New MSI fan in need of advice from experienced comrades

Hello all on the forums,
I currently own a 15.6 notebook (a10-4600 2.3ghz, 1TB HDD, 8GB Ram, Radeon 7660g + 7670m DUAL graphics) and I would like to switch to MSI for a number of reasons. I am not really satisfied with my mid-range CPU and dual GPU which seems promising but underperforms expectations. After this pretty bad experience I am kind of hostile towards AMD, even if the new 8970 has amazing benchmarks.
Now I am on a low budget and I am looking to buy a used MSI laptop in decent condition. I have stumbled across many and I will write down the setups of each, and it would be a great help if you guys could tell me which "combo" is the best.

I am looking for a good performance in recent games. I mostly play CS:GO, League of Legends, but if it can run BF3, BF4 I would be thrilled, because I need a laptop that can last atleast a couple of years with good performance of course, because in the past I only had mid-range laptops that have no real performance after 1-2 years. The weight doesn't matter as I am using laptops as a desktop, moving rarely when going to trips. If you managed to read through all of this I want to thank you for your time, and it would be great if someone could advise me which one is better, and to clarify if it's better to have a powerful CPU or video card.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day!
Recruit Dragon

I would go for a combination of Intel+NVIDIA graphics with the SSDs since you'll need a good CPU with a good graphics in order to have good performance in some games and even though GX70 does have a good graphics, having a Intel CPU with NVIDIA graphics can give you good performance in almost every kind of games. With SSD, the system will run faster comparing with the HDD, so I would also prefer to have SSD combination instead of only HDD.

    Bye,

You dont have to do anything. I gave you a potential suggestion to one solution.
Contact MSI technical and ask them. If the card is under guarantee, they may ask you to send it in and you will probably get a refurbished card.
Your choice to weigh up the costs of sending the card in for repair, buying a new card or considering an aftermarket cooler.

  • I am new to LR and needs some advice please

I have been using Raw shooter and have been shy of going over to LR.I am not a hugely knowledgeable user nor that technically minded. I purchased Scott Kelbys, and Martin Evenings book on LR and am learning as I go, I have been reading several threads on this site and I am concerned about all the negativity I am reading about LR being buggy, with problems?
and how it seems that Adobe are not doing enough with LR to address any such issues? I am a canon user and issues relating to Canon raw are a particular worry. I am about to put my entire collection from Raw shooter ( On External LAcie drives) into the hands of LR in the future. Is this a wise decision? Please help.
Also I want to get started if it is the right thing to do, my PC is getting on abit, with 4 yr old tech inside and only 1gb ram. I will soon get somthing more powerful with 2-4 gb ram. my second question is this. I will be running my libraries on external drives only ( LAcie F.A. Porsche).
If I have imported my images without moving folders, with LR 1.2 loaded on my pc. If later I remove LR from it and reload onto a new PC will it see all my libraries again and know all my settings again without issue and without having to re-do everything. If that is the case then I had better wait until i upgrade the Pc, before I start any work with LR, which will be frustrating.??
Apologies for a long question, but I am technically challenged. If anyone can assist me in these areas I would be grateful
    Paul Apps

LR is not buggy and it converts Canon RAW files just fine. I run LR on a PC without any significant issues except speed. LR is too slow in some areas (importing images, browsing thumbs and previews, in particular) compared to other programs such as Photo Mechanic and ACDSee, but it is very stable on a clean computer. Many features need improvement but hopefully that will come in time. Meantime LR is quite good and I bet you will like it. There is nothing better overall.
You should never risk your images to any software or anything else. Keep a backup copy of your originals separate from the copy you use for LR or other software. Plus LR is a non-destructive editor (pixels are not changed) so your images will be quite safe.
As Tomrock said you can transfer your database to a new computer without difficulty. I do recommend a new computer, a 4 year old machine with 1gb RAM will probably be frustrating. Other folks say that a quad core processor and at least 2GB RAM is the way to go. My 2 year old dual core Pentium with 4GB RAM is definitely too slow for LR. You might also consider switching to internal hard drives in your new computer and use your external drives for backups. Internal drives for your images and catalog file will be much faster.
Also Tom's advice about importing a few images at a time and then testing how things work is very good. It is definitely a mistake to import a huge volume of images until your are familiar with LR. It is very easy to delete a small catalog file and start over since a few hundred images imports quickly.
    Good luck.

  • Need some advice from MacBook Pro users

Hi all. I've been using Windows for as long as I've ever owned a computer. I have a background in graphic design and finally came down to needing a notebook. After some careful consideration I've decided to go with a Mac. I have used them before in the past on job and off and I've had some bad and good experiences with the Mac.
What I am trying to figure out is I have heard the Macbook pro has some heating issues. I am also not sure if I really need the macbook pro. I could easily just use the 13' inch without the graphic card. What I typically do is design in photoshop, dreamweaver, surf the net, etc. Basically it is a business computer. I don't use it to play games and as such I want to make sure I am making the right choice.
Is the Macbook 15' right for me? I am worried about over heating issues.
Also I could easily buy the 13' and just bump the ram to 2 gigs. I just wanted to see what everyone thought. Any advice?
      Windows XP

I just updated to the MacBook Pro 15 from a PowerBook 12, the MBP does seem a bit hotter than the PB but its not that bad of a problem, at least not when using Photoshop and Illustrator.
However, in terms of design, if you will be using the notebook as yoru primary design machine without an external monitor, the MBP 15 would be a much better choice. I'm an art director and I only use the notebook when I'm on location, most of the actual design work is still done on a G5 desktop. The MBP's screen is actually big enough to be productive in Photoshop and other design software, but the smaller screens like 13" can be a bit tough on the eye in the long term, managing screen real estate can also be annoying. Not to mention, the new glossy screen is very beautiful.
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

  • Still Have v. 10.4.11 but am configuring a new MBP and I need some advice..

    hey-
I am replacing my 3 year-old MBP which never made it to the Leopard stage, because I was chicken. This one is going to be cleaned up and given to a family next door from a real poor area of Mexico and until they saw this had never seen a notebook. So I am excited about this.
anyway, I am configuring a new MBP together and I have a few questions that are probably pretty basic, but still questions. I should have thought of this before, but is getting a new MBP with Snow Leopard installed on the machine (and I was old by the support guy who helped me with the configuration since it will be used for a graduate school of architecture, planing, and preservation program too.
any feeling on jumping from 10.4.11 (which I guess is Tiger OS X) to Snow Leopard and totally bypassing Leopard? It sounds like Snow Leopard is pretty much a major "update" to Leopard, but that is probably wrong. (Just a side questions, what does the Operating System OS X mean and do all of the operating system have OS X or did it start at OS 1 and will keep going up?)
Is there a time when a person who wants to try and focus on school or other important things can pretty much be sure that a new OS has had sufficient time for the major bugs to be worked out and most likely can feel safer about making the purchase than if they had not waited and did not really care-thinking that Apple would get them fixed and the updates would fix the problems? I do not tend to think this way, but in this situation I am going out a bit from my usual "way" and living or should I saying hoping that this has happened and is true? Does that make sense? So, any feeling if SL has been out long enough now that Apple has had a chance to make sure it is doing well and has pretty much been integrated into the hardware and properly functioning of the notebook as a "single unit?"
thanks in advance for any feedback and I apologize if the wording was incorrect or I did not explain myself clear enough.

You should not find it hard to jump from using Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) directly to using Snow Leopard (Mac OS 10.6). Some things are a little different, including a few changes to system preferences & how the Finder handles changing views from one folder to the next, but it is fundamentally the same from a user interface standpoint. In fact, there are very few interface differences you would notice between using Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) & Snow Leopard.
What you will most likely notice the most when going from a 3 year old MBP to a new one is that its response is substantially quicker: startup is quicker, apps open faster, Finder tasks complete in less time, etc. This is due both to the more powerful CPU & other components in the new machine & to the new OS, which is more efficient than previous ones.
"Mac OS" is the generic name for Apple's proprietary operating system that runs Macintosh computers. There were versions 1 through 9 of this operating system, starting with the one developed by Apple for the first Mac that appeared in 1984, but the first version to get the "Mac OS" designator was Mac OS 8, released in 1997. It was followed by Mac OS 9, released in 1999. All of these versions can be considered decedents of the first one, with strong family resemblances both in their internal structures & graphic user interfaces. Mac OS X is much different internally, incorporating many components of the venerable UNIX operating system first developed in 1969 at AT&T's Bell lab, plus a graphic user interface update (named "Aqua") more suited to its greatly improved capabilities. It is not a "pure" UNIX variant but instead a synthesis of UNIX & Apple's old & current technologies.
Each major revision of Mac OS X has had a cat name & a "point number" like Cheetah for 10.0 or Tiger for 10.4. Each revision has brought new features to the OS as well as under-the-hood improvements. Unfortunately, these improvements come at a cost in terms of legacy support. Some applications require revisions to work with each new major version, as do some of the drivers for external hardware. Generally speaking, fairly current apps & hardware drivers have gotten or will get revised for Snow Leopard if needed, but there are no guarantees that all ever will.
There are also bugs in every major OS release from every OS maker. Generally, these are obscure, affect few users significantly, & are eliminated in updates released after the first major version, but even the updates can introduce new bugs. Snow Leopard appears to be more bug free than any prior Mac OS major release, but the possibility exists that some bug will affect you in some critical way.
That said, the chances of this are low, & you should not read too much into reports here of problems unless they are widespread & describe very closely the same problem. Keep in mind that there are already several million copies of Snow Leopard in use; any really widespread problems would result in tens of thousands of complaints & probably make the evening news as well.

  • New hard drive and need to restore from time capsule

I replaced my hard drive with a new 1TB drive. Now I need to retore everything from my Apple time capsule. I'm having some trouble doing so. I first booted up with the new drive and selected restore from back up under disk utility and everything seemed to be going fine until I had to restart the computer when it was finished. When I did, I got the "panic" error and the computer wouldn't boot up in any mode (ie safe mode). I then started holding C button to start with the operating disk in and at set it up that way. My back up stuff is on there somewhere because 150GB is being used but my computer looks like it just came out tf the box. I also did a upgrade to Lion last year, How do I get that back?
    Thanks for any help

  • Please. Need some advice from those in the know. QT movies. Workflow

I have been fighting this workflow for some time. Must be a better one. I produce a football highlite show using iWeb to stream it. It is very popular in my small town but a real hassle to webcast. I shoot and edit in the XDCAM HD format. Editing goes well until exporting begins. There are so many options. I am lost. Do I export right from FCP? do I use QT Pro to export? Compressor. Here is the workflow I have been using: Export ref movie out of FCP ( this is not working well with Snow Leopard) crashes and locks up.
Then I used to use QT Pro to export 480 x 320 movie. Then...I exported again as a hinted movie. Then upload in iWeb. File sizes per quarter were just a bit under 100 megs. It seemed to work well last year but there has to be a better way. Here is the website. northcoastgameoftheweek.com Any help would be greatly appreciated. This group seems to really understand iWeb.
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Frederick,
You're spending a lot of money.  I will add my 2¢ -- -- but you must, as I assume you know, fully research your options.
    Environment:
Start with your workspace (inc. lighting) and your clothes.
    Screen:
The iMac screens are lovely, but not, from what I hear, monitor-grade accurate.  For critical color work, use NEC or Eizo monitors.  I use NEC, with their SpectraView II software and an X-Rite ColorMunki photospectrometer.  At the time, this was the least expensive color-calibrated workflow.
    Printer:
Epson's are great, imho.  I use a 3880 in my studio and rent a 9900 by the hour when needed.  I have read of problems (iirc) with one of the printers in the 7000 line, however.  The take-home lesson that I filed in my brain was, "If you're going to spend the money on the 7000 line, just get the 9000 line."
    Aperture workflow:
Aperture is a fantastic workflow tool.  Since you are adept with PS, you should set PS as your external editor.  Use Apertures formidable tools for storing and organizing your Images, and its robust editing tools for either all your proofing, or all but your most demanding editing needs.  That said, allow a good bit of time to get the feel of Aperture.  It is not at all like Bridge.  But your important choice is which RAW converter you want to use.  There is, imho, no reason to use Aperture if you are going to use Adobe's (or anyone else's) RAW converter.
    Good luck!
    --Kirby.

  • New to Macbook 13" need of advices

I recently bought a macbook, I've been needing to charge my macbook once a day even tho the discussion board and the battery information tells me once or twice a week even once a month. Is it normal to charge it to full once a day. How should I go about charging it? Can I keep using my macbook as it's charging? While it's charging what can I do while charging? May I webcam while surf the web or will that be too harsh for the macbook? Someone tell me what can I do? How should I charge my macbook? What can I and cannot do while I'm charging my macbook?

You're kind of doing it backwards. You should be running your MacBook plugged in whenever there is power nearby, rather than running on battery and only plugging in when it is empty. While it is plugged in, there are no restrictions on what you may do.
The once a month thing you should be doing is calibrating your battery. Some reading:

what language is most suitable for its front endThat would be a personal choice (of the architect/functional designer) and/or depending on whatever language/development tool is 'hot or not'.
But it won't hurt to have (some) knowledge of JAVA and C/.NET, as they're often used in front-end applications.
Also having sound XML, ADF, SOA and APEX knowledge is very valuable nowadays.
what language i should learn so that i can use the sql plsql knowledge bestSQL is a language, it stands for Structured Query Language. For (Oracle-specific) directions, see:

    The likely culprit:
The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.
Possible other causes are the software that installed these:
    com.splashtop.driver.SRXFrameBufferConnector          1.5
    com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer          1.7
    com.splashtop.driver.SRXDisplayCard          1.5
    com.avatron.AVExVideo          1.7
Now they may be causing panics because the try to use acceleration in the GPU which leads to the panics. You are unlucky to have a particular model that has a real problem with this.

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • Trying to install SL on a new hard-drive for my iMac, when asked which disk to install on it gave me no options, i followed advice from another forum and created a partition, now can't boot from the new drive at all. Help?

I've had **** with my iMac, the hard-drive failed so i replaced it with a new 1TB Samsung drive. Then when i tried to install SL from the install disk, all went to plan until it asked me which drive i wanted to install it on, where it came up with a box where my options should have been, but instead it didn't give me any options to install it on any drive i.e. it asked which drive i wanted to install it on but no drives came up to select.
So i followed the advice from another forum, look at the 'Extended Hard-drive preparation' response
    ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/10576009#10576009 )
After following these instructions i have now got a new partition, but when i restarted my computer to install SL on the drive, the option to boot from the drive is now not available, now i must boot from the install disk, whereas before i was able to boot from either the install disk or the hard drive. The hard drive is still visible in disk utility as it always has been, but i am now unable to boot from it, let alone install SL.
Please help my iMac has been broken for months and i've been trying to fix it for so long and am getting problem after problem. Thank you!

    Hi db2
That off the shelf MS-DOS / FAT-32 drive needs to re-partitioned GUID Partition Table / Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you can install OS X and Startup your Intel iMac from it.
    1. Boot from your original install or retail SL DVD and open Disk Utility.
