New Oracle ACE in the forum - Joel Kallman

Hello,
Joel received a new icon to his name. A well deserved recognition, for a long period of great services to both Oracle and the community, especially the APEX one. I read in one of Tom Kyte's blogs that Joel is the one to "blame" for the idea to develop "ask tom" on the APEX (probably HTML DB back then) platform, as a feasibility test to the new tool, and the success of this project probably lead to the great tool we have today.
I think Joel participation in this forum is also a great indication of his commitment to APEX and its users, and I'm very happy to congratulate him on his new title.
All the best,
Arie.

Thank you both very much. No one is more mystified
about this than me.
JoelI thought that little icon had changed recently. Congratulations Joel! And thanks for all the helpful replies you contribute to this forum. The recognition is well deserved.

  • How to install a new oracle 9i  in the same server where a 8i is installed

Hello and sorry for been an inexperience dba.
Now I need to install 9i oracle version in the same server (solaris os-5.9) where is previously installed a 8i. I'm reading the installation guide and I know that I have to make two different oracle home, and then two different owners .
My problem is when I've seen the kernel parameters and their permissions and of course all of them have the owner the old oracle user.
Do you know if I have to change some of this parameters?
How to do that, and where can I find some guide to follow ?
    thanks in advance

and then two different owners .Not necessarily, you can use the same OS user, of course on a different Oracle Home.

  • To all  Oracle ACE Member and others

Hi there Oracle ACE Member and forum members.
I have need an answer to the real question of the moment.
What is the best technology in the chapter of performance?
    - Toplink
    - Business Components
What are the advantages of each technology and which are u using and why?
    Thanks

You cant say one is more performant than the other - you can write fast/slow applications in each. The choice is down to, not performance, but other features like development experience, expectations, development styles.
Shay does a nice summary in his blog so instead of repeating I'll just point you to here

  • The forum police in action...

Instead of doing something about the lack of functionality on these forums (like a link at the bottom of a page to return to discussions, correct the misalignment of 'Return to original message', which is often placed a random positions in text, etc.) the Forum Police is removing messages after three months and informing you of abuse.
I've had this happen to me after posting "From the looks of it, you aren't either". This posting was removed after having been reported as abuse a full three months after posting this. It has been on display for over three months. I wonder whether the police here have any idea what they are doing and what it will entail. If this is the result of new Police regulations, maybe the forum etiquette rules need some sharpening.
Let the Forum Police be ready for more postings about abuse if they want that, it'll keep them busy, if they really want nit-picking. It looks like 911 needs an overhaul.

Yes John, I recall that thread. Jeff even chimed-in and commented. I will admit that I may have dragged things slightly off-topic, but the OP had gotten the correct info from one of us already. I picked up on someone's side-comment and replied to that. You substantiated my comment, and you got the "pink slip," until Jeff calmed things down for the person, who reported us for "Abuse."
This is in comment to your replies, and also to Harm's reply to this message:
Lately, I've been getting a lot of guff on a couple of the fora. Usually the situation goes this way:
OP - poorly stated, or lack of details for their problem
Me - Ask for specific info and then list some possibilities to research in the meantime. Usually, these are Assets, Project, or system related.
OP - "Hey, it's not my system, my Project or my Assets. If you don't know the answer, then get the F___ off my thread!"
There have probably been 4-6 of these in the last month. This spans Encore, PrPro (all flavors) and PrElements. Have not spent my usual time on the PS forum, as everything I've seen has been answered 1000 times already. Makes you feel really good for trying to help the blokes.
Now, Harm and I have totally different styles, yet we both get similar "abuse" from the OP's, and at about the same frequency. Don't know if it's the phases of the Moon, the world economy, or that schools are getting out. Something must be "in the water." Still, I do not think that anyone on this thread, so far, has ever considered reporting these folk, and I doubt that any of us would. That is not the "style" of any of us.
Yes, the button, to which JerryK alludes, is a new "feature," and in some circles, I think that IT is being abused.
As an aside, I hope that their pirated version of Adobe _____ eats their entire system and nothing can ever be recovered, not even with a low-level format!
Can't believe that I said that, but I'm becoming a bit "frustrated" myself. Maybe we should just ask Adobe to shut down the fora and only some (of us) could just use the Lounge - so long as Jeff restocks the yoodles and Rolling Rock...
You all make some good points, and I apologize for venting so darned much.

  • Welcome to the new Oracle User Group Community

Welcome to the new Oracle User Group Community. Whether you landed here via the redirect from the previous community site - IOUC.org - or navigated here directly, welcome. This new platform brings new community features to enhance the way you connect with user group peers and with Oracle, as well as make it easier for you to find information through a more intuitive interface. We invite you to provide your feedback on the new site. Log in using your OTN Forum credentials and join the discussion here. If you do not yet have OTN Forum log in credentials, navigate to http://community.oracle.com/community, click on the "Register" link in the upper right corner of the page and create your account.
We look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Kashif,
Glad you like the new Community. Communication among user group leaders works a little differently on this site than on the previous site. Rather than having communication focus around e-mail distribution lists, communication now is focused within the site itself. The intent is that this will provide users the one place to come for information, rather than having to sort through lots of e-mail threads. That doesn't mean that e-mail is completely out of the picture though. Users can opt-in to receive e-mail notifications when an individual piece of content is changed, or when content is posted to a space. Look for the "Receive email notifications" link under "Actions" to start receiving notices. To stop receiving notices, go back to the same content/space and click "Stop email notifications".
Your Relationship Manager will be talking with you and the other leaders in your region over the next few days and weeks regarding how you and your group of leaders want to communicate.
    Best regards,
    Oracle User Group Team

    Bonjour "Etudiant from Tunisia",
I'm not sure what you mean with "please give me the user/password".
As far as I know there is no online OWB available where you could try out the product (if that is what you mean).
If you would like to learn more about OWB, read online documentation or for instance the link that is provided in an earlier post in this thread.
Otherwise simply install OWB and try it yourself. The Installation and Configuration Guide is clear enough even without much experience installing Oracle software, and the OWB User Guide provides some basic insight on working with OWB itself.
    Good luck, Patrick
ps If people are still expecting what Igor mentioned when he started this forum ("Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) product management and development will monitor the discussion forum on regular basis"), don't count on it; fortunately the product itself has been around long enough now, there are quite some users that can share usable insights and/or drop some useful lines on the new threads... ;-)

  • Problems with the forums -- Oracle personnel please escalate

I'm sure many have posted this somewhere, but in case they haven't -- the forums aren't rendering code snippets, which looks like xml, properly. In some cases, its eliminating them altogether, in others, it cuts out big chunks, in others it replaces some xml markup with smilies. The result is that its rendering tons of posts and information in them as totally useless.
If I had to guess, this is because the forums aren't rendering using rawText or something like this, but at the very least, until the problem can be totally fixed, turn off smilies. Smilies are nice, but next to code which document answers, they are unimportant.
    Thanks,
    B

    Shay,
"We did report it to the people in charge, and they asked that feedback will be posted on the feedback forum."
I understand your personal plight, and I thank you for passing on the information as you were told. But what I'm talking about is kind of big-picture stuff, pertaining to Oracle as a whole. It encompasses not only the issue of the new forums, but support of any product, be it on forums or metalink, documentation, examples, etc. The frustration coming out that I see seems to have a central theme: Oracle having a "fend for yourself" mentality to their customers.
Someone posts on the forums, can't get an answer, so they are told "these are for user communication". Then they are told "go post a tar". Then they post a tar and are sent a document they've already read. Then others have said that tars won't address how-tos. Then the JDev forums have problems, and users give feedback, and the response is "go post this somewhere else.".
This looks like continually passing the buck, propagating an internal bureaucracy to for users to have to understand how to navigate, and forcing upon your users the responsibility for facilitating communication within Oracle. I think Oracle really needs to work on putting themselves in the shoes of their customers, and change the self-centric attitude. I highly doubt that Oracle treats their customers with respect to accounts receivable with the same apparent lethargy they treat customers with respect to support.

  • I have the new Oracle 8i installer and here is why

I have been trying to get Oracle 8i on Linux and I feel that I
    must share
my thoughts on the new Oracle installer with everybody.
I hate the new installer. I used to run the installer from
    home over my
128Kbps connection while I was connected to the office machines,
    because it
was simple text based. And Oracle 8i has changed all that!
I have nothing against GUI based installers, only when they have
    a little too
many animated images that eat up bandwidth. I had to drive all
    the way to
the office because I did not have sufficient bandwidth to display
    the darn
ringing bell animated image. This is strictly the mentality of
    Windows users
who like to work on the console of servers.
    And check this out:
line 118 in my install log file at :
    /usr/local/oracle/u01/app/oracle/oraInventory/logs/installActions.log
    says :
    platGroup = WINDOWS
And this is on Linux!!! Maybe the Oracle folks are forgetting
    that Linux
users are a little too sensitive to these kind of mistakes. :)
This also supports my theory that the new installer is a gift
    from Windows
programmers. Who are not too familiar with the idea of being
    able to send
their video display to any computer around the world and work
    from there.
A feature every Linux user takes for granted
There are numerous other bugs in the installer and other routines
    of Oracle
8i for Linux. Some of them I will list here:
    2. The installation types screen list 3 options:
    Typical, Minimal and Custom.
Somehow Minimal takes more disk space (642 MB) compared to
    Typical (585 MB).
Well that is what the installation screen says. I have not tried
    to install
    using the minimal install.
    3. The installation cant figure out how much free space is
    available on the /
partition. Is it that hard? Its gives warnings about how I may
    not have
    enough space.
    4. dbassist cant find the cdrom if you try to install the default
    database
from CDROM. It says cannot find CDROM even if you have all your
    stuff under
    /mnt/cdrom
    5. The docs talk about software mount points and data mount
    points /u01 /u02
/u03 and /u04 that I created, but I could not find anywhere to
    specify them
like I was able to, with the last release.
    6. "Oracle Protocol Support" section during the install shows no
    options at
all. What happened to good ole Net8?
And many others. This product is a joke.

My sentiments exactly. There are so many bugs in the
installation of this release that I have just about given up.
And I haven't even started testing the new features yet!
I've tried the install on RedHat 6.0 straight out of the box (no
patches or updates applied) and followed the OIG and release
notes to the letter. Clearly, no one at Oracle did the same,
because there are many problems during install. I finally got a
simple database running, but there are some real gotcha's along
    the way.
Here are just a few of the bugs I've encountered:
    1. Zero length library file $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libnjni8.so.
Netasst doesn't work without it. Someone said they posted the
source code to the comp.databases.oracle.server newsgroup, but I
    can't find it.
    2. Database Creation Assistant thinks dbmssql.sql is called
    dbmssml.sql.
    3. Building the Intelligent Agent with TCL 7.5 causes a cascade
of undefined references when running gmake -f ins_oemagent.mk
    agent
    4. Database Creation Assistant doesn't understand OFA. It wants
to put all of the database files /u01/app/oracle/oradata/<sid> !
    5. Database Creation Assistant will sometimes prevent editing
the data file names to put them in OFA compliant directories.
I am appreciative of the free developer licenses for so many
Oracle products, but this is the worst Oracle install I've had
    in 12 years.
