New phone won't allow backup - not enough memory yet it backed up fine on 4s

I've upgraded my handset from 4s to 5c. I've followed the instructions from setup and allowed the new handset to download contacts etc from iCloud. Everything is there & I've now factory reset the 4s in order to pass onto my son. However, I can't backup the 5c as it states that I require 2.1 but only have 1.4mb available. How can this be (as I didn't experienced any issues with 4s) and what can I do to resolve?
When I access manage storage it shows "iPhone 3.5gb" and "this iPhone 0kb". Is this causing me the problem??

Always sync photos to a computer for archiving - never rely solely on icloud backups, too many users have lost their photos by doing that.

Your iPhone's iOS must be same or newer than the one in backups. In your case it is older so you need to update your iPhone and then recover it with backup.

You can't have content in iCloud without having it on your phone, you will need to look at deleting items from your device that you don't need. Movies and TV shows from iTunes are possibly a good start because they tend to be large and can be redownloaded at a later date.

Hey, as far as I know you need a sim card to activate after a restore
It however does not have to be a fully working sim card, just not blocked or with a pass code, I repair/refurb. some iPhones and can only advise to try and get a free sim card from a provider supported on your phone and activate it with this, or maybe someone can lend you theirs for 5 mins?
To clarify, I have heard there are ways around this, but they sound dubious.

New iPhones don't come setup with an Apple ID/Password. What you're experiencing is called Activation Lock, & unless you know the original Apple ID/Password that was originally used to first activate this phone, you won't be able to reactivate it.
You can login to iCloud.com, from any computer, use Find My Phone to locate & erase the phone. But, you'll still need to know the original Apple ID/Password to reactivate it.

After it would not work I did a Icloud back up of my old phone and restored it on the new phone, but I have other music and apps on my Itunes that I would like the option to sync and I like to be able to backup my phone on my Mac. Yea... agreed I had about 160 GB free on my Hard drive and tried to synce my iPhone 5S (currently about 32GB in use of 64) and iit says I don't have enough free space. Uh...yes....yes I do. So I cleaned up backups in iTunes from my previous phone and moved some large files to my 1TB time capsule...now I have over 200GB Free...and yet...when I try to synce my phone and it moves to the "backup" part...it thinks for a moment...and then says...nope I don't have enough space on my hard drive. Must be new Apple Math? I ran diagnostics on my system...ran a full permissions check and cleaned up everything. Personally..this particular iMac is older. Stuck on 10.6.8 --- I'm thinking it's some sort of 64bit/versus 32bit problem. Still, this should be considered a software defect. Apple needs to create a fix. Alternately... yes...I would like a new iMac, but they aren't free so... if anyone wants to upgrade me I won't turn you down.

I tried downloading 8.1 wirelessly(!). No warning about not enough memory. Software downloaded by would not load in phone (4S) - cell antenna went into permanent "search" mode(?). Took phone to PC to download videos to make room for IOS 8.1. iTunes does not recognize the phone. Was able to delete most videos using PC "my computer" and browsing to those files. Phone then allowed me to load 8.1, but now it is stuck on a black screen with the iTunes logo telling me to connect to iTunes: only iTunes still won't recognize the phone! Phone is frozen on this screen. Global reset (power + home button) only turns phone off briefly, then returns to this eternal screen of death.

After running photoshop cs6 for an hour or two, I could not complete the save command because "there is not enough memory" message comes and my file won't save

sounds like you have some corruption going on, or perhaps a permissions issue (though I think that's less likely). Here are some things I'd try.
Create a new sequence with the proper settings for your footage. Copy all the clips in your old sequence and paste into the new sequence.
Create a new project with a new sequence. Copy and paste the clips of old sequence into the new sequence of the new project. Save As and give it a new file name.
Check the pathway to your Render folder and your Save folder. Make sure that permissions allow for READ AND WRITE all the way down. In other words, if your render folder is in:
Harddrive/FCP/Render
Then make sure all three have READ WRITE permissions applied. Do this by selecting them one by one and hitting CMD+I for info. Then look at the permissions.
Hopefully one of those options will help.

Without knowing what was going to happen, I clicked on the backup from my iPod and then I lost everything I already had in my phone: mostly contacts and pictures. Although afraid of the answer, is there a solution to retrieving the info, especially the pictures?

by any chance did you do a back up to iCloud? if not there isn't a way to retrieve lost info with out a back up.

I was looking for something on the net, and i run into this post. Am not sure if you have found a soulution or not, anyways, if not here are some programs that i love and they show you every thing in your iPhone:
iFunBox, iBackupBot and DiskAid
am sure they will help you find what you want and then you can just copy them to your computer.
if you use Mac, iPhoto will import everything for you.
