
How do I get my MBP to allow me to watch DVDs that I purchased legally when I lived in both countries.
It seems to me the only way to proceed is for me to illegally rip them and break the copy protection so I can watch movies that I own.
Very strange deal when you have to break the law in order to use something you purchased!!
Any other ideas would be gratefully received.
    Thanks

I would expect that they could, anytime you have a major paradigm shift in market/technology you can always find some vested interest to argue the case.
We have been having them in the UK for several hundred years, the Petersfield riots when we moved to the Gregorian Calendar as it was understood it would shorten our lives, the Luddite Riots in the 18th (?) century when weaving moved from a cottage industry to a factory.
You can bet all those passionate people could put together an argument to defend the way things are.
The only difference now is that the very corporations that formed their industry are losing control and cannot work out how to move forward.
The Newspaper industry is dying in the US because Craig's List ate their lunch, time to evolve.
The copyright defences they are deploying today would have crippled their industry when they started their 'new technology' companies. Not so keen on an level playing field now they are established and the latest New Tech is rendering them obsolete.
We are watching their death rattle, just make sure you don't get bitten on their way out

  • MBP won't re-start with full USB hub

Sometimes, when I choose Re-start from the Apple menu, my 2012 15" MacBook Pro w/Retina Display  just shuts down.
I have done a PRM reset, and a CMS reset, and that didn’t solve it.
I did an Apple Hardware Test, and it reported “No trouble found”.
So I unplugged the the Satechi USB 3.0 hub and re-started, and it worked.
Then I plugged the USB hub back in and removed all the peripherals from it, so its ports were empty, and Re-start worked.
Then I started adding peripherals one by one, and discovered when they were all plugged in (USB modem, printer, label printer and scanner), that's when the problems occurred. Re-start would shut the computer down, I'd hear the start-up tone, and then it would sit there, black, with no Apple logo. As soon as I unplugged the USB hub, the Apple logo would appear and re-booting would finish.
So my fix is to remove one peripheral (the USB modem) from the hub, and leave the hub plugged into the MBP. So far, it's working fine. Re-starts work great.
Here's my first question: is having "too many" USB peripherals plugged in at once known to cause start-up or re-start problems?
Second question: during all this testing, I found that the MBP's power button sometimes did not shut the MBP down until I held it for ten seconds. And sometimes (but not always) holding it down - even for ten seconds - would not start the MBP. I'd have to try 2, sometimes 3 times, to get it turned back on. This hasn't happened since I lightened the USB load, but might this be indicative of a power supply problem on the MBP, or is it likely related to the USB load?
Thanks in advance for any advice or answers.

Yes, having too many devices in the hub can definitely be a problem. The ports are not powered so they take power from the computer. Too many devices causes the computer to try and shut down the ports which it can't do properly in the middle of a restart. The total power the USB ports can draw is around 15 watts - 7.5 watts per port for two ports.
