New Powerbook G4, Want to use 8.6

I searched through other forums, but didn't find the answers I needed. Some came close, but not quite. So I apologize in advance if this is answered somewhere I didn't see.
I bought a PowerMac G4 in 1999 and upgraded to OS 8.6 soon after. Ever since then, I've loved 8.6 and only about a year ago was forced to get a cheap PC to run newer software since I refused to upgrade the OS that I'd come to adore. In the last month, I finally bought a Powerbook G4 with OSX Tiger and rather than spending hundreds of dollars to get new versions of software I already have for OS 8.6 (not to mention the software I use regularly and know there's no version anymore compatible with OSX) I decided to partition 10 GB off the hard drive to install OS 8.6.
Unfortunately, it wasn't as easy as I hoped. I had to buy an OS9 disk so I can run Classic programs (I've never even seen OS9 used before, much less OSX so you can imagine how befuddled I've been) and when I went to install it on the partitioned section (where I didn't install OSX at all...I didn't think it was necessary at the time) I got a message telling me that I wasn't allowed to install OS9 on the small partition. I installed it on the main partition and figured I could then install OS 8.6 on the small partition (before I couldn't run the 8.6 installer because I didn' have OS9) but now the computer is telling me it can't run the 8.6 application.
So, I need to know if it's possible to install 8.6 on a 10GB partition, if so, what do I need to do and/or what am I doing wrong?
If it's not possible, and I'm just stuck with OS9, will I even be able to use my old 7.5.3-8.6 applications on it? I'm sure things like Adobe Pagemill, MS Office, Corel Wordperfect, etc will work fine, but I have a lot of third-party applications and games I enjoy playing (hey, I still use my NES!) and I'd hate to lose those. Plus, the whole point of the laptop was to condense the space taken up on my desk for a desktop Mac and PC, so if I still have to use the desktop Mac, it kind of defeats itself.
Also, I hate IE, but it has a badly-needed function that Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc don't. Anyone know where I can find the last-known release of it, now that Microsoft stopped its support?
Thank you for any help you can give me. I already feel lost in this "new" OSX world. I'm sure there's tricks to navigating the system, but I feel almost like when I was using XP for the first time and was trying to dive deep into the system. I'm so used to doing it on 8.6 that I feel lost on OSX.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can't install 9.2.1 or earlier on any Mac that is only Mac OS X bootable. In fact you need to use the restore disks which came with those Macs to install 9.2.2 on those Macs. 8.6 is only possible to install on Macs which came with 8.6 or earlier. The 9.1 disk may be useful for your 1999 PowerMac G4, but won't be of any use for a 2006 Powerbook G4.
Adobe Pagemill does not follow w3.org web publishing standards. If you want a webpage editor, get http://www.barebones.com/ BBEdit
MS Office, there is a free Mac OS X alternative in http://www.neooffice.org/
Or you can upgrade to the full Office 2004 for the Mac, or get http://www.thinkfree.com/ or Open OS X Office.
Wordperfect files can be converted to Word files with http://www.dataviz.com/ 's Maclinkplus.
Microsoft no longer has Internet Explorer for download (that quit being offered January 2006), though that is covered more in my FAQ:
http://www.macmaps.com/browser.html
As for other Mac OS X inquiries, I strongly recommend seeing my other FAQ:

which should answer most of your other questions. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask me.

You don't need a phone port on the iMac. The HP 7300 DeskJet Pro has an internal modem, you connect the printer's modem connection directly to your phone line. Please re-read the install directions that came with the printer.

you should still be able to get a copy of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which should run on your G5.

  • I have my iTunes Library on and external hard drive.  I have a new computer and want to use iTunes and KEEP my files on the external drive.

My iTunes library is on an external hard drive, and I was able to access / add to the library from my windows laptop.
I now have a new laptop, and want to be able to KEEP the library on the external drive while being able to use iTunes from the new laptop.
I have selected "choose library" in iTunes, and have chosen the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
My media populates in iTunes on the new laptop version of iTunes, but when I click on a song iTunes says that it cannot locate the song.
    Your help is kindly appreciated!

Thanks.  Were the settings shown in your last screenshot in force when you added the song that's shown on being on the C: drive?  It is also possible that at some point you ran iTunes with the external drive disconnected, in which case it will have defaulted to the library on the C: drive, or that you've run iTunes without explicitly selecting the library on the E: drive.  To make sure the latter is the case, hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes, then when you get this prompt:
click on Choose Library..., navigate to the location of your current iTunes Library.itl file, and click Open.
Part of your issue may that its not obvious where that current database file is located.  The folder layout on your E: drive isn't the one that's most easily managed - so its possible that the database file could be in:
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes 1
I suggest that a lot of your issues can be addressed by reshaping your library into the reliable "portable" layout as described in tt2's Make a split library portable user tip.  Comparing your screenshot with the equivalent on my system (where I have a "well-formed" library on an external drive):
    where:
there is just one iTunes folder with everything used by iTunes inside it
all media is held within subfolders of the iTunes Media folder
The way you have yours set up, where the iTunes Media Folder location is set to E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes rather than E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes Media is probably why some of your media is not being located correctly - the extent to which iTunes can correctly resolve locations is, to an extent, reliant on the folders for the different media kinds (Music, Audiobooks, etc.) being inside the iTunes Media media folder.  One common misunderstanding (not helped at all by Apple's documentation!) is that the iTunes Media Folder location setting in Edit > Preferences > Advanced does not tell iTunes where to find anything; rather it determines where iTunes will put new additions to your Library, in conjunction with the Copy files to iTunes Media folder ... flag:
I would definitely take the time to work through the steps to bring your library into the "portable" shape - there may be few remaining issues with broken links when that's complete but this will be much easier to fix if your library is in a more standard structure.

  • My one computer's gone for repairs, all my iTunes info is on an external drive. I just bought a new machine, I want to use iTunes on it with my original external drive. How can I do this?

Hi, I have an important question which I need to ask you folks.
For the past four years, I have been using iTunes on my laptop, the only computer I have had to use iTunes. All of my movies, songs, etc are saved to an external hard drive which connects through its USB port.
That laptop is not currently working, and for the past couple of months has been upstate at a friend's house, as he is attempting to fix it.
I just got a new portable tablet capable of running iTunes today. I have not set it up yet has I have been busy at work; but I want to have the tablet have iTunes on it as well under my existing iTunes account, but I am not sure exactly how to go about it. This will be my second computer machine that iTunes will be installed under, and I want to be able to plug into it the external hard drive, The exact same hard drive I have been using on my old computer with all my iTunes information on it.
    How do I do it?

If the iTunes database files are on that drive, launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, select Choose Library, and navigate to it. The computer may need to be authorized to play protected content, and if the library contains rented movies, those won't play.
If not, import the content to an iTunes library.

  • Getting a new mac and want to use both with iTunes

I looked around the forums and the main site a bit and didn't see anything specific on how to do this, but I am currently using iTunes with my macbook and I have all of my iTunes content on an external hard drive. When my new mac arrives I first want to be able to use it as the primary device for iTunes (still want to keep content on the external drive) and need help on how to set it up (preferably w/o losing any content especially my iPhone backup) and if possible I want to be able to stream iTunes content to the macbook with the same account.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not exactly sure if my library database documents are on the external or not. I do know that I just have my entire itunes library on the external. Any way I could check to be sure?
your entire iTunes folder, not just the iTunes music (or media) folder, should be on the external. the iTunes folder contains, among others, the *iTunes library file* - which will be the database both your Macs need to access. click here for information.
And if not, how do I go about moving the documents to the external
just drag & drop them over. next, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes with the option key pressed. you will see this window
click on +choose library+ and navigate to the +iTunes library file+ (which should be located on the external HD inside the iTunes folder).
As far as using the macbook with iTunes I guess I'm looking for a way to share the music with it after I have setup the new mac to be the main iTunes machine. I know there's the option of Home Sharing in iTunes so is that all I need to do?
home sharing should work okay. click here for information.
    for another option, click here.

  • I have a new iPod and want to use it with my iTunes Library

I have a 60 gb and it is full. I want to keep this iPod and use my new Classic iPod 5th for Audiobooks. How can I had do this and not loose my music, movies, and audiobooks?

You will not lose anything. The new iPod will be recognized as a separate device. It can be configured completely differently than your existing one.

  • Cheapest option for someone new to mac wanting to use xcode and try develop

    Hi
Apologies if this is in wrong location but couldnt find a general section
I havent used mac before, looking to find cheapest option to get in to the mac World and try my hand with xcode / develop the likes of an app for iphone for fun
Had found a imac5 1 but when I researched further it would appear that I might not be able to use this for latest version of xcode and therefore wouldnt suit my need. Shame as I think I could have got it for €300
Am I correct - in that its not suitable?
Any suggestions on what else would be suitable or where I could start?
I couldnt afford to spend €1,000 or more on a new mac whether it was desktop or laptop etc.
I want to get something thats useable (not from the dark ages) but realise that I may have to go back at least a few years thus the reason I was looking at the imac5,1
Thanks for your time. Any help advise etc would be appreciated.

The latest XCode requires OSX Lion. That requires:
Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later with the Mac App Store installed
At least 4GB of additional disk space to accommodate the download, but more is obviously recommended
Thus, assuming that whan you said imac5 you were referring to an iMac with an Power PC G5 processor you are right i that that is not compatible.
There are some Mac with an Intel Core sSolo and just Intel Core Duo processor that will not work with the latest XCode.
I would look for a Mac Mini 2007 or later since those meed the XCode requirements

  • I have just bought a new laptop and want to use this one for my i pod. When i tried to do this it say my i pod is already synced to another computer. How do i 'un-synch' the old one. It does offer to synch the i pod to the new laptop but only for purchas,

The i pod will synch purchased songs to the new library but that would mean losing most of my songs. I tried home share but that only showed the purchased songs too.
I would lie to un-synch the old laptop, de-authorise it and remove i tunes altogether as i want to give it away.
How do i un-synch a library to a particular pc and re synch it to the new one?

That's not how it works. Authorising is for music purchased from iTunes, not for music you've imported from CDsor elsewhere. Music purchased form other suppliers would also not be subject to this authorising procedure.
Do you still have the old computer? If so, you need to copy the iTunes Library from that to the new computer. For example, in Windows XP, I would copy the My Music folder (which contains the iTunes Library, my Amazon MP3 purchases and album artwork) and put that onto an external drive. Then move the drive to the new computer and copy the copied folder onto the new machine thereby replacing the new machine's My Music folder. Then tell iTunes to look at the imported Library.
Obviously, you need to take into account that you have Windows 7 (where I assume the folder names may be different), any other places on you old machine where songs are located and so on.

    Thanks

I want the mac to be the main machine for my iTunes account - it won't sync as it is not the main computer.

  • I have a new computer and want to use it for my IPhone - it wont just plug

I have upgraded to a newer PC What do I need to do to use my I phone with it. I thought I could just plug & play when I accessed my apple account on line!  Help

Perhaps you could explain what the issue is?
You sync it the same way you did with your old computer.
When you sync to a different computer, it will first erase the content from the iphone and replace with content from the new computer, so make sure to copy everything from the old computer or your backup copy of the old computer to the new one first.

  • Got new iphone 4 want to use 1st gen as Touch - sim card ?

I have just replaced my original 1st gen iPhone with the new i4. They activated it at the Apple store, and when I came home iTunes had me restore from a back up - so all my apps, etc transferred. My old phone now just works on wi-fi.
    Here's my question:
I would like to keep the original phone as an iTouch for my daughter. When I connect to iTunes it still says "my phone" - but so does my new one. How do I get iTunes to understand that they are two different pieces of hardware which I will want different apps on?
I've read several posts/support docs talking about SIM cards. Mine was not removed when I purchased the new phone. When I connect it it's not saying "connect to iTunes".
    Ideas?

Just rename your phones (probably not even necessary for iTunes but it will help you). Double-click on the phone in the iTunes source list just like you would rename a playlist.
I've got the same situation and iTunes knows they are different phones no problem.
With the original iPhone, you need to keep the original SIM in it for it to operate as a touch--Apple's instructions are here.
