New Pioneer DVR-110 installed, "patchburned", BUT drive won't stay closed.

Have had some good advice on how to intall a new DVD/CD drive, but after installing a New Pioneer DVR-110 (I thought succesfully) on my G4, and downloading Patchburn for Panther, the DVD drive now won't function as the computer keeps ejecting or opening the drive tray.
After installing the drive, I installed Patchburn, and Toast did recognize the drive. I then tried to verify disc permissions on the computer and it kept getting hung up during repair/verify saying it lost connection with the drive manager. Tried Onyx to repair/verify permissions and it too gets hung up. (Had to force quit)
Any advice on how to get the drawer of the DVD drive to stay closed and what else I need to do to get it working?... Alas I can not even reinstall my original OSX software now as I can't boot from the disc drive since it won't stay closed.
Thanks, Rob

You can verify the closeness by opening the empty drive door with the KB and then hold the door open and close drawer with the KB.

• Dvd Drive Won't Stay Closed.

Hello,
I am having an issue with a HP ZBook, Windows 8.1 64bit
Processor:Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4210M CPU @ 2.60GHz
RAM: 8.00GB
BIOS:rev. 1.08
The issue is that everytime I close my Cd drive it keeps poping back open. It will whirl for about a minute or two then stop and pop back open this computer was on a fresh install and it still happened.
If this is a previous known issue I did not find a solution existing on the forums.
Any help is appreciated.
Thankyou for your help in advanced.

It generally means the drive needs to be replaced. That is a pretty new laptop and I am thinking it is likely still under warranty. Replacing the DVD drive is pretty easy and HP will likely just send you a new drive for a self-help swap and ask you to return the defective one. Let us know if you want a link to installation instructions.

How did you "move everything" over?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

It could just be a compatibility issue. Have you tried resetting the Nano with everything connected to see if that makes a difference?
To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

I think you have to turn off Private Browsing.
Tap "Private" on Safari Screen to disable Private Browsing. When top of screen is white, Private Browsing is off.

• Optical Drive will not stay closed

The computer dropped 2 feet. Never happened before. It's working OK but I can't get the optical drive door to stay closed. I would imagine the drive isn't working then. What are my options (I've not any experience opening a machine)? What will Apple want to fix something like this?

+What will Apple want to fix something like this?+
Likely more than the iBook is worth.
Some users whose drive wouldn't stay closed have resorted to using duct tape to tape it closed.
Was the computer on when it took the tumble? If so, I would advise repairing the hard drive either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
If you're in the United States, you can use _this page_ to locate an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area.
Good luck.

• Combo drive suddenly won't stay closed, how do I fix this?

Hello,
today, my combo drive suddenly came open and won't stay closed anymore. If I push the close button it closes, and then just opens again. I have tried repairing my disk and reinstalling OSX, I even tried a different keyboard in case the eject key was sticking. I can't figure out what is wrong. Is the drive bad? Can I get a replacement drive that I can install myself if this is the problem?
Thanks for you help.

Took the following action which (knock on wood) seems to have solved it!
Plug in iPhone; when Sync starts, click on "iPhone" under Devices; click on "Summary" page; under Options at the bottom of the page, uncheck "Sync wiyh this iPhone over ..."; click apply; exit after sync is complete......my problem disappeared!
Note: if the box is already unchecked, try checking it; apply; uncheck; apply

• Pioneer dvr-110d installed but not working properly

hello,
i'm new to the forum. i just purchased a pioneer dvr-110d for my my powermac g4 466mhz. it plays dvds correctly but the only thing that it doesnt do is load my osx 10.4 disc. i got the drive so i can install software without borrowing an external drive (i needed to reload my 10.4 because of other errors) so everytime i put the 10.4 disc in it reads it and says to restart but when that happens it restarts to a gray and sometimes blue screen. so the only way i get the disc back out is with restarting with the shift key held down and then i can force eject it. you guys are my last hope. it seems to working fine except with the startup disc. which is so strange to me.. and the system profiler recognizes it also

Hi
When you installed the drive, did you set the jumper block on the left rear of the drive to "Master"?
Have you set Energy Saver to sleep NEVER & unchecked HDD sleep?
Have you tried starting up w/ the "C" key?
Have you tried updating the drive firmware? Search Discussions for DVR-110, there are many threads with links to updating on a Mac.
Assuming you've also tried cleaning the install DVD, and updating firmware makes no difference, you should try booting from some other installer CD/DVD, to confirm that the drive is bootable; if it will not boot ANY installers, I would return it.
EDIT: you may want to also try
resetting PRAM & NVRAM, always a good idea when replacing hardware.

• My brand new MacBook pro charged last night but now won't turn on, help!

My MacBook pro charged fully last night but now won't turn on, the green battery light is flashing but no matter how long I hold the power button it won't start. I just bought the MacBook in January.

Well then it isn't really Brand New. Brand New kinda means you bought it yesteerday or 2-3 days ago.
In any event youy need to take it to Apple and have them fix or replace it.
You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix.

• CD/DVD Drive Won't stay open

Never had a problem like this before....
On both drives on my Mac Pro, I can eject both fine, but they instantly close.
When burning a DVD i have to open it and throw the disc in before it closes, like an old west gunslinger with quick reflexes. Same thing when getting a disc out, gotta be like the karate kid.
Does it all the time now without fail, with no programs running after a fresh restart. Don't know any specific thing that caused it, just one day I went to burn a disc and it closed before i got the disc in...
Any ideas??

I have the opposite problem. Brand new Mac Pro, and the CD/DVD drive drawer opened on the first power up after receipt of shipment from Apple. Every time I close the drawer, it immediately opens up again. The Disk Utility "Info" page shows that the software detects the drawer is open, so it's not a reversed sense problem.
I will be trying to find out how to get Apple to fix this post haste on their dime. My CD/DVD drive is essentially DOA. Don't they test these machines before shipping them?!

• The system drive won't stay unlocked

When attempting to use the OSX Snow Leopard install disk for the repair tools I press and hold the C key and unfortunately the disk ejects.????!!!! I looked at the "Get Info" data and noticed that all of the drives including the system drive are locked. So I unlocked the system drive and rebooted with the Snow Leopard Install Disk, held down the C key and again the disc ejected. I looked at the "Get Info" data and the drive had relocked itself again. What do I need to do to keep the drive unlocked. I won't be able to access the Install Disc and repair the drive with the advanced tools unless I can get and keep the drive unlock for read and write purposes. I might be wrong about the access problem and maybe the Install Disc is ejecting for some other reason but I still need to be able to unlock the drives for read and write purposes and after I "restarted" with the Install Disc the drive had relocked itself. What gives...????

• Lacie 2big thunderbolt drive won't stay asleep

I am connecting a Lacie 2big Thunderbolt drive to a 15" Macbook Pro late 2013. When the computer sleeps, the drive spins down and then immediately spins back up again, on and on. The drive will not stay asleep, but constantly powers down and then back up, down and then back up, on and on. Ejecting the disk first has no effect. In an odd twist, if I connect the disk through the thunderbolt port on a lacie esata/thunderbolt adapter that has an esata drive also connected and powered on, then the disks will power down and stay down when the computer sleeps. If, however, there is not a powered on esata disk connected to the hub, then the lacie thunderbolt drive will not stay asleep.
I contacted Lacie technical support and they replied "The automatic shut-off feature is based off the drive detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port. If your computer, even when powered off, keeps a little current running through, the drive may not know it is supposed to shut off or on. "
Has anybody else had this problem or connected this drive and had it work properly?

I have two of the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt devices (I hesitate to call them 'drives' because each device has two disk drives in the enclosure) and when I put my MBP to sleep (which is seldom) the drives 'sleep' (no spinning sounds).
I'm not sure why your device would be "detecting a current being maintained across the Thunderbolt port" - unless that's something new in the Retina machines (which I don't have!).
If I were you, I would work your way up the tech chain of command at LaCie - I've owned their drives for decades and have always had good luck with their technical support, even if I had to notch it up a bit to get satisfactory results.
Good luck,
Clinton

No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the iconic cable cars that climb up the vertiginous hills of the city. Of the twenty-three lines established between 1873 and 1890, three remain: two routes from downtown near Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, and a third route along California Street.

The cable cars rely on cables running constantly beneath the road’s surface. The driver—or gripman—uses a lever to grip the cable to pull the car and its passengers up the hill. The gripman requires not only great strength, but also great skill. He needs to know where to release the cable to coast over crossing cables and points. The conductor works in close cooperation with the gripman, operating the brake at the rear of the car to prevent it from running out of control on the downward slopes.

Cable Car Tips

A single ride on a cable car costs $6. If you plan to travel around the city, it’s often cheaper to buy a Muni Passport, which gives you unlimited rides on San Francisco’s extensive public transport system, including the cable cars (but not the BART subway system). Even a single-day passport ($14) will save you money if you make a return trip, and stop off to visit Chinatown one way.

There are often long lines at the cable car terminus, particularly on the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde routes. If you don’t want to wait, try walking a few stops along the route. The conductor usually leaves a small number of places to pick up passengers on the way. The California Street route is generally less crowded (but not as spectacular).
