New Monitor, Old Computer Compatibility

I have a new(ish) Acer monitor. It's only 17.5" apparently, but its native resolution is something like 1600 x 900 and 32-bit colour, though I think it can handle lower resolution if need be.
I have a Sawtooth with a Rage 128 Pro graphics card.
Will the latter be able to handle the former? I have the DVI cablery necessary to connect them, I'm just concerned that Sawtooth's antiquated graphics card won't want anything to do with the new monitor (even if my Intel Mac Mini can set it to a lower resolution as desired).
Additionally, the Sawtooth will be running OS 9 and will need to boot off an external hard drive or install CD.

OK, thanks. The monitor worked after all. (Once I finally requisitioned it for the afternoon.)
Sawtooth is now running Mac OS 9.0.4 (found a copy on Macintosh Garden; my own CD is long since lost to the mists of time.)
Sawtooth briefly ran OSX 10.4.11 since I had to boot it off my external drive to reformat its internal drive (which was pulled from a PC; Windows NT format, and had some X86-friendly version of Linux on it). It was a somewhat aggravating experience trying to run Tiger on a 400 Mhz processor.
For some reason, it wouldn't boot off the install CD, though. (I booted it into OS 9.2.2 off the external drive and it mounted the install CD; it just wouldn't boot off it. Luckily, OS 9 doesn't need to boot off the CD to install.) I wonder why that is.
PS— Seems they redesigned the support forums. The old one was better.

  • My new and old computer won't reconize my ipod

I got instructions off apple.com on how to move my itunes library from my old computer to my new one. I followed every step. I have mini4G and didn't have enough space needed to transfer my music and music files so I did what the instructions told me to. I hadjust got done downloading the files to my Ipod and was going to start the procese on my new computer which I had already installed itunes 7.0 and hooked my ipod up to my computer followed the next couple off steps( at this time it reconized my Ipod) then did the reset step and wam! No more Ipod! My old or new computer can't reconize my Ipod anymore! How could this be? How do I get my Ipod back . now all it will do now is charge... Could someone please help me? I've only had it for a year. If I'd know this would happen I would just put all my cd's and puchased songs on manually. It would have took a long time but at least this wouldn't have happend.

  • Installing software from new to old computer

If I buy a new mac with Tiger, can I use the CDs provided to instal it on my old computer (that has panther on it) or do I need to buy it separately?
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and build specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac. Even if attempted on the same Mac model, the model build must be identical to the model/build the install package was shipped with and intended for. Even if possible and as previously provided, it would be a violation of the single user license agreement and against the law to install and use a copy of the OS and included software on more than one Mac at a time.
If you want to install Tiger on your old Mac, you need to purchase a Tiger retail install package which can be used to install Tiger on a single Mac model that meets the minimum system requirements.

  • New iPod/Old Computer

I'm a newbie to all of this...I have a new iPod 80G Video that I can not sync on my old computer. I had a 4g mini that I used and recently upgraded. When I first plugged in the new 80G to my computer iTunes goes through the process of initializing and showing the new iPod under "devices," and it looks like it has all of the music synced but it does not. There is nothing on the new iPod. Is there some process I need to go through to get this to work?

This Apple knowledge-base article may help address that issue.
Windows confuses iPod with network drive.

  • New software, old computer q

I recently purchased a brand new MacBook. Naturally, it came with installation discs for Mac OS X. I'm now wondering if I can use the same discs to install Mac OS X onto our old iMac with OS 9. How would one go about doing that?-- if it is in fact possible.

benflorsheim, Welcome to the discussion area!
    That is not possible:
The version of Mac OS X that comes with the MacBook is compiled to run on an Intel processor and therefore will not work on your old Mac with a PowerPC processor.
Discs that ship with a Mac are designed for use with the Mac that they shipped with and no others.
The licensing agreement with that disc allows you to only install it on one Mac... your MacBook.

  • New Nano, Old Computer

So wife just bought a ipod nano but itunes won't recognize it, even though the computer itself does see it. Any workarounds to make itunes 9 see it and work with it? Can I reformat the nano into something that my OS (10.4.11) recognizes?

No, you will need to use your computer that has Snow Leopard on it that is listed in your settings.

  • Need to sync iPad to new PC, old computer was a Mac, any issues ??

There have been issues in the past about syncing an iPad/iPhone/iPod to one type of computer,Mac or Windows machine.  Just wondering if these are still a problem, before I start.  Thanks.

It would be a very good idea to backup and sync with the Mac one more time before she proceeds. Windows 8 is not yet officially supported for syncing with the iPad so just be aware of that before you start. Some users have reported some problems using Windows 8. Your wife may be fine, I'm just saying don't be surprised if an issue arises.
    Apple's official system requirements.
Apple ID (required for some features)

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
    Download iTunes at www.itunes.com/download

  • I got a new windows computer and I can't transfer all of my music to it from my old computer. I have some music on my phone but not all of it so when I plug it in only some of my music shows up and none of my playlists.

I got a new Lenovo Windows computer and I'm trying to transfer my iTunes library to my new computer. I can't figure out how. I tried plugging in my iPhone and it synched what music was on my phone but I don't have my entire library on my phone and none of my playlists transferred. I tried authorizing my computer and it is but it still isn't showing up. I turned on my homesharing on my new and old computer but apparently I have two other computers I have authorized and I don't know which ones they are, probably ones that have been thrown out. What do I do now?

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
Authorizing a computer does not cause media to magically appear.
Media is only where the user puts it.
Copy the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.

The easiest way is to simply restore your music from your backup drive.

  • I am 72. Old computer died. New one has Windows 7 Prof. Can I install Photoshop CS2?

I've been using Photoshop since version 4. Worked up to CS2, but not the suite. My old computer with XP died and the new one has Windows 7. Can I install it on the new one? I'm terrified to try because I am NOT a computer expert. Can I get help on this? Is CS3 (alone, not the suite) compatible with Windows 7? I only use Photoshop and InDesign and don't need all the extras. I went to a friend's house and tried Photoshop in her CS3 Suite. I can't figure out how to even cut things out using paths. Is CS 3 Photoshop (not suite) comparible to CS2?  Please help me.

do you own photoshop cs2 and indesign cs2 or a suite containing both?
if yes, you can go here: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-suite-2-activation-end-life.htm l
and download the two needed programs (note the serial numbers on the download page) and download and then install the two programs using the serial numbers from the download page.
you can probably just install on your win 7 computer without using compatibility mode.

  • I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?

I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?  Both computers have OS X10.9.3.  Currently they are connected by a Firewire 800 cable.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

  • Transfer Itunes From Old Computer to New Computer

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista. The computer screen went totally blank, but the computer turns on and works. We just cannot see anything on the screen. On the old computer, I had Itunes, 2 Iphones 3G and Ipod classic and ipod nano-5th generation. We bought a new Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7. Is there any way for me to transfer my itunes files (music/apps/etc) from the old computer to the new computer even though I cannot see the screen on the old computer? Please help!! Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!
    Amber

You should probably hook up a monitor to your old computer, borrow one if necessary. By default, whatever you do on your laptop should be duplicated on the monitor you plug in so you can see what you're doing.
    Hope that helps.

  • HT1329 My old computer crashed.  How do I sync my Shuffle with my new laptop?

My old laptop crashed -- it does not boot up and the monitor is blank.  I bought a new laptop with Windows 8, downloaded iTunes and connected my ipod nano.  How do I get them to sync?  All of the music on the nano is downloaded from cds (not purchased from itunes store) and I did not have cloud service.  The instructions online all say I have to make changes to the nano using my old computer, but that's no longer an option.  Any advice?

It does not matter what the settings are for your iPod.  iTunes syncing generally works in one direction only, from iTunes library to iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.
