New Nano, Old Troubles

I just got my amazing 8GB black iPod Nano. It is so small, and at the same time, so big. I have a question, that I kwno has been answered before, but I am to lazy to look it up. So, how do you sync your new iPod to your _old and same iTunes_?

It should update your new Nano so I'm not sure what the problem is. Can you be more specific when you say "nothing happens"? Do you mean there is no message on the Nano screen saying it is syncing? No indication on the computer at all that you plugged in a Nano or that you clicked the sync button? No error message?
I assumed you've tried restarting your Mac as well as resetting your Nano. Is this a brand new Nano? If nothing works, it would be time to give Apple a call.

  • New nano, old itunes

I connected my new nano to the current version of itunes when I got it about a month ago. Since then, I have reinstalled operating system/softwear from original discs (OS X 10.4, iTunes 4.71). As I am attempting to figure out if my hard drive issues are softwear or hardwear related (all seemed to start after updating iTunes) I'm reluctant to update again. My nano's battery is wearing down, and I'm not sure what will happen when I connect it. I had it set to manual updating. All I really want to do is charge the battery. Any guesses?

I understand that, but among our friends and relatives, we do not have any problem with iTunes 7. Have you try the following
    Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • New nano/old library

My wife lost her 3 month old nano, I just ordered her a new one. Is there a way to just use her old library once the new one arrives?

Are you using one library and updating different playlists or do you have different Windows user accounts? If it's different accounts then log into Mom's and connect the iPod. How did you handle her last Nano? Whatever you did then you just need to do with the new one.

  • New Nano, old macbook - help

Is there any way to download itunes from iPad to iPod Nano?  My mac book is apparently too old and my son's new iPod Nano won't register and itunes won't update as os x version is needed and we don't have it.  Updating everything makes it a costly Nano.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have an Early 2009 MacBook, so the upgrade will be cheap. iTunes 11 needs Mac OS X 10.6.8, so buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then, make a backup of your files, insert the disc and upgrade. The disc has got Mac OS X 10.6.3, so after upgrading, open  > Software Update to install the most recent version. After installing 10.6.8, open Software Update for a second time to update iTunes, so you will be able to use the iPod nano

  • Brand new nano having trouble updating, maintaining song permissions

My mom got a brand new 4g nano for Christmas. We brought it down to her computer, which is running Windows XP 2003 with update package 3.
We cannot get the ipod and itunes to work together. Here are some of the problems:
    - My mom bought two songs from the itunes store after she hooked up her iPod. However, anytime she tries to update, itunes says that the computer is not authorized to play the songs. We go through the authorization process, but the same error pops up immediately after. However, we can still play the songs through iTunes and on the iPod.
    - We tried to update the ipod software to the latest version, but about halfway through the update the ipod disconnects. The ipod no longer shows up in the sidebar, but the update progress box still appears. Then an error box pops up saying the ipod cannot be updated and gives the error number 1436.
    - I tried resetting the ipod by toggling the hold switch and holding the center and menu key, but when it powers back up it still shows that there are songs on the ipod.
We've tried uninstallng and reinstalling itunes, and connecting the ipod through a different USB port. It is not on a high speed USB port, could this be part of the problem?
Any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated-- we want to help her get this going!
    Thanks!

Try the steps you haven't in this article.
As for the music problem try fully deauthorize the computer and reauthorize it again. If that doesn't work then try deauthorizing all the computers on the account. Steps for both are in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
The fact that you are not using a high-powered USB ports can be causing a problem, make sure they are at least 2.0 ports.
Also, when you uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes did you follow this article? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
If you didn't then I would suggest it. I've had all these problems separately in the past so I feel for ya.

  • New Nano – Old Comp

    Hi Gang,
I just got a new 8GB ipod nano, and was heartbroken to discover that I could not use it with my ancient Win2K comp Why would Apple require that I upgrade my Microsoft OS? Shouldn't I be able to use my ipod with any 32-bit OS that supports USB? Besides upgrading to XP or Vista, what does Apple recommend that I do in order to enjoy this expensive, yet currently useless, piece of hardware?
    Thanks in advance guys!

Why would Apple require that I upgrade my Microsoft OS?
Newer versions of iTunes are required to communicate with newer iPods, and these versions aren't written for older OSes.
Shouldn't I be able to use my ipod with any 32-bit OS that supports USB?
Only as an external USB drive.

  • New Nano, Old Computer

So wife just bought a ipod nano but itunes won't recognize it, even though the computer itself does see it. Any workarounds to make itunes 9 see it and work with it? Can I reformat the nano into something that my OS (10.4.11) recognizes?

No, you will need to use your computer that has Snow Leopard on it that is listed in your settings.

  • How can I sync my old music library in my new nano to the new library???

    CAN'T COMBINE MUSIC LIBRARIES:
Got a new 6th gen nano.  X-ferred my old music lib to new nano.  Gave my old nano to my hubs and he erased most of the music and added his own.(so, he has the same name for the old nano that I was using)  Now, when I try to add more music to my new nano, I get a message asking me if I want to erase all the music content and add the new stuff. Well, of course I do not want to do this as I have hundreds of songs in the old music library.  I also get a message saying that the old music lib is associated with a diff account name and I cannot have 2 music libs running on one iPod.  Can anyone tell me how I an get the two libs combined?  Do I need to back up the old music and add it to the new lib? Or, can I add the new music (only about 50 songs) to the old lib?  (the latter would be much easier, as it would take 10-12 CD's to store my old lib and much time burning the cd's. I naively thot that I could add music to the new nano under the same music lib as the old nano.  HELP!

  • My iTunes music is on an old laptop which I cannot get access to. Is there a way I can still get access to my music via the cloud and use on my various Apple devices including a new nano that I have just purchased?

My iTunes music is on an old laptop which I cannot access. What options do I have to play my music on the apple devices including a new Nano that I have just bought?

The files that weren't inside the media folder on the original machine need to be copied over to exactly the same paths as they had on the source machine. See this thread for an ongoing discussion of a similar problem. See also this post on migrating the iTunes library.

I recently purchased the new nano (7th generation) and I love it except for one issue.  On my old 2nd generation nano, when I played podcasts, it would play podcasts one at a time. So if I had 20 episodes of a podcast on the device, it would stop at the end of each one.
With the new nano, I can select and play a podcast, but when it’s over, it goes straight to the next one without prompting.  It keeps on playing all of the episodes of any podcast until you stop it manually.  Setting the repeat function differently does not prevent episodes from being played automatically.
This can be very irritating when I only want to listen to one podcast.  I’ve often fallen asleep listening to one episode of a podcast, only to be woken up hours later by the iPod working its way through all subsequent episodes.  It is also annoying that any podcast which has started automatically in this way is marked as ‘played’ – even if you stop it within a few seconds.  This makes it hard to keep track of what you have actually listened to.
Is there any way to set the iPod to play all the podcasts individually? I have read the User Guide from cover to cover, and can’t find a way of doing this.

    Dude or hot-spur,
Not fishy at all!!!! You really think I would have taken any more of my time to post a bogus rant? We'll no, it is unfortunately all true. I want to hear from anyone who is experiencing such problems not anyone else that wants to put there two cents in. I really don't need anymore hate or negativity. Just people's experiences because I feel like I am the only one having so many problems. Thank you
Yes, I have had some unfortunate bad luck to have so many problems at the same time, but some of them are just things you cannot do on the new OS.
    Thank you again

  • How do I get my new nano to work with my old speakers?

Before I could just plug in and go.  My old nano would charge while on the speakers, I could use the remote to change songs, it was wonderful.  Is there a way to dock my new nano?  The supposed bluetooth capabilities are the wonderful new boast of the ipod nano, but i now can't connect it to my fabulous bose speakers!  Aside from buying new speakers, there must be a way to link my ipod to my speakers.  If I use the double male ended cable my ipod does not charge, and i can't use my remote to change songs...  HELP!

  • Can i use my itunes from my old ipod on a new nano ?

i have itunes linked to my old ipod mini, can i use this one to put all the same songs on my new nano or will i have to make a new library?

iPods are linked to a particular iTunes Library but the iTunes library isn't linked to a particular iPod. I don't know as I've ever heard of a limit to the number of iPods you can sync to one iTunes library. At present, I'm currently syncing three. iTunes will recognize each iPod as a separate device with it's own preferences.

  • Can i charge my new nano with old adapter

can i charge the new nano with a old ipod nano power adapter?

thank you, is it possible to use any usb outlet charger for the nano not just made by apple, from what i heard some works but some people's ipod got fried idk
It's hard to tell for certain, but if you are going to use a third party USB AC Charger, I would check for different reviews online for whether or not they are compatible with your iPod. Just double check for input and output voltages it works with and compare it to those that your iPod Nano can handle.
