New PB 17in DDR2 - Remaining Power Fluctuates Wildly

Got one of the new Powerbooks - so far rather satisfied - but one thing I am noticing is that the "remaining battery power" (displayed in hours/minutes) is fluctuating really wildly.
With a full charge I'm seeing 6:27 remaining (wow I never even got over 2hr with my 1st gen Aluminum G4 15in) but then every once in awhile I look and it says 4 hours-something, or 3-hours-something, then one time I looked and it said I had over 9 hours remaining! This is all in the same hour of use. Crazy huh?
I haven't benchmarked it but I'm guessing I'm getting about 3-4 hours out of this battery (and I haven't changed any of my Energy settings since I bought this thing, so it's at the defaults.)
Anyway, I'm curious if anyone else is seeing this type if issue. Seems like in the past Apple has in many instances put out patches for "battery remaining" problems. So maybe this is yet another one of those.

Seems like it doesn't fluctuate as much now, sticks within the 3-4 hour range, which personally after having the 1st gen Aluminum PB, i'm pretty happy with (I only got like an hour out of my first PB). Maybe something in the hardware has to warm up once it's fresh out of the box - this really only happened the first day ...

  • Sensitivity of iMac to power fluctuations, waveform distortions

After months of working fine, my APC UPS BE750G apparently shuts down when there is a line voltage fluctuation or waveform distortion (based on observation during very brief power fluctuations during storms, such as cause lights to dim briefly), and shuts down everything connected to the UPS. In other words, the UPS fails to go into battery backup even though the battery is fully charged.  APC is replacing the UPS under warranty.  I have discussing with APC how I might avoid with the new unit the possibility that local voltage irregularities might have damaged the UPS circuit.  One suggestion they give is:
Use [this UPS] voltage sensitivity setting with equipment [that] is less sensitive to fluctuations in voltage or waveform distortions -- setting status to low.
Has anybody had the problem that an APC UPS that seems to be working fine (all green lights) fails with feeble weather-related line fluctuations?
Where do I find the range of "sensitivity to fluctuations in voltage or waveform distortions" for the iMac 3.06 GH Intel Duo?
Has anybody adjusted the sensitivity on an APC UPS, and with what results?
    Thanks

The Format Value function will not accept an array so put it inside a loop. Use a shift register to append all the values from the array to the string.

  • Some artists names missing after power fluctuation

hi, i was wondering if you guys encountered the same problem on the subject. i was updating manually some songs on my ipod when the power fluctuated thus shutting down the PC and disconnecting my iPod abruptly. when i reconnected, all artists are shown on itunes as if nothing happened. when finished updating and disconnected my iPod, i happen to notice that some artists are no longer on the list when i browse them. however when i look for their songs in tne song list, its there as well as their albums. from then on when i update new artists into my iPod it no longer adds up to the artists list. do you have any idea how i can i correct this error without restoring my iPod? i have reset few times but its no use. thanks to your inputs.

well the main reason why i don't consider restoring is that i believe it erases all what is on the iPod. the hardwork of importing songs, editing, placing an artwork, etc... will take weeks to finish. i don't have any other drive to back-up. i'd like my library polished squeaky clean without incorrect information such as misspelled words. anyway i can bear with this little error that it has rather than to start rebuilding a library. i hope i don't encounter other errors though. thanks for your reply.

Ah, you didn't read the fine print on installing Lion, did you? None of your old software will run in Lion.
    You have two choices:
    A) Buy all new or updated software
    B) Partition the hard drive and install an older version of OSX to run your older apps.
You did not give us any idea of what PowerPC apps you were running, so additional options:
    C)  Restore to Snow Leopard
    D)  Install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta which runs PowerPC apps) in Parallels 7 in Lion:

  • Problems with new Mac Book Pro 13'' +power adaptor

    Hi there,
I'm new here and first of all I'd like to appologize from my lack of technical language, since my only interesst in computers is that they don't give me problems so I can keep not knowing too much about them.
Ok, so I bought the new Mac Book Pro 13'' exactly 2 months ago cause my old and long travelled Power Book G4 died. I didn't hesitate to spend the money to buy the new one, cause I was so happy with my experience with the old one and in my mind returning to PCs was not even considered.
BUT...I'm not totally happy about my new laptop...from day 1 Safari would just close itself but I didn't give too much thought about it. After this, not only Safari can close up to several times a day, but also iphoto or any other program that I use for work. But that's not all..One day it would take minutes to start running and it would go extremely slow...another day it would start also very slow but also it wouldn't show the tools bar on top or my folders. Another time it would show me, instead of the normal starting page, a page where it would ask me to accept or not a kind of revision for hardware. After so many problems of course I pressed yes...everything seemed normal, then computer started and seemed to be running normal again (aside from this safari and other programs that shut down). Today my computer, when moved, just went totally blank but fortunately I could start it with nor problems after it.
So...anyone knows what the problem must be?? Should I take it to a Technical service ??? and there's another issue...i'm handing in m phD in a week so I can't just be without computer now, and in a week I'm flying to Canada where I also will need my computer for work...what can I do???
And the second problem...the power adaptor from the beginning seemed to act funny sometimes...sometimes charching, sometimes not, I would follow the instructions in the support part and after being several minutes changing one cord for the other, to keep it 1 minute disconnected and so at some point it would start functioning again. But this happened seldom so also I would think it was a protectiion mechanism of the adapter. But, when this is happening more often than not, then it gets annoying. Also I've been transporting it in a careful way since I bought it to find that after only 2 months in the cord (from the computer to adaptor) you can see the internal cable as if there was some cut...a third one seems to be appearing too. I've taken it to the technical support and the guy who was helfpul but also honest said he couldn't do anything for me cause since there were those cuts, he could always be said that it was a misuse of it-an accident and then he would have to pay the replace himself. Well, it's not!!! My old adaptor has been transported in a way less careful way and it's survived with NO problems for 5 years. The material is clearly different from the old cord. This one because it's new, I only need to put it in a special bag air protected. Honestly I don't feel happy to pay 80 € for an adaptor that I don't know if it's gonna last me only 2 months or that I know I can't transport normally. The guy suggested me to ask in forums and to call directly to the apple technical service.
Again, has anyone had any similar problems with the adaptor???
    Rosanna

Take it to an Apple retailer and have the computer repaired.  It is still in warranty.

  • New Macbook 3 pronged ac power cord

I just had my ac adaptor replaced under warranty. They sent me a 3 pronged power cord. Is this correct and they are just using a grounded cable now?

As far as I know, Apple includes 3-prong extension cables as well as the standard two-prong snap-in module in the box with all their new laptops. I got a 3-prong cable with my circa 2005 iBook G4 1.42, and I believe the ground pin connects to the metal "button" on the power supply.
Back in 2002, my iBook G3 600 shipped with a 2-prong extension cable. The "button" that the module snapped into was plastic.

  • New 30-inch screen wont power up!

Just received my new 30inch screen to go with my new mac-pro. Plugged everything in as it said, mac-pro worked fine. The screen however never came on. Tried changing plug sockets tried unplugging and re plugging in, tried reconnecting the adapter at back of the screen and still nothing.
So tried plugging in my old sony lcd for my pc and that works, so not sure why the apple display didnt work. Anyone had problems with the power block? Not sure what to do now!

Why not contact Apple? If you just bought it and it's "DOA" they will replace it.

  • New Time Capsule unable to power

One day after setting up my new Time Capsule yesterday, it would lose power, until unplugged then plugged back in. Now it no longer powers up at all. Clearly it needs to be returned, but since I had completed my first backup, I'd rather not have my information on it anymore. Is there a good/easy way to get the data off the drive?

None.. Apple have never yet failed to clear off customers data.. so their record is excellent.. (If you store the launch codes to the ICBM silo in your backyard then maybe you should ask Apple to hand you the drive..)
You could be the first to have your info posted. It is one good reason for using encrypted backups.
Apple sell the unit as sealed.. unlike most real NAS on the market this is not accessible to the public to fix, replace or repair the hard disk. I would not be worried though.

  • New iMac is buzzing with power on or shut off

I purchased my new iMac on 4/26 and turned it on everything was great.  Let it go into sleep mode overnight and the next evening it was buzzing quite loudly, interfereing.  I tried shutting it down, still buzzing, power source removed no muzzing any more.  I know electronics have buzzing sounds but after having the computer shut off for 24 hours the buzzing went away, only to come back after the computer had been on for 30 minutes.  Is it possible this is just a defective machine?  If i exchange it will it happen again?  could the electricity in my home caused the buzzing?

No iMac should produce a buzzing sound.
    Yes, it's possible there's a defect.

  • My brand new Macbook pro can't power my USB Mbox 2 pro . Why not?

Can ANYONE help me because it seems like both APPLE and AVID can't. I just got a new macbook pro last month Aug/2011 just for audio and production. I installed protools 7.3 and when plugging my Mbox in the power lights on it are very dim and Protools says Unable to locate digidesign hardware. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and better yet how I can fix it? I tried diiferent USB cables, different USB ports, I tried connecting through an AC powered USB hub, I also have a crap PC on which the same software was installed and it works fine on that. Right now my mac OS is Lion 10.7.1.

Yeah, I just posted about the exact same issue.  I have an Imac and another Macbook Pro and it works fine, just not on the mew Macbook Pro.  I'm baffled, but intend to go to the Apple store to check this out.  If I get anywhere, I will report back.

  • New Sharp CD-DK890N - no power

Just got a new (last night) CD-DK890N, plugged it in, played it last night for about 30 min., played it for about 10 minutes this morning, unplugged it and plugged it into another outlet (yes, working outlet), and now it will not turn on.  I know it is getting power, as it initializes the CD Disc changer, but there is never a display of any sort after that and never anything else.  I have attempted the reset and anything else Sharp has suggested.  Need to know what to do next.  THX.

...not sure I understand your problem...
...are you trying to reinstall Windows?..you're setting CD-ROM as first device but no disk is detected so it's booting from the HDD...maybe you should check the connections on the CD-ROM and that it is jumpered correctly...look in BIOS to see if it is detected at all...
...the USB keyboard works for configuring BIOS but not when you get to Windows?..that may be because Windows was installed on another machine and drivers are borked...use a PS/2 keyboard and mouse or put PS/2 adapters on the USB input devices...

  • Optical power fluctuations

    Hi!
I am currently implementing a DWDM network based using ONS 15540 ESPX. Lately I have been noticing fluctuation on receive optical power level reading on the trunk side when i issued show interface wave command. Multiple issue of this command with yield optical power level reading between -11 to -19 dbm. Is this normal. So far the signal level is good and the network is operating OK. Apreciate your expert advice. Thanks.

    Hi!
No alarm on the active transponder except on the non active tarnsponder (the one with no client connected to it). So if the transponder is the culprit, is there any work around like cleaning optical connector on the trunk side? Thanks.
