New Mini, need help with migration assistant

Hi,
Just got new (used) Mini and want to run Migration Assistant to transfer files from my old Mini. I have read through as many documents I can find describing Migration Assistant and Firewire Target Disc mode, but I am confused about a basic concept I guess. Do I need both Mini's hooked up to their own displays and keyboards for this to work? I ask because I have only one display and one keyboard/mouse. If I need just one display and keyboard, which Mini gets hooked up to the display and keyboard, the old Mini (source 10.5.8) or the new Mini (target 10.7.4). Sorry if this is a basic or obvious concept.,,, however here I sit dumbfounded.

This one will make the old one appear as a Firewire drive to the new one.
Sometimes you may need a Monitor or an adapter at least plugged into the old one.

Need help with Migration Assistant and Ethernet

Hello,
I recently purchased a MacBook, and I'm trying to Migrate my files from my old Mac Mini. The MB has no FireWire, and Wireless transfer speed is impossibly slow.
I'm hoping to be able to connect the computers via an Ethernet cable to do the transfer. Is this possible? I've never done it before, so how to I go about doing it? Just plug in the cable and it's all good?

Yes. It's essentially the same as wireless except you connect the two by Ethernet cable. If you already have a wired/wireless router it's easy to just set up file sharing, but you can do a direct connection as well. See the following:

I need some help with Migration Assistant for transferring data

I would like to transfer selected items from my iMac (G4) to a new MacBook Pro using Migration Assistant, Can I selectively choose things to transfer? And are there any problems going from a G4 to an Intel-based machine? I'm mostly interested in transferring iPhoto photos and music from iTunes.

Migrating data other than your home folder may replace Intel components with PowerPC ones on the MacBook Pro, which will cause slow performance. Dragging over applications manually by restarting the old Mac with the T key held down and then placing them in the new Mac's Applications folder will work with many applications, but not all; any applications for which this doesn't work will need to be reinstalled.

I need help! I just bought a new MacBook Pro. In house, I have a two year old iMac running Mavericks (all updated) and an iPhone and iPad (both running the most current OS). I also have the iMac connected to a Time Capsule. Here are my questions:
1. As I am not replacing the iMac, but rather adding a MacBook Pro to the mix, should I migrate the software, settings, files, etc. from the iMac to the MacBook? Is there an issue running computers which are clones in the same environment? Is it a bad idea to migrate?
2. Assuming # 1 is okay to migrate, what is the best way? Is it best directly from the iMac or from the Time Capsule? I do have a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter on hand.
3. Is there a link that would help me navigate the migration?
4. How long should the migration in #2 take?
5. Will I need to change any settings on the iMac, iPhone, or iPad afterwards?
6. Will my contacts and calendar sync with iCloud automatically, or do I have to change a setting on the MacBook to make that happen?
7. Also, as I'm leaving town tomorrow and want to take the MacBook Pro with me and I'm unsure I've the time to Migrate and tweak, can I jus turn on the MacBook (still not turned on), use it as it is, and then migrate when I get back home?

Help with Migration Assistant

I have used Migration Assistant to move files over from old Dell machine to iMac
1 - It didn't transfer some files like movies. IS there a way to run it again and select the files that I want to retrieve.
2-It pulled over a number of files that I do not need. How do I delete these permanently from iMac
3-It created new User Accounts that were on the PC. Do I need to keep these for any reason and if not how do I delete them.

1 - I tested Migration Assistant with Win7 but since I'm not a Windows user by choice I didn't have lots of files and certainly no Windows only files. Were the files that didn't transfer Window Media files? Since those won't run on a Mac without 3rd party support I can see why they might not copy. At any rate, no, Migration Assistant is pretty much a an all or nothing transfer application. The files that didn't transfer can by copied via a flash drive or you could do it via the Internet using a cloud syncing service like DropBox or SugarSync
2 - drag files you don't want to the trash and then empty it.
3 - You can remove any accounts you don't need. Open the System Preferences and select Users and Groups. There's a lock icon in the bottom left corner. Click it and type in your user password. Now you can select any account you wish to delete and click the minus sign which is at the bottom of the window pane with the account names. You must keep 1 account minimum and it must be an administrator account. Also, when you delete an account you'll be offered the option of deleting the files (if any) associated with that account or creating a disk image with all the files inside. If there's nothing in those accounts you want to keep, just choose delete.

Getting a new G5 - need help with software from old G5

I am about to purchase a new G5 for my home... However I would like to have all of the exact same software and programs that are currently installed on my work computer that is being retired. With out having all of my original software disks, Is it possible to simply transfer all software from old computer to new computer? Or do I have to reinstall everything from original install disks?

You could swap the drive.
Apple does include the Migration Assistant with all of their machines. You simply hook up the two machines via a firewire cable, boot the old machine into Target Disk Mode while holding down the T key, and the Assistant does the rest.
In fact, when you turn the computer on for the first time it should ask if there is anything to transfer and then walk you through the steps.

okay so i got a new laptop for xmas and i want to transfer my songs from my old desktop to my laptop. is there a way i can load my ipod onto my laptop and use that to transfer songs.
my friend said that when i plug in my ipod to my blank itunes it will erase my songs. is there a way to download my songs to my laptop from my ipod?

Your friend is right. the iPod cannot be used to update iTunes. I had the same problem about a year ago, and I just transferred each song using my jumpdrive. It's painstakingly boring, but it will work without wiping anything clean.

Drag them from one hard drive then drop them onto the other. Then you must import them into iTunes in order to sync them to your iPad.

New user needs help with HD choices

I just found this forum and it looks like something I am going to enjoy. I have Premiere Pro CS 5.0 and use it to process AVCHD video. My hardware is made up of Asus P9X79 Pro, i7 3930k, 16 GB memory, and GTX 470 vid card. I also have an SSD as my main boot drive - it is an OCZ Revodrive.
I would like help in setting up my hard drives for the Adobe software, so have listed my storage drives along with current usage and ATTO benchmark results:
Drive 0 - Revodrive - ATTO = 800 - Used for Win 7 -64 Pro and Adobe software
Drive 1 - WD Black 2TB - ATTO = 140 - Used for MTS file storage
Drive 2 - WD Black 2TB - ATTO = 140 - Used for Scratch Files
Drive 3 - Samsung 1TB - ATTO = 60 - Used for Finished files (Encore files and for saving MP4 files for web upload)
Drive 4 - WD Black 1TB - ATTO = 120 - Used for backup
Drive 5&6 - 2 each Hitachi 750GB in Raid - ATTO = 180 - Used for backup (Drives are attached to Marvel Raid port on Motherboard)
I realize that drive #3 is the slowest drive and should probably be used for other things. I am open to suggestions.

Sounds like a strong system, and it should be just fine for AVCHD video.
Suggest:
Boot / OS / programs - Revodrive is fine; you can also assign media cache and media cache DB (CS5 setting) to this drive
Data drive - create a RAID 0 array from your current drives 1 and 2 - use this for projects and media, and pretty much whatever other data needs you have for your PC
scratch / output drive - use for current matching 5 & 6 Hitachi's in RAID 0 for scratc and render outputs
all others - use 3 & 4 for backups
You should probably run PPBM5 and report the 4 "scores" to the PPBM5 site and also back here to get a reality check that everything is configured and working properly for your system.

New user: Need help with my phone. iSync on a G3 with OSX 10.3.9

Hi guys, this is my first post on this forum, so take it easy on me. LOL I just got a Sony Ericsson W810. I found out that I need to get iSync. Aparently iSync 2.2 is the program I need. Is this available for my version of OSX? I'm not sure if a new version of OSX is compatible with my G3. Any help? Much appreciated. Thanks.

iSync 1.5 is the version which shipped with and works with Mac OS X releases prior to 10.4 - iSync 2 and later packages are not compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or any release of the OS. With Mac OS X 10.4 and iSync 2, came a completely new synchronization technology: the Sync Services framework.

New user - need help with PC Suite use

Hello. I have a new Nokia 6233, and have installed the current version of PC Suite (6.84.10.4), but can't figure out how to make certain things work that seem like they should. I'm using Windows XP with Service Pack2, and am connecting my phone with my PC via Bluetooth.
1) I have installed an application using the Install Applications component of PC Suite, and it now shows that the new app is on the phone -- but how do I actually get it from showing up in that category on PC suite to the actual phone?
2) I have hundreds of phone numbers that migrated over poorly from my old Sony Ericsson via SIM, and would like to edit them on the PC instead of on the phone. However, I see nothing under Contacts in PC Suite. How do I get the PC to recognise the contacts on the phone? If I enter new ones on the PC, how do I get them to the actual phone?

Hi,
1) Do you mean that you can not find installed application from phone (or what)?
2) Try to update Contacts folder -> open Nokia Phone Browser > "phone name" > Contacts > and press F5 button.
Contacts folder includes also button for create a new contact and when you click "Save", it saves that in phone.
BTW: if you contacts are in SIM card -> you have to copy those first in phone memory.

New ipod need help with songs from old one NEED HELP!!!!

I got a new ipod nano 3rd gen. but it wont let me take all of my old songs from my old ipod(nano 1st gen) and put them on my new one! I dont want to lose my songs so PLEASE HELP!!

When I did that on my old ipod and it said doing so will delete all the songs on it and replace it with my library. When I did it on my new ipod it just put the songs that was already in that playlist back on the ipod, not the songs that i need from the old one.

Cleaning up my new Thinkpad need help with what to Uninstall

So I finally got my new thinkpad T520 set up with Windows 7 and I currently have all the prepackaged Lenovo Programs and thinkvantage tools installed. I am trying to optimize my system right now and I am wondering which programs I should keep and which I should delete.
I already have Revo uninstaller, CCleaner, and ESET NOD32 smart security antivirus so I already have some good utilities to clean my system.
Basically if anyone could help me determine which lenovo programs to keep and which to uninstall I would be very greatful. I dont need this computer to be a screamer, but I would like a stable computer that is as fast as possible.

truthfully, Lenovo's factory load is lighter than most every other OEM load i've worked with.
if you want to further optimize your machine's running state, you should have a look at the blackviper site to dig through your running Windows services. even if you choose not to modify anything, it's quite educational. http://www.blackviper.com/
you can also go through your system's start-up programs and what-not. apps like acrobat reader install update checkers that load at every boot and run in the background. i like a Microsoft tool named Autoruns for this task. it's part of the Sysinternals suite. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/sysinternals

New and need help with replace harddrive M45-s265

I am not sure were to post this had a hard time trying to find were to post this message.
(I also upgraded to 2g memory with out a problem)
I replaced the board and get a message as if it has none

The new board is from newegg and is a western digital wd scorpio ATA 250 gb wd2500beve-00wzto, I was told this is what i needed.
The key in and pins are the same as old board.

That's the correct drive. What is your question? To do the replacement, you flip the unit over, remove the hard drive cover, slip the drive out, remove the 'caddy' and put it on the new drive, slide the new drive back in, replace the cover and boot from your recovery disks to restore the original disk image.
