NEW nano won't mount

Just got my nano today. It won't be recognized by iTunes, wont appear in the finder or the disk utility ... i tried the Rs & the Restore (should i have to restore a brand new Pod??) but it says it is not mounted. I have switched USB ports.. the only evidence it is connected is in the System Profile USB section it says "iPod". Ive been playing around for hours. I have browsed the forum & tried various restarting and all that.. nothin! PLEASE HELP!!

Whew. I tried the fix but it didnt work at first... so i figured out how to open that "How to" file & found it was an explanation from my friend on how to easily get back. There was a little program & i'm back now. Whew! Anyway, i've tried all those R's about 10 times each but hopefully it'll work sooner or later. Otherwise ill get my friend over to do it. I dont know. Doesnt seem like theres much more i can do. Im tired of playing around right now after that close call. WHEW!
ps i never mentioned the USB card is NEW, i had to buy it today (i had had a firewire) ... it registers that it is there, like i said before, in the System Profile... but could that be the issue?

Maybe the Nano you got is defective. Have it replaced.

  • New MBP won't mount some CD/DVDs; why?

When i insert certain CD/DVDs the optical drive clicks and buzzes three times before spitting the disk out again. Even the Leopard install disk that came in the box won't mount.
Strangely every type of blank media that i have tried works without any problems, as well as a select number of DVDs and CDs (the Remote Desktop install DVD and some music CDs work perfectly). I had no problems burning disks either.
Could this strange behavior be caused by minute differences in the size of the hole in the middle of the CD/DVD?
I don't live close to an Apple Store so i would like to try to solve this myself, as i am reasonably technically competent. Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice

Got the same problem on y brand new 17". The optical drive doesn't mount most DVDs, including the System Installer DVDs included with the Mac. The disc gets pulled into the slot, but then the drive seems to have difficulties holding on to it. There is a constant rhythmic "seeking" sound (or sometimes a disturbig noise like a broken washing machine) and after about a minute, the disc gets ejected. Strangely, about 10% of the roughly 30 commercial DVDs I've tried are always accepted and being played without a problem. Those that won't mount reliably don't, but play perfectly fine in two other computers. Something's a bit loose here, it seems...

You need to purchase an newer operating system (at a minimum OS X 10.5.8) so you can use your new nano.

  • New Nano, won't accept purchased songs.

Just bought my wife a new nano, I installed the iTunes 7 update. Her iPod is recognized, but it won't let me click and drag songs to transfer them into her iPod library. It shows up as recognized but won't let me transfer any songs.

  • Ipod nano won't mount

i just got this nano after having a 20 GB monochrome, and it refuses to work. i plugged it in, expecting it to work with my already loaded itunes and ipod updater. my computer didn't recognize it, so i unplugged it and got an error message--the folder with an exclamation point. I uninstalled, reinstalled, and updated itunes and the updater, and i tried resetting the nano, but it wont reset.
the computer recognizes it as an ipod and a device, but it doesn't show up on "my computer" or in itunes or in the updater. One time the ipod updater said "ipod won't mount". i dont know what to do. doesn't apple have a help line? can i telephone them??

    Hi Jerrd15,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I am guessing you mean 2Gb instead of 20Gb. Have you tried "The Five Rs"? Have you looked at Knowledge Base Document #93716 about What To Do When Your iPod Shows Up In Windows, But Not iTunes? I don't use Windows often, so it doesn't show up in Windows (from your statement about my computer - I didn't know if there was another way of telling)? This Knowledge Base Document #61711, which troubleshoots When Your Windows PC Doesn't Recognize iPod should help.

  • New HD won't mount?

I recently installed a Seagate 160GB hard drive but it won't mount. It is set as a slave and is recognized by the system profiler. How do I format/initialize this drive in disk utility?

Timmer, welcome, first go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and double click the Disk Utility icon. Select the drive to be formatted in the left hand column of the Disk Utility window. Now select erase from the upper menu and click the Erase button below. Then select Partition from the upper menu, you can create as make as many partitions as you like or keep just the one, now name the HD. Then format the drive to Mac OS Extended (journaled) and click the Partition button below. Now select First Aid from the upper menu and run Verify and Repair, then repair Permissions. Now you should be able perform your installations. Repair Permissions again. Good Luck.

  • New Nano won't charge - please help!

Hey guys! Hoping you can help me.
Bought a new Nano 4g 2nd generation. I plugged it into my laptop, installed it and put music onto it. When I disconnect it, there is no battery life, even though it was plugged in for hours. I also have an AC adapter, and have plugged it into that, and when I disconnect it, the menu on the screen just disappears and I can't turn it on again.
This is the 2nd time I've bought a brand new iPod that has been faulty out of the box. I've tried the 5 R's and nothing seems to work. I know I may have to send it away to get a new one (shudder) but I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, what eventuated?
    Many thanks in advance!

Same Problem with one I gave my daughter for Christmas. Purchased online direclty from Apple. What's the fix? DON'T IGNORE THIS ONE GUYS!

  • New nano won't play songs in linear order

The shake to shuffle is turned off in settings and I am not inadvertently selecting shuffle to play. Is there some other setting I've overlooked to turn shuffle off?
Where it is showing up most maddeningly is while playing a three-hour radio program I download. Each hour is a "song" and iTunes sorts them by date/hours 1, 2 &3. I want to listen in order by date and hour. Nano wants me to listen to hour 1 from 5/23/13, random song, hour 3 from 6/10/13, hour 2 from 4/20/13...you get the idea. It happens whether I'm allowing to go to the next song on it's own or if I'm hitting the FF button. I'd be really nuts if I was trying to listen to an audiobook and it was skipping around like this. What am I doing wrong?
New nano is 7th gen 1.0.2.
    Thanks.

Delete this post. Figured it out from "more like this" sidebar Q&A. None of those relevent posts showed up when I originally searched or I'd not have posted new. Answer was on pg 21 of the manual, btw.

  • Ipod Nano won't mount on desktop or itunes

I am having problems with my new iPod nano.
It will not mount on my iBook or mini. I have tried it on a windows XP machine also which didn't work.
I have tried to do the combo update of OS 10.3.9 and re installed the ipod drivers and itunes ... this didn't work either.
I have tried to call apple tech support but was on hold for one hour before giving up and trying to resolve the issue myself.
I found in the system log the following message:
    Sep 19 21:20:35 localhost kernel: disk1s2: I/O error.
    Sep 19 21:20:35 localhost diskarbitrationd[91]: unable to repair /dev/disk1s2 (status code 0x00000008).
I think this indicates a hardware problem with the nano because I have identified that disk1s2 is the ipod nano by looking under usb on the system profiler.
Has anyone got any ideas before I call apple and ask them to replace the iPod ??
    Cheers
    mrbolly

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
An I/O error could be a hardware problem or it could be caused by a bad file directory on the iPod (a software issue then). So, your System Profiler can see the iPod is connected? Have you installed the software that came with the iPod nano on your Mac and then tried to restore your iPod to the factory settings? This will erase it (and in the process erase any file directory errors). On your Mac, it will be reformatted as a Mac-only drive. If you need to share it with your Windows computer, then you should restore it on the Windows computer as the Mac can read the Windows formatting but Windows can't read the Mac formatting. When you VERY first plugged the iPod nano into your Mac (if that was the first computer ever), you would have seen a message saying "optimizing for Mac OS X". This is the system reformatting your iPod for the Mac. So, it's not a surprise the Windows PC wouldn't see the iPod if you plugged it into the Mac first... Let us know if you have trouble using the iPod updater to restore your iPod nano. If you do, that would probably indicate it's time to call AppleCare Support.

  • 1st gen iPod Nano won't mount in iTunes but will in Finder.

Cable: Fine -- works with other iPods. Other cables work fine with other iPods too.
iTunes -- uninstalled and reinstalled. No effect.
iPod nano -- downloaded iTunes for Windows, ran it in Parallels on the same mac, managed to restore the iPod nano (alas, as a Windows flavour one now).
Finder can still mount it as a disk; since iTunes on the mac won't recognise it... I'm beginning to wonder what on earth's happened to iTunes!
    Any ideas?

    Hello rgc123456,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article outlines various steps that you can take and may lead to a potential resolution. The article refers to an iPod that is not recognized in both iTunes and Mac desktop, however most steps are applicable for your situation as well.

  • Nano won't mount

I've got two nano's and at roughly the same time, I'm getting the same issue. The won't show up on my Mac and aren't visable in the USB port when I check "about this mac". I've got a firewire ipod that mounts fine. I've tried using a different cable, plugging in into my powerbook, ibook and imac with the same results. I've even tried plugging them into a pc. The nano's seem fine in that they can be reset, played, charged (using external speakers/chargers) and put into disk mode. It just won't show up on the computers. Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • New Nano Won't Install - Its Searching for Drivers

Hey, I'm on a Dell Latitude running XP, I've got every Windows update and am running iTunes 7.2. My shuffle worked (and works) fine, but I upgraded to a nano and Windows refuses to recognize it - it tells me it can't find the drivers. (I get the found new hardware wizard when I connect to my USB 2.0 drive, and it shows up, with a question mark, in device manager.)
Its charging from the USB (actually, its fully charged at the moment) but iTunes doesn't recognize the nano at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, and that didn't work. Any suggestions?

After a little more intense searching, this thread from a few weeks ago had how to fix it. I have no idea how it worked, but it appears to have (my iPod is now recognized by iTunes and syncing as we speak.

  • My new Nano won't show all the album artwork when playing

When i'm listening to music on the nano, some album artworks will show and others won't. All my songs on iTunes have artwork so i don't understand why they won't show up on the iPod.
This isn't a drastc problem, just really gay.
If anyone knows how to fix the problem please let me know! Thanks!

Is your iPod appearing in "My Computer" or not?
If it isn't, then see this:

  • New nano won't charge or start up... SOLUTION

    HI there,
I'm just posting this in case anyone out there bought or received a nano for Christmas and had the same problem I had.
The nano I bought, when plugged, in showed a black and white screen (not colour). I was able to copy iTunes songs onto the nano but it would refuse to charge or operate when disconnected from the computer. Charging was done correctly via a fully powered USB2 port.
Despite charging the nano via a computer overnight, as soon as the nano was disconnected, I got the folder icon with an exclamation mark and it didn't work. I tried numerous resets and restarts to no avail.
In the end, I discovered the solution was to RESTORE the nano, not RESET it. On a Mac this is done by going to Applications -> Utilities -> Ipod Software Updater -> finding the most recent version of the updater and simply runing it. After that you just follow the prompts.
Immediatley after doing this my nano sprang into life in full colour, and I saved myself a trip to the Apple Store!
Restoring is mentioned in the nano manual but I think it really should to be highlighted in bold or something, because I suspect this could be a common issue. Official instructions are here
