New NLE Build Specs I've Selected for My Client - Comments?

OK, after mucho work, I've come up with what seems to be the best bang for the buck for my video conversion client who needs new systems.
Here's what I selected:
Antec DF-85 Black ATX Full Tower Computer Case (tons of space, USB 3.0 ports, CPU cooler cutout, 9 internal 3.5" drives, 7 fans, long video cards fit) - $156
CORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-1000HX 1000W Power Supply  (any chance I need more than 1000W?) - $230
ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (Note: only available board supported by BlackMagic for their DeckLink/IntensityPro video capture cards, so this is pretty much it unless I want to chance a non-supported board with equivalent specs) - $290
Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601950 (I intend to overclock to some degree, probably under 4GHz) - $270
Prolimatech Armageddon CPU Cooler - Intel Socket LGA 775/1156/1366 Heatsink, 140mm Fan Compatible  (Selected this one because one Web site review of the ASUS board specifically used this cooler which fit nicely without covering up the 6 RAM slots; also this one gets good reviews everywhere) - $65
XIGMATEK eXTREME SILENT Series XSF-F1452 140mm Case Fan x 2  (for the above cooler to improve cooling) - $20
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 24GB (6 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9T2-24GBRL - $285
Palit NE5X56T01142-1041F GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card  (lots of DDR5 RAM, 384 cores, 256-bit memory path, well reviewed) - $280
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD322GJ/U 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive (for OS and programs) - $43
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive x 4 (for RAID 0) - $260
SONY Black 12X BD-R 2X BD-RE 8X DVD+R 5X DVD-RAM 8X BD-ROM 8MB Cache SATA Internal Blu-ray Burner Blu-ray Burner BD-5300S-0B - OEM - $110
Link Depot 39.37" SATA II Cable with Locking Latch Model LD-SATA-1 $4 X 5 Drives + DVD Burner - $24
Total Cost:  $2033.00
With Windows 7 Professional OEM and an Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 upgrade, that adds another $434 making a total of $2,467. I think the client can handle that. He will also probably get a Matrox MX02 Mini or a BlackMagic DeckLink/IntensityPro card to handle video capture. I'm leaving that decision up to his tech. If he needs to go to a full CS5 Production Suite, then he needs to tack on another $500-600 over the Premiere Pro upgrade price which will bring him up to $3,000 for the whole system.
He needs to replace three machines in the video department, but my guess is we'll start with one, maybe two, and the productivity improvement over the crap he's using now may mean he doesn't need a third one. Considering he's upgrading from six-year-old+ Pentium 4 machines with 2GB RAM, no RAID, Adobe Premiere 1.5, these new systems should come as a shock. Hopefully the price for the upgrade won't be as big a shock.
I welcome any comments on the system laid out above, positive or negative.
I know I could improve this slightly with say, 10,000 RPM Velociraptors for the OS drive, and stuff like that, but I've tried to keep this pretty vanilla to hold the cost down.
Let me know what you guys think.

On the other hand, I just found this Tom's Hardware memory benchmark article which shows the difference between various RAM speeds and timings while doing video editing with Adobe Premiere CS4. The differences are minimal at best maybe 2-3 percent.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/memory-scaling-i7,2325-10.html
It's not clear to me that the difference is worth either the difference in cost or more importantly how much work it might take to get a stable system.
In the last half hour I've looked up a LOT of Web postings about the ASUS P6X58D Premium and 1600 memory. It's all over the place as to whether the issues people have had are with the RAM, the CPU memory controller, or their memory settings. I don't want to go through a couple weeks of RMAing memory back and forth to get it right. I need to have this machine up within the next 6 weeks and the client isn't going to be able to order for another two weeks.
For one thing, if I decide to go with the 970, I'll have less need to overclock. I was not intending to overclock the 950 that high anyway, and if I go to the 970, I can overclock even less. So whether the RAM can be speeded up may not matter as much.
I definitely won't buy multiple sets like you did, I've heard too many warnings about that not being guaranteed by the vendors.
I also just found this Adobe Hardware Forum post which addresses this issue:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/695662?tstart=60
I quote Mr. Bowen:
Quote
When  the I7 platform released, Intel's official supported specs were really  low. They only officially supported DDR3 1333 and that was with 3 sticks  of ram only. If you had 6 sticks then the supported clock speed of the  ram was 1066. Intel also only supported a QPI of 4.8 on most cpu's  accept for the top 1 or 2 which had a QPI support of 6.4. The  Motherboard manufacturers decided to go well beyond those specs because  they were way to conservative and to push their products. The  manufacturers like ASUS supported DDR3 1600 or even DDR2000 but only in 3  stick configurations. If you had any problems with 6 stick  configurations at DDR3 1600 or higher, they would respond they only  supported specs greater than Intel's with 3 stick configurations( I was  surprised they hid behind that back then when I talked to the engineers  of one of the companies). This does not mean that it will not work. It  just means you wont get support from the motherboard manufacturer if you  have problems. It really was a joke. So much so one of the companies I  can't name here changed their website to reflect that just because I  brought the subject up and told them this policy was no where on their  website at all when we tested their board.
So  what does this all mean. The QVL is the Qualified Vendor List. This is  the hardware officially tested by the motherboard manufacturer's R&D  or tech support. This hardware is approved to work without issues and  will be fully supported by their tech support. The caveat is though only  in the officially supported configuration. Normally as long as you buy  ram off the QVL list, you can run those in 6 stick configurations and  you likely wont have problems as long as you set the bios up right. If  you buy ram that is not listed on the QVL now days with DDR3 then it's a  gamble on whether it will work or not without issues unless you have  some company like us that tests all of this and works with the Ram  company's engineering to fix any problems. So the best advice here for  DYI is stick to the QVL but remember you are not locked into the  official supported config. That is way to conservative. I hope that  helps.
End Quote
It's that "as long as you set the bios right" bit that concerns me. I don't want to spend two days tweaking the RAM settings as well as the CPU overclock considering the performance gain is likely to be less than 5%.

    Hi guys,
I posted this on Tom's Hardward and got the go ahead to order parts but I wanted to double check.
I am a non-computer person building a computer to edit a 70 minute documentary movie. I've been doing some research and here is my parts list. I'm looking to order this in a week because I need to get going on this project. I plan on using Adobe Premier CS 6. I looked at a few different websites for this  project and came up with the following. If I've made a mistake, please just tell me what to replace it with (again, this is totally new territory and I'm going on just trusting folks who know this stuff.)  Here is the list.

  • Another new PC build for a hobbyist

Hi all, I've spent a couple of days searching around for recommendations on a new PC build and found a lot of good information on this forum. I'm replacing my home desktop, which is used for Premiere CS6 (family videos/enthusiast stuff - lately GoPro HD h.264 and some Canon 7D files) running on Windows 7 Pro x64. I'll be reusing some SATA drives but everything else is new. I realize that X79/i7-3930k provides far more performance, but mainly for budget reasons I think I'd prefer to stick with Ivy Bridge. Here's what I'm leaning towards:
CPU: Intel i7-3770k 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) Ivy Bridge
MB: Likely Asus P8Z77-V LK ATX
    RAM: Probably CORSAIR Vengeance LP DDR3 1600 16Gb (or 32Gb) 2x8Gb (or 4x8Gb)
PSU: SeaSonic X-Series 1050W 80 Plus Gold (only $10 more than the 850W so why not)
    CASE: Fractal Design Define R4
GPU: GTX 570 (likely this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127682)
    DRIVES
         OS: 256Gb SSD (Crucial M4/Plextor 830)
         Media/Projects: RAID-0 2x 1Tb HD (reuse from old system)
         Previews/Cache/Exports: 2Tb 7200rpm HD
Add in misc DVD+RW, CPU cooler, etc. This prices out to ~$1,300 (without HD's but including the SSD) which is ok, little cheaper would be ok but couple of hundred more is fine too. I'm mostly undecided on the GPU, wondering if a GTX 660 is worth the $70 more (1344 vs. 480 CUDA cores and 2GB 192-bit GDDR5 vs 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 for the GTX 660 vs GTX 570 respectively).
I'd really appreciate any thoughts on this build overall and suggestions on alternate components; thanks very much for all the information!

CPU - agree 3770K is a better choice as you have newer instruction sets, superior performance, lower power consumption and support for second generation of QuickSync offer hardware transcoding support.
Motherboard - The Deluxe is an outstanding board depending on how much you may really want the Marvell option you may want to consider the P8Z77-V Pro which also offers Thundebolt natively on the board. ( Although the Deluxe has a TB header in place for when the Thunderbolt EX expansion card is released ).
Additionally on both they offer a TPU switch which you can enable to have a easy 4.2 to 4.3GHz OC without any other interaction or adjustment.
CPU Cooler - I would advise something basic at least like a Hyper 212Plus or Hyper212 EVO. If you want to more cost effective the Hyper TX3 is very low cost and solid but not as effective at heat disipation.
PSU - Seasonic is excellent choice especially the X gold series very effiicent and the load performance is outstanding additionally generally any loads undder 25% will not have the fan spin at all helping to keep a very quiet system.
Chassis is a very solid option
GPU - I would consider  GTX660Ti or the new GTX660 considerbly superior power efficiecy as well as there is hardware 4K econder support while not active it is there waiting for software applications to support. Additionally you have superior multi monitor flexibility up to 4 displays and it is quieter and cooler. Lastly performance is superior. I would consider ASUS GTX660 or GTX660TI DirectCU II.
    SSD
Crucial drives have very solid firmware but write performance is not as strong ( this is relative overall a solid drive ). Depending on your write and read usage a different controller may make more sense. In this case you may want to consider a different SSD.
Corsair's new GS or GTX are very solid in the firmware development. If you will have a large amount of Incompressible data which includes certain types of TIF and PSD*, JPEG, video and sound files, ZIP files, etc. Then you may want to select a OCZ drive or a SSD based on a Marvell contrler or the new Corsair Neutron series. Those have the benefit of not taking a penelaty with incompressible data. With the overall price drops though on SSDs I would recommend 240GB especially as performance of the SSD will vary depending on capacity filled ( to a extent ). With that noted the Force GS and GTX which use SandForce have very strong performance for overall application usage.
Lastly depending on the maximum read and write speeds you may be better suite to use SSD Caching instead of the raid you are considering on the Marvell ports. Read speeds would be improved considerbly while writes would be stabilized but not overall extended
    Hope this helps!

iWeb is not working for sending podcasts to iTunes, so I need a new web building tool. What is the closest thing to iWeb that I can use, which also supports podcasts?

There's no reason you can't go on using iWeb for this - with iWeb '08 you have to publish to a local folder (i.e. on your Mac) and then upload the contents of the folder (not the folder itself) to your hosting service: and you have to make sure you enter the new URL in the Publish information or the feed won't work properly; this done, an iWeb podcast should work fine.
Of course there is still the problem that iWeb is not supported and sooner or later a system upgrade may break it. You could look at RapidWeaver: you can make podcasts with that, though the last time I looked into that - which was admittedly some time back - I didn't feel it was ideal for this. There are lots of other podcast creation programs or services around. WordPress is OK but it may be a bit of a steep learning curve: Libsyn is an online service that seems to work reliably. Blogger writes messy feeds but does usually work. Podcast Maker used to work well - I used it myself a few years back - but it rather looks as if it's gone moribund and it may not be reliable with Lion/Mountain Lion, so you would want to check into that.

  • New System Build For Premiere 5.5 Looking For Advice

Hi there, this is my first time on here and it looks like this is the best place for advice.
So I've been tasked to build a new computer for a client for Premiere 5.5. He's running a very basic studio setup and his main complaint is how it takes
such a long time to render video. He told me it takes him about 6 hours to render a 40 minute sequence to MPEG2 standard(this is what he mostly renders as). I did some playing around and it turns out that his current system is relatively good but it uses a HD 6990 as its GPU(which can't even take advantage of Premier's hardware rendering capability!)
Now initially I was going to go the all SSD route with a a budget of about $2500 or so. However, after doing some reading on here, I've decided that this
isn't necessarily the best way. So I will only run the OS of an SSD. Here is what I have so far:
    PROCESSOR:
    Intel Core i7-2600K Quad-Core Socket LGA1155, 3.40Ghz, 8MB L3 Cache
(I will overclock this as much as possilbe with the Noctua cooler)
    MOTHERBOARD:
Asus P8Z68-V Pro Socket 1155 Intel Z68 Chipset
    RAM:
    G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600MHz (PC3-12800) 16GB (4x4GB) Dual Channel Kit
    VIDEO CARD:
    EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Superclocked 1280MB GDDR5 (012-P3-1573-AR) nVidia GeForce GTX 570Chipset(797MHz) 1280MB GDDR5 Memory(3900MHz)
    POWER SUPPLY:
OCZ ZX Series 1000W Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold Certified Power Supply (OCZ-ZX1000W)
    HARD DRIVES:
OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5" 120GB Solid State Drive (OPERATING SYSTEM DISK)
Western Digital VelociRaptor (WD3000HLFS) 300GB SATA II 10000RPM 16MB x2 (Project Disk Run in RAID 0)
Western Digital VelociRaptor (WD3000HLFS) 300GB SATA II 10000RPM 16MB x2 (Output Disk Run in RAID 0)
    CPU COOLER:
Noctua NH-D14 Six Heatpipe Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
    OPTICAL DRIVE:
    ASUS DRW-24B1ST Black SATA
Now if there are any suggestions, PLEASE let me know how I can improve this build. I really don't want to disappoint the guy, especially if he isn't going to get a great performance boost in terms of rendering time. Considering he can't use GPU acceleartion right now on his $600+ card, I would imagine this should be a better build.
Also, will there be a problem if I run four hard drives in RAID 0 mode using the motherboards onboard RAID capability?

    Photomaster,
I think you are on the right track to speed up this guys system (2600k w/ OC, dual RAID 0) and I second Harm's comment about large 7200 drives being better than the prev. generation VR 300GB drives (HLFS series).
Be aware however that "rendering" does mean different things, and if you are thinking that MPE will increase AME rendering to MPEG2-DVD by 10x you will be very disappointed! Here is the rest of the story...
Timeline rendering, as benchmarked in PPBM5, will indeed speed up on the order of 10x with the addition of MPE using the appropriate nVidia hardware. PPBM5 is a test carefully constructed test that represents how long it takes for Adobe Premiere Pro to prepare (render) a timeline for playback. In actual use, your results will vary. Some timelines may only be sped up by 2x (i.e. very complex and/or using non-MPE effects, filters, etc.) to more than 1,000,000x faster for the case where a non-MPE system requires rendering, whereas the MPE system can play back the timeline without ANY rendering (i.e. simple SD timelines with MPE compliant effects).
Next, full timeline rendering and "exporting" from a Premiere Pro timeline to MPEG2-DVD format are both sped up, but more on the order of 2x. On my fast quad-core system, I'm getting about a 1.8x improvement from MPE assistance using the PPBM5 project for testing.
Finally, using Adobe Media Encoder (AME), and I can only speak for CS5, the MPE hardware does not even come into play and does not speed things up at all. On a positive note, Harm has reported that AME ver. 5.5 ran just over 2x as fast as ver 5.0.3; possibly the newer version is in fact tapping the MPE hardware for this gain?
    Regards,
    Jim

  • I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail is not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice

I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures for my Mail are not showing up. I have the signatures inthe preference panes and selected for the email address, but when I make a new message, the signature shows as none and doesn't give me a choice. Yesterday, the signatures were stacking instead of switching to the one I wanted to choose.

I had this and fixed it.
I had upgraded to Mountain Lion and my signatures in Mail were fine. But then about a week later, I got a new computer and used Migration Assistant to copy my stuff to the new machine. Upon opening Mail, I had all the correct Signature information in the Preferences>Signatures window, but nothing worked.
After lots of hunting, I found the Signature Folder. It's in:
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
Looking at my previous setup (which works) I saw in that folder two types of files: .webarchive and .siganture
Looking in my new machine's Signature folder, I saw only the .webarchive folders, not the .signature folders
Since this was literally a clone of my previous setup to a new machine, here's what I did:
    1. Quit Mail
    2. In Problem machine, go to
    Yourusername>Library>Mail>V2>MailData>Signatures
    3. Move the Signatures folder someplace safe, but out of the MailData folder
    4. Get the Signatures Folder from the working install (like a backup) and copy it to the MailData folder on the problematic machine
    5. Start Mail on the problem machine
This worked for me. I don't know why Migration Assistant didn't copy the full signature folder, but this fixed it. It worked perfectly partly because I had just backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner and the very next day set up the new machine. I don't know where Lion or earlier versions of mail stored signatures, but the absence of the .signature filetype seems to be the problem.
    Hope this helps

    Hi Guru,
I woul like to build a query based on different selection for each colunm , could advice me how to build this input schedule.
the structure should be like this :
Drop down list for each field selection , the user can do different selection for each column .
Field selection 1     Field selection 1     Field selection 1     Field selection 1
Field selection 2     Field selection 2     Field selection 2     Field selection 2

Field selection 5     Field selection 5     Field selection 5     Field selection 5
Field selection 6     Field selection 6     Field selection 6     Field selection 6
Field selection 7     Field selection 7     Field selection 7     Field selection 7
Field selection 8     Field selection 8     Field selection 8     Field selection 8

    Hi,
I dont think this can be done.
In the columns, you can use EVMBR function. The user can select the member. Accordingly, the data cell should fetch the value using EVGTS. However, you need to make sure that your column represents only one dimension. So, you need to use the other dimensions judisiously in the EVGTS function.
The problem comes now. You cant override the data cell with some other value, because that cell has a formula. If you write some value in that cell, the EVGTS function gets overwritten. And if you cant write value in the cell, then what will you send.
    Hope you got my idea.

  • My new computer build, good bang for the buck?

I'm just starting out with CS 5.5, need a new computer, and want a solid base for upgrading as I go. I think I'm on the right track but uncertain of the video card.
    Intel 970 six core
Asus Rampage III 1366 X58 ATX
    MSI Lightning GTX 580 3072MB
    Asus PA246Q 24''
    #3 (total 24GB) G. Skill Ripjaws 8GB (2x4GB) 24O-Pin DDR3 1600 (PC312800) F3-1280CL9D08GBRL
    #6 Samsung F3 3.0 7200 32MB
Corsair Series Gold 850 WAtt Power Suppy
Antec Kuhlen H20 920 CPU Cooling System
    Logotec 500 corded mouse
Logetec corded slim line back lit
    Lain Li A77F case
I'm uncertain if the GTX 580 3GB video card ($475) is overkill? The other options are GTX 570 2.5 MB ($375) GTX 560 2MB ($225)
I've read all the reviews but there are mostly gamers who have more than one card.
Will the GTX 560 2MB be good enough? It's appealing because of the 2GB and the $225. If this could work for the next year few years then the GTX 580 may be down to $200. I just don't have much experience with video processing, how many layers I'll be using, etc. Or are all of these poor choices because they don't have the copper tubing?
When I upgrade I'll add a RAID card. For now I'll just start with the 6 Samsung and use a few for backups as I go along. Maybe I'll need to order more or another external back up sooner than later. Hope that makes sense. My approach is to get started then upgrade. I don't need to win any bench mark test but want a computer that's reasonably fast, upgradeable, reliable and have a long life.
Oh yeah, I had no idea about the keyboard and mouse so just went with a wired one as it will be on a desktop.
So does this look like a well balanced approach? Does anything look excessive or insufficiant?
Thanks for bearing with me. This forum has been a great resource! Of couse you recognize the parts from other recent builds. I've been doing a lot of reseach and really looking forward to getting this together.
    thanks again!
    John C

Yes, Frederic, some of the parts should look familiar! Your approach was really interesting how you were concerned about cooling and air flow. I actually had ordered most of it, including the MB, kayboard and mouse, last Thursday, then decided to go with the same case instead of the Half X and the CPU cooler, so I'm really glad you posted your system when you did.
Really appreciate the feed back. As far as what codec I'll be using, I suppose the ones that are the most versatile and most often used. I would like it to be capable to handle professional work standards yet not overkill. Do most editors use native and a codec for ACHDV? I was planning on the AVID codec and probably the CinaForm. A week ago I was put off by spending $100 for a codec but now that I'm configuring the hardware that might be a good option. I just don't know how to put all this into perspective until I get a real idea of the work flow; if it will save minutes or hours off the edit time.
I was confused about the disk performance. Thanks a bunch for pointing that out. I must have misunderstood some of the post, as I was under the impression that the SATA II disk 3.0 32 mb exceeded the throughput of the SATA connection, however you are saying that’s not the case with a RAID card, and that the RAID card with a decent disk set up would be best approach to improve the performance as opposed to more VRAM on the video card.
I am planning a good raid configuration in the near future so will get the SATA III. It's nice to be able to upgrade like that. I also want a good RAID card and the RAID will be also for redundancy. I may even have to go with a 10000 RPM primary drive like yours as those appear to be a nice boost. I planned to start off with 4 disk set up with a few disk for backups and ordered 6 disk. I was going to look into that next and didn't even realize the SATA III was on the MB. I'll probably be shooting a lot just to learn how to process the video, and once I start processing quality video I'll upgrade the RAID and backup.
Ok, off to see if I can cancel the Samsung order, gotta love Amazon for that.
Have a great day and thanks again!

  • Installer build spec loses spec for exe to run after

I don't know why, but now & then the build spec for my application installer loses the setting in the Advanced tab to run a certain .exe after installing. The .exe to run after installing is created by a build spec in the same project (from LV source). Besides rebuilding that .exe (without changing the .exe's build spec, name, or location, just minor source code mods), nothing has changed in the project, but the installer's Advanced setting will suddenly be gone. What the heck?!
My project & source files are too large to attach.

    Hi Meg,
I noticed this forum post and figured I would chime in here as well.
We have been working on this issue and are hoping to isolate the exact steps that cause the sporadic loss of the postbuild EXE setting. An initial suspicion was the EXE being moved or rebuilt to a different location. That being said, if anyone has run into this issue in the past and has any insight it would be appreciated, as this problem has not been consistently reproduced.
    Thanks,

  • PSE 8.0 (Mac) Trial Version, no selection for Slideshow.

I select photos in Bridge then click on Create, there appears to be selections for Web Photo Gallery and for PDF Slideshow but no selection for plain ordinary Slideshow. Did Adobe eliminate the plain jane Slideshow from this version?
    Regards,
    Bob

Thanks Barbara, I will go to the Hands On Training Room at the Green Valley Camera Club and use one of the Vista machines to build my lesson plan. Hopefully that version will have a basic Slideshow selection. When I saw the new PSE Version 8.0 for the Mac I thought it would be the one to use to teach the new class next week, so I installed the Trial version.
Our club is very active and has just installed PSE ver 8.0 on all six of the Vista machines and the instructors console. In case you want to have a look at us, our web site is: www.gvcameraclub.org
Our membership oscillates between 1,000 and 1,200 members. Right now we have 120 signed up for our 10-week Photography Basics Course.
Thank you again for your prompt reply,

    Hi All,

When I do insert statement on view XY it is working fine from sql but when i used same thing with page process of " Process Row of XY Automatic Row Processing (DML) " i am getting following error. I am using APEX 3.0 . Please help me.
ORA-20001: Error in DML: p_rowid=xxxx, p_alt_rowid=abc, p_rowid2=, p_alt_rowid2=. ORA-02014: cannot select FOR UPDATE from view with DISTINCT, GROUP BY, etc.
    Thanks

    James,
are you already on 3.0.1.00.07 or 3.0.1.00.08? Have a look at the release notes, it says something about a bug fix for some occurrences of ORA-02014.
Also have a look at the new substitution value/item FSP_DML_LOCK_ROW which turns locking off if you set it to FALSE. See http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/3.0.1_readme.html#CHDIDIAF and also http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32472_01/doc/appdev.300/b32471/advnc.htm#BCGFDAIJ

  • How to SELECT FOR UPDATE with CMP (Oracle)

The most common database (Oracle) by default uses a scheme that does not fit into any of those isolation levels. A SELECT statement selects data at the start of the transactions, whereas a SELECT ... FOR UPDATE does something quite different. It is essential to do SELECT FOR UPDATEs before updating the row as SELECT does no lock. It's a hack that works well in practice.
    1. Which isolation level is this?
    2. More fundamentally, how an earth is it possible to use this scheme with CMP?! You would have to distinguish load() from loadForUpdate()! Is CMP inconsistent with Oracle?
This is a pretty big whole in the CMP spec!

    No. thats no goes well.
Transaction serializable in Oracle uses a optimistic
concurrency system. And for update is a
    pessimistic concurrency.
With optimistic: the system is faster but it can fail
With pessimistic: if doesnt fail (usually;)
You can solve the proble with many differents systems:
    1. Edit the .xml descriptor files ans change the sql sentences.
    And my prefer one.
    2. Make a new jdbc driver that inherits from the original
    oracledriver.
The new driver give u in "getConnection()" a new connection class that inherits from the original connection.
The executestatement and preparestatement adds the
string "for update" if the stattement was starting by select.
Configure your container to use the new driver.
