New Mini (HDMI) with CRT Big Screen TV (RP)

Is anyone using the new Mini with a CRT TV. I have a Mitsubishi WS-65813 rear projection TV that I'd like to connect to the New Mini using HDMI to DVI. I had one of the older Mini's and the problem was the screen on the TV was not full screen or it was over-scanned, depending on the option I picked.
My question is if I connect the New Mini (HDMI-DVI) to MY TV will it fit native, meaning will it fit the screen without the above mentioned? I'd love to have the ability to watch HULU.
PS. I'd love to get a new LCD TV but the WS-65813 has a superior picture, and it has a 65 inch screen. Only 1080i, 480p, 480i, and Firewire. NO 720p.

So there's and overscan and a underscan now? Is this different from previous generation Mini's?
They actually removed the overscan function. I'm not sure how many people were using it. Very few I suspect (thus why it was removed).
The underscan function is implemented as a slider. You move it to the right until you can just see the perimeter of the Mac desktop.
Ideally, it should be all the way to the left, in a perfect world. Because you are losing resolution by using the underscan function.
But obviously many TVs do require it. And Apple kindly lets you adjust it to just the level that you need for your particular display device.
I don't know if the the underscan function is limited to only certain screen resolutions. I can't test it right now. But I will when I can. Or perhaps someone else in this discussion will have an opportunity to do so and share their findings.

Hi the fnt size in the menu bar is too small (unreadable). How can I increase the font size. I have a new Samsung PC with high resolution screen.

You must mean Photoshop Elements 11, not Photoshop.
There is no ability to change the size of the menu font in PSE 11.

Please move to the Photoshop Elements forum.

  • New mini HDMI and TV display

Every thing is fine initially with hdmi connected from mini to a pioneer plasma TV display.
But i want to try other resolution to see if a better quality could be obtained.
When i try a resolution which my plasma TV don't support, the screen turns blank..... and nightmare comes.... cannot switch back to a working resolution because there is no longer any screen output!
Try turning mini off and on again.. no help.
Try pulling hdmi cable away from mini and plug in again... no help.
    Please help....
    TIA.
    Regards,

Couple of problems with that idea. First problem is OP never said they had a second monitor. Though I suppose that can be had or borrowed.
The bigger problem is that OS X has the ability to keep track of different resolutions for a given display depending on if it is the sole display or one of multiple displays. So in this case, for example, were a second monitor attached and the resolution altered for the blank TV such that it stopped being blank and got a useable image, as soon as the other display were detached, the screen on the TV would first go blue, and then likely return to being blank again since it would revert to the non-working resolution that was last in use when the TV was the only attached display.
Sometimes OS X can seem too smart.

  • New Macbook Pro (with Retina) black screen after waking up

    Hello,
I bought a new 2015 Macbook pro (13" with Retina) a couple of weeks ago and noticed one thing that concerns me.
When the Macbook either boots up or wakes up from sleep mode it stays on a completely black screen for about 30-45 seconds.
I find myself sweating it out to see if the screen will actually come on. So far the screen always (eventually) comes on and the Macbook works as expected.
Do you think this is a problem with the Macbook? If so, I'd like to return it for anew before the month is up.
If this is a software issue, how can I fix it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Test after each one. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Set the default startup disk.
    2. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. If there's no change, reconnect them
    3. Reset the System Management Controller.
    4. Reset the PRAM.
    5. Reset the printing system.

  • Best MP3/4 player with a big screen???

    Hi,
I want to buy an MP3/4 player for my disabled son.  I need the largest screen possible to capture his attention (I've seen one that is 3", are there any larger than that?) and would love one with the option of external speakers or ear plugs. Does anyone have any recommendations?
    Mari
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I looked at this unit but the price is fairly high, and it does a lot of stuff that I don't need (like television, internet, media club).  I prefer to stay around the $100.  price range and use it for watching videos or video clips (my son's attention span is very, very short) plus put his music on the unit.  It would be used for him to be entertained on airplanes, long car trips and when it is necessary for him to sit quietly.
Is there anything like the Archos 5 but in a smaller price range?

I downloaded and saved Firefox 3.6.16 from this page after version 4 kept freezing!!!

  • Big Screen / HDMI usage?

Wasn't sure, exactly, which particular forum this question would be most suited for, so thought I'd try here.
My question is basically about using my N8 with HDMI out (have Big Screen app installed) to use BBC iPlayer (basically a web-based real video app, similar to youtube, but allows you to "catch-up" with previously aired BBC TV programmes in the UK).
I've started using my N8 upstairs, on my bedroom TV - so currently have no LAN connections, and my N8 is the only way to watch programmes on iPlayer around the house (can use my Wii console for this purpose in the lounge).
Connectivity all seems to work OK, and manage to pair a spare Wii controller to the phone to control it (Big Screen app functionality?).
The one thing I'm curious / concerned about is what's on my phone screen whilst watching iPlayer on my TV over HDMI. Normally you use the break-out / fullscreen option when watching iPlayer on TV, so on my phone's screen, all the while I'm watching something, there's a web page in landscape, with a black box (about 1/3 of the screen size) of the video that's playing on the TV.
I have 2 questions about this:-
    1. Will this cause any damage, "burn-in" or overuse of my phone's screen to watch programmes on my TV for a couple of hours? Have to say I'm not that up-to-date with usage best practices or things to avoid with things like AMOLED screens, just vaguely remember some concerns with plasma or LCD TV displays.
    2. Is there any way to blank my phone's screen whilst watching this app (BBC iPlayer) on my TV? If I use the lock-key, the app stops / pauses.
Thanks for any advice or info.

    rayhipkiss wrote:
If I understand your questions correctly, you are concerned about damaging the AMOLED screen by keeping it on for lengthy periods. If so, then the more you use the display the shorter it's life span will be. If your concerned about " burn in ",   the   black box  you describe  will not cause any issues as that portion of the display is actually switched off.
AMOLED screens work by turning coloured organic LED's on or off to give an image, so any black areas means no LED's are active. You will only suffer burn in if a static image is being displayed for a certain length of time. Moving or changing images will not cause any burn in.
    All the best.
    Ray
Well I had read about certain OLED screens having a limited amount of usable hours, so that was partly my concern.
On the one hand, using it for iPlayer is something I could be doing directly on the phone - so in effect using up the screens available life - but on the other hand, if you're using the HDMI output, and big screen, you'd like to think it's possible to run with the phone's screen off / blanked.
When iPlayer is run, a portion of the screen is black - but the rest is a web page that will have static content - so some text, the odd icon here and there, that will be displayed on the phone's screen for all the time the programme is being watched.

  • TS2948 13" New Air with a Loose Screen

I have a brand new 13" air that moves on its own past 100 degrees of tilt.  This is very annoying and the machine is two weeks old. Does anyone else have a new 13" Air with a loose screen?  Is this a repairable problem?

Is it in your lap when it moves? If so then normal
moves on its own on a flat solid surface?   not normal
As per Apple.com, the video above doesnt fall within this parameter:
Learn what you can do if you experience one or more of these issues with the hinges on your MacBook Air.
    Unable to close lid completely.
Broken or cracked plastic near one or both of the hinges.
More than one inch (2.54cm) of free play while opening or closing the lid.
Lid falls freely into closed position from a 30-degree open position. (From a closed position, open the lid approximately 30 degrees and let go.)
    END from Apple.com
The hinge  in the macbook AIR hinge, a friction hinge.
Due to the thin nature of the LCD backlit LED monitor on the Air, you would NOT WANT a very tight hinge.
Why? Excessive hinge resistance would cause the screen to BOW (and possibly crack), especially on a longer fulcrum from the hinge in the case of the 13" screen...... Ergo it is designed logically to be “looser than” a traditional macbook Pro's hinges for a very good reason.
Friction Hinge: A device with torque between two parts on a common axis.
A friction hinge is also commonly known as a:
Constant Torque Hinge, Position Hinge, Clutch, Torque Hinge, or Detent Hinge.
    Common Applications include:
Laptop computers; lids, doors and enclosures; positioning device for controls, monitors, arms, seat rests
Contact Apple for in shop diagnostic
Ive owned 3 Airs, some of the friction hinges are a hair tighter than others, but nearly all (never seen one that wouldnt) WILL IF you lift them up when at a 90 degree angle, ....if you lift up quickly, or tilt it back a bit,...the screen will flop open.
Friction hinge in the AIR see pic below  (there are NO SPRINGS in these kind of hinges)

  • Nokia Big Screen has Small Resolution

Am using Nokia Phone Broswer 2 together with Nokia Big Screen for HDMI connectio to TV set. This produces low-resolution iamges on the TV screen, as if the phone browser choses a resolution for its own screen and is not aware of the Big Screen.
I suggest Nokia to improve the integration between these 2 apps

It's not possible to use BigScreen to browse the internet on a TV. It currently only supports videos, pictures and music.

  • Would like to buy an notebook with 16:10 screen

    Hi,
    I would like buy a new portable computer with 16/10 screen ( and not 16/9 ! ).
Where I can find these ?
    Thank you.

Same thing.... Using a 7yo 12" 4:3 laptop which is about to die and can't find anything compact and light enough to travel with (I travel for work a lot).
Was looking at 16:9 laptops, but to get the same height of the screen I would need a 15" machine which is not nearly as easy to carry around as a 12" one. And this extra length of the screen is not going to be used, so why carry it around?
I was trying to find 16:10, as then I would need a 13" screen to be able to see the same amount of info as on my current 12" one, but they are nowhere to find (apart form Mac, but I need Windows)...

  • DVI problem fixed in new mini or 10.4.3?

Can someone confirm if the DVI issue was fixed in the new mini revision with the new video card ROM revision. I also herd a rumor that 10.4.3 might fix the problem, though I am skeptical about that one.

I have still been having static with the HP L2335 even with 10.4.3 loaded. Was there some additional step necessary? I did see a profile for the L2335, but didn't try to edit it - or even really see that as an option.
I also tried to get SwitchResX to work. I tried for several hours. I never found a collection of settings which would be loaded and made available. I tried using the GTF (simplified) check box and changing the refresh to everything from 55Hz to 75Hz. When I clicked "apply" they all said - available after reboot, so I rebooted. After it came back up, they still were not in the list of available settings - only the same old 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz. What are the specific settings others have used with SwitchResX?
I finally connected the display by the HP DVI to VGA cable. This let me set the resolution to 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz, but you can really tell the difference from DVI. The picture has much less crispness and sharpness. It is very soft and fuzzy - good for teddy bears, not displays.

  • Watching downloaded movies on big screen with mac mini

Has anyone hooked up a mac to a big screen (dlp, lcd, plasma) tv? If so is video quality good? Would it be a good alternative to subscribing to cable or satelite to watch tv programs or movies?

Not sure why you asked the question here since it has nothing to do with the AirPort Express (AX) nor wireless networking.
You should post your question in the iPod touch discussion area.
