New Network to share files

hi,
I have been trying to set up a network with my brother's PC so that we can exchange files over a wireless computer-to-computer connection. At the moment we run back and forth wasting loads of cds.
Does anyone know how i can set up a wireless network so that we can transfer files?
Any help would be grately appreciated,
Thanks

Hi Mark,
In the Airport menu choose Create Network.
Next, read iFelix's guide for sharing files with PCs.

  • Music files moved to a new network drive with a new volume name

I had to replace my old network attached harddisk which held all my music ( mainly mp3 ) files. This drive was automounted and had the name "MUSICHD". My new network attached storage device ( LACIE Ethernet Disk mini 500GB ) has the volume name "SHARE" and it's not possible to change it.
I copied all the files onto the the new drive, but now I have to tell iTunes that the files are not longer on a volume called MUSICHD. Could somebody be so kind and give me an advice how to do it. Shure I could re-import all the music files, but I don't like to loose all my ratings, playlists, etc.

    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   iPod 5G

to be precise. I don't let iTunes manage my files. All my mp3 files are on a NAS ( Network Attached Storage ) device ( it's a 300 GB Harddisk with a 1GBit network connection from Buffalow ).
If I add mp3 files to my library I first copy it to the NAS device and than drag and drop the files to the iTunes library. So iTunes only manages the links to that files. Files are not imported or copied to/with iTunes.
Now I have to replace that NAS device by another one. Due to this replacement I have to change the network volume-name of the device. This share is part of the link in the iTunes database for each file.
If you look into the xml file you'll find something like this:
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/SHARE/MUSIK/Blues/Dupree,%20Champion%20Jack/Blues%20From%20the%20Gutter/Dupree,%20Cha mpion%20Jack%20-%20Blues%20From%20the%20Gutter%20-%2001%20-%20Strollin'.mp3</str ing>
So the "simple" question is. How to tell iTunes that all my music files are now on another volume?

  • Can I share file between my Mac G4 and My new MacBook Pro

How can I share programs from my power mac G4 to my new MacBook Pro?

    Hi stefanfan,
    Welcome to the forum.
There are a number of ways, all of which require that you have File Sharing enabled in both Macs. File Sharing is enabled via the Sharing Preferences within System Preferences. When both Macs are networked all you have to do is open up a Finder window (just double click on your hd icon) and click on the Network icon located on the sidebar on the left of the window. The other Mac should appear, click connect and you're in.
If you have broadband and are connected via a router, does your router have more than one port? If it does, simply connect the other Mac to the port with an ethernet cable.
If you have a router with wireless capabilities (and both Macs have Airport cards installed) then you can share files wirelessly, again by enabling File Sharing.
If you do not have a router, you can connect both Macs together with a network (ethernet) cable and, once again, they will be able to see each other and you can open/transfer files from one to the other.

  • How do I share files between OS Macs on non-apple wireless network?

    Hello:
We have two iBook G4s, one with 10.4.4, and the other with 10.3.x. When they are connected via hard cable ethernet, they see each other and can share files. But when connected via wireless, they cannot see each other. What do we do?
    Thanks!

If they're on the same wireless network, there is no inherent difference between this and a wired network.
If the sharing isn't working then there's something else amiss. Can you describe the network setup in more detail so that someone might be able to spot the issue.

  • How do i share files through a network?

i got the internet through a router but cannot share files why?

On your Macs, open the Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing. Now you should be able to see this Mac from other Macs. Repeat this for every Mac that you want to be visible on the network.

  • How do I share files between two Macs on my wireless network?

I have an iMac G4 and an ibook G3 on a wireless network. I have "file sharing" activated on both computers. (Also Appletalk, which may or may not be a misguided move, but I got the idea from OSX "Help.")
When I try to get from either computer onto the other, my computer is recognized by name (another alternative is to log on as a "guest"). I'm prompted for a password. None of the passwords I use works. I've tried the administrative passwords for both computers.
How do I get beyond this hurdle to share files? I've posted elsewhere to no avail. This must be an easy one. How do you share files between two macs on one network?

Do your accounts on the machines have the same short name? It's an issue I've seen a few names.. one machine with bsmith, the other with bobsmith, but the long names for both being "Bob Smith". The login windows would confuse users because it showed their names, but because the short names didn't match, it wouldn't work.
The password you should use is the administrative one, so I don't know why you're not having luck.

How do I share files between computers (mac's) on the same wireless network?

Turn on File Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing, then you should be able to see them in the other Macs' Finder sidebars (under Shared). Click on them, click Connect As, and log in with the user credentials you're sharing from.

  • Can I share files between two different networks at same location?

Until TWC can offer DOCSIS 3.0 later this year or next...
    - In my home I have a closet where all my audio, video and network come together.
    - I have two cable modems from Time Warner
    - Modem A goes to a WRT320N; 192.168.0.1
-- This router connects all my "heavy" downloads, ie. DirecTV receivers, Netflix, home server w/videos, gaming, etc.
    - Modem B goes to a E2000; 192.168.1.1
-- This router connects my everyday use computers so they don't suffer poor speeds from all the traffic on Modem A
My question is, how or can I somehow share files between these two routers without the need for hitting the modems? Obviously I can just push files over the Internet but I am doing it at a much slower speed due to upload restrictions on the modem.
Thank you for any help on this!

The easiest way would be to assign LAN IP 192.168.1.2 to the WRT320N and disable the DHCP server. Then assign static IP addresses in 192.168.1.* to all devices connected to the WRT at the moment, e.g. 192.168.1.10, 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.2, DNS 192.168.1.2 (or DNS servers of your ISP).
Now you can connect a LAN port of the WRT to a LAN port of the E2000. All DHCP clients get the IP address from the E2000 which will assign the E2000 as gateway, i.e. they use the E2000 for internet. All other devices will have static IP addresses and use the WRT as gateway.

  • Networking 2 computers to share files problem. won't recognize login/pass

    hey
i really need help with this.
i now have 2 computers, a powermac G5 and a powerbook G4 connecting to each other with an ethernet cable so i can share files. for some reason when i try to connect as a user instead of guest it won't recognize my login/or password. it was working briefly before.
the only thing i did different was go into my account settings in both computer's preferences and changed the user name and password so they would be the same. they were the same before other than a capital letter but that sometimes affects things so i wanted to make them the exact same. now no matter what i try i cannot login to the network other than as a guest. and i want to be able to access my whole other computer.
    this is what it says:
'Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator.'
appletalk is on in the ethernet tab.
    file sharing is on.
    i've repaired disk permissions.
any help on this asap would be great. thanks

How to use an iPod with more than one computer.
You say the iPod is already set to manual transfer. If so, files cannot be automatically be erased from the iPod when connecting to a different computer that does not contain the same files.
Manual transfer is how you have control of the iPod when using it on more than one computer. Files on the iPod are added and deleted manually by the user and not automatically by the computer and iTunes.

  • Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion

About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!

I had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can I get Macs and PCs to share files on same network?

I have a 2009 iMac running Mavericks and a Macbook Pro retina also on Mavericks.   I also have a desktop running Windows 7 Pro and a laptop on Windows 8.1.   I have a cable modem (Comcast) with multiple ethernet jacks and a WIFI modem.   The Macs see each other on the network but the PCs don't always see each other and do not see the Macs.   Can someone run me thru the basics on networking so I can share files?    Thank you.
    Mark

    Arthur,
Thanks for the link.   It is a good starting point.   Part of my problem is that I do not understand file sharing protocols on the PC side.   The Mac sharing "just works."   I keep getting issues with permissions, or, on some days,  the PC just does not show up on my finder.   Let me take a look at the link and try some things and I will report back.

    hi,
somewhere on the windows machineshould be something like "network setup wizard". exactly where it is and what it is called i cannot remember off the top of my head, windows help is actually slightly useful here, it should have a link to it.
all the options checked on the mac are only what services the mac is offering to other machines, they have nothing to do with the services it can access (mostly...).
oh yeah, to actually connect to the pc after you have turned its sharing on, use the finder, or, when it does not show the pc (this happens on and off, possibly a refresh problem apple...) choose go --> connect to server and enter smb://<pc's name or ip>
to find the ip, the easiest way i think is
    start --> run --> cmd ->> ipconfig

  • How do I share files?

Despite being a veteran Mac user, I have am completely stumped at sharing files on Mac OS10.7.
I have spoken with Apple Support by telephone (for over an hour) and they were unable to assist. I spoke to three people.
I asked about using iCloud for file sharing, but the iDisk feature is now apparently obsolete, so there is no way to do this. I was informed that if I was in my office, and wanted to share a picture of my dog with my wife, then this would be possible, but not share, or upload a folder in anyway (I have neither a wife, nor dog so that particular feature is not valid as a productivity tool to my work).
I was also informed that file sharing is not possible betwen a 10.7 and 10.6 machine.
    I found this kb: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4598
Which (despite being updated in July 2012) suggests using iDisk, Zip, Floppy, or just burning a CD.
I am unaware as to how to browse the support forums (it now asks you to ask a question, but does not appear to allow easy browsing to find solutions), so if this question is posted twice, my apologies. (if anyone can tell me how I actually browse the support forums as we used to be able to, I'd appreciate that also).
Can anyone shed light on the above? Thanks in advance.

Hi Kessler, thanks for the response.
I have 10.7.5, but cannot see this Airdrop feature, despite having checked various kb articles and attempting to go through it with Apple Support, who simply passed me to another colleague after a long delay. Neither could explain its absence. I have spent several hours today researching this, but finding the new suport area difficult to navigate in any meaningful manner.
Also, I am unclear how one uses Airdrop to share files with an older machine, such as 10.6?
The way you describe file sharing is pretty much the way I am familiar with using it. However, when I attempt to connect to one of the machines, the icon for it first of all shows a timeout error, and has now vanished. I have switched on and off filesharing on both machines, and restarted them to no avail.
USB drives (and floppy, zip and CDs as recommended by the Apple kb) are inconvenient for project folders that need regular updating. I use dropbox, but this is not always ideal as we had to log out one dropbox user to allow a diffrent account to connect on the same machine. This leads to privacy issues.
Perhaps more specifically, why does the mac in question disappear from the network and sidebar? This worked perfectly when both machines were on 10.6.
