Help!  I want to move all my iTunes music, podcasts, etc. from an old PC to a new PC. I set up Home Sharing on both and it works.  I followed the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 to the letter.  At Step 11, I clicked on Home Sharing on my new PC, then Edit > Select All so I could then import everything to the new computer.  No matter what I try, the Import button doesn't work.  There are two buttons on the lower right hand side of the iTunes screen - one for Settings and one for Import.  The Settings button is clickable but the Import button isn't even live.  In other words, I can see it but not click on it.  I have double-checked my firewall and it is not the problem.  How can I get the Import button to work?

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • I can't drag a movie from my iTunes library on my new computer to my iPad.

I can't drag a movie from my iTunes library on my new computer to my iPad.  Supposedly the computer isn't authorized but when I go to authorization it says it already is.  All my old movies that I migrated will drag over just not the new download ones I just downloaded.  Any suggestions?

Are you able to sync the movies in the iTunes Library from the Movies pane in iTunes?

  • How to move ALL my iTunes stuff to a new installation...

Hi there! I have an iTunes library with songs, videos, and PDFs and I want to back it up and move it to my new computer. So I have two partitions on my HDD... I keep all the stuff in a folder on the D:. I then format the C: drive, move the "iTunes" folder out of "My Music" and install iTunes (creating a new/fresh iTunes folder). Now how do I get all of my music, videos, and PDFs back into iTunes? I know how to get the music and videos... (pref - copy music to iTunes library setting). What about the PDFs?
Any ideas? This applies to both my PC and my PowerBook.
    Thanks,
    Keith

The easiest method is to 'clone' the current data and move it to the exact same location on the new PC.
Make note of the exact path of the music files, photos, and other items. Copy them to the same drive letter and path on the new PC as they are currently. Also make a copy of the 'iTunes Library.itl' file and use that for your iTunes database file once you install iTunes on the new PC (you'll need to copy the old ITL file over the just created one on the new PC).
You may also consider copying the two 'iTunes.pref' files that are in your 'C:\Documents and Settings' sub-folder (do a search for them).
Done correctly, it will completely clone your current PC status onto the new PC.
That's the simple explanation. Implementing it can be difficult and takes some care to get it right.

  • HT1589 My laptop memory is getting very full, mostly with music in I tunes.  I have an external hard drive and I would like to move all the Itunes library to the external drive but I am afraid I will screw up I tunes and I won't be able to find and or syn

My hard drive is filling up with music files in I Tunes.  I would like to move them to my external hard drive but I am afraid when I do that I won't be able to sync my music to my devices.  I have just added I cloud and signed up for I Match.  I wonder if this would allow me to move all my I tunes files to the external drive.  What will be the impact of this.  I believe I can set the default to the new location for future downloads

Move the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive, e.g. as X:\iTunes where X: is the letter of the drive. Hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose then browse to the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.

  • Transfering iTunes library/music to new comuter.

I currently have an iMac G5 but have a new iMac on order. When it arrives, how do I move my iTunes library and all its music from the old iMac to the new one?
I don't want to mess up any of the playlists.

Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable, start up the iMac G5 with the T key held down, and drag the iTunes folder inside of the Music folder of your account's home folder from the old iMac to the same location on the new one. Home folders are located in the Users folder of the hard disk by default.

  • Have new computer and want to put all items on current iPod to new computer.  How can I do this?

I have a new computer, other one crashed.  I would like to transfer all items currently on iPod into iTunes.  iTunes wants me to erase to sync.  I don't want to lose everything I have.  How do I take care of this?

You need to copy everything from your backup copy of your computer to your new one.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases.  Without syncing File>Transfer Purchases

  • Best way to move iTunes Library to a new PC?

    Hi, all:
I'm trying to help my sister-in-law... she wants to move her entire iTunes Library from her 10-year-old PC to a new Windows laptop.
What is the best way to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    Bill in CT

If the entire library is on the external drive then simply copy the iTunes folder into <User's Music> on the new computer, then install iTunes. If you've already installed iTunes you will want to remove the empty iTunes folder in <User's Music> first.
If it turns out you only have the media folder on the external drive then take a look at this post...
