New Mini Experience

Today I unpacked my new Mini (Core Duo, 2G Ram, 100 MB). What a wonderful experience. I will use this thing to run a pretty hefty psychotherapy practice; I've been hauling in the old TiBook for years now, hooking it up daily to a 17" Cinema display. Not having to haul in the TiBook will be a joy.
The setup was a breeze. It asked me to bridge the two Macs with a firewire cable, and in about 90 minutes, the deed was done. Everything tansferred perfectly, and I was back in business. The computer feels quite snappy, for every application that I use, it is absolutely quiet, and the graphics looks super thus far. I've had lots of Macs in my time, but this one was the smoothest to bring on line and get functional in just over an hour. Thanks, Apple. This is just great!

Always cheers me up to see a positive post in here. Thank you.
Especially when the post is so far from the future!!!

  • Ipod and new mini mac

I just got a new Mini Mac (intel) and want to upload my iPod to my new computer, the old one died:-( what's a easy (if there is) way? of course with i tunes.
    thanks

Do you mean as in copying all of your music off of your iPod and onto the Mini? You'll need to buy special software to do that I think. Haven't had any experience myself (yet), but that's my understanding of it. Either that or you could try turning on disc mode and drag and drop your files that way, but again, haven't personally tried it (yet).

  • The Time Machine in my old Mini and new Mini is different

In my earlier Mac Mini, I could use the internal drive for the backup, which was great. However, when I setup the Time Machine for the new Mini, it insists on me setting up an external drive. So I can't use the internal drive for backups any more?
    Thanks
    Steve

To clarify, this all happened under Snow Leopard as I had said. My profile lists Tiger, since I haven't cared to update my personal profile since using that OS, and in fact I still use Tiger among other versions. I manage a lot of users. And I never got to upgrade to Mountain Lion on this system, as explained in the post above. So I don't see the confusion.
I don't think the model of Mac makes a difference for this type of problem, but in case it does, the incident was on a 2010 Intel iMac with a 4TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM. I would have mentioned that if this was a problem with hardware specific to the model of Mac. But this is more of a universal issue.
But to stay on topic, I'm guessing my old backups are toast. But if anybody has any experience with recovering from Time Machine deleting their old backups, I would be happy to hear from them. In the meantime, I am going to try to do some old fashioned file recovery, and see what I can salvage.

  • New Mini vs. iMac

When the latest iMacs were announced a few months ago, I was so ready to buy. However, their video in seems to be Thunderbolt only. This doesn't play nice with with my DVI/DisplayPort HP laptop that I use for work. In short, having a second monitor is a business requirement for work. I haven't heard more than rumors about a solution for this so I've held off replacing my aging PM G5.
These new minis are intriguing; small form factor, can still go into my 24" Dell monitor via DVI, modest price.
Pricing out the iMac vs. Mini that I have my eyes on is about $1,000 difference. What am I givning up by not investing that extra $1,000?
: Dual core vs. Quad Core
    : No internal CD-R/DVD-R
    : No Camera for Facetime
    : Less VRAM
    : No new keyboard
    : Would't have a new HD monitor
: Only one instead of two Thunderbolt ports
My Mac use is for personal use. Web surfing, iTunes, occasional iMovie, light iPhoto editing, some web dev via Rapid Weaver, light gaming (more board gamey than FPS), GarageBand for sure, Evernote
One the surface, the mini could be thesolution I wasn't expecting at a much lower price.
Anything leap to mind that I am missing that I should consider?
    Thanks!

I find myself considering almost the same choice.  I fear my 2007 iMac is needing repairs again.  It has been a bit problematic, unusual in my Apple experience.  Trying to install Lion has caused the problems to reappear, although it is configured well enough to run Lion.
I am considering a 27" iMac with the 2.7Ghx Intel Quad Core i5 chip.  But now I'm also considering a new Mac Mini, perhaps with the 2.7Ghz Intel Duo Core i7 chip, connected to the new 27" Apple Display Thunderbolt.
I'm not clever enough to know the advantages of the Quad Core vs Duo Core.  The iMac comes with the 1TB hard drive minimum, and the minimum hard drive on the Mac Mini would be 500GB, but my plan is move my photo and video library to an external hard drive, perhaps a Time Machine, so my need for a large installed hard drive is lessened.
From my recent experience, I'm nervous about having an "all in one" computer/display again, and think it might be best to have an excellent display that might serve well for years as I upgrade computers along the way.
My configuration for the iMac is actually about $270 cheaper than the Mac Mini/Apple Display configuration.  Perhaps I would be best served with the iMac after all??
    Any suggestions or advice?

  • Brand new Mini - Webcam???

Does anyone actually have a new mini and a webcam that functions in Photobooth and iChat? From what I am reading there is one possible "Logitech Vision Pro" but I understand this is the most expensive webcam I have ever seen, $130!!!! Does anyone out there have another option THAT WORKS WITH PHOTBOOTH AND ICHAT?
    Thnx

  • New Mini Startup Time

Just got a new Mini w/i7.  Overall performance is great, but I'm concerned about the start up time; takes about 90 seconds from power on to log in screen.  This is my first experience with Mountain Lion; my older Macbook will only run Snow Leopard but takes only about 30-40 seconds to startup.
    Suggestions, please.
    Thanks in advance,
    JD

My new Mini goes from chime to desktop in about 10 seconds. But I have Apple's 1tb Fusion Drive in mine, and the entire startup sequence basically runs off the SSD portion of the Fusion Drive, which is very, very fast.
If you don't have an SSD or a Fusion Drive, then the internal drive you got from Apple is a quite slow 5400rpm. That probably accounts for the difference in startup times you're experiencing. And that's why I got the Fusion Drive in mine; I wasn't going to tolerate a 5400rpm hard drive in a desktop computer. (Although the HDD portion of the Fusion Drive is only 5400rpm, the SSD portion makes that mostly a non-issue.)

  • Can new mini run pre-Mavericks?

I'm interested in getting a new Mac Mini that can run pre-Mavericks.  Does anyone here have success taking a new mini, pre-configured with Mavericks and reverting to Mountain Lion?  I need to retain USB sync of Contacts and Calendars (no perpetual internet connectivity) and Mavericks no longer supports USB sync this way.  I upgraded my Mid 2010 mini to Mavericks then downgraded after the discovery.  I would like to get the newest possible Mac Mini that can still run ML.
    Any experience would be appreciated.
    greg

i have the same question as the original poster.
i understand that apple says you can't install an earlier version of os x than what the computer ships with, but that seems unlikely if the hardware in the mini hasn't changed at all since 10.8.
does anyone know what exactly could prevent a new mini from running 10.8?
    thanks so much!

  • HT1766 How do I back up my iphone5 to my ICloud account, when my restrictions password. My restrictions pass code has my icloud a account greyed out? Can i backup to a wd external harddrive, or try to backup to a new mini-mac, i jUst purchased?

How do I back up my iphone5 to my ICloud account, whqen iI have forgot my restrictions password. My restrictions pass code has my icloud a account greyed out? Can i backup to a wd external harddrive, or try to backup to a new mini-mac, I just purchased yesterday? This is my first iMac and IPhone5, so i am kinda out on my own, and can use some pointers!! My phone is full of pictures, and will not download anything, until i store my pictures somewhere!!

If you don't remember your restrictions passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it using iTunes. Do NOT restore your backup. The restrictions passcode is part of the backup.
Everything on the phone will be lost.
You can extract the photos from the camera roll the same way you would from any other digital camera. Having a restriction passcode set should not prevent that. do that before you put the phone in recovery mode and restore it.

I have found multitude of articles about moving itunes to external drive or other similar things but I don't want to move itunes from the external drive, just change mini mac machines and have everything in itunes the same..

  • I added a new mini ipad and created a new email for it in icloud when i did that i could no longer get back in my apple ID and download anything and lost all my money on my account. it says my account never excisted which I had from 2007 and 1300 items

i opened an icloud account for a new mini ipad to give them their own email, so they wouldnt be on my account, but when I came back to my account I could no longer get in my account with my password, so my account was gone....and now all the accounts are over lapped and dont work right, I want to get back to my original apple ID and everything I have bought over the last 6 years!!
    what do I do

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • HT4157 All my texts on my iphone stopped working when I synced my new mini ipad with the same ID as my iphone. ATT said was that was the reasons my texts failed. How do I give my mini ipad a new apple ID and still be able to sync the iphone and iPad?

My texts all failed when I synced my iphone 4S to my new mini ipad with cellular. ATT said I needed to create a separate ID for the mini ipad in order for texting to work. Will separate apple IDs still enable me to sync my iphone to my mini ipad?

Go to Settings>Mail, etc.>iCloud and delete the account. Then add in a new account with the details you want.

  • Can I use my old MAC MINI as a hard drive, or do I need to transfer all the data to a new Mini?

I would like to get the new MAC MINI, but I was wondering whether I could somehow just keep my old mac mini as a storage drive and continue to use its DVD drive since the new mini doesn't have one.  Has anyone out there done this?  If not, what is the best way to transfer data from one mini to another?

  • Can I link an OS10.4.11 Mini to a new Mini with Lion?

After lightning fried the video card in my Mini, which runs Tiger, I'm looking at a new Mini. My question is: Can I link the old Mini to the new one and use it as a back-up hard drive and CD/DVD burner? What do I need to do to make it work? Aside from the video card issue, everything else seems to be in working order, just no color on the display. Also, I have an old iMac drive (OX 9) in a Mini Stack case hooked to my current Mini. Can I still use that for data storage too, or are 3 different operating systems just going to screw up everything?

You can either boot the old Mac mini in 'FireWire Target Disk Mode' which turns it in to a glorified hard disk, or you can boot it but have Screen Sharing turned on so you can remotely control it from the new Mac.
When it is booted in FireWire Target Disk Mode all disks on it will appear on your new Mac. You would plug it in to the new Mac via a FireWire cable. With Screen Sharing you would access it over Ethernet not FireWire.
