New mini- three knocks when starting or waking

I have a about two month old mini with the duo core processor.
Last week it started making three knocks or click noises . It does this when waking from sleep, and when you initially start it up. at the very start of waking or at initial start up you get three clicks real close together then its fine.
My sound speaker is on low using the monitor screen control at the top of the monitor screen.
what can the cause of these clicks be?
Thanks

It's powering up, checking all the components. At that point it is therefore starting to supply current to the drives, which would cause the internal HD to spin up, and the heads to un-park and zero. That fact doesn't help in itself though, because while it's almost sure to be the noise of that activity you are hearing, it could also be that the noises are an indication of drive malfunction at that point. It isn't likely because, as said, you'd expect some variance in the symptom since faults are by their nature not predictable events, but it's possible.
I would do as Boece suggests, and verify the drive to make sure the data is intact. After that, I'd use the system as normal, ensuring you have good backups in case of failure, and simply monitor it to see if the noises change. If they don't, then I don't believe you are experiencing the onset of failure.

three beeps when starting from a disc

If your MBP came with lion or mountain lion.  You will need to reboot the computer with a bootable Lion DVD. Unlike previous versions of Mac OS X, Lion (OS X 10.7) doesn’t ship with a bootable disc—it’s available only as an installer app downloadable from the Mac App Store.  Once you have attained one of these disks. Boot and enter utilities and reformat the hard disk. Ensure that "Guid" is selected under options and that you also select "Mac OS Extended - Journaled. Hopefully before you do any of this you have a very recent time machine backup.
Once reformatted the computer should startup from the Lion Boot DVD without the beeps and you can reinstall the OS and restore your backup.
    Good luck

  • HT1535 I just started my new mini IPad, and when I clicked the network, my connect to iTunes went off, now I can't move on or get that connect to iTunes back on the screen so that I keep going

IT is so frustrating, because I cannot go further without being connected to iTunes..it's a brand new mini IPad, and I gave the network and then the iTunes thing to press to connect disappeared...HELP!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • Mac mini shut down when start

    Hi all,
My Mac mini doesn't want to start anymore ... I have run the Apple Hardware Test from the CD and all seems ok (all test are ok) but when I try to start on the hard drive, the mac mini suddenly shut down
Where it can comes from ? hard drive failure ? how can I diagnostic the issue ?
I am afraid to reinstall Mac OS X from the CD because I don't want to lose my date :[
Thanks in advance for your help and advices
    Victor

    Hi,
my Mini has been also suddenly shutting down. Power light goes off. Not at start-up. First it lasts longer, but gradually, as I restart it, it gradually takes less and less time to suddenly shut down. Or yesterday, for example, I tryied starting it up and not touching it. It lasted for hours. Thought it was cured. Then I popped a CD in and opened iTunes. Didn't take to long before it was shutting down all of a sudden. It would seem not to be able to take any activity. Here is a Console Message I run a few days ago:

  • Have downloaded Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini. Now when starting up, after a while I get a message that says, "You must restart your computer." I do that but get the same message again and again. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am having issues trying to start up with Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini. Here's the scenario:
    1) After starting up, I get the usual gray screen with Apple logo.
    2) After a few minutes, a darker gray screen scrolls down and in the middle of this is a black dialogue box with reversed (white) text. This text, in multiple languages, reads: "You need to restart your computer." Then it goes on to instruct on how to shut it down and restart it.
    3) I follow this instruction, but get the same dialogue box over and over agin.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and best wishes.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

Thank you BGreg.  That is what I have been doing, and then it works just fine.  I think it was doing the same thing in the previous version of Lion.  I may be incorrect about that.  I upgraded to 10.7.3 a few weeks ago, and then last week I reloaded the combo update, hoping it would help.  Not so.  Thank you for letting me know it is a common problem.  I have tried permissions in Disk Utilities, and in Macaroni, both at least 4 times, plus numerous restarts.  Nothing Improves.  It still can not find the internet when it wakes up or gets up.

  • I get three beeps when I start my 2008 15" MBP. I'm thinking RAM problem. Is it possible to buy RAM for my (ahem) vintage model?

I Get three beeps when I start my MBP. It's an old model 2008 15". I think I need to buy new RAM. Is RAM available for these older models?

RAM is available from OWC and Crucial, the best sources of Mac compatible RAM.
    Ciao.
Take out the RAM modules and clean the contacts.  Reinstall them making certain that they are well seated.
If the tones come on again, test by installing each module in each bay to determine if the module or the bay is faulty.

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.
