New (old) Keyboard Problems

So, I just got a use keyboard from an old blue imac and I decided to plug it into my new iMac G5 intel, because I like it more, and everything is fine except for the volume buttons which don't exist on this new keyboard. What I need to do is reconfigure those two buttons to be on like F2 and F3 or something. Can anyone help?
Thanks for listening,
Daniel Lizardo

  • New Apple Keyboard Problems

I am not able to use the Dashboard and Exposé buttons on the new Apple Keyboard. I cannot assign them in the preferences nor were they set up initially. I have installed the latest keyboard update (Version 1.1) but it still does not work.
My Setup: An ACD 20" is attached to the PowerBook. The lid is closed.

Alright! I finally got my NEW aluminum keyboard from my local Apple Store (I made sure to call in before going... not that it's a journey to get there, but don't want to waste time if they don't have it) and just installed it with my PowerMac G4 Dual FW 800 model.
I'm typing on it right now instead of my PowerBook.
ALL functions are working for me. What I did was to install the keyboard FIRST by plugging it in to the computer's USB port.
Then I went to Apple's download/support site to get the keyboard update software 1.1...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html
...and then restarted my PowerMac. Voila! (It didn't work. It was connected to a USB 2.0 PCI card, so I unplugged it from there to the built-in USB 1.1 port on the PowerMac and then it worked. I put it back to the USB 2.0 card's ports and it worked after that).
F1 and F2 don't work for brightness and contrast modes because I am now using an Envision 17" LCD dual monitor setup (my 17" Studio Display is being used by an older PowerMac G4 533 MHz). I think if it was an Apple LCD display--Studio (plastic) or Cinema (aluminum) versions--it would recognize it. The F3 for Expose and F4 for Dashboard work fine. I haven't tried the DVD player controls for F7 through F9. F10 through F12 work great for sound, even if I have non-Apple external speakers. (Makes me wonder about the monitor controls). Eject key works too. And the REAL eject key, not the F12 hold key down to eject.
So, I'm sorry that you're all having problems. I'd connect it to my PowerBook, but because I'm a very meticulous and exacting person, I don't want to disconnect anything because I have it setup where the wires are hidden and it's all perfect right now.
But as I said in an earlier posting, when I went down to my Apple Store and tried the new keyboards out that were connected to the NEW iMacs, those keyboard functions didn't work!! Irony, huh?
Mine purrs like a Leopard... aha!!
(I love the quiet sound and less exacting pressure needed to type as opposed to my previous black Apple Pro Keyboard. I would never have bought this new flat aluminum keyboard if it didn't match my Envision silver monitors).
By the way, I have a Mighty Mouse (wired version) connected to it too. And yes, the aluminum keyboard I bought was the wired version as well.

$49 well spent!! I don't like the wireless version. Looks kind of odd shaped with the extra space on top (for the batteries). They didn't have those in stock anyway.

Also, I haven't touched anything in System Preferences. Everything worked after FIRST, connect the keyboard, SECOND, install the software update, THIRD, restart (had to unplug it from PCI USB 2.0 slot to USB 1.1 native port, and then back to USB 2.0 port), and after login, all worked without a hitch.
I don't even want to fool around with system prefs now, since maybe that's what causes the problem (no proof there from me) when you try and tweak or customize your settings.

  • FREAKY new Y2P keyboard problem...

This has happened to me 3 times since I picked up my (now 3rd) Y2P.  I will be typing away with the backlit keys on.  Suddenly the keys will go dark and the keyboard no longer responds.  It stays like this for about 15 seconds then the light comes back on and it works again.
    How weird is that?
    Anyone else?

Thanks, will consider that if the problem persists.  Have now gone a day where it has not happened once.  Really strange.  It's kind of like the fan grinding and revving I had a few days ago.  Lasted for about 3 hours then never again.
So odd.  Funny little problems that seem to just come and go.
Come to think of it, there may be a connection.  This was only happening when I was running my Y2P at non-optimal resolutions, either 1920 x 1080 or 2048 x 1152.  Once I went back to 3200 x 1800 no issue of either kind.  Maybe when they warn you those other resolutions are "non-optimal" they really mean it?

  • Problems with new alum keyboard and orig acrylic keyboard on eMac

    Hi ,
    I need help , pls.
I just got an alum keyboard to use w/ my eMac.
    I've upgraded software as instructed.
My numbers pad do not work.
ALso using a logitech wireless/laser opt. mouse. I had to download logitech's software ( never had to do this before ).
Being that I'm so used to the numb pad and wireless, I can't do any type of work w/o accidentally using the numbers pad.
In doing so, it freezes up. At one point I had all hardwired to the eMac ( new & old keyboard and mice ). The wireless mouse would have to be reinstalled after the machine would go to sleep and when I'd log out as a user.
I've tried to use systm. pref. and used "set keyboard to default". Using the flag (US and NOT extended ).
It's been a pain for the last few days. I went back and am now using my orig. acrylic /plastic keyboard that came w/ my eMac. Now this keyboard's num pad is not functioning anymore either.
    Now..what I've done so far....
I've deleted the "dmg " file from the updated alum keyboard, and trashed all logitech's software.
I even ran applejack ( yes, I'm desperate so I did it.) I have a big workload ahead of me.
My old keyboard and logitech mouse is working except for the numbers pad.
What must I do ? Or what else can I do ?
I've called support and all the say is take the new keyboard to the store.
No one at apple support or has helped. "May be a batch of unsuitable keyboards".
I understand the part where you must use some things for the keyboard w/ an alum. iMac.
But those things i.e iPod, hub are not being used via alum keyboard's 2 ports , so I know that's not an issue.
My mouse ( not a mighty mouse ) and the logitech and old keyboard are hard wired to the eMac (machine's usb ports ) itself.
I need some help pls. Can someone pls. respond here or let me know of any similar problems and solutions you've made.
    Thanks in advance.

Whenever new software is installed it is wise to run Disk Utility and to Repair Permissions. If you haven't done this try it and see whether there's any difference.
If you haven't tried yet plug the keyboard into a different usb port. If it works there it's possible that the other usb port is faulty.
My guess is that there's a software problem. So...
Try downloading the 10.4.11 combo update and installing this. You can do this 'over the top' of what's already there. Many users have found this resolves system software issues. You may need to re-apply other software updates released after this one. You can check Software Update to see which updates are necessary if any.

  • HT201178 I have a Mac mini with Magic Trackpad and wireless keyboard. The keyboard and track pad got wet so I have purchased new ones. Problem is how do I get past the log in screen to set up the pairing of the devices? The old ones do not work

How do I get past the login screen to pair my new wireless keyboard and trackpad when the old ones are water damaged and don't work

Have you tried pulling the batteries out of the damaged ones so that they are completely off; then shutdown your Mac Mini via the power button on the back right. Turn on your new keyboard and trackpad then power your Mini back up? The auto detection should find your new keyboard and trackpad.

  • HT4623 I down loaded ios 7 to my wifes ipad 2  but because of the streamlined look my wife can bearly see the letters and numbers on the key board because of an eyesight problem  She had no problem with the old keyboard.  Is there a way to make the letter

I downloaded ios 7 to my wifes ipad 2.  The only problem was, with the new system the letters and numbers on the keyboard became so streamlined that my wife had trouble seeing them because of a eye problem.  Is there a way to get the old keyboard back and if not how do you uninstall ios 7?

I had thought this situation was solved but it just got worse. In addition to being without service for several days I am now being charged  a cancellation fee for a broadband service that BT disconnected in error. BT Vision was also terminated by BT but the set up charges are still in place. Does anyone know who the relevant Ombudsman is? I called BT from America on Friday - for an hour - while someone called Aruj sorted out why there is an order 'in progress' that I didn't initiate; why I have fees relating to a problem created by BT and why there are references to a house move that didn't take place and a BT Vision service I no longer have but didn't cancel myself. He assured me it would be rectified and my bill would be reduced by 139 pounds and we would get confirmation of this later that day. I asked him what chance there was that this would not actually happen - he said no chance at all; my new bill would be 23.50.
There was no text message. An online chat person today told me there had been a fee reduction request which had been declined and there was nothing else he could help me with as he dealt only with broadband. But he would get BT Vision to email me. They always seem so helpful.............
I'm sure I'm listed somewhere as 'a problem', there's no other explanation for why I get the runaround

  • Problem with a new aluminum keyboard

I just bought an aluminum keyboard but when i press, for example, the sound buttons my dashboard appears rather than changing the sound. How do i get the buttons working?

I have exactly the same problem. I just replaced my old Aluninium Apple wireless keyboard that got damaged. I am running OS10.5.8 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I just unboxed my new French wireless keyboard that I ordered form the Apple online store, and can use the sound buttons! I get the dashboard or the old F3 key instead.
DMarsh thanks for your tip, the box is unticked, but the F keys are still scrabbled. My old Apple wireless English keyboard is working fine (3 batteries).
I think that the new keyboards are not fully compatible with 10.5. Is snow leopard ok?.
Lion seems to have new functionalities. I understand the need to update the hardware accordingly, but I am not very happy as it is not clearly mentioned that the new wireless keyboard does not properly work with the previous systems!!!! Come on Apple the sound keys should at least work.
I looked on here and could not find any sofware update. I presume that they expect us to upgrade to Lion.
I get back to apple store tomorrow to get a refund or get an old model shipped.

  • Function keys on new wired keyboard for old iMac don't workdon't work

Apple replaced my original wired keyboard when keys had stopped working, but with the new wired keyboard the function keys don't work as the symbols on them indicate.  My concern is F10-F12 which are supposed to control volume.  F10 shows all open windows; F11 romoves open windowns from screen; F12 shows ttime, date, temperature, etc, like the top button on the mouse.  I have tried suggested ways to fix this through System Preferences, Keyboard/Mouse but none works.
Can anyone solve this problem for me?

I have the exact same problem.  My old keyboard unfortunately died after spilling fluid onto it.
I purchased the same keyboard today.
Everything works with it except I have the same problem as described here:  "

  • I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out".  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

I have copied my iTunes library onto a new computer, but when I play back the songs using the new computer, there seems to be random "miss" or "drop out" during play back, similar to a small scratch on a vinyl record.  Although when I play the same song over again, the "miss" occurs in a different location during the song.  No probs with old computer, just the new one.  I'm onto my third new computer - same problem.  Any suggestions please?

You don't say which version of iTunes you are using, but the symptoms you describe have been encountered by some users with the 64-bit version of iTunes 12.1.
There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77 - including problems with Bluetooth speakers where either sound is degraded or completely absent.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio (one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8).  It may also be necessary to ensure that your Bluetooth speakers are active and selected as the default audio device before you run iTunes.
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • I have problem setting up a new wireless keyboard and my new Mac mini

I have problem setting up a new wireless keyboard and my new Mac mini

Same with my new mac mini.
Got it brand new via the online shop.
Happy to start with the new mac i really got dissapointed by the fact that it`s impossible to pair the wireless keyboard unless you first connect a USB keyboard to the mac mini and start the configuration.
    THIS S.U.C.K.S. !!!
No hint at all from apple that you first have to connect the USB keyboard.
I had to borrowed a USB keyboard from my neighbour :-((
After setting things up it was no problem at all to establish the BT connection with the keyboard.
    Works fine now.

  • I have a problem with my motherboard and my battery of my 2010 macbook pro 13". It was just serviced with a new screen, keyboard, and logic board.

I have a problem with my motherboard and my battery of my 2010 macbook pro 13". It was just serviced with a new screen, keyboard, and logic board. How much will a new battery and motherboard cost and would it be worth it or should I just get a new computer. It was about 300 dollars to get it serviced last week. if it adds up to much past 600 dollars I will just get a new one. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!
P.S During classes today it began beeping in my bag. Like three kind of long steady beeps then a short pause, and when I opened it I couldn't see anything but it was on so I turned it off and back on.

Depends on what options your Apple store offers - if they can do a depot repair (where they send it out), that's around $300 for all parts & labor.
If the store doesn't have that option, a logicboard is around $600, battery $80-$100, from what I've seen.
If they JUST replaced the logicboard, you absolutely should NOT have to pay for another replacement - the replacement is covered by a warranty. If they want you to pay for it, make sure you have a copy of the receipt for the work that was recently completed so you can show it to them. They have no reason to charge you for another logicboard.

  • New keyboard - old keyboard

After having seen the MacBook Air, I've waited - like probably a lot of us - for a revision of the MBP , with multitouch trackpad and probably other improvements. And there it is - with a Penryn CPU, more VRAM, bigger HD and cheaper price at least in Europe - thanks Apple.
Was about to make a purchase until I spotted - what I first thought would be an outdated picture on Apple's website- the MBP is the last and only product in Apples lineup, that is not equipped with the new keyboard.
So I've wandered, whether the new keyboard is reserved for the consumer line of Apple products and the unaltered MBP keyboard is the superior keyboard for the pro line, or whether the MBP keyboard is currently in a transition period and we will see MBP's with the new keyboard within the next weeks/months.
Went to an Apple Store and tried both keyboards side by side. The new keyboard indeed feels more firm and responsive and with the spacing between the keys it looks more tidy.
    So I'm waiting again .... ;-/
Any comments from people using both types of keyboards frequently?
    Peter

Greetings, Peter! This is probably one of those "personal preferences" subjects. I know that I prefer the "old-style" MBP keyboard. I tried a MacBook Air out for a while and found the "new-style" keyboard to be uncomfortable in my typing style and indeed I really, really did not like the black keys. Unlike many posters, I did not feel the responsiveness and quality in this new keyboard as I do/have in my MBP. Hence, I was so thankful when I saw that Apple did not install the new-style keyboard in the upgraded MBPs! I am indeed awaiting my new 2.6 17" MBP as we speak!

  • Purchased new wirless keyboard, as old one has broken. will not pair.

My old wirless keyboard has broken, key was stuck, have tried to air out and possible dirt etc, however does not work, as a key is stuck i am unable to enter my password on my imac when i turn it on.
so i decided to purchase a new keyboard as the old one is out of warranty
i cant seem to be able to pair it.
the userguide is telling me to pair a new keyboard u need go select 'bluetooth optiona' on the imac, however i cant do that, as i cant get into the imac as the old keyboard is broken?

Most wired keyboards will work with your Mac.  So your best bet is to borrow one and use it to set up the new Bluetooth board.

  • Anyone NOT having Keyboard problems with newer MBP!

After reading about all the keyboard problems on the newer MBPs, is there anyone NOT having keyboard lockups or dropping letter problems? Looking to purchase a MBP soon but after reading about the many keyboard problems I will probably postpone or decide to get a different machine.

There might be a couple of things to try. You could borrow an external keyboard to use for a while--or even buy a cheap one used, and see if you still have problems or not. If you don't, there's likely a problem with the MBP keyboard itself.
Also, if you have access to an Apple Store, you might be able to make an appointment with the genius bar and get a definite diagnosis. It may be possible to arrange to get in a replacement keyboard at the Apple Store and have them fix it while you wait. Don't know for sure if that would be possible, but it's worth asking. Same with an Apple authorized repair shop--it might be possible to get it fixed without having to send it off.
    Good luck!

  • I had a belkin keyboard for my old iPad.  I have upgraded to an iPad air.  Can I get a new case that will allow be to use my old keyboard?  How?

I had a belkin keyboard for my old iPad.  I have upgraded to an iPad air.  Can I get a new case that will allow me to use my old keyboard?  How?  Where?

You might look for generic cases. They're not as sturdy or durable as custom made ones - they tend to use elastic to hold in the iPad and keyboards - but that elastic does give them some flexibility.
Or see if Belkin has anything.
Or you may simply be out of luck with the compatibility. My Keyboard is in a case custom built for my 2 and I know whatever tablet I replace my iPad with I'll be getting a new keyboard as well because it most likely won't fit in a new case.
