New memory old mac

I just recently updated to Leopard which completely jammed my eMac full. It had two 512 sticks of memory, I replaced one of them with a 1G. It is functioning properly but and recognizes the new 1G but only shows the other stick as 256 instead of 512. Do I need to add another 1G so they are the same? And it is still saying my startup disk is almost full. Is there anything I can do?

rc_wtts,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The startup disk out of memory message has nothing to do with the amount of RAM; it refers to free space on the boot hard drive. If a Unix-based computer, which includes OS X, runs out of spce on the hard drive for the OS to store it's cache and log files, the OS can fail, and be unable to even boot normally.
You do not want to have to boot a Unix computer into single-user mode and use the command line to find and remove enough files to enable the computer to run normally. The absolute minimum of free hard drive space required depends on a number of factors, including how much RAM the computer has (that determines the maximum size of swap files), how many programs you have open at any one time, whether the programs you use have their own cache or scratch files (disc burning requires at least as much free space on the hard drive for scratch files as the size of the disc being burned; Photoshop and other imaging programs make heavy use of scratch files), and so on.
As a rule of thumb, you want to keep at least 5 GB free space on the hard drive (that allows for an Archive and Install if it should ever be necessary). If you find your hard drive is filling up past about 85% to 90% in use (10% to 15% free space), take that as a warning sign to either clear out unneeded files, acquire an external Firewire hard drive for additional storage, or replace the internal HD with a larger one.
To free up space on the hard drive, start with the larger sort of files first. You can delete unneeded movies, delete those installer .dmg disk images which can be readily downloaded anew, delete unused programs, and anything else you can positively identify as being expendable. Don't delete anything you're not sure of, especially not anything in the System or Library folders at the root level of the hard drive! Don't try to make backups onto DVD-R or even CD-R first if space is short, since the disc burning scratch image file could trigger the very problem you're working to prevent. Copying to a USB thumb drive should be safe.
As for the RAM question, after addressing the shortage of hard drive space, try swapping DIMMs and slots to determine if there's a problem with the physical DIMMs or the physical slots.

  • Need a RAID that will work on both new and old Mac Pro

Desperately need to expand my RAID storage, and also not quite ready to buy the new Mac Pro.   Are there any high quality 6TB+ RAID enclosures that will work on both the new and older non-firebolt Mac Pros?  I already have a sh*t load of 2TB 3.5 drives, so I only need an enclosure.
Even when i get the new macpro, I will use the old mac pro as a second station, so i need the RAID to work on both.

Why not go for a eSATA Raid and a cheap eSATA card for old Mac Pro  and get either a Thunderbolt to eSATA or USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter for your new Mac Pro? Thunderbolt to eSATA is faster, of course.
I have a MacPower/Inxtron Hydra 4 x 2 TB eSata for example. I have a eSATA card in my Mac Pro and when I need to use it on my Retina Macbook Pro I use a USB 3.0 to eSATA adapter. Gives me about 240 MBytes/s with Raid 5.
On the eSATAcard it's just a little bit more, like 250/260 MBytes/s.

  • Monitor not working after installing new memory in Mac Pro

I installed 4GB of new memory in my first generation Mac Pro following diagram. When I booted the monitor is black. The key board is working but not the monitor. I removed the new memory and tried again but same problem. Any suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Well no one really buys from Apple and higher density goes into A1:2 then B1:2 and four DIMMs in those is best symmetrical configuration.
You say you tried xyz but not really very specific to me.
Some users doesn't tell much. However sometimes putting all the 512MB (not 500) on one Riser and the 4GB set on other has worked.
If it doesn't work with just the new RAM alone in A1:2 then it is bad or wrong and needs to go back.
And there have been 3-4 article changes on how to reset SMC. Yours has an SMC button. Leaving unplugged alone is a waste and almost useless. Hitting power button while unplugged was added in 2009.
And it could still be your GPU which is common - 7300 or X1900 or 8800GT... or...

  • New computer, old .mac account, can't send e-mails!

A friend gave us his old Titanium PowerBook G4. We have an iBook G3 that we've been using and I'm trying to set up the new/old PB for my wife as her personal computer.
I upgraded osx on the pb and then tried to configure e-mail for my wife's account. I copied all of the info. exactly as it is in her old account on the ibook. For some reason, it will not send e-mails, though it will recieve them.
When I try to send e-mails, I get this error:
"Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings."
I switched the port number from 25 to the recommended one and also double-checked that everthing was copied correctly. But we still can't send mail from her computer. I couldn't find the answer with searches... any thoughts? Thanks!

    Thanks!
Here's what the error message is:
Cannot send message using the server
    smtp.mac.com:wifes.address
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
    Message from: Wife's Name <[email protected]>
    Send message using: smtp.mac.com:wifes.address
So, I'm not sure what to do from here. I've tried various port addresses and none work. All that happens when I try to send a message is that I get the above error and the draft goes into the outbox.
Thanks in advance for any help, this has been really vexing for us and I'd love to get my wife up and running.

  • Trying to upgrade from old mac to new.  old mac can't find new mac in the migration program any suggestions

I purchased a new mac and am trying to migrate my hard drive from the old to the new.  I follow the instructions, but my source computer can not find my target computer.  The target has no problem finding the source.  Any suggestions as to how I can get this done?

  • New or old Mac Pro specs for $4-5000

So the new MacPro's are almost ready to drop and I can get a new box at long last. Unfortunately the options are a bit dizzying, so I'm hoping for some guidance.
Me: pro photographer - shoot 100% RAW files, 21 MP camera. Current image library over 25,000 files. "Average" shoot nets 500-2,000 files which must be ingested (Lightroom), edited and selects converted. Photoshop work is generally more in the retouching than composition mode - in other words, I don't have massive files with multiple composited layers - my layer stack is generally in the range of 20+ layers, many of them adjustment layers.
Software PS CS3, will be upgrading to CS5 with new box. Lightroom - will upgrade that too. I expect to add either Capture 1 or Hassleblad Phocus in the next year.
Good chance I'll be adding either Final Cut Pro or maybe Premiere for video. But I'm not looking to create a "video ready" box for big productions. When I go that route, I'll be making short video's - 30 sec to 5 min max.
I would like to keep my initial investment between $4 - 5,000 max, less could be better!
I am happy to either go with the newly released MacPro or the box that will, in the next day or two, be "out-dated" - and therefore significantly cheaper. I plan to use this as my main machine for next 3 years at least .
I know to get Ram aftermarket to save $$. Any other components I should get aftermarket? Graphics card? Hard drives?
Have a Burley 5 bay enclosure, e-Sata - where I currently store my image files in a JBOD format.
I'm not all that comfortable with putting together and maintaining a Raid for my image files.
What are my best (with an eye on budget) choices for scratch, for PS and LR?
How would you set things up to keep everything moving quickly and to keep backing up clean, simple and idiot-proof?
Thoughts on how to plan for improvements in the machine in the next 12 months  if money becomes available?
    Many thanks for any input!

Final Cut Pro/Premiere is at the bottom of the chart of my needs.
    I'm much more concerned about:
Lightroom speed, especially ingesting, rendering previews and then displaying images once rendered.
One big question is what is the optimum Graphics card for LR? Would a faster Video card improve LR previews? I spend a lot of time at the end of a shoot ingesting files, editing, developing and editing further. For me, this end of the workflow is where I would love to see performance increases.
Photoshop speed. Fractions of seconds don't matter, even several seconds, but I would like to have real time rendering of Liquify etc when doing beauty retouching.
If I went with the new MacPro, it would probably be the 6-core Mac @ 3.33Ghz. If people are familiar with MacPerformanceGuide, I'm considering their set-up. Any feedback on them would be appreciated.
    thanks

  • Brightness problem - New Display, Old Mac Pro

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with the brightness control on a new 24" LED display for my 2007 MacPro with 10.4.11. The display is attached with a Gefen dvi to mini plug adapter (+ usb). It is VERY bright and this display has no external brightness buttons. I'm using an extended aluminum wired keyboard and the brightness function keys on my keyboard are not responding. As far as I remember the brightness keys worked on my old monitor which recently passed away. I have run the latest update for keyboards for this OS.
Any possibility that this is an OS 10.4.11 issue? I also don't have a brightness slider in the system prefs>display like others (probably using a newer OS) have mentioned. Other forums have suggested everything from the adapter, to USB issues, to the possibility that Apple designed a monitor with no brightness control. (?)
Your knowledge and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Jen

With the Gefen converter, you need to install software for brightness control.

  • Setting up home network with new and old Macs and 1GBps internet connection

I have a 1 GBps internet connection and want to take advantage of it. I have three 802.11ac capable Apple products - a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro and  Imac. The signal currently runs from an Aris modem into a  Netgear router that maxes out at 100mbps. My Apple Extreme (not the new one with 802.11ac) is connected to the Netgear , so choked at 100mbps. Everything runs off Wifi. I have run speedtests on all my computers and nothing runs over 50mbps in the current setup. I also run some home security stuff off "DDNS" that does not work with Apple products (thus the Netgear router) so I need to consider that too. I use two  802.11n extenders around the house. I am being told I cannot use the newer 802.11ac Extemes because it would not work with the DDNS Security stuff. What do I do to maximize speeds from Wifi and keep the DDNS stuff?

What do I do to maximize speeds from Wifi and keep the DDNS stuff?
For maximum Wi-Fi speeds only, use all 802.11ac devices ... both wireless routers & wireless clients. For full DDNS support, only use routers that support this feature.
For maximum overall bandwidth Internet-to-network client, use routers that support 1Gbps WAN-to-LAN & LAN-to-WAN interfaces. There are not many on the market currently that supports this. Also these routers should provide Gigabit Ethernet on both the WAN & LAN sides.
To get an idea of what's available, please check out the SmallNetBuilder's to compare routers.

Do i really need to go through the hasle of updateing my operatiing system to get my ipad to work.
    Many thanks,

Snow Leopard only costs $29.00 and if you call Apple I think it is still available. It's not listed on the online store site, but I'm pretty sure that you can still buy if from them.
You can try an Apple Store or get in touch with the online store.

  • I have a new mac and my old mac had my photos on it how can I get my photos onto iPhoto without using a external drive or flash drive?

My dad put a new mac in and the old Mac had my photos on it, and I checked iPhoto after it the new computer was plugged in and there was no photos in it, and my dad said that they should be in there but they aren't, so is there a way to get my photos onto the new Mac without the old one and without an external or flash drive? Because a lot of my photos I don't have on my camera because the memory card was full and the pictures that I had already had been on the old mac....
    Thanks!

Have your dad post de what happened - you need to be at least 13 o se these forums and we need to be able to understand what you are asking
the basic answer to moving photos is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.  but you say you do not have the old computer
Unless  you have a backup or there is more information the answer is there s no way now

HOW DO I INSTALL DISK OF NEW 10.6 SNOW LEOPARD ? NEW MAC DO NOT HAVE DVD  ACCESS .  BUT I WORK ON OLD  MAC 10.4. TIGER  THAT DO  HAVE DVD PLAYER .  I KNOW  THAT SHOULD  BE  EAZY .  THANKS

You'll need to provide some more information .... what current mac mini do you have? Click on the apple in the left corner of the menu bar, click about this mac, and what does it say for processor, memory, and os x version?
When you say you have no DVD, do you have the mac mini server or is the DVD broken?
You can't do anything with 10.6 Snow Leopard on a PowerPC mini, however, if it is an Intel-based mini, you could probably hook up the systems in target disk mode to install 10.6.

  • Transferring Old CS4 from my old Mac to my New Mac Error 6.

I am trying to transfer my old CS4 from my old Mac to a new Mac which doesn't have a disc drive. I copied all the files to a memory stick and the pulled them from the stick into the application folder on my new Mac but the software will not start and say Licensing Error 6.
It this the right way to transfer my old CS4 from my old Mac to the new one which doesn't have a disc drive? and if so what does Error 6 mean and how to I get that sorted so I can work with my CS4 on my new Mac?
Also I would like to have PS and AI in my doc - I am so bad to computer stuff so please explain it all in very plain language. ( :
    Kind Regards
    D

You can't do that. Download the most current version of PS CS4 for Mac from the Adobe download site and install it. Then you can copy over your preference file and any edits you have done in PS CS4 from the old Mac.
But if this new Mac you have is running Mavericks or Yosemite CS4 might not work on those newer versions of OS X. Not sure, I gave up on Mac OS X about a year ago.

  • My Mac Book Pro has just had a new memory and solid state drive installed. After the installation, the Lightroom tools all became grey. There is no longer any color on the screen other than my picture. Even the color sliders are grey.  Can you please help

My MacBook Pro just had a new memory and solid state drive installed. Since the installation, the Lightroom tools are now all grey. Even the color sliders are grey. Please help!

My guess is that your operating system got updated to Mavericks and that you are running an old version of Lightroom:
Sliders are white, look different | Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

  • Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. Apps won't launch. Help?

Just moved CS4 Web from old mac to new using time machine. I get an error when I try to launch a program on the new computer (150:30). After contacting live chat about the issue and providing all serial numbers etc. I was directed to a download. The download was a .dmg file that my computer did not recognize. It was suggested that I ask the experts on the forum how to resolve the issue. I have all the discs and serial numbers but the new macbook pro doesn't take discs (I guess they think all apps are downloadable now). Any ideas?

Hmm... I don't know why they sent you here... CS4 is not part of the Cloud
I have some download links for earlier versions of Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements, but not CS4 Web
My best idea is to take a LARGE USB memory stick to a friend with a DVD drive and copy your DVD over to the USB memory stick
Or, ask in the forum for your program(s) to find out if anyone has CS4 download links
If you start at the Forums Index https://forums.adobe.com/welcome
You will be able to select a forum for the specific Adobe product(s) you use

  • Install newer OS version on old mac

    Hi,
I was wandering if it's possible to install the latest OS version available on an old iMac.
    Here's the specs:
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
The reason why I'm asking this, is that in order to use the iPad 2, I need a Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later, which I obviously don't have. So, in order to have the new gadget within few weeks, the only solution is to install a new OS on my old mac. If this is not possible, I'll have to use my money towards a new machine first and then the iPad.
    Any suggestion?
Thanks for your time and consideration to this matter.

    Hi,
You can upgrade to Leopard v10.5.8 on your iMac.
    Leopard requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517
You will need to purchase Leopard. Might be better prices elsewhere but start with Amazon as Leopard is no longer available from the Apple online store. I strongly recommend not purchasing from eBay.
Before you upgrade make sure there's enough free space on the iMac disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*
Good idea to check out the iPad online manual here before purchasing.
