New memory installation gone awry.. please advise

Hi, i have a 1 year old macbook pro 2.2ghz, with 2gig memory and i purchased a Kingston 2gig memory stick to install and replace one of the 1gig sticks
which i thought i did successfully, it seemed easy enough.
However, when i turned my computer back on, it was just a black screen
and the sleep light was flashing
so i powered the computer off. took out the Kingston memory
and put the old 1gig memory stick back in
The computer successfully turned on as usual, but now my computer is only reading one of my memory stick slots.
Does this mean something terribly expensively bad happened or did i not re-install it correctly?
I have an appointment at the "Genius" Bar today, and i have applecare, do i tell them exactly what happened? Does this affect my coverage? or is it something completely simple, that i just am overlooking or not doing correctly.

From reading other posts on this, I've learned that performing your own RAM upgrades is totally cool under apple care and doesn't affect your warranty. In any event, I see you live in NYC, as do I and I've always found the dudes at the Genius bar to be cool, so I'd tell them exactly what you've done and they should take care of you.

AHHH! Leopard installation gone awry, please help!

Okay, so here's what happened. I had my husband's iBook G4, and I was installing Leopard on it, with the idea that he would be happy about it when he got home from work. So I started installing Leopard. At about 1/20th through the installation, my husband got home (it took slower than I expected) and said that he would like to use his computer, and wanted to install it later. So I quit out of the installer, and rebooted to the disk. Now it's stuck on the gray loading screen with the apple on it, and that small circular loading bar, and is has been for a good ten minutes. Any advice? Please, I really need help!

If it's not too late, here is a suggestion. If you have access to another Mac (yours, a friends, whatever) boot your husbands iBook into target disk mode and copy his data before you do anything else. It's quite possible that in order to recover from the botched install, you will end up having to erase the drive and start over in which case the data will be lost. Also, after you have recovered from this, smack you "producer" husband in the head with a stick and make him go get an external drive to back up his data. Or get him one as an early C-mas gift. Shocking in this day and age to have no backups!
PS The above assumes you know how to use TD mode. If not, post back for instructions....

Find the old Aperture library in the Finder and double click it to launch Aperture with that library set to the default.
And check your caps look key. It appears to be stuck.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

Big problem with new WD Caviar Green HDD, please advise!

I bought a new Western Digital Caviar Green HDD 1TB, ( WD10EADS ) it is a SATA 3Gb/s interface HDD, 3.5-inch form factor. the RPM = IntelliPower (NOT 7200 RPM or 5400 RPM which means Rotate automatically depends on the needs of fetching data I suppose?)
I acknowledged that this series of HDD which three of 6 have the same Power Management which Read/Write = 4.9W / Idle = 2.8W / Standby = 0.4 W / Sleep = 0.4W
They are differ from the other 3, which 500GB one is 4.1W / 2.2W / 0.8W / 0.8W and 1.5TB is 4.73W 2.75W / 0.72W / 0.72W; 2TB is 6W 3.7W 0.8W 0.8W
Which mean the Standby and Sleep mode are the same state.
Now my big problem is, I bought an external dock SI-7908UI for this WD Caviar Green HDD.

So I first put the HDD into the SI-7908UI Dock ( USB 2.0 / eSATA / Firewire 400 /800 )
I tried many way of sequence of who power on first? WD Caviar Power on first? or Mac mini Power on first? I found that the best way is Mac mini Power on first, then Power on the external HDD.
OK, before I address my big problem, I should let you know, I found that there is NO S.M.A.R.T. working when you put a S.M.A.R.T. HDD outside the Mac or PC. In Dock, the S.M.A.R.T. won't work, That's how I saw in System Profiler, the FireWire tab says " S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported "
and I did test a Non-Green Maxtor HDD, the S.M.A.R.T. doesn't show either. You'll need this info before the real problem I'm gonna say in the following.
NOW, about 10~15 minutes after my Mac mini boot, if I didn't fetch anything from my external HDD, it would goes to sleep itself, that confirmed that the Specification Sheet was true, the Idle = 2.8W and I believe it goes to Idle, NOT Standby or Sleep, which I also believe the Standby or Sleep signal is supposed to be given by Mac OS, but it sounds like Standby or Sleep, BECAUSE the WD HDD suddenly not rotate and the sound it appears that it goes to SLEEP, am I right? I keep Mac awake by browsing the web so Mac mini won't go to sleep (I set 10 minutes in Energy Saver and I checked Put the HDD to sleep when possible)
Well, That is my big problem when WD Green HDD goes to sleep, because I CAN'T wake it up, NOT eject or Shut down the Mac mini. (OK, I'm NOT sure if it goes to Sleep or Idle)
First I thought it freezes the whole Mac OS, then I found I still can move many things, such as I am doing right now, post this big problem here. but I am sure the others are freeze! and no matter how many time I click Shut Down or Restart or Force Quit, the Mac mini didn't respond.
I tried to figure it out because I don't want to Shut Down by force.(5 seconds Press the Power button)
then I found that if I power down the external dock 7908-UI when Mac fail to shut down/restart/or eject the external HDD, It worked.
And the Mac OS will appear a window says that "I shouldn't unplug an external device without Ejecting it first" something like that. and suddenly it shuts down very quickly, everything back to normal, it shut down successfully.
What am I gonna do with this? Am I going to power down my external HDD first every time I want to shut down/eject/restart? Because the Eject the external HDD will cause freeze too! Freeze Finder I suppose.
Is it caused by 7908-UI ? or Caused by WD Caviar's Green Power management?
Because I don't trust 7908-UI, it doesn't look like a trusted brand, I've never heard of this SSI company anyway.
What am I gonna do? Please advise.

Please realise that I am not the right person to be asking. I pointed you to a thread where, as a Moderator at the Bombich forums, I felt the need to warn users of CCC that a WD drive might cause problems. The thread mainly just copies what WD have said.
Obviously your drive will respond/awake/spin up when you access it manually. Some of the problems are...
•  Most users want to be in control of whether and/or when a drive sleeps -- WD's auto-sleep cannot be disabled and so precludes that.
•  Most users want their drive to obey settings in Energy Saver -- the WD auto-sleep mechanism doesn't allow that.
•  Most users want a scheduled cloning/backup to take place during the night. The cloning app starting the backup process should cause the target drive, if sleeping, to wake/spin up so that the process can take place -- it does for all drives except WD drives where the auto-sleep mechanism used doesn't allow it. LaCie drives, for instance, have auto-sleep +as an option+, during which the drive will respond to Energy Saver settings and to software such as a cloning app.
Please, Mauricette, put you questions/concerns/problems to the reseller or to WD, both of whom took your money without warning you. I am NOT a WD expert! ...or lover! ( ) I became more than disenchanted when I saw that a) WD do not point out the limitations of their external drives at point of sale, and b) WD put the blame for these inadequacies/problems/limitations onto Apple, ignoring the fact that no drives other than WD drives have them.

After Transfer to new imac - seriel number invalid - Please Advise

I recently purchased a new imac for the use of video editing in Final Cut Studio. When I input the Serial number provided with my software I get a error stating it is an upgrade serial number and I am prompted to input the previous serial number. I also input the original serial number and I get a message stating that the serial number is invalid. Do I need to remove FCP from my previous computer in order to use it on my new computer? Please advise.

We have mac os X 10.5.8 we tried to upgrade with the new firefox 4. it removed our old firefox and replaced it with firefox 4. Now we get a message that our system does not support the new firefox. All our bookmarks settings are gone. Please advise.

Many of you have had problems with Spotify for Mac OS X 10.5. We no longer support Spotify on this operating system which we announced back in November here as a "heads up".
However, we've noticed that many folks have been updating regardless which should not be the case. Our intention was to let anyone using Mac OS X10.5 continue using a "legacy" version of Spotify. In any case, the folks who were using 10.5 were updated, and in many cases these customers have experienced crashes with the newest version of the application (Spotify version 0.8.8. at the time of writing).
To make a long story short, we messed up in updating folks who should not have been updated and we're sorry. We plan on fixing the problem of Spotify updating to the latest version for Mac OSX 10.5 users and we're working on it as I write this. If you're a person who has already upgraded and the application is crashing, we're looking into a solution and we hope to have an update shortly.

New HDD not working. Please advise.

Today i purchased a new internal hdd for my 5.53 ghz macbook pro. I purchased the seagate momentus 500 gb 7200 rpm drive as suggested by users. The installation was fine, however i am having several issues with the drive. I boot into the 10.6 install cd and try to install. It says the drive is not journaled. So i try to reformatt using the mac os journaled format, and it locks up and often doesn't complete. i verified the disk, and everything checked out, however i just don't know what im doing wrong as i've never had this problem before. Should i install with the disk that came with the mbp first? Please adise. Thank you!

I suspect there is a problem with how you are trying to format the drive. Follow Kappy's instructions and post back if you still have problems.

ITunes Sorting gone crazy - please advise!!!

I've recently refreshed my PC and reinstalled iTunes (9.2.1.5) and I imported my library back into it so I could get back to business as usual, but this time iTunes decided to start acting a fool.
Typically, my library is sorted by Album Artist, that way if I have an album that has multiple artists, I can keep them intact under iTunes without having a thousand different entries for the same album. Then, under that everything sorts out just fine - there's no need to worry about the tracks being out of order or any other silliness.
However this time, I have had to fight to get the albums to display properly. Many of them come up as "unknown artist, unknown album" on the cover flow, even when the file info is fully intact. I usually have to tinker with each album 5 or six times to get this to go away, which has become especially time consuming.
But that's not what really irks me. After everything gets sorted properly for an album, the stupid tracks are out of order - for no reason at all! There is no pattern that iTunes is using to sort the track numbers, as I have checked each field to figure out what is going on... I know there is no way to sort by album artist, then by track number, but this program should be smart enough to figure out something as basic as that!

You can allocate extra memory to a Java program by putting something like
java -Xmx256m Myclass
That should tell you if running out of memory is really your problem.
Memory from abandoned items isn't recovered until the JVM decides to do a "garbage collection" which it doesn't usually bother with until it finds memory a bit tight.
You shouldn't cast byte input to char. In Java a character is a 16 bit UNICODE code value, and it's relationship with bytes depends on the "character encoding", by default the one native to your operating system.
If you want to read character input from a file etc. then use a Reader not an InputStream. If necessary you can "wrap" an input stream in an InputStreamReader object.
If you want to read it from the user in a Swing program then use an input field of some sort.

My mail shuts down when i open new mail??? Please advise...

On my iPhone 3GS, when i get an email, i open it to read it and 1 to 2 seconds after i open the mail message, the screen takes me back to the home page? It just shuts down the mail page and everytime i try to go back to the mail page, it does the same thing...
Does anyone have quick fixes for this or has this happened to you?

Well I had some success in correcting this situation. I have five accts with one of my earthlink accts causing all the problems. I had gone through all the suggested corrections and much more many times over with no success. This last time here is what I did...
1 I deleted the offending acct from my iPhone
2 I reset my iPhone
3 I went into the webmail portion of my earthlink acct and deleted all emails that were not from my contacts list. This included all the junk, spam and returned emails for the first 50 emails. I made sure that at least the first 25 emails (as that is my setting on the iPhone) were clean.
4 I reset my email acct password on the webmail
5 Then restarted my iPhone
6 I added back my offending acct
7 It reloaded the first 25 emails, which were now clean of spam and whatever else might be lurking
This solved it, at least for now. I had previously done all of this many times over, except for the clean out and re-passwording of my email acct. So it would seem that offending emails can cause the iPhone to crash. Maybe it has something to do with the lack of a Junk filter on the iPhone. I don't understand enough of these things to know, but it all works for now. Hope this helps someone.

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.
Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
If that doesn't work:
• Log out of your iTunes store account. Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
• Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
• After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

Applecare Senior Advisor Txx Bxxx (I have his contact info in an email he just sent) just confirmed with me that the problem people are having with the App Store not loading is an apple issue with there servers, ITS NOT YOUR IPAD so don't go restoring it! It's not happening to everyone however but they are looking into it, its really hit or miss.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

My guess is that your operating system got updated to Mavericks and that you are running an old version of Lightroom:
