New OVI Maps - For N97 GPS problems fix

Its Suppose to be the solution to the GPS issues with N97 , honestly i didn't try it yet
my 1st choice was to uninstall the old maps & get back to maps 2.0 hopefully it well work this time
heres the link http://betalabs.nokia.com/ovi-maps

i have the latest maps installed 3.3. b07 and it seems to work fairly well which i could not have said about any prior release. 3.1 was a complete disaster in my case. give this new one a go and see how it works for you. i am for a moment impressed. it has not crashed my phone and actually seems to work, imagine that !!!

What is the procedure? I need to reformat it reflash it? throw it in the trash?

boot it up in the off line mode, without sim and see if it helps
sorry let me ask something else, you get the while screen or nothing if you get nothing then you might want to read up on these suggestions

  • N97 GPS Problems - Hardware or Software?

Sorry to start yet another thread on the N97 GPS problems, but reading through all the threads there seems not to be any clear conclusion as to whether or not the issue is a software/firmware one, in which case potentially fixable, or a hardware one, in which case the phones have to be sent back and replaced.
My personally feeling is that it's hardware.  Some people have no issue but many have a problem.   I have the same issues with losing the satellites, poor GPS accuracy, etc. both with Ovi Maps 3.01 and with Google Maps, which again to me points to a hardware fault.  Updating firmware from v10 to v11 made no difference to GPS performance.
So, I wonder if people agree with me that it is a hardware issue and the phones have to go back, or if there is some hope of it being a software issue and thus being fixed?
Anyone had any success in sending back an N97 for replacement because if the GPS issue? Mine is a UK 3 branded N97 black, free as part of a contract, and I have a feeling that 3 are likely to resist replacing the phone if they can.
    Mark

I believe that the GPS problem in N97 not a hardware problem but a software problem with the Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.
    Below explanation why:
I have been using Nokia Maps 2.0 on my previous phone – E71 for more than one year. It worked pretty well and stable. One important remark – it is important to configure the server for AGPS under Settings well...
About one and half month ago I decided to install on my E71 the newest Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.0. And ... immediately my problems started. The GPS performance worsened – I was continuously getting messages about GPS lost, recalculating and usually concluding that I am on a parallel road to the road which I was actually driving – horrible...
Also my colleague with N82 made the same mistake (installed Maps 3.0) and got the same problems.
Because of this problems I have removed this new version on my E71 and went back to Nokia Maps 2.0. And guess what? - The problems were gone!
Two weeks ago I bought my N97. It comes only with Maps 3.1 so I was expecting problems. And ... indeed I have them all. Bad thing is however that I cannot go back to Maps 2.0 on N97...
I tested GPS accuracy with three different phones (N97, E71, E75) and two versions of Nokia Maps. What I can see is that its normal to be about 80-100 meters on average. This is not a specific N97 issue! And apparently should not be a problem because Nokia Maps 2.0 works great even if this application shows accuracy of 100 m. Probably thanks to the Assisted GPS.
So my conclusion is that it is not a hardware problem but a problem with (a part of) the software of the Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.x ! Maybe with a GPS Driver? Or the functionality of the assisted GPS?

This feature is certainly present in latest version of OVI Maps from Nokia Beta Labs:http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-06-check-in-update
Whereas previously only contents of folder could be removed, now "collection" can be deleted.

  • Cannot download 3.06 ovi maps for 5800XM after har...

Cannot download 3.06 ovi maps for 5800XM after hard reset. Any clue what's going on?

Similar problem on my E71 phone after upgrading the firmware to 300.21.012
I.e., when I start the application - it closes in a half way. Uninstalling is impossible.
When I start Nokia Maps updater - it says:
"Error. Cannot update licenses. Missing phone info: IMSI or IMEI cannot be obtained (20)."
    Possible reason:
I've used Nokia Maps - Ovi beta before  updating  firmware to 300.21.012. After firmware update, I've updated Nokia Maps successfully with Nokia Maps Loader from the computer under Windows XP. But later I've restored phone info from backup, from another computer which is runing on Windows Vista. After restoring backup - I see my messages, etc., but Maps don't work at all (as written above).
Connecting through another computer (which runs under Windows Vista) - it says: "There are no new updates for your phone! Manage your maps and voices with Map Loader". But when I start Map loader - it looks as previous version loader; and allows only load voices, not maps. And still I can not start Maps in my E71 phone.
So how can I start using Nokia Maps again?

  • E55 - NEW OVI MAPS - A LOT OF BUGS!

I have just installed the new OVI MAPS.. but it was better the old version
The usefull internal compass don't work!!!!! why?
Where could I set the AGPS option on/off?
I want back the the ovi maps 3.0 version!

Curious, I have not observed many of the issues you indicate.
    0. Haven't had issues, but haven't really paid attention either.
    1. This works very nicely for me. Switches to known WiFi when available and automatically uses 3G when not.
    2. Have not observed.
    3. Lots of apps are missing or don't work on S^3 - terrible shame.
    4. It's a **bleep** app so don't worry about it. Half-baked junk, IMO.
    5. Yep, it's bad.
    6. No problem for me here. Entered Ovi credentials when phone first started up and haven't had to do it anywhere else or ever again.
    7. Try Windows Media Player for sync. As for other issues, have not observed any of them.
    Have not tried the rest.

    Hi nenad87
Unfortunately Macedonia still classed as non-navigable country due to paucity of data available:

  • Hate New Ovi maps

When I bought my Nokia Navigator, the maps were wonderful. I was recently prompted to update maps, and I did. Big mistake.
The old version, I could specify countries and cities. Now it doesn't so it's normal to be directed to places like Iraq.
Also in the old maps; if when wasnt sure of the spelling, you could type the first few letters and the list would populate itself. No more. Now you either have the right spelling or you don't go anywhere. This feature was important as in Countries where they dont use the English Alphapet, the spelling varies. So one usually put the first few letters, and it would give you a hint. No more.
Is there a way to get the old maps?

The url links to Ovi Maps for Facebook showing a map view of your location. Its not exactly a self advertisement.
As for saying "via Ovi by Nokia", its common for most apps. Its pretty common to see Facebook status updates with embedded signatures like "via Tweetdeck for Android/iPad/iPhone", "Friendly via iPad", etc.

  • Suggestion for new OVI Maps feature: Friend(s)

    Hi!
I have a suggestion to make OVI Maps better.
I have seen in computer games teammates/enemies on maps or  radars.
Hence I came up with a very nice idea:
Let's say I'm in a forest picking berries or fishing or just searching my friend.
Now why not have a feature, so that I can "pair" with my friend, so that both of us will have dots on maps, which will show friend(s) location...
The possible utilization could be by bluetooth or/and by network.
The problem I see is, that with bluetooth the connection usually ends about 8-10 meters, especially in forests. The network on the other hand will make data costs go pretty high. I don't know, if you can use phone as a wifi adapter, but that also has pretty limited range and is hence useless.
Now Iets post some ideas about how to implement connection between two (or more) phones. It will be very nice to hear

  • N97 and the new OVI MAPS

N97 sim free (on Orange), version 2.0 software. Updated to OVI maps, the free ones from this site. Installed ok.
When I open the app, it opens fine, then closes by itself after about 10 seconds!
    Any ideas?
I have deleted and re-installed the software, I deleted the CIties file and QF files.
    I am stumped!

Nokia Map Loader is a programme you can download to your computer, then connect phone to computer with usb, you can then download and install all the maps you need to your phone ( the actual maps not the app, this saves your phone having to download them real time, so navigation is quicker and data usage reduced)
And yes, I dowloaded and used the N97 mini version of maps before the N97 (classic) version was available.

  • N97 GPS problem!

There has been already some discussion about GPS but I want to start new one topic-
I would like to know is there any N97 or anybody which N97 GPS is working fine without any problems?
Today I made my first real navigation trip and I saw that my N97 with newest maps and phone sw was useless.
GPS signal is going to lost very often and my position arrow is coming too late for corners and turns. Also speed shows very often 0km/h and sometimes it goes totally grazy when poistion is lost and it's starting to calculate route again and again and it never ends without starting whole navigation from the beginning.
Well when I was returning back to my home today i decided to use my Nokia LD-3W Bluetooth GPS receiver and when I used that and also phone's A-GPS then MAPS  worked very well. None of problems.....
I truly hope that this GPS problem exists on every released N97 at this time because then it would be most propably SW related problem, not HW problem. Of course it can be also HW problem but I do not belive that.
Also some other Nokia phone models have had almost similar problems (with early sw versions) but those has been fixed by phone sw later on. But I must to admit that not so bad that I faced with N97 today.....

I believe it is a hardware problem. I use GPS Data all the time and it never fails that my N95-3 and E71-2 both get a good GPS signal that doesn't fluctuate constantly or randomly go in and out. It doesn't matter what application I'm in either, whether that be Google Maps, or Nokia Maps. The N97 has a diffiicult time finding and keeping hold of a GPS signal. Both of my N97's (first and second) are exactly the same.
The antenna is the problem. There is no doubt in my mind. All the software in the world can't make up for an antenna that can't keep a signal. It can mask the problem to a certain extent, which supposedly Nokia Maps 3.1 does, but it doesn't solve the real issue here which is **bleep** hardware.
Even on days and nights where there are not clouds in the sky, I get the "GPS does not work well indoors" error message while driving around in my car, trying to use the "GPS Data" application. My N95-3 and E71 never tell me that.
Nokia, as much as I like them, screwed this phone up hard, and to be honest, they've been doing it for some time.

I have just bought a new C5 because of its maps and navigation features and am having the horrendous problems trying to download additional maps. The only one it comes with is for central/northern europe. I have tried using OVI suite downloaded onto my PC (Vista). That doesn't work. (Could it be that this automatically loads software for the S60 handset?).
On first using OVI Suite you do have to accept any prompts to accept synchronisation software onto device.
Irrespective of whether you can't get OVI Suite or Nokia Maploader to work you can always download Europe.zip using links in this post by ovikovi here and then decompress:
    /t5/Maps-Navigation-and-GPS/newest-Nokia-Ovi-Maps-0-1-25-114-manual-download/m-p/778870/highlight/tr...
That said it is a lot easier to overwrite E:\Cities\diskcache folders  0 - 9 and a - f using Windows PC as a bit more convoluted if using Mac although requires use of "Terminal" to merge folders.

  • Ovi map on n97

When I got my n97 my map was working, then i had to deleted someof my memory on my c drive but I dont no what I did because now my map doesnt work and need help getting it back online. When I go into it now it say system error but I have the ovi map safeware 3.1..............HELP!

nothing you did all you could just fine. ok try the first code after you take out the battery for about a minute
and see if this helps any also in the c drive go through the file manager and try to remove the cities folder it will self replicate but it might have the old maps data that you dont need and it might be causing an issue
With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
NOTE: In front of the hash key ( #) there is also a STAR key that people often miss and state that the code does not work.
1.. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data) Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345.
2.*#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
    3. hard reset - hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, /GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.
