New PDF Files Unsearchable

I'm sorry if this is an often repeated question, but I used to be able to use Spotlight to go right to the entry I am searching for in Preview. Now when I add updated directories, Spotlight no longer reveals my search entry in these documents. I can not even use the Preview search function. Is there an indexing process that is no longer running?

I think that's exactly the issue, Mike. My scanner
software only allows me to scan in as various image
filetypes or as a .pdf, but the resulting file (even
if it's a .pdf) is unsearchable by Spotlight (or
Adobe Reader for that matter).
What is the solution? I'm using an Epson Perfection
1660 Photo scanner. Do I need to get third-party
software that will enable me to scan the document as
text? And if so, where do I get it? Thanks!
As I understand it OSX Spotlight can search/ index text encoded within a PDF, but not graphics. As a result you can only search the file name of PDFs that just contain graphics. One way to go might be to utilize Optical character recognition (OCR), which is a feature associated with some scanners and their software. This will identify text in the scanned image, and can be used to produce a PDF with text and graphics, one that is searchable by Spotlight.

With a pdf file open, and wanting to create a new pdf file using the print function with Adobe PDF as the prnter, I can no longer "print" the file to a new pdf file. Make sure the Print to File option in the Print dialog is ticked off.

After you sign in to Create pdf service, you will see the list of pdf files you converted.
Each pdf file is a link which on being clicked opens the pdf within the page. On the top right corner of the page you will find the icon as specified in the screenshot below to download the file.
You can click on the icon to download the converted pdf file.

Why can't I open new PDF files into iBooks

I cannot open new PDF files in iBooks, they flash really quick in PDF folder then disappear. I'm really frustrated

If you aren't getting the reset link on the Password & Security section of your account then you don't have a rescue email address (an alternate email address is different), and you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions - you will have to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.

Acrobat 4.0 possible patch to handle newer .pdf files?

I am currently at a small printing company that uses a Heidelberg Prosetter and interconnected software programs for platemaking in our pre-press department. We currently have an outdated Heidelberg meta dimension system that I was told will only handle Acrobat version 4.0 files. I get errors when a newer .pdf version is sent to me from my customers. So far I have found work arounds such as saving the .pdf file down to a compatible file, but am running out of options, and the newest version 9.0 files are really giving me a headache. Saving the file down doesn't seem to help. Is there a possible patch I can find to allow version 4.0 to handle the newest files? Heidelberg has told me that if we were to upgrade to a newer version of Acrobat we would need to upgrade the rest of our software (PitStop Server, Meta Dimension, SignaStation) since they all work together to burn plates and that would cost us upwards of $25,000. Being a small company we can not afford this and the owners have basically told me to work with what I have. Can anyone help me?

I still keep having some issues with transparent objects and drop shadows with a spot colors. I just spoke to our Heidelberg rep and he mentioned that they even had to update their software to handle the 9.0, and are now recommending that customers upgrade to the newest version of Meta Dimension (which is very costly I might Ad!). I think I am just stuck between a rock and a hard place, and will be there as long as I work here! Not only do I have issues with the transparent objects, I am sometimes getting a flat out will not open error message in EnFocus PittStop which is our pre-flight software. I am going to have to post this on the EnFocus forums and hope that someone might be able to solve that for me. Thanks for the input. I kind of thought that a patch like that was out of the question! There is just no help for poor people like me!

[SOLVED]New .pdf files won't open in Gnome

Just noticed this today; seems easy to replicate, just print a pdf somewhere, or download one, and attempt to open it with nautilus. I don't get a preview of what the file looks like before opening, and upon double-click, evince merely flashes up for a moment and closes. ePDFviewer has a similar effect. Deleting ~/.thumbnails/fail doesn't regenerate a preview either. Also, old pdf files keep their previews and open fine.
I'm going to blame something within the very recent gnome update. Any help with this one?
Apologies if this is somewhere else; I couldn't see anyone mention it, and it seems like an obvious bug :S

I have the same problem. I can't open some pdf files with evince. But I don't think it's a evince problem. I tried with apvlv and both give me segmentation fault. There is a problem with some package that avoid me to open some pdf files? This start to happen, if I notice, after the upgrade of gnome related packages I think.
I can open all my pdf files in my computer and as well some of random pdfs found at internet.

I tried on debian squeeze (I have installed on a virtual machine) and I could open. That's why I think this is related somehow with the new gnome packages.

Preview has trouble new pdf file

I have never had problems with Preview and PDF's, but today I tried to open a PDF file I downloaded and it opens but some of the pages are not displaying right. I downloaded it again and the same thing happens. If I open it with Adobe Reader 9.0 it displays fine. I need to open in Preview so I can save it to Iphoto and use it in a Keynote Presentation.
Any Ideas. Is there a newer version of Preview? I have version 4.1

Photoshop 5.5 Not Opening Newer .pdf files?

I am a volunter on our neighborhood's Board Association and I am in charge of putting together our quarterly newsletter. I have used photoshop 5.5 in the past to open .pdf files sent to me to save them to a .jpeg for insertion into the newsletter that is created in Pagemaker 6.5. (I know, I know, pretty atiquated, but it works!) However, I have received two more .pdf files that, for all I can figure out, were created with the newer Acrobat 9.3, and my Photoshop 5.5 will not open them. It gives me a "Generic PDF Parser Error: There was an error processing the document. The file may be damaged or corrupted." Is this indeed true of the .pdf files and the Acrobat 9.3 connection, and if so, what can I do besides the obvious -- upgrading?!

HOw do I create a new PDF file that incorporates the text changes I made in the previous PDF file?

All of my edits appear properly in the saved file but as pop-ups etc. that cannot be seen when I print a copy.
This seems like an obvious thing to want to do, but I cannot find out how to do it from any of the documentation (including video tutorials).

Something to try:
Create a Comment Summary report (a PDF file).
There are several approaches that can be used.
--| Work out of the Comment List (Comments > Comment View > Show Comments List or click the overlapped comment bubbles at the bottom of the Navigation panel)
--| Comments > Show Comments List
--| Comments > Summarize Comments
--| Comments > Print with Comments Summary
In the Summarize Options dialog, select the desired layout, paper size, how comments are to be sorted and font size.
Select Include All comments. If you want to sort by review status, author, comment type, etc then go into the Comments List.
The tool bar provides various means of configuration.
When the Print dialog is present, under the "Properties" button (upper right), use the drop-down menu for 'Comments and Forms' to select "Document and Markups".
The imprint on the paper will have the PDF page content and annotations (comments) provided in the PDF by use of the Text Edit tools.
So, you can provide the text entered into a Text Edit's pop-up two ways.
First - You have the PDF of the Comments Summary Report.
Second - You have the hardcopy of this PDF.
Of note is that, with Adobe's Tech Comm Suite, you can author in FrameMaker or MS Word, output a PDF for comments and review, then bring these comments back into the source authoring file.

I have newer pdf files that show the 1st page of the document as the icon instead of just the logo.

Compress it as a zip file and add the zip file to the mail as an enclosure.
In the Finder control (right) click on the pdf file to bring up the Finder's contextual menu and select Compress. A .zip file will be created in the same directory as the pdf file. Then add that zip to your mail message. The receiver will of course have to expand the zip on his or here end. But zip is fairly general and woks on both macs and windows.

Upload new pdf file with the same name

We are trying to upload a pdf file with a specific name (i.e
file.pdf) that has links to it on many pages of a website. We need
the pdf file to keep the same name but when we try to upload it,
Contribute is being 'smart' and changing the name so as to not
overwrite the file on the server. But we WANT to overwrite the file
on the server. Any ideas on how we can achieve this in Contribute?

Actually, we have the same problem and I believe the answer
lies in the abilities that your role has assigned to it. The
solution that ThinkInk gave works *if you are allowed to delete
files*. If your role doesn't have that permission, then it will
just upload another copy of the file and rename it.
It's rather irritating that there isn't more control over
this...our server is littered with *thousands and thousands* of
duplicate files that originate from this situation.
If your administrator wants you to be able to delete files as
well, then you could get him/her to give you that permission, and I
believe this will allow you to overwrite the file by using the
"Publish file from my computer" option described above.
