New pc's:xp home or pro?

I am preparing a purchase spec for a group of new, standalone DAQ and LV7 laptop PC's running executables. We are using Win2000SP4, but want to migrate to XP. In a non-network environment, is XP pro or XP home recommended?

Provided that you aren't planning to use the corporate networking capabilities of WinXP Pro, WinXP Home will perform just as well and save your company money. Microsoft provides a good comparison between the two versions here.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Windows xp home OR pro on macpro?

has anyone had any problems running XP Home on their macpro? i had asked a question in the bootcamp forum and someone said that the home version doesn't support multiple processors and that i should get the pro version of XP.
also, do you guys think i would be better off just adding a new HD and dedicating XP to that instead of partitioning any of my existing drives? i'm planning on installing bootcamp AND parallels (from what i understand parallels can now boot up a bootcamp install of XP). i have no problem getting a new HD and i'm a little weary about partitioning a drive already in use.

They are selling today XP Home on Core Duo and Core 2 Duo, so my guess is that there no problems.
There are major differences with Home and Pro version, mainly remote sessions, number of connections, Webservers etc.
Find a shop that builds and sells PC, they are alowed to sell XP OEM versions for a fraction of the store price. I paid my XP Pro 100.- swiss francs and in stores it was over 400.- For this price, you do not get a box with the fancy manual, but what's important is the CD and the Key...
Also, install XP with Bootcamp, then to another install with Parallels and call to activate the second copy... same Processor Serial Number will generate the same activation keys twice, Microsoft will never know as only one copy can run at one given time. When you call, say you had to reinstall...
    Have fun.

I just created a new profile/user on my MacBook Pro. My pointer/mouse on my trackpad. It works fine in my older user profile, but when I go to the new profile my mac will not respond to clicks. The Mouse moves but will not click. Already tried restarting and the pram zap. The problem starts when I log out of my main profile. I get to the login screen and my laptop stops responding to clicks. When I manage to make my way back to my main profile the mouse works perfectly.  Should I just delete the new profile and try again?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

How do you add a new icon to the home screen?

The only new icons you can add to your home screen are webclips, which can be added by using the "+" button in safari on the desired web page.
You won't be able to add new apps until February when the SDK is fully seeded to developers.

  • How can I copy bookmarks from my old computer to my new computer, both with Windows XP Pro?

Transferring bookmarks from old computer to new computer, both with Windows XP Pro?
    Thanks for your h4elp.
Also, can I create a file of bookmarks in MS Word or Open Office so that I can save them?

You can export your bookmarks to an HTML file on your old computer, and them import that file on your new computer. The HTML file also is your backup, and if you open it into Word, you could save it as a DOC file if you prefer.
For more information, check out these articles:

I should have added to my posting (instead of using this "reply" -  it is the server passwork it is asking for and I have never known that I had one and assumed it was the passwork I always used for this type of thing.

I doubt the license is affecting the performance - it might be a case of the software being too old for the machine.
In any case, you can contact Adobe support thru chat and have them reset your activation count to eliminatre your doubts regarding the license.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

I had creative cloud installed in a parallels deskto virtual machine on my mac, I delete the virtual machine without deactivate the creative cloud. after reinstall a new VM running windows 8.1. pro 64 bits, I downloaded the creative cloud installer but it does not install ang give an Error code 72, it is assuming that I already are using the Creative cloud in 2 computer, but itis no the case, how to solve this situation?

Dave: I did the Microsoft Update two days before this happened, and rebooted as required.  I just created a new restore point and lauched Creative Cloud.  Now I get the famous white screen:
It just sits and spins (been 10 minutes now).
Fortunately, I saved away this command (which I've had to use 4 or 5 times already):
    del %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\opm.db
Unfortunately now, I get this (even after closing the above window):
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
So I killed everything that said "Adobe" in the task manager and this time, the command succeeded.
Fortunately, the current apps seem to still work.  I can't seem to find the "Creative Cloud" app in the applications on my system, but I launched Photoshop CC, told it to look for updates, and got a list of the 5 prgorams that need updates in the Adobe Application manager:
I will proceed with the updates, holding my breath.

  • Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated the system to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. Why and what am I supposed to do?

Apple put a new hard drive into my MacBook Pro and updated it from Lion to Maverick. They did not put iPhoto and iWeb on it but I did have it in Lion. They also didn't put Pages, Keynote or Numbers back on it until I argued with them. Of course, I didn't have my data backed up. My hard drive was destroyed when I tried to install the update of Mavericks myself. I should not have to buy iWeb and iPhoto when I already had them. Suggestions?

    cwhargrave,
have you tried looking in the App Store, to see if you can redownload iWeb and iPhoto there gratis?
If you haven’t done so already, you should purchase an external hard drive to act as a Time Machine backup destination, so that you’ll have an option to rollback to a working environment if a new OS installation is troublesome.

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.
Here's the link for the safeboot
