New NI CompactRIO calls the question, "¿Quien is mas macho, Intel quad-core Atom or 4-year-old i7?"

Perhaps you remember the Saturday Night Live TV sketch from 1979 where Bill Murray played a game show host who asked the show’s titular question, “¿Quien es mas macho?”
Today, Matt Spexarth, Principal Product Manager for Embedded Systems at National Instruments (NI), called the NI CompactRIO controller introduced this week at NI Week—the model cRIO-9039, which pairs a 1.91GHz, quad-core Intel Atom CPU with a Xilinx Kintex-7 325T FPGA—the highest-performance CompactRIO ever released. That includes the existing cRIO-9082 controller, which pairs a 1.33GHz, dual-core Intel i7 CPU and a Xilinx Spartan-6 LX150 FPGA. So both the processor and the FPGA have been upgraded in the new CompactRIO controller. The NI cRIO-9039 controller es mas macho.
NI Model cRIO-9039 Controller in an 8-slot CompactRIO Chassis
The new NI CompactRIO controller runs security-enhanced NI Linux Real-Time. It has an SDHC card slot for non-volatile storage and can directly operate a local, graphical UI (user interface) as a human-machine interface. Another key performance feature, noted Spexarth, is a bank of DDR3 SDRAM attached directly to the Kintex-7 FPGA to allow the FPGA to directly handle large data sets, to process large FFTs for example.
As with the entire line of NI CompactRIO controllers, you program the cRIO-9039 controller using NI’s LabVIEW graphical development environment with its many add-on modules including LabVIEW FPGA. In addition, the new CompactRIO controller maintain compatibility with the many CompactRIO plug-in I/O hardware modules.

Whygirl,
it reads as though an internal disk upgrade (and possibly a battery replacement) would suffice for you, and those two together would be far less expensive than a new MacBook Pro. Yes, you could install either a HDD or a SSD in place of its current internal HDD. You could look at the Hitachi Travelstar 7K1000 as an example of a suitable 1 TB HDD; SSDs are more expensive per unit of storage than a HDD, but might be worth the extra cost if your apps are disk-bound. (I put a Samsung 840 PRO into my 13-inch Mid 2010 model, and it’s been working well.) Note that Chrome might be responsible for the extra heat (and the extra heat is responsible for the increased volume from the fans kicking in); Chrome isn’t optimized for use on 64-bit versions of OS X, like 10.8.5.

  • Why wasn't the new iPad Mini called the iPad Mini 2 ?

    The title given to it "iPad Mini Retina Display" is hardly a snappy title, especially when compared to the other iPads.
    Could it be that this is not a major new version but an interim model ( a bit like Windows Vista was an interim until Microsoft were ready to launch Windows 8 ), to try and stem the drift away from Apple to Android this Christmas, until Apple are ready to introduce the real iPad Mini 2 model next year ?

    95bulls wrote:
    It had no big improvement except the retina display, therefore it doesn't really qualify to be called the iPad 2.
    Not true. The iPad mini with Retina Display also has the new A7 CPU, significantly improved GPU, the M7 Motion Coprocessor, probably more RAM (though that's not yet confirmed), and options for larger storage along with a few other new features. So it would by most measures qualify to be called an 'iPad mini 2", though Apple chose not to. They didn't designate the 3rd gen iPad and 4th-gen iPad as "iPad 3" or "iPad 4", either. Why they didn't we can only guess.

  • 2.0 GHz Intel Quad core i7 vs. 3.7 GHz Intel Duo Core i7 Processor: Why not make the Quad Core 3.7GHz?

    I don't really understand processors, but is the 2.0GHz Quad Core i7 really a better processor in terms of performance? If it has 4 cores why not give it greater processing speed like 2.7 or 3.0 GHz?
    I am asking because I am thinking about getting the high end Mac Mini, but I see that it's processor runs at 2.0GHz and the others in the line run at 2.5 and 2.7 respectively. Why is this?

    I'm really oversimplifying here, but...
    Let's just assume that each core runs at full speed all the time, the total performance of that processor would be the sum of the running totals of each core:
    Duo Core i7 = 2 (cores) * 2.7 GHZ = 5.4 Ghz total processor power
    Quad Core i5 = 4 (cores) * 2.0 GHZ = 8.0 Ghz
    Like I said, oversimplified.  But, you get the point.  Not to mention, most apps still aren't optimized, so at a given time they only use a single core anyway. In this case, it'd be more beneficial to have more cores, since they would (hypothetically) be able to run more simultaneous processes (four vs. two in your case).
    I gues the greater question is: what were you planning on using the mini for?  Most CPUs go underutilized anyway, so you may be better off getting a 2.0, and maxing out your RAM and maybe adding a SSD.  Those upgrades (the SSD especially) will result in a very noticeable increase in performance.

  • Refurb. 27'' 2.93GHz Intel Quad-Core i7  (July'10) vs new i5 or i7???

    I am looking for an iMac for use specifically for photoediting. I'm ignorant with computers for the most part.
    I'm looking at the 27'' refurbished because it is cheaper and I will upgrade the RAM myself to 8g. Here's the link.

    Do I need i7 or should I go i5? Do I go with a new iMac or the refurbished (it only has 1TB storage too...)
    Help.

    Decide for yourself but a system based on i5 750 isn't that much more expensive compared to one based on C2Q. Also note that the LGA-775 (the socket for Core 2 Quad and Duo) is basically dead, there won't be a lot more CPU's released for that socket.
    I also wouldn't bother with high end video cards unless you're planning on working with 3D a lot

  • Hi, my Macbook says its connected to the internet, but it's not working.  It's about 2 years old and has been fine up until now.  Its the same internet provider and I have a work PC laptop that is connecting fine.  Any help greatly appreciated.  Liz

    Hi,
    My MacBook Pro won't connect to the internet, although it says it is connected.  The laptop is about 2 years old and up until now has worked fine.  My work PC laptop is connecting to the internet fine so I know it can't be the connection.   I've checked for Adware/Malware (just in case) via safemac and that all seems fine.
    I'm running OSX 10.8.5.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

    Believe it or not, that article helped me find a temporary solution. After reading it I realized that the problem did have to do with my DNS settings. I had taken the DNS settings that my ISP gives me when I dial up and plugged them into the configuration for my AirPort card. This apparently caused a problem because, although my wireless network is always on, it's not always connected to the internet. So those DNS settings were invalid most of the time.
    I found that as long as I leave the area for DNS servers blank, the computer logs in normally. This further confirms my suspicion that something was trying to access the internet at login. I guess as long as I don't specify any DNS servers, the computer realizes it doesn't have an internet connection through my AirPort card.
    So I just created two network locations: one for when my network is connected to the internet and one for when it isn't. In the first, I kept my original DNS settings because they work as long as I have an internet connection. In the second I did not specify any DNS servers. This seems to work fine, but I'd still like to know what is trying to access the internet at login. I've disabled the automatic update feature in all my programs that have it, but that doesn't seem to help the slowdown at login. Does anyone know how I could figure out what program is trying to access the internet?

  • What are the normal operating temps for a G5 Quad Core Power Mac Tower?

    I asked this within another thread but I am afraid it will get buried and think it deserves its own item.
    I just downloaded Temperature Monitor and have been looking at the data. I have no idea how to interpret the figures and there are no listings of specified upper and lower limits even though there is an area where those numbers should go.
    The numbers are constantly in flux, going up and down a degree or two but here is a recent example from a screenshot taken while I was running WORD (but not working on any document), Terminal, Apple Mail, Firefox (two windows open), Temperature Monitor, Preview, Dashboard and Finder:
    Air Tunnel 99.5 degrees F
    Air Tunnel Heatsink 92.8 degrees F
    CPU A Core 1 Diode 107.5 degrees F
    CPU A Core 2 Diode 107.8 degrees F
    CPU B Core 1 Diode 108.0 degrees F
    CPU B Core 2 Diode 111.5 degrees F
    Drive Bay 87.8 degrees F
    Graphics processor chip 131.0 degrees F
    Main Logic Board Air Inlet --- (this is always missing)
    Main Logic Board Backside 108.7 degrees F
    Memory Controller Diode 133.9 degrees F
    SMART Disk WDC WD2500JS-41M.... 104.0 degrees F.
    The icon for the program, in the dock, gives me an ever changing number that is perhaps an overall reading - an average. Right now the number is 106.4 degrees F (taken some minutes after the screenshot providing the above data). Always in flux.
    Do any of these temps look alarming? And HOW and WHERE do I find out what the temperatures SHOULD be?
    PS I have APPLE RAM.

    If you want to find out whether a sensor value is within normal limits, please select the menu item Window > Show Overview (or press Apple+1) and look for the limits in the third and fourth column of the sensor table. They contain the known official limits Apple has specified for readings acquired at the given sensor locations. If no limit is given in the table, this either means that it does not make sense to specify a limit for this particular sensor (e.g. the battery capacity should not have limits), or Apple hasn't published any specifications for this sensor.
    Note that all up-to-date Macintosh models automatically shut down or enter sleep mode if one of the readings exceeds a critical limit. For this reason it is impossible that your computer can be damaged in an overtemperature condition.

  • Can the Apple Store in Munich change a peeled sync cable over 2 years old?

    Hi,
    I have a peeled sync cable on my iPhone and I just wanted to know if they could replace it for free even though my iPhone was out of warrenty.
    Thanks.

    Doubtful if its out if warranty, but we have no way of knowing.
    They'll replace it in exchange for money though I.e. you buy a new one.

  • HT201303 I have found out to my expense, that my 5 year old has been purchasing various app add ons with out having to input a password. It appears that if the password has been entered previously, pending timing you can ( a 5 year old can) make purchases

    Is there a preference were password must be entered each and every time a request to purchase is made, regardless on timing since password previously entered.

    All purchases are considered final, but you can try contacting iTunes support and explain what happened and see if they will refund or credit you : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption
    To try and stop it happening again, you should be able to turn off in-app purchases via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off', and (depending upon what iOS version that you have on your iPad) you might also be able to set 'Require Password' to 'Immediately' on the Restrictions screen.

  • Create a new session when calling a new/different transaction

    Hello Everyone,
    I have a dialog program in which I have a button that calls a different transaction.  I would like for this transaction to open in a new session.  This can be easily done (and there are several posts on this) with FM's TH_CREATE_MODE or ABAP4_CALL_TRANSACTION.  Additionaly it can be done by remote enabling a custom FM and have the transaction call within your custom FM.
    My issue is that I want to pass the transaction a table so that it fills a select-options table at the selection screen.  Then of course I want to skip the selection screen and execute the transaction.  I can pass data if the selection field is a parameter field, but I need to pass the new transaction a table so that a select-options field can be filled.  Does anyone know how to do this and could recommend a proper approach?
    Best Regards,
    Scott

    It seems that you want to start of a new report by calling the ABAP4_CALL_TRANSACTION. There is a parameter USING_TAB which you can use to fill up the data (must be BDC data) to be able to pass to called transaction. Since you are dealing with the select-options this is not a good idea.
    I would suggest:
    From your Module pool,
    Fill the select option table and export it to ABAP memory using EXPORT
    Now,
    1. Create a dummy program ZDUMMY to SUBMIT your report ZREPORT.
    2. IMPORT the exported select option table from memory in ZDUMMY
    3. SUBMIT report ZREPORT with the select option
    4. Attach transaction code say ZDUMMY.
    In your module pool, after exporting the memory call the FM ABAP4_CALL_TRANSACTION with ZDUMMY transaction.

  • How can I call the Class and have a PDF appear in seperate window?.

    I would like to call the class/interface ZCL_UIU_PRN_ACCOUNT2, method Collect_data and have a Smartform executed to produce a PDF document in a Seperate window.
    Where I have an issue is in opening another window to display the PDF.
    I know the Standard PDF Facsheet does exactly this, but that is triggered via the Web browser and calls a Java script, avoiding and events and round-server trip processing. I would have changed the button values so that when pressed it does process the various events and eventually ends up at EH_ONPREVIEW for the BP_HEAD/Overview. I know just need to open a new window and call the process to create the PDF via Smartform.
    Any suggestions would be more than welcome. I have spent so much time on this, and have gained no real ground, so far.

  • How to save web service request key and response value in cache to reduce calling the service for same type of requests

    Hi
    I have a web service which return the response based on the request key.
    I need to save the key and the response value in cache for around 30mins
     to reduce the web service calls for better performance.
    Appreciate if any once can share a sample code

    ObjectCache cache = MemoryCache.Default;//Assign key for the cache
    string cacheKey = strParameters;//Check whether the key exists in the cache//If exists assign the values from the cache instead of calling the webservice//else call the web service and add the response to the cache
    if (cache.Contains(cacheKey))
    results = cache.Get(cacheKey);
    else
    { //calling the web service client
    using (service.webservice fd = new service.webserviceContractClient())
    { //Call the web service function to get the results
    results = fd.DataSearch(strParameters);
    } //Create the cache expiration policy. I have created for 30 minutes.
    CacheItemPolicy cacheItemPolicy = new CacheItemPolicy();
    cacheItemPolicy.AbsoluteExpiration = DateTime.Now.AddMinutes(30); //Add the response to the cache based on the key
    cache.Add(cacheKey, results, cacheItemPolicy);
